    ---

Moonlight swaths in through cloudy skies above, through the stone illuminating the scattered shingles and pieces of stone scattered across the door. It continues till it reaches a shadow. The shadow looms over the broken stone ground impenetrable even by the skies above. The building had once been a church, but reckless cannon fire from the eastern invaders has rendered it uninhabited, unsafe, it could collapse at any moment. But you could swear even stone could know fear since it does not in your presence.

The previous days had been spent underground, but your refuge had been discovered. A band of would be heroes had mustered to oppose your designs, but they were quickly dispatched despite. Your fist is clenched on the iron bar railings of a balcony, once used for the head priest to give his sermons to the empty wooden bleachers below. Collected there now are you minions, the expendable, those that remain. They were an experiment in manifesting your strength through force of arms in numbers. Less then half of them remain now.

A day has passed since your Pyrrhic victory, there had been no where else to run other then right under the nose of those that pursue you. With no word from their heroes, the enemy has not made a move. Now you can wait and plot how best to strike. One does not fuck with evil and get away with it.

Can we check on the Elf and paladin we left trapped? I think just leaving them as loose ends would kick us in the ass in the cliche' bad guy way.

Also shitty drawing is because you said you needed more art to sedate your ego and I was bored.

TLDR version: A clever scheme is needed to kill or ruin the lives for tens of thousands. You have your recourses to build your strength, gather information, or strike.

    WHY
i ask why have we not mobilized to take a gate house

all we would have to do is open that one little gate and we would get to see this whole loosly tied shitbomb come undone as those helpless nobles watch the savages pour into the city almost unnoppsed
lets get this shit done /tg/

    Consider it satiated First.

Leaving the church behind you venture down back to the remains of the last battle ground. The bodies left behind have already begun to rot and fill the air with the stench of the dead.

There on the ground lies under the stone the elf, dead, the internal bleeding from the untreated wounds to her back and vital organs had done her in. With body sprawled over the rock is the paladin. A trail dried blood leads to his original crater you created whilst crushing his torso. It seems he spent the last of his strength feebly trying to remove the stone.

Its almost touching. Instead a sinister smile forms on your face. So bittersweet. The best of all sweets.

Sure, Let's send some men out to take one of the gates. Let in the attackers and see what happens. While we are plenty far out of the fight and nice and safe of course

Have we attempted to use our powers to raise undead yet? There was a lot of emotion, hate among them in those too jealousy and lust. I don't know maybe we can experiment to bring them back to life just like we did to turn one mage into a puppet.

The dilemma is that the gatehouses are all heavily guarded by professional soldiers. While sending your minions on suicidal missions is a staple, that doesn't change the fact that it probably wont work. Unless you come up with a clever scheme the gates will remain closed. I will not say no if you truly wish to go for it anyways. Luck will have to be with you.

You have not experimented in necromancy.

Your forays into the records scattered in the catacombs and detached memories not of your own do give you hints though. Although your magic is dark and evil aligned in nature, it has nothing to do with the balance of light and death. You would have to discover a new way to animate the bodies. The puppet mage is a start, but it is not possible to predict how successful or not it will be on bodies that have already lost function. Spending time on research to accomplish this would be a task in itself though. If you could procure more texts to study it would be greatly speed up though.

I suggest we put the parties clothing on some of our men. Since I doubt we can animate dead. We then walk outside, nearest to one of the gates. Carrying us on something as if we are dead, or they have captured us.

Walk up into the middle of them in the middle of the cheering and "they got the assassin who killed the king!" we start tearing them apart.

Or we attack one of the food stocks. Or send the mage out to spy or something.

I think we have a new task before us: Seize the libraries of the mage academy.

What do we know about it? How many mages are there, what defenses do they have, how easy would it be for some of our men to get onto the grounds and start killing...?

I can't remember how our puppet works exactly, but I'd suggest we send her to spy, or bring us back some texts that might help us.

Also if I remember right, I might have to browse through the old quest threads, but I thought we found a way to get in and out of the city through the old catacombs. Couldn't we send a runner out to the attacking army, or go ourselves, and for a price lead them into the city without a fight?

