Elegan/tg/entlemen, why don't we throw around some ideas for different portrayals/spins of classic fantasy races? I'll start by posting an idea I had for /tg/'s patron race: Dorfs.

Thought to be humans that dug beneath the surface in search of underground leylines, places where the magical realm bleeds into our own, the Dwarves have become one with their environment. Their biology has been changed over time to require little food, and their bodies are stocky and short to retain body heat in the chill caverns that they dwell in. They possess the ability to shape stone with their bare hands as if it were clay and they carve their immense underground cities in darkness, for they can feel every fold and stone within the earth around them. They are wary of other races and they rarely venture above ground, for the sun drastically increases their aging.

As a dwarf ages they become more like the stone. They show little signs of aging beyond their skin becoming like pewter and their hair becoming a fine metal. When one is near death, he makes his final march to the Hall of Ancestors, where he sits upon the throne carved for him by his house and, in his final days, becomes stone itself. Their stone corpses retain their spirits for centuries which allows their descendants to ask them for guidance. If a dwarf dies before his time, his body will fall to pieces of a soft, earthen material.

Their society is very rigid and requires all Dwarven folk to practice the arts of war and craftsmanship. A dwarf must make his own round shield and short axe for use in fighting the subterranean horrors beneath the dwarven holds. Some of the more warlike groups of dwarves create magnificent metal ships and sail from the underground lakes along the channels they carved to the ocean to raid and pillage the lesser races (which is all of them).

Every now and again, humans are born who feel no real affinity for other humans. They tend to avoid other children, and play by themselves, often making nonsensical seeming games that seem childish and amusing to adults and bring ridicule from other children. As they grow, they seem to take no interest in learning, or in the trades their families and fellow children take up. They stare at the sky, or wander far even in cities where the danger is great, or stare at the lakes or oceans or rivers if there are any nearby. Eventually, these children simply...wander away, and never return, leaving their homes and villages and cities for the wilds.

Sometimes an adventuring party will come across one of the lone elves, woodwise, clever, dangerous. they often possess powers of observation and senses that seem magical to others. Perhaps no one would ever have known what became of those children who wandered off until a sister of one of the lost children spoke her brothers name, and was started to hear the elf that had taken up with them answer her.

He had changed in appearance, now lithe, long limbed and his eyes grown deep and dark, and while she was nearly in her 50th summer, he had barely aged.

In the ancient days at the birth of the world, the seas were filled with dark terrors. Monsters, serpents, elementals, and fouler things twisted the oceans for their own dark purposes.

Among the people of the surface world there lived a long-forgotten race on an small island archipelago. This race was pious and just, honest folk who took only what bounty the sea saw fit to give them and gave back loving worship and care. Their love and worship gave the power of the seas form as a mighty goddess, who gave them in return dominion over the seas. Their islands sank, their flesh changed, and the Naga were born.

Naga society has changed little since that time. Their islands came to rest on the sea floor amidst kelp forests and coral reefs, and among this paradise they build a single great fortress city from which they have held back all the dark forces of the deep and launched mighty expeditions to cleanse their domain of the darkest evils. By their strength and will are the seas kept safe. Many young Naga train and adventure in the hope of one day joining one of the great crusades and patrolling the farthest reaches of the seas, ensuring the realm will forever remain one of peace.

    >paragraph about dwarfen death.
I have had that exact same idea in my mind for too long. Elfs were similar, they also used to be humans and aged to where their skin would become like bark, eventually coming to rest and becoming a short branch-less tree. They'd become hosts for other plant life and forest creatures amongst whom they lived their whole lives.

Here is another stab at dwarfs currently on /tg/ >>6889256

The stone bit reminds of of Chaos Dwarfs, the stone bit at least.

If memory serves, their magic users slowly turned to stone as they used more magic. When they were completely turned into a statue they were placed among other magic statues.

Having been since time primordial a race of the mountains, it was arguably inevitable that during the Great Thawing, the Dwarves took to the rivers now flowing down the sides of their once-frozen mountain domain.

