You have set out for the silver vein your experts have told you about in the jungle. Would you like to proceed along pre cut paths in the dark continent no matter where they lead (and risk getting lost) or cut your own path with your workers?
    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)20:39 No.6794224
Reminder: you are heading north and the silver vein you are looking for is rumored to be near a lost city. Winston comments saying that "Cities and shite like that are for the army, lets just mine this bitch of a jungle and cut loose. I don't want to be here long."

godfried comments that there are advantaged to setting up a long term settlement.

    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)20:45 No.6794301
Sometimes I hate writing long posts then finding my questions answered. You start cutting your way north. The WW1 era trucks are having alot of problems, but the mechanics in your expert core are proving themselves by fixing them. The rifles are riding pompously in the trucks while the workers do all the machete grunt work. Do you want to cover your trail so others dont follow or create a dirt road as you go for more supplies? Do you want the rifles to do any labor or put it all on the workers?
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)20:46 No.6794321
Cut a path for what? SLASH AND BURN this jungle untill we have some proper ground to plant foodstuffs on in the future.

Let the foetid, wasteland jungle weep and shrink back from our bright burning torches of Christianity and Civilization!
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)20:48 No.6794352
Yes, have those guys sling their rifles across their back and get to work! They are vets and former soldiers, they know work that needs to be done when they see it.

Rotate the workers and rifles out so they can rest and keep and eye out for danger in the shade.
    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)20:49 No.6794359
To make the progress go faster, you have the rifles start burning through the jungle to make a path. Because of the humidity the fire doesnt spread and is a very useful tool. However, the fire creates a trail of evidence that is impossible to cover up, so it is recomended you build a dirt road. Orders for the workers? road or no road? do the rifles continue working?
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)20:49 No.6794362
Dirt road! And let the workes do it.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)20:51 No.6794388
dirt road, workers build it, leave behind 25 rifles to cover them
    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)20:52 No.6794393
The workers start making a road behind you as the rifles press forward with torches and machetes. The (unguarded) workers have started to complain of shadows in the brush.

Winston working with the rifles has uncovered a body of a native. He is ornemented with what the experts tell you are bone jewelry pieces of the tribe of the death serpent.

Winston asks you what we should do about the bloody natives.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)20:54 No.6794417

The 25 rifles you sent back have been laying about in the trucks and not doing much, and the workers have remained unguarded. Several have reported seeing large amounts of shadows and skull faces in the forest

Because if one is going into the jungle, then one's dashed well going to have gin to go with the quinnine, to resist malaria.

OP, you fail in your research.

    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)20:58 No.6794454
Lol, quinine and gin are in the extra supplies. Anyways, the soldiers reach a clearing. One side of the clearing is blocked off by vines that you cannot see past, and the other way is the way by which youve come. This clearing is full of stones and crudely chopped trees.

Winston says "If this isnt a bloody trap then I've never seen one".

Do you circle the trucks? do you burn the vines? do you reorganize the layout of your forces?
    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)21:00 No.6794466
Sorry, wasnt reading fast enough. You set up the gatlings to cover the W and E sides of the clearing, and gather the trucks in the center. You put 50 rifles in front and in back. The workers and experts are guarding the supplies in the center of this formation. What do you do about the vines?
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)21:00 No.6794469

    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)21:01 No.6794472

The natives charge your gatling and everyone is screaming as the jungle is lit up by hundreds of rifle and gatling shots. In the morning you find that in the confusion the natives javelined the wheels of the 2 lead trucks, and this will take a while to repair (1 day).

Also, what do we do with the stacks of native corpses. They stink.

    >> Victorian Journey Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)21:15 No.6794636
The experts go out well guarded and the natives only skirmish a few times due to the gatlings and the everburning ring of fire around the camp (not that actually destructive cause of the humidity). The experts determine that the silver vein is less than a day's journey away and that the city is probably a week away. Do you start settling in long term here or start the convoy moving again? >> Victorian Quest Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)21:30 No.6794804
The experts are snide in the fact that they get to ride, and the workers and rifles both know that the experts are way above their paygrade so they dont complain.

With only a couple death tribe sightings you get to where the experts have predicted a silver vein to be. There is a tiny rock outcropping and just a cursory glace reveals that it has tons of silver. However etched into the rock are death tribe sigils. In true british fashion, Winston breaks open the rock with a pickaxe. Godfried suggests you clear the area of trees and set up camp. Orders? remember give sepcific instructions to every block of 50.

The experts start drawing up plans for a mineshaft and testing the soil while not doing any physical labor. The workers and rifles clear the forest in shits, and now you have about 1/2 of an acre of open fertile ground. How do you set up? remember, you brought iron sheets and tons of wood and cloth and sandbags with you. Also, the jungle wood is subpar to the imported stuff u have with you, but it is in large supply when u want to use it. Now /tg/, build DAT COLONY

Winston and the rifles come back with something that looks like a 3 way cross btw a rabbit a turkey and a chicken. It is quite tasty through and about the size of an ostrich. They couldnt find good high ground, this area is pretty level, and when they got past a certain point there we signs of death tribes everywhere scratched into trees.