We control her body, but not her mind or soul. She's not going to be of much if any use as an autonomous agent without her mind on our side.

    >Couldn't we send a runner out to the attacking army, or go ourselves, and for a price lead them into the city without a fight?
We could, yes. The thing is, would that actually result in more evil being done? The attacking army appears to have relatively advanced weaponry and hasn't been committing atrocities or anything thus far. If the siege ends, for all we know they'll institute a fair or peaceful occupation and lessen the amount of suffering within the city.

You return to the church and come upon the cellar, doors creaking in a gentle breeze. You need no torch to light your way and you walk down into the dusty abyss. Slung up against the wall like an abandoned doll is the mage, she is motionless and the only sign of life is the tears in her eyes. Her clothes appear ripped and there is a pungent smell in the air aside from the dust. Seems some of the cultists were in here earlier.

With a wave of your hand the limbs comes to life and the body lifts to its feet and walks toward you.

"Now then, I shall let this first example show what happens to those that wont obey willingly. You will go to the mage academy and you will tell them what they want to hear. And then I will know everything I wish to know."

Her eyes are alive with a mixture of sorrow and hatred. Good, it should be any other way.

You have some of the cultists clean her up and make her presentable for the next mission. You can channel your own mind some distance away to control her actions and speak with her voice. Now it is time to begin the masquerade. Her movements are awkward despite your best efforts, she must be trying to resist, but you disguise it as an injury. Other mages, comrades of hers rush to her.

An older gentle leaning on a staff hobbles up after two youths support her weight on their shoulders, "By Valtir! What happened?"

We might wish to have her claim that at least some of the others are alive and captured, rather than all having been killed out of hand. If the mages send a rescue party, we'll be able to have a few cultists observe it and learn of their strength.

Meanwhile, we and some rogues move into position so that this evening we can launch a string of assassinations against the mages. Or possibly capture/intimidate a few of the lesser types into working for us; we could really use some magic users on our side, and I doubt they're all as dedicated as our puppet was.

To make it particularity convincing you cut the imaginary strings to her legs and the sudden shift in wight causes her to crash knees first onto the cobblestone. You think you can almost distinctly hear the crunching of bones. You however do not feel pain in the slightest. An interesting observation, her body is more likely to wear out and die sooner then later. You will not know if you pushing the body beyond its limits or not.

You bluff the pain as best as you are able and a soft and pathetic feminine voice comes from out of her lips, "Can't speak... it... hurts... so...much. It hurts..."

"Watch how you hold her you imbeciles! Can't you see how hurt she is already? It's alright miss, we'll get you to a sick bed right away. I'll get the reagents for the mending spells immediately!"

Her body is thus carried swiftly inside the mage academy. Once more the cavernous and towering ceiling of the interior is sprawling out in all directions, mocking geometry and physics. Climbing the hovering stone steps, moving floors and hallways, and across vast expanses of land that stretch further then the city itself you are eventually brought to an empty infirmary and the two young apprentices lay her down on a bed.

One of them turns to the other, "Should we go help the master now? Or wait here?"

"You wait here, I'll go help him. Those injuries look serious, we wouldn't want to waste anytime." With vigour the one young man sprints out of the room. The other watches her body heave in pain involuntarily.

You can have your minions scour the city ganging up on mages. It will drastically reduce the time frame you have until you are discovered to still be actice.

Getting them inside the Mage academy is no easy task though. The place has many protections against entry. If you don't need your puppet anymore there is a way you could get yourself inside instead.

Or you can wait and play it out as is.

As long as her mental fortitude does not over power the intensity of the grip you have on her and she doesn't get any help there should be no need for concern. And the dorms would not be empty for sure. The younger students would be put there and under curfew for their own safety. Otherwise business is as usual for the academy. The application of creativity and the looming threat of death should be able to make them come up with something useful, harmful or otherwise.

Have our rogues begin splicing together a plan for the mass murder and abduction of as great a portion of the dorm-dwellers as possible, drawing upon our available assets. Bring us at least two plans of attack for review.

