    Now then.

You are (by popular choice) David Lister, ace Mobile Suit pilot of Mastodon Battalion who are currently attempting to blow up more of America than the Colony Drop.

At the rate were going, you might JUST reach that in the 9 months you have left in the war.
Seriously, it's been what? One mushroom cloud explosion a day for the past week now?

    You're squad consists of:

Your CO: Sergeant Major Wolfgang Strauss
One Week War and Battle of Loum veteran.
Pilots a MS-06S Zaku II (Command model)

Your wingmand, destroyer of the laws of physics and other things with his axes: ZOLOMON RINGO
    Pilots: MS-06F Zaku II

You currently pilot one MS-06J Zaku II (Ground type)

All of your kills combine into one outrageous number, and you TOTALLY should have died so many times by now.

When we last saw our intrepid heroes, ANOTHER nuclear accident had occurred. In this case the feddies just blew up Roswell by causing an underground Nuclear powerplant to go into meltdown.
Pretty much half the town and the entire Airforce Base crumbled into a large radioactive crater, any of the remaining Federation forces retreated or died at this.

After returning your battered machines to the Hanger Bay your forces take stock.
The battle was hard, but the Federation holdouts in the area have finally been broken. They are unlikely to trouble Zeonic forces again.

Unfortunately, losses in the battle were heavy (compared to usual, you guys kick ass.) six zaku's, a large amount of dodais, as well half of the Dopp sqaudron and Magella tanks were lost in the battle.
You're somewhat understrength, but the Battalion's still got plenty of punch.

In the debriefing room your praised for taking out the enemy facility and winning the first Zeon/Federation mobile suit duel in history. You're also praised for revealing the train, as this confirms what Zeon Intelligence has suspected, that there is a secret hidden base somewhere in Arizona.

Luckily that's not your problem, there sending in another elite team on the east coast to deal with them. Some group called MIDNIGHT FENRIR, apparently...

You omit to tell him about the papers you picked up, you weren't ordered to retrieve any information after all, don't want him thinking your overzealous.

You instead share the papers with the rest of your squad and Ookawara in engineering. This brightens his mood after you returned with a smashed up Mobile suit for him to repair ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE.

BENEFITS FROM READING THE ZANNY PLANS

Your team along with Okawara confirm that the Zanny is little more than a slightly redesigned Zaku.
Although it does reveal two interesting things...

A Zaku's limbs are moved by the Fluid Pulse System which used a pulse converter to turn the energy produced by the atomic reactor into pulses of pressure within a fluid. Thousands of fluid pipes, finer than human hairs, transmitted these pulses at supersonic speed to the rotary cylinders which drove the joints. This system yielded a higher operating speed than hydraulics, and lower weight and greater structural simplicity than electric motors.

The Zanny however, on certain joints had an entirely different system, the field motor was used to drive the mobile suits' joints. An application of Minovsky physics, this system used the interaction of I-fields and Minovsky particles to achieve far lighter weight and higher output than an electric motor.

Ookawara is of the opinion that neither method is really superior to the other, but it is weird how the Federation were able to device such a system with a high level of Minovsky Physics...

The other interesting thing is that there are apparently plans to insert power points directly into the hands of the Mobile suit to power weapons. What those weapons would be you have no idea.

Ookawara's impressed with the design though, he wonders if he could come up with something similar and submit it to R&D.

Reading the other papers are harder. They talk about a theoretical physics experiment a lot that makes no sense to anybody, but it also refers to Dr Flanagan's work on newtypes a lot as well.

    NEWTYPES IN ZEONQUEST: AN EXPLAINATION

Newtypes are humans who have evolved to the next stage. They are uniquely adapted to living in space and interacting with other people.

These adaptations manifest themselves combatwise in the following ways:

Heightened senses: All newtyps have increased extra sensory awareness. This translates into an increased spatial awareness in a combat situation, enabling them to dodge attacks easier.
Newtype Senses extend to three range bands
Melee: Can only sense incoming melee attacks
Combat: Can sense attacks within direct fire and melee range
Off-board: Can detect attacks from artillery, over the horizon etc.

Aside from range, each newtype has a level of sensitivity, which represents just how easy it is for the newtype to sense incoming attacks and how much time he has to prepare or dodge.

Then there's Newtype Pressure, a high newtype pressure will make you easier to spot and find by other newtypes, but if it's high enough then other newtypes may find themselves distracted and there own newtype abilities hampered by the force of your power.
Newtypes with high sensitivity can be more vulnerable to this.

Special Abilities: Some newtypes have special abilities unique to them.

Uh, because it's bigger, faster, heavier armed, better armour and can be converted into a space model relatively easily.

The Gouf IS still better in an urban fight than the Dom, but it get's blown out of the water by things like the Dom Tropen, Efreet, Kampfer and Zaku Kai.