Under the guiding hand of their 78th recorded King, Urekbar Of The Flint, the massive industrial might of their underground strongholds was turned towards fashioning ships totally unlike that previously known to the other mortal races of the world. As they took to those newly formed rivers, it was not on boats of wood and sailcloth, but great rune covered metal hulks belching smoke and flame.

No race has ever successfully captured these Runenskep (as they came to be known) successfully, so their exact workings remain a mystery. While the dwarves insist that they are purely a product of their talented smiths, rumours persist that the Great Thawing that had allowed the dwarves to leave their mountainholds had also awakened some long forgotten demon that shared with King Urekbar the diabolical sorcery that enabled the creation of their fearsome navy.

Proud warrior clan of humans that would place their children in suits of scale armor hoping their children would grow to be as strong as the dragons their armor mimiced?

Over time they learned to use magic for war (sorcerers are especially common amongst them) and after a few generations of experimenting their children are born in the scale armor and all are able to channel magic to some degree (IE firebreath)

Tiefling's were a tribe that worshiped peace and change but had the misfortune of living in a hostile wasteland. They knew not of evil or harming others, but were still competent in protecting themselves. They did everything they could to survive until a powerful demon found their tribe and made them a deal. By forfeiting the souls of everyone in the tribe they would be given the power they needed to defend themselves and survive the harsh trek to civilization. Knowing not of evil they blindly agreed.

When they actually got to civilization they were shunned by others, believing the Tieflings were demons themselves. As such most Tieflings became determined to clear their name, and most became scholars or artists.

    >Kobolds
I suggest we refluff them to be these ignorant little guys that are freaking adorable... oh wait.

That or play them the way they were meant to be, Dragonlings that are freaking geniuses when it comes to building traps.

    >Goblins
Decended from orcs they are just as visous but much less powerful. While orcs grew to use brute strength, the goblins grew using hit and run tactings, circling their prey and making a single attack before hiding and letting another goblin attack. This makes them difficult to hit and when you try to go after one you get attacked from all directions.

    >Changeling

Still don't have anything on changelings, but i was thinking warforged could be Artificers that admired constructs ability to survive in any terrain, and their lack of a need of sleeping, eating, and breathing, so much that they slowly replaced their body with mechanical and alchemical parts. This would help explain the HUGE problem of how there are reavent or vampire warforged in 4e.

Once in a blue moon a child is born so deformed that it can barely survive (outside the womb) for but no for very long. Mothers place their children in the woods, covered in a death shroud (a white handkerchief). However those who survive into the night are transformed, they lose all coloring of the skin, eyes, and hair as they turn stark white. Their faces look undeveloped as what marks us as an individual would seem to be erased.

To survive they must change, so they do. While they remain the same physically, everyone and anything views a changeling as one their own. If a slightly off centered and showing only the brief hints of what they truly are, if you catch one in the corner of your eye.

As they age, they cease to exist slowly but surely in till around 30 years where they are no more but a white handkerchief in the wind.

A few changes i would make.

They should still be able to have children that would also be changelings, they might have a very low survival rate though, and most of them born this way grow up thinking they are the race that raises them. This would help to explain how so many of them are around if they are only rarely "born"

Maybe take the changling idea and apply it to the dragonborn. A baby that is born without the ablity to channel magic, and with no scales, while still having draconic quality's. Since the dragonborn are PROUD WARRIOR GUYS they would see any child born this way as a misfit and abandon them. Those children would stick together to survive and would build shacks for homes and live together, but would still be children and die off sooner or latter without anyone to watch over them.

Since in 4e fluff few dragonborn ever hatch, we could just say that they do but most of them are born as cutebolds and abandoned for not being strong enough.

Hmmm... I guess I need to pick a race noone has done yet...