If one of our aims is to distract the mages and bureaucracy of the city, thereby delaying their discovery of us, we could create small scale mayhem within the city proper.

We could send out a cultist or two at a time into the city, and have them begin serial killing sprees, targeting the more wealthy and elite that are still kicking it outside of the fortress. Admittedly, these wouldn't be nobles, and there is a siege going on, but if wealthy merchants began to turn up murdered in horrific fashion, it would get the attention of the higher ups.

A handful could go through on a kamikaze mission to kill/maim as many as possible, acting as a distraction while some operatives get into the library and gather as many scrolls as they can to shadow back to us.

    >>6885975
Random murder is fun. Don't know about delaying discovery; it's been made clear at this point, I think, that they're aware of us and will be ramping up their response until we fall. Thus, my logic of taking us on the offensive against one of the major groups which might act against us; with the mages gone we'll be able to use high-level evil powers more freely.

You whisper to her subdued self, chained to her subconscious, "If you would only cooperate you wouldn't need to feel so much pain." Nothing in response, "Maybe you'll respond better in kind from example. Just you watch."

After the application a presence looms at the door to the infirmary, a man in an orange rob carrying a metal staff. "Zebidor, is she the one?"

The old man Zebidor turns around and forgoes the pleasantries, "Yes yes, this is her. In bad shape too, maybe in shock too. Injured really bad by the looks of it."

    "Can she speak?"

"I'd say yes, but it won't help her recovery."

"I'm afraid her recovery will have to come second to lives." The man enters the room and looms over the bedside. "Ferrona was it? What did you find down there? I need to know. Now." His voice is none for pleasantries either. And not in the kindly old man way either.

Recall that we originally caught her because she was poking around asking questions we didn't like, so we had our people follow her group back to their homes and abduct them in the middle of the night. She doesn't necessarily even have to know that the others were caught as well, let alone much of anything about her captors.

Our best bet is to talk a little, drop a bit of information but overall give the impression that she doesn't know much, then feign enough weakness that he leaves without pressing her for too much information.

Blame it on the invaders. Say they have got agents in the city who know ways in and out of it. They have captured a few mages, and you were the only one who managed to escape as the others gave their lives to protect you.

You did however over hear that they are going to attack a certain gate from the inside and outside at the same time.

This way they will GTFO in a hurry. And they will divert more forces to one gate hopefully, making it easier for our men to move on the streets. Etc.

I agree with pinning the invaders as the ones running the group of rogues in the catacombs, but I don't know that revealing the death of the other mages is a good idea. There's no benefit to us in letting the mages know that the bulk of their number which we captured are dead.

Nor do I agree with the gate plan- it's very immediate. I'm inclined to think that we shouldn't set ourselves up in a situation where we have only a very narrow window of opportunity to exploit and we're depending upon our opponents to act predictably in our favor, and that qualifies.

Further, her injuries might be obvious and tip others off that she's not normal.

Mos in Ventus: The book details the philosophical life work of an esteemed mage from 500 years ago. Detailing magic as a force existing in parallel to the material world. Those attuned to these winds find the ability to take these winds to make changes in real space. They manifest mostly as elemental changes; fire, earth, water and air. They are not created out of nothing but are rather taken from other courses combining together for various effects that can be performed through memorized incantations. The incantations hold no power, but rather focus the mind to a predetermined result.

Anyone can be trained to see the winds of magic, but only a few can actually manifest control over them. It is not impossible for someone to use a magic item to act as a medium however. Without the medium, no magic though.

Necromancy is related into two branches of thought. Black and White. White necromancy enforces life and sustains it while black rebukes and ends it. White necromancy is otherwise used for healing and necromancy for harming. Since black is only used to harm, it is a banned subject in most academies. Most records are sealed away or lost since the last great war.

Sounds like a nice place to hang out one day. If we can manage to get a book on mythical creatures that either once existed, or still exist however rare.( Since it has been stated people are paranoid of the north, but havn't seen any monsters there.) Then let's either explore the rest of this place, teleport in, or try to get our puppet out of there.