Goufs are good early on, but later models soon leave them in the dust.

    >I'm wondering what Gouf Variants could've appeared if they'd been given a chance.

There are three things to come out of the Gouf custom design.

    Gouf Heavy Arms.
Increased calibre finger vulcans in both arms. Designed for AA work, but came in just as the GM was. Next to none were built as a result.

    Gouf Flight Type
A costly production cycle in both time, resources and lost test pilots ensured that this design was only finalised late in the war. Next to no close combat ability but the ability to fly.
It's flight time however was limited due to fuel constraints.

    Efreet
A precursor to the Kampfer, the Efreet is everything a Gouf is but better, mass production of the EXAM system would have turned the tide of the war... but at what cost to the pilots?

Maybe a combat training simulator aboard the roter mond?

Also, we could volunteer to help Ookawara out with non-technical grunt work, since he's such a bro.

Lastly, shouldn't we turn the papers in to high command? The information that we didn't understand about newtypes and such might be very valuable to Zeon if it gets to someone that can make sense of it.

Yes, actually, it was. Magnetic shockrod, low-caliber machinegun attached below shield, heatsaber and a gatling gun for closing support fire.

The thing is an urban combat machine, nothing more and nothing less. Unfortunately the Dom is just plain superior in the methods of warfare that mattered.
    >> Researcher Sam 11/20/09(Fri)15:29 No.6790840
Zeon Quest, excellent! Now that we've looked over the papers, should we give them to the COs?

Also, with all this talk about new or different zaku types, I have a question. Way back, in thread 1 or 2 or 3 or maybe 4, there was a picture of this thing. It had a mech torso and head, two arms each wielding what looked like a machine gun, and the body of what seemed to be a land battleship, with missile pods and cannon turrets in the front and rear. Sorry, I know that's not much to go by, but can someone give me the low down on it, and can we get one?

    >Failing that, see if we can't find out how the real invasion's going...

It is currently mid/late march in the One Year War, Zeon is currently kicking the Federations ass in the aftermath of dropping a colony on them, and with their advantages of advanced technology and combat systems optimised for Minovsky combat.

    >is there a way we can work on improving our newtype abilities?

Not currently. Firstly David hasn't concretely proven that he's a newtype yet. Furthermore the definition is still very much in the air, it's EXTREMELY early days for understanding newtypes. The best way currently to improve it is through live combat unfortunately.

    >Maybe a combat training simulator aboard the roter mond?

Some extra training and practice still wouldn't hurt, but you might be better served by studying something like MS programming.
Your training was VERY accelerated, they literally taught you how to move and shoot with your mobile suit.

    >Also, we could volunteer to help Ookawara out with non-technical grunt work, since he's such a bro.

There'd be plenty of work to do certainly.

    >Lastly, shouldn't we turn the papers in to high command? The information that we didn't understand about newtypes and such might be very valuable to Zeon if it gets to someone that can make sense of it.

Ookawara's already agreed to further the relevant data on himself.

Xamel was a dedicated artillery support suit built later in the war by Zeon. It was more of an actual suit then the Rhino was, which was halfway between a mobile armor and land battleship.

Anyway, the Xamel was still a monster of a suit, around twice as large as a Dom and packing the biggest damn cannon Zeon could fit on it for lobbing shells over the horizion. It would probably be a better choice for a small squad like ours. The Rhino seems more like a battalion support unit.

The Xamel is prototype artillery support platform that uses a hovercraft system similar to the Dom's. It's the Mobile suit behind the Gundam in the picture.

The Rhinosaurus deters close attackers with lots of close in weaponry, whilst the Xamel does it with high speed evasion and missile pods.

Also, the Xamel is a dedicated model, the Rhino is an evolved type of Zaku Tank.

Honestly, that's quite possible, considering the sheer amount of armaments and ammo given its size. It also tends to maneuver like a pig, which is usually a death sentence when fighting against mobile suits. The Xamel is quite speedy for its bulk, on the other hand.

I just don't think moving really fast and big artillery guns go well together. It'd be hard enough with modern targeting computers, and with Minofski Particles, you don't even have that.

And if the Rhino is sluggish, isn't that more reason to give it armor so that it can survive multiple hits? It even has side/rear cannons to dissuade flanking.

But I suppose everyone has their own preferences, right?

It's designed to function like modern self-propelled artillery units, moving position in between strikes. The gun is fully retractable, and it's not like it uses it on the move.

As for targeting, it's actually a two-seater. A properly trained gunner using dumb-fire weapons wouldn't be as hindered at lower Minovsky densities as someone using self-guided weapons.

But you're right. It just makes more sense to me personally to attach a Xamel to the squad, and leave the Rhino behind as a shepard for the Rotor Mond. It just seems too big for us at the moment. Maybe that'll change later on, who can say.