Dragons? Seriously I would prefer to do something different but I can't think of any remaining generics rather than ludicrously obscure races. Here goes:

When the creators of this land roamed, they were capable of amazing feats. The mountains would dance to their songs, the trees would uproot themselves and march at the flick of a wrist. What they used to do this could hardly be called magic, powerful beyond imagining as it was, and indeed magic itself may be some minor trifle of theirs they left behind when they departed our lands. But they were few, and this world was so big that to shape it down to the last of its details was too great a task even for them, or so the stories tell. Who knows, perhaps they had a deadline? To help them, they crafted the Dragons. Materially a dragon is to all intents and purposes glass, fools gold, rubite, rich veins of whatever bare rock its creator had at the time. There is no clue as to how they gain their functionality, Dragons of more valuable materials such as Emerald have been found to be flawless. But nonetheless, they move and breathe as if made of flesh. And they think too. Smarter than any mortal man, they were created as such and have only grown wiser with age, which for most of them is millenia.

    How about Dragon God Parents?

Parents could ask the blessing of a benevolent dragon upon their child, could be blood infusion or just a plain blessing, The more devilish ones can be invoked through pacts and blah, and blah.

See, there are dragons and there's no need for dragon sex!

They possess a fraction of their masters powers, which to us manifests as near full mastery of the magical arts. Sentience was necessary for their task, and they assisted this worlds creation. They know of most things in it, because they put them there. Eventually their masters departed to realms unknown, but they were left behind. The dragons will claim they were left to rule this Earth, to live their own lives, but they may still unknowingly still serve some ancient directive. They gather works of art, the crafts of man, dwarf, elf, and many others. Some say they do this in order to reap some abstract concept their masters created this world to seed for.

Thanks to the nature of their creation, the Dragons have been left well equipped to survive the ravages of time. There is nought on this Earth capable of dispatching one short of direct attack by another being, and even to this they prove near impossible to sunder, their immense size, tough flesh and skin, and complete lack of any internal organs that might serve as weakpoints making them nigh invulnerable. As well, their immense strength, magical skill, and devastating internal weapons employing some eternal power source of the creators makes them more than capable of destroying most threats before any damage is done. However, they inevitably fall, their numbers always in decline. It may take millenia but eventually a civilisation may turn, as some mood strikes them, upon a dragon. They can make more of themselves, but are ill inclined too, for the task is strenuous and holds none of the incentives it does to creatures of the flesh.

This will probably involve turning them into creatures that don't look like dragons, have dragonbreath abilities, or are referred to as "dragon-born."

I like the idea of a far-more-ancient-than-humans race of dinosaur-hominids; but then you basically just have lizardfolk.

    Oh, shit, here we go.

Saurids are an ancient race, having walked the earth for millennia before the advent of any other known race. Their oldest legends depict a world completely alien from the one we now know: a place of strange plants, hostile climate, and terrifying creatures which walked the world and struggled with one another. It is said they are older even than dragons, though dragons generally eat anyone who asks them this question.

The saurids live in tiny tribes, occupying eerie, impregnable fortresses, in the depths of the most inhospitable deserts, swamps, or mountains. Over the millennia they have perfected the arts of magic in ways no one else has accomplished; and they have achieved a level of enlightenment as a result of their knowledge. Very few even know of their existence.
    >> Anonymous 11/28/09(Sat)14:16 No.6908185
    >>6908176

The saurids are creatures of magic, infused from the egg with natural ties to the magical weave of the world around them. They are sages and mystics, able to manipulate magic the way other beings walk and breathe. Each saurid tribe is a single family, which inherits racial knowledge of their ancestors. Not memories themselves, but a sort of familiarity with all that their ancestors have seen and learned. Presented with a puzzle or a task, a saurid will often find he knows the answer, though he will probably know nothing of the ancestor who first mastered this fact.

The saurids are insular, keeping to their monastic fortress-homes. There is little in the world they have not already learned; the "great changes" of empires rising and falling, species growing to dominance and then receding, are nothing more than further iterations of patterns they've seen time and time again. If something should strike a saurid's fancy, he will usually consult magical scrying or divination, or even astral travel, rather than even conceive of physically leaving his home.