We could demand to see someone important. And have her kill them, or shadow step in and tear them apart.

Is there anything from which we might draw practical information on how to get someone from being a mundane to being a mage? We need something applicable in order to start making use of what we learn.

Also, I'm interested in this "use a magic item to act as a medium" bit. If we can get more on the theory of those, with an eye towards creating them for our minions, that would be excellent.

"Have you had quite enough woman? I'm sure my weight is far too much for your frame to hold. You might even burst at the seams soon enough. If you serve me, I'll make that pain go away."

A small girl is kneeling next to her waving her hands around excitingly as she speaks. She calls the woman Miss Thornson endearingly. They look happy. Your vision returns to normal as though nothing had happened. I guess that answers that, so stubborn vengeance is. So pathetic too.

Abusing the nativity of the two apprentices once again you convince them to take you with great haste to the elders at once, that you have solved the mystery you were trying to solve. They take the chair up seemingly endless stairs in only a mater of minutes to a pair of great oaken doors. It is not near the previous headmasters quarters. Having made their pleas they wheel you in to a room surrounded by twelve tall stone back thrones. There are five men seated at each chair at this time each wearing a red robe.

"I suppose this is the girl then? Has she remembered anything else of importance?"

"Things are moving much too fast, we need all we can learn and soon."

"We can't get much information from the Crown, so we must make do with what we get elsewhere."

"So Please Miss Ferrona, if you will?"

"What is this discovery you have made?"

The Great Oaken doors close behind you in the distance. The two apprentices are beside you, the red robes surrounding you and a pair of what appears guards on the same side of the door.

She's useful as a pair of eyes, as a threat to show them how powerful we are, or as an unexpected stab in the back. She needs to be one of those then get tossed away, or brought back to our home.

I vote we try to use her to get as much info as possible then scare the hell out of them by killing someone, anyone, and then telling them just who is controlling her body.

So she's given us the name of something they are protecting, a distraction, lead some enemies into a trap, shown us their leader's faces, and given us info.

You try to move the strings, but no life comes from them. Once more you find your vision upon a different place. A large stone room in the shape of a cube. The roof and walls are at least twenty feet away each. There are no windows but there is a glowing bright light. Shining before you a glowing radiance of a naked female form. It screams and hollers in pain, screaming to be killed, to kill her now before it is to late, then run, run far away. You approach the suspended glowing radiance. White hot flames flicker and lick the stone around you. The heat from her very soul burning away. Impressive, everything this woman has left, she is giving it up just to stop you even if only for a moment, defiant to the last.

With hand outstretched you reach for the form. The flames dance across your skin, cloths and armour but they do not burn even though the very air around is hot like a sun. With a thrust you pierce your four fingers vertically through her abdomen. It feels cooler on the other side. The stone walls begin to crumble and buckle. The semblance of reality the place held swaying too and fro. With the other hand you stick it through the gap and reverse your palms facing outwards. With all your strength you see the door now, and pull it apart.

The blinding light gone now, the same room stands before you. But your clothes are damp and heavy. To each side one half a person split in two and contents dumped onto the cold stone floor.

A wicked grin grows across your face, "Good evening gentlemen."

The mage elders on the council seats are little too shaken to take any action or even speak after seeing someone ripped in two and a fully armed man walk out through a portal created between the tearing flesh. One of them does manage to cry out for the guards. That is enough to get the two guards inside the room to snap to attention. Behind you the two robed figures charge you with staffs held low each glowing a pulsing blue, bolstering their courage with a fierce battle cry.

Shadow step behind them and cut them down. Or just attempt to cut their weapons in half and THEN cut them in half, dispatch them as soon as possible however, I highly doubt these elders are just useless old people.

If they give us too much trouble shadow step behind an elder and threaten their life to hold them off.