Well, you probably wouldn't fire it whilst on the move. At anyrate, the Xamel's maneouverability can't be doubted, the thing nearly took down South Burning in a GM Custom in close combat for gods sake.

    >And if the Rhino is sluggish, isn't that more reason to give it armor so that it can survive multiple hits? It even has side/rear cannons to dissuade flanking.

Well, like I said, the Rhino was very custom refit job, the Xamel was a dedicated design.

Nothing at this point. Beam weapons still only exist on paper right now. Later on we'll get to I-fields and anti-beam coating, but the former is waaaaay too big and power-intensive to put on a standard mobile suit, and the latter is much less effective, and won't be invented for at least 7-8 years. The best defense is still to just not get hit in the first place.

Hmmm, so you're saying that the only winning move is not to play?

Wargames reference aside, thanks for telling me. Though the Rhino seems to be much bigger than a standard MS. Perhaps, if we do get one for the battalion, and if there are evil frickin' enemies with frickin' lasers for their fricken' weapons, we could hope for an I Field generator for it? Flack and smoke work well against lasers too (Note that this is from the real world, I don't know if it holds up in Gundam), as the small particles diffuse the beam. Just having a lot of dry ice to create fog around you could be used to weaken the damage of enemy lasers.

    Namefaggan' fer better identification.

That would work...if these were lasers. Beam weapons in Gundam are another product of Minovsky physics, and behave closer to charged particle or plasma beams. Mounting an I-field generator on a Rhino is conceivable, since the thing could support a stolen Burstliner. Then again, the Big Zam had one, and it could only run for 20 minutes without overheating.

Either way, all this stuff is still either theoretical, or just doesn't exist yet. It'll be something to worry about when we do face off against our first GM squad, or god forbid, one of the RX series.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)17:25 No.6792090
    >>6792044

Big Zam was designed for space anti-capital operations. Heat dispersal is one of the biggest problems for any space-based weapon system.

The Rhino, on the other hand, was designed for land operations and would have a much easier time of radiating the I-field's heat buildup.

Closer to? They ARE plasma beams. Their tiny balls of plasma contained inside a minovsky field which are then extruded like a beam from a hand held rifle.
The battleship grade beam weapons create the plasma and form the minovsky fields themselves instead of merely storing the plasma in a magazine, which is why they're so bulky.
    >> Researcher Sam 11/20/09(Fri)17:32 No.6792172
    >>6792044
Ah, now plasma I can understand! It's just a simple matter of hyper cooling the air around us to cool the plasma until it's temperature can be handled by the armor. Unless I have horribly misunderstood the basic premise of what plasma is, which I am just now beginning to think I may have done.

If it's like charged particles, we can cross over with Zoids and ask for some of their anti-charged particle defenses. And by that I mean use what they used, but I forget what that was, I'll look it up later.

Anywho, you're right, this is all hypothetical/theoretical at this point. But it is certainly interesting to me!

    >And are Lieutenants usually in command of only a single squad, or does this function differently than RL?

I'm basically winging it here. An MS company is commanded by a Captain, but should anything happen to him the 1st Lieutenant takes command. Should anything happen to him, 2nd Lieutenant (that's you) takes it.

Strauss Made 1st Lieutenant that effectively makes him second in command of his company.

Most Squads are usually commanded by a Sergeant, which means that if needs be you can order other squads around.

    NEW PILOT: JOLYNE BRANDE

Whilst she seems generally apathetic to being transferred into a new squad, and pretty much everything, you get the feeling that she at least knows what she's doing.

    She's just pretty standoffish.

Also, as the only woman in the Squad, she get's her own room to herself, you still have to share with Zolomon. Not that there isn't a fair amount of spare buildings to occupy, it's just anti-zeonic sentiment is still pretty high in California, and it's probably not a good idea to relocate off of the base.

    NEW MS ADDED TO SQUAD
    MS-06K Zaku Cannon

An early test model, this Zaku modification is designed for two roles in mind, Long range fire support and to deal with enemy aircraft.

    Armaments for Jolyne's model are:

    180mm Cannon (fixed)
    Smoke Dispensor
120mm Zaku Rifle (2 Reloads stored on back plate)

    DOSSIER ON JOLYNE BRANDE

    Age: 19
    Rank: 1st Class Private

A long range support specialist, JOLYNE BRANDE has 14 kills to her name with long range weapons, primarily including use of the Magella Top Cannon. Also trained in Magella Tank use. Three minor counts of insuborniation.
Jolyne is a reliable team member, though antisocial, this can lead to false assumptions.
Black Belt in Maui Thai, taught at the Platinum Star Gym in Zum City.
Born in Side 3, mother now deceased, father unknown.
Currently part of 1st company (2nd Battalion)

Things get off to a good start when you introduce youself as Sir David Lister - Knight of Zeon, and then introduce your Zaku's kill count.