You have build a circular camp for now it is very small at 1/2 an acre but your men are working on clearing. barracks and Hq are made of sandbags reinforced with import wood and metal roofs covered in cloth. The trenches are lined with the jungle wood, and the trucks have been converted to strongpoints with the gatlings bolted down. Your men are currently clearing more land. The experts are lounging about, the rifles are guarding, and the workers are clearing. Orders?

Winston asks for permission to lead 30 rifles to scout the city boundries
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)21:54 No.6795077
The holes used to fill the sandbags should form a perimeter trench around the accesses of the mine.

No more of that avalanche-o-logs killing our boys. A good 3-foot trench around the campsite and reinforce it with native-logs stuck into the ground at an angle to catch anything the natives might want to roll into our trenches.

Save the nice wood for building solid barracks with a good messhall with the plan to start cooking up hot chow for the poor damn disgrunted workers.

    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)22:58 No.6795842
farms and sawmill, expand, wait for the next caravan with GUNS to push any deeper, use some of your gunpowder for farming, talk to your experts about any other veins/methods for mining the current mine
    >> Victorian CRISIS Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)22:58 No.6795846
You start building a sawmill with the jungle wood, but progress is slow. FIVE French balloons appeared in the skies today, what flag (s) do you run out, do you shoot at any of them. From Godfried's suggestion, you lock Winston indoors so he doesnt do something stupid

Don't shoot the balloons. Remain isolationist for now, don't signal the french; keep the men on the listen for explosions or mining activity to see if the French might have anything worth trading for. Otherwise it's not worth exposing ourselves this early.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:00 No.6795868
union jack AND company flag, play your horn loud, signal to them, hide your soldiers
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:01 No.6795874
5 of them? I raise the Union Jack and I have an arrow pointed towards their little section of Africa incase they are lost.
    >> Victorian Quest Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)23:01 No.6795879
Three of the balloons start drifting towards your location, one of them as if to land. What flags do you run out, do you shoot or greet?
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:02 No.6795886
dont shoot, whatever you do, dont shoot
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:03 No.6795892

Union Jack, company flag, greet them.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:03 No.6795894
greet if they question about shooting at thier man say you were shooting at natives try and orgnise trade
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:03 No.6795898
men to their posts, dont shoot unless the french appear overly suspicious, force the french to land jsut outside your camp
    >> Victorian CRISIS Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)23:04 No.6795906
One of the balloons, with the man who you shot at last night, is trying to land on your outskirts of your second ring. You run out the Union jack and the company flag. One of the frenchmen in the balloons overhead takes a potshot at the company flag but not at the union jack.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:04 No.6795912
keep an eye out for explosives from the sky, train your gats, but dont fire, greet them yourself, winston is still in time out
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:05 No.6795923

Respond with a warning shot. Make it clear we are interested in civil discourse but such tomfoolery in the bounds of our camp will not be tolerated.

the man who winston shot at steps out of his balloon and ties it down to a tent stake. He greets you in perfect american english and says how do you do partner. How do you respond?
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:06 No.6795933
wave wildly at them! and encourage the Frenchman to land!

If the Company Flag is the issue take it down temporarily and have my riflemen prepared to throw this pussy fucking frog into the mud and arrest his ass!

    But let him land!
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:06 No.6795935
    no escalation though
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:07 No.6795942

Ask if his camp has explosives. Say you have a small shipment of silver coming soon and you might be interested in trading for it. Don't let the french know you're sitting on a mine.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:07 No.6795944
greet him yourself, order your men to stand down, but remain at their posts, invite him into your HQ, he can bring a few men, but the majority must remain on the outer rings

    >> Victorian CRISIS Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)23:08 No.6795958
He laughs when he passes winston locked inside the barracks and greets you. He says that he is just a leader of a peaceful band of explorers heading towards the city. He says I want a 50 percent cut of your mine then starts walking back towards his balloon.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:09 No.6795965

Have the men take him hostage immediately. If he knows about the mine then something is up ,and there's no way the frogs are getting 50 percent of anything.

    >> Victorian CRISIS Some Steampunk Dude 11/20/09(Fri)23:13 No.6796010
You take him hostage, and the balloons in the air see that he has not returned. One of them pulls a flare gun and fires it straight into the sky above your camp. the balloons start pulling away. One of them fires at and makes explode the landed balloon. You just lost the start of your sawmill from fire. Crisis over. What do you want to do with the American?

Interrogate him. Torture him if necessary. Afterwards, cripple him so he can't cause trouble but keep him around. You never know when you might need to negotiate with his buddies, or offer the natives collateral.

You interrogate him and torture him. He is the representative from a French Gold/gem mining company. He wont tell you anything else, so winston beats him until he is almost dead. Next shipment in 3 days.
