THIS IS NO ZAKU GENTLEMEN NO ZAKU!

You are (as chosen by popular vote) Lieutenant JG David Lister, ace Mobile Suit pilot for the Principality of Zeon.
Currently you are the leader of 3rd squad of 321 Company, stationed in California.

    The story so far:

You were sent to Arizona to try and track down a missing supply train. What you found, was trouble.
After your squad carefully investigated the train tracks, you managed to find a hidden Federation MS Research facility as well as your missing train.
Then you found the missing five Mobile Suits... being piloted by the enemy. After you proved your ace status to them, you persued the last one through the grandcanyon and into a hall of mirrors fight (courtesy of the Colony Drop) with another two.
That was where your Mobile Suit lost it's arm.

You staggered back to the captured federation facility, to find the train had returned with orders to strip the place for intelligence.

Since it was 11 at night, you all decided to get some rest.

Unfortunately Ookawara didn't occompany you on your little jaunt.

We have good news, and bad news.

First off, the good news: Realising that you would probably be returning to the base, the train has brough back a large stock of the 128th Depot's 120mm rounds for your weapons. So you can fully reload your MGs.

Now the bad news, there are no spare parts for your gouf, and next to nothing to do a proper repair job on your armour. There are literally NO spare Zaku parts anywhere in the facility. They've patched up the holes with patchwork metal plates, but it needs to be properly looked at in an actual MS hangar somewhere.

It is currently 7:00am. The train has loaded the prototype onto one of the carriages. They plan to travel back to the 128th Depot immiediately.

    It is April 29th 0079.

Bleh, misread, thought we were at the depot already.

Well, if we have orders to look for intel, let's hand over those papers we found if we didn't already and do a more thorough search of the place. And send a message with the train requesting some materials to repair the armor damage. Scrap metal won't hold up to any decent resistance we may encounter.

There is spare ammo, but no actual guns, and only for the 120mm MGs. Zolomon would probably be okay with you using his if you want Y/N?

    >Did Zeon forces scour the battle sites?

The battles near the base yes, travelling up through the grand canyon is further than they really want to go though.

    >Well, if we have orders to look for intel, let's hand over those papers we found if we didn't already and do a more thorough search of the place.

You hand over the papers. They contain a tactical analysis on the capabilities of the prototype you took, and some details on Minovsky Particle manipulation.

Deciding that you can't stop here, this is Feddie country, you board the train and move out.
    It is 7:30am.

You travel down the tracks towards the 128th Depot, there hopefully they can repair your mobile suit, jury rig a new arm for you at the very least, and hopefully you can report in for a job well done.

About an hour into the journey, you notice smoke from up ahead. The train slows down as it approaches and then stops.
From the distance it appears to be a large amount of burning wreckage on the tracks.

High enough levels and you might not get situations like Dozle refusing reinforcements for shits and giggles.

It will also improve the odds of them sending you reinforcements when facing enemy MS, and how much forces they allocate when dealing with them. Basically, the higher it is, the less they'll underestimate the Feds.

It wont unlock non-canon suits. But it may result in thngs like the Pezun Project finishing sooner (though there are other qualifications needed for that) as well as MSV's that were never officially produced seeing a limited run perhaps.

Check for mines, booby traps, explosives rigged to the wreckage, anything.

Do we recognize these zakus? Are they identifiable at all? Unit numbers painted on? Unique markings? A pilot we might know?

Zolomon keeps a look out whilst you invesitgate closer. Eventually you are able to spot some identifying markings, identifying them as the squad that you met two days ago when you first started out along the tracks to look for the train.

They appear to have been destroyed by shelling, of what type is diffuclt to identify. It appears to been a close range ambush, possibly by Type-61 tanks. A quick scan of the area does show what looks to be a large amount of catapillar tracks.

If they managed to destroy 3 Zakus without losing any tanks in an ambush they got to have a lot of firepower.
10+ tanks or perhaps some Guntanks. Or a shitload of infantry with bazookas and mines.

Might be a good idea to mark down in what direction those tracks are going, if for nothing else but to alert Command once we get back.

Yeah. Let's strap his MG to our backs or wherever and keep watch while he moves the suits.

Now, they were destroyed by tanks we can assume. However, since the tracks don't appear to be damaged, that means that the wreckage was moved onto the tracks to delay us.

Make sure to keep our eyes open.

You swap positions with Zolomon and take his MG off him, not that it's much use with only one arm.

Zol uses his axes as shovels and begins to clear the burning wrecks off the tracks fairly quickly. He then inspects to the tracks for damage.

Unfortunately it appears the tracks will require some limited repair work by specialised engineers. The train has such personnel.