Jolyne seems more willing to engage in conversation this morning. She is less willing to believe that Zolomon did all that with an axe however. You back her up as you too are equally unwilling to believe half of the shit Zolomon pulls with those dual hawks, much to the amusement of everyone present.
Nevertheless, you have the combat footage to proove it.

They're interested in securing you to work for them as a test pilot, you wouldn't neccersarily be transferred out of your unit all they'd need would be your combat data at the end of every day (where possible.)

From the looks of it, all three accounts are from people in her previous unit macking on her, and her putting them into the infirmary when they REALLY wouldn't take the hint. Here previous captain's basically signed off saying that the other guys deserved everything they got, but the last one she punched for it was a Lieutenant and she broke his jaw in three places, so it was decided to move her out for morale.

Well, really its all situational. Beyond basic things we'd probably be better of knowing what each of us is likely to do, something that we'd need to get in combat to see and learn from the newbies.

That aside, simple maneuver. Jolyne in cover starts pounding a feddie target, preferably keeping their heads down. We take the opportunity (and any speed bonuses we can get, assuming we get a commander variant) to outflank them and open up with your own firepower. All this is meant to keep the feddies occupied while Zolomon closes, hopefully shopoting the whole way until he can get in optimal axe range.

Of course, this strategy depends on an enemy we can outmaneuver.

    FIRST OFFER

One team wishes for you to test out their new Desert Terrain package for the Zaku: The MS-06D Desert Zaku

The Desert Zaku has specialised air intakes to deal with heavy amounts of sand, and imporved traction on it's feet as well as extra thrusters and heat radiators for extra power and mobility.

The unit is armed with head vulcans (40mm) and it's 120mm Zaku Machine Gun is optimised for combat in dusty environements. The arm hardpoint (currently used by you for your Boxer Shield) comes with an optional 90mm twin barrelled machine gun. Whilst you could eschew this and keep the Boxer Shield, as it IS a prototype, it would be good if you could test it out a few times.

In all other respects, the unit is identical to your MS-06J, sans the leg launchers.

    Second offer

    YMS-07 Gouf Prototype

    No Zaku boy. No Zaku.

Though not by much, this early model lacks many of the distinctive elements of the Gouf series such as heat rods and finger vulcans.

The model uses the same equipment as your Zaku models.
The real benefits are in it's construction, a more efficient construction optimised towards non-nuclear ground warfare make it lighter, quicker, more maneouvable but due to it's improved construction with no loss of survivability.

Again, whilst you CAN keep the boxer shield, use the one they're thinking of using every so often okay?

The real benefit though, is that this will put you on the Gouf line nice and early.

    This.

    >Also: Why no leg RAWKETS?

Because Sand buggers them up, burying yourself into the sand to ambush passing convoys REALLY buggers them up.

In theory though it wouldn't be impossible to refit them on, the two models are quite similar.

Screw Machine Gun finger, this puts us on the path of the fucking Gouf Custom! If we're lucky we might even be able to pick up an Efreet and jump on the EXAM project train.

I wonder if we can somehow nick a Hyper Bazooka off the Gundam.

    Last Offer

This last offer is the most extreme. One faction of techies want to transfer your entire squad OUT of this Company and into the Marine Corps to test their new Marine MS series.
You'd be technically on loan during the period, but you would be leaving america.

Should you take this option, your Zaku's will either be refitted to marine Zaku's, or swapped for a Prototype Gogg (pic related)

    Your choice.

Talk amongst yourself and get a consensus so that you can make a decision.

    TOMMOROW.

    AT FIVE (HOPEFULLY)

Granted the desert type has a shitload of Dakka, Actual performance upgrades should help us pull off our characteristic basthit insane stunts.

Also getting into Zeonic Company's good graces early on will probably fast-track us onto the Gelgoog test run. Going by the history of the suits, the Desert Type seeems to be the Dom Route option.

    I vote Gouf Prototype.

Wow, I understood about 48% of that! So it seems that people were talking about the differences between the Gouf and one other type, can someone give me the low-down on them and what the differences are?

Anyway, I vote for the desert variant because it has the most guns. Even a gun on it's head!

Definitely a fatguy mobile suit. While working in the water might set us up to being RAPESAUCE in space combat, I'm still with the gouf.

The Gouf Custom was a High-Preformance upgrade of the Gouf rolled out in Late 0079. They got rid of the Machine Gun hand and added a normal manipulator, changed out the thick heat rod for a cable and magnetic grappler giving it a greater reach and flexibility. To replace the machine gun hand, there was three barrel 35mm Machine Gun that could be attached to the arm hardpoint, as well the shield came with a Gatling Gun attachment that could be ejected when needed.

Also, I vote for giving our old Zaku to an up and coming pilot, if we are going to be trading up.

You're a Spacenoid, that gives out a racial bonus to space combat anyway.