You remain motionless as you wait for them to approach you at the last second and draw Kingslayer with one fluid motion at their waists. Kingslayer is repelled by some force field that materializes as a translucent blue wall, but the soul flame of the sword continues slashing in the original direction. The mass of screaming ethereal skulls freeze their waists solid as they pass though and freeze them both in mid stride looking their still unfrozen legs in perfect balance. With a flutter of your cloak you raise your right foot and kick the frozen waist of the right guard. His torso falls over backwards while his legs split in each direction. The man on the left you simply push with your left arm and he crashes onto the floor cracking and nearly shattering his hips. Both men flail and scream in prolonged death throws on the ground as the ice begins to melt ans they begin to bleed out.

Just as suddenly the elders loose sight of you as you sit one leg crossed over the other hands joined and pent. "Now then, shall we talk for real this time?"

    ---

Sitting in order, yourself at the far right the voices sound off one by one.

    "Monster!"

    "Its him!"

"Oh Valtir! What do we do!"

    "We're the elite here!"

    "We'll just-"

Before the final one can speak his head rolls off his shoulders Kingslayer in your hand.

"I've just about enough of you talking like that all the time." Getting up from your seat you walk over to the next red robed mage. The collar what is it?"

The are shaking in fear now, these old men have never seen a fight before, they are scholars not warriors. "Magic item, been keeping it for centuries."

    "And"

"I'll never-" The elder's head is cut off.

You walk to the next elder, "Magic item AND?"

"Not quite magic really, well it is magic, but it also isn't."

    "Why is that?"

"I'll never-" The other man's head comes off with one clean blow.

    "Magic but not magic?"

"Magic Dampening device! Creates an anti-magic field around the wielder! Please don't kill me!" Too late you were already in mid swing.

"Hah, joke is on you monster! The Vault was here all along!" He points to the unoccupied headmaster's throne. "Each one of us here is the key! Then you just killed us! We die so do the keys!"

You look down at Kingslayer, fresh souls are dancing on the ethereal fire. And look back at the elder none to amused.

    "Oh"

You plunge kingslayer into the man's chest and leave it there long enough for his entire body to freeze over. Upon pulling the sword from the block of ice, the statue shatters into countless pieces immediately.

Taking Kingslayer toward the unoccupied throne you give it a wave over the stonework and a secret department reveals itself under the seat. A small and simple leather choker with a sapphire embedded in the belt buckle.

Take it, if we can. see if our magic still works around if. If not we'll have to figure something out. This could be a decent gift for Cath or ourselves if it does not null our own spells.

Let's check their bodies for any magic items they might of had, then I agree with making our way back to the library double time, stealing plenty of shit, and shadowstepping back home to deal with the foes in the sewer. The academy -might- serve as a decent base for now. If the crown has not contacted them in some time. It could be that they stay the hell out of it.

Other then pocket change and ceremonial decorations there is nothing worth while on the corpses strewn across the room.

Shandrai's Collar should only nullify magic when it is actually worn. So you're free to escape. That will be it for you for awhile though. It should take quite a bit of energy to out right escape at this point.

This will be delicious when the mages in the sewers...wahts left of them... come back. Proceed to kill any resistance or dominate any who submit.

If we can speak to cath through our minds or through the charm we gave her or magic or anything, we should tell her to send everyone at the mage temple now. Open the front gates. You start slaughtering from the inside and they start slaughtering from the outside.

Have the cultists screaming that it is time for the people to rise up that food, protection, and power can be offered at the mage acadamey if they help seige it

The twisting and ever changing hallways of the academy disorientate you at every turn, but with stalwart resolution you press onward. You come into the main atrium leading to the exit through the solitary doors. Students, mages, young and old catch a glimpse of your radience and attempt to flee. They clammer to reach the door, but as they swing open an opposing torrent of bodies enter the academy.

"Kill them all! Kill the abominations!"

"Look down on us now will you! You freaks!"

The cultists pour into the academy and begin running down and killing the mages as they scatter everywhere way not knowing where to run. The entirety of the academy will soon be under your direct refutable control.

A shame no of its inhabitants will likely not see that come to pass. The cultists seem to be working out some repressed anger issues with its inhabitants.

Arwenken Mage Academy? Problem Solved. Now for the rest of the city...