After you check the tracks for booby traps, you escort the train to the wrecks. The engineers, since they're close to the train and their gear to repair the damaged tracks quickly.

Whilst they're doing this, you scan the tracks trying to get an idea of where the enemy forces went. They lead you in a merry ring around the area, the forces must have started orbiting around the squad at high speed whilst attacking. Perhaps they also used smoke? Some of the tank squadrons in New Mexico had smoke launchers...
You get the feeling that they left in multiple directions, though the wind has blown some of the tracks away, implying that the attack wasn't all that recent.

Instead of using your Jump Jets, you cautiously mount the train's engine and use the extra elevation to get an idea of the area.

It's rocky and sandy, there are plenty of places a Type-61 Tank could hide out, but you don't see any distant dust tracks either left or right.
From the front however, you see that now that the wrecks have been moved away and put out (Zol poured sand on them until they went out.) that they weren't the only source of smoke.
In the distance, lying roughly in the direction of the Depot, is a long large plume of smoke.

    That can't be good.

Zolomon is on point, because as stated already, he's got the camo zaku. We'll stay back with Jol and the train, moving at a steady pace, but ready to stop and reverse if needed. If worse comes to worse, we can always hit the tracks going back the way we came, possibly going back to the Fed base, or maybe that tin mine, or just following the other track wherever it leads.

You quickly hop back into the train and zoom off towards the depot.
As you get closer you can confirm that unfortunately the entire Depot has been destroyed and burning. From the looks of it, large amount of the depot has been looted, and then set on fire.

You scan the area for enemies. The train meanwhile stops at the depot station. Which aside from some holes is functional. Then engineers begin to dismount and carefully inspect the area.

You carefully scan the horizon, carefully looking for possible enemies. After about half an hour, one of the engineers returns to give a report.

"Were pretty sure that the depot had no defences at all after they lost their Zaku patrol. So after that it would have been pretty easy for pretty much anybody to roll in and take the place. The fuel tanks have been set fire too, though I suspect that was just to hide how much they syphoned off. Same might go for all of the missing spare parts. They probably just took them to either spite us, or to retool for use on tanks... God, I hope they haven't got any MORE Zaku's. But where in gods great earth would they get them from? Also, is there anything left in the command center? Any survivors? And recordings from security systems? If we can see what happened it would be immensely helpful.

wide area sweep at low speeds with sonar. We'd have to assume a high minovsky particle density so we're going to be primarily worried about enemy patrols getting out backsides. Normal Zaku armor should be effective against 120mm to the chest, but our backsides are going to be very open. supposedly its lighter weight makes it far more accurate (it does have a much smaller clip size, though, at 32 instead of 100). Out-of-universe context is that the 120mm looked too wacky when they drew 0083. Zeonic Front retconned so that the 90mm was available during the OYW, as an upgrade (somehow). most subsequent media portrays it as thus

The 90mm is F2 territory and you wont be seeing them just yet, so no it's not available.

The Shotgun is short ranged but highly damaging and a wide spread. Zolomon probably would make best use of it, and you broach to subject to him. He gleefully rearms his Desert Zaku with a Shottie.

    >And is our saber repaired? Could we use it with our Zaku instead of an axe?

    You can if you wish.

    So final loadout:
    You
120mm Machine Gun, (100 rounds, 4 reloads, left hip)
2x 3 shot Leg Mounted Rocket Launchers
    4 Cracker Grenades (Right Hip)
    Heat Saber (Back Plate)

    >Zol Newtype talk.
    >Now.

You broach the subject obliquely with Zol, but truth be told both of you only have the vaguest notion of what a newtype is that neither of you can be certain.
Though you DO bring up the time he took out a pair of airplanes with a heat hawk a lot.

From what you can tell, it might just be instinct on an incredible level, but then again, maybe this is what being an newtype is all about. Zolomon doesn't FEEL very new.

"Besides, I'm not the guy who's been fighting the war with his targeting computer switched off."

There is a brief uncomfortable pause.

    "We get targeting computers?"

    >>7003682

Given that you now have a good excuse to go tinkering around with your Zaku you discover the following.
It DOES have a targeting computer, but you honestly think that you'd be better off without it. It's probably good practice for you to do everything manually anyway.

You attempt to think up some interesting movement or fire patterns to pull in. You think up some rudimentary Sword and Shield maneouvers and add them in. You may have to remove them if you switch back to the axe though.

You also find out that your crackers can be set to a time, so you set some hotkeys out for this as well.

    This takes one day.

After this, do you wish to do some Recon in an attempt to flush out some feddies? Another squad is about to go out on patrol, you could probably ask them to go with you.
