THIS IS NO ZAKU GENTLEMEN, NO ZAKU

Previous threads all up on sup/tg/... just look for the tag: Zeonquest.

You are Zeonic Mobile Suit Ace Sir David Lister, of 321 Company. The rest of your squad consists of THE KING OF AXES and a snarky artillery specialist: Together you fight crime!

Wait no, that's not right. Especially the last part, what with all the times you've caused Nuclear Explosions and all.

    THE STORY SO FAR
You are returning back to the 67th Supply Depot after clearing out another possible bolt hole for the local Federation Guerilla's who are begin to mass and get their shit together.
You also have to help the depot prepare a shakedown test for an experimental mobile tank that will be arriving in just over 3 days.

You have finally managed to get intel that the enemy forces have hijacked a train containing heavy fortification equipment and taken it to a disused Tin mine.

Your Journey back to base is largely uneventful, when you arrive you relay the intelligence you were able gain from the Tank Barracks. On the strength of your intel, they worry about the fate of their missing Zaku squad that they sent to find the captured train.

    It is 7:00pm at night.

    >look into finding another pilot, look for specific skills such as being able to both kick ass, and take names

This would take a couple of hours to find any old pilot. To find one with decent specifications within the base will take longer (assuming such a pilot exists here.)

You bring up what happened with the local Depot commander. He just shrugs.

"We just don't have the manpower to police an entire state. Hell we barely have the manpower to estabilish law and order in an area a third of what we've taken. After the Colony Dropped, power supplies got cut all over the country, about 70% of the population were killed, and there was a damn near collapse of government control. It's basically Mad Max out there. I'd imagine the stories the same all over america, if not the world."

There is one location left to visit. That being the disused tin mine. Intel you captured from the Tank Barracks indicate that this may be the where the federal forces have been massing. It also indicates that the feds have captured ANOTHER train, including it's heavy fortifications that were intended for the 67th depot.

You also need to put 25 more hours into preparing the test. You could do it in two days if you pushed yourself, but a few hours before bed, or possibly spending the day preparing the test and then attacking the Mines at night?
You'd probably be lacking sleep the next day though.

Helps to know where all the entrances to the mines are.
I'm getting the feeling though that the heavy fortifications + gun emplacements will be OUTSIDE the entrances.

Don't think it will be an easy way out of this one.
    1) Recon the enemy forces
    2) Put up a fire mission while we close in
    3) Pop smoke, move fire barrage back towards any reinforcements streaming out of the entrances.
    4) Get in to close combat ASAP to limit the use of their firepower. GOUFY TIME

Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way of air to ground assets in the area. Artillery guns are possible, but since they'll be using the same weapons as you are, you'd best be careful for counter-battery fire.

Ultimately it looks like you wont be getting the pilot dossiers today, so can I assume that you spend the rest of day doing more work on the test before going to bed?

I agree with this plan of action.

And who knows, we might even be able to take out all of their armor without having to collapse the mine. After which they could either try to escape via the tunnels or just surrender.

Either way we get the chance to rescue any surviving Zeon personnel and/or discover more intelligence.

Anyway we go about it, we'll be needing that Federation radio in order to listen in on their frequencies.

They airdropped your Zaku in a day from a Fat Uncle transport that had a spare space and was heading in your direction anyway. Even then that was because you were trading on your ace status.
You COULD probably do it again and demand for an aerial dropping mission, but I'd rule you wouldn't be able to trade on your 'Ace status' for a while afterwards.

The next morning comes with a ton of work in your inbox. The Depot head has forwarded three possible candidates four your perusal, as well as some recon photos of the mine. As always there are requests from the Test Team asking for more imput.

TIME NEEDED FOR TEST: 16 HOURS

You stop for lunch and read over the pilot dossiers whilst doing so.

    First pilot: GABRIEL ZOLA

A decent pilot who took part in the battle of loum. Gabriel has adapted well to fighting in the earth sphere, and has several kills to his name. He is an adaptive and capable pilot, more comfortable with up close and dirty combat over long range sniping.
He's also managed to survive losing his Zaku twice, once during a patrol, and again recently to an enemy tank ambush. Both of these times Zola was able to account well for himself before being forced to escape. In both cases, his Zaku was either retrieved by friendly forces, or he activated the self destruct.

What sort of range is the Hidolfer's main gun supposed to have? If we were able to get into position to reacon the Feddie base we could laser com to an aircraft at high altitude and they in turn could send the data to the Hidolfer.

It would certainly be a good test of it's big gun. Since the base is a certain distance away we could request that the aircraft not scramble until we're scheduled to be nearly at the target. All we'd need to do is wait perhaps another day for the big beast to be delivered.

    Cont.

    Ruubens Arronax

Often made fun of his looks, Ruubens is still a highly effective pilot with no real weaknesses in a Mobile Suit.
Outside of it, well, he hasn't adapted to the earth all that well. He is still hazed over the one time he ran away screaming from a deer. He also isn't used to actual weather yet.
Ruubens used to be an MS engineer, until he was forced to pilot in combat, he applied for a transfer and was accepted. Prior to this, he also used to pilot a MS-06V Zaku Tank on salvage runs.
He adapts well to complicated plans, however he sometimes lacks forward initiative, his skills otherwise are excellent.

Might be a good idea to actually have a recon look on the mines defences before we decide to drop our expensive prototype into it all.
I'm guessing the feddies can detect something of that size entering the atmosphere so they'd probably be alerted.
And why cram 2 of our best pilots into our own suit and pretend to surrender? Just limits our options and firepower.

But yeah, I laughed too, and I'm the one who did the shoop.

    Plato Schultz

Another pilot who was in Loum. Plato managed to survive the loss of his Zaku 1 and then was able to infiltrate an enemy Battleship and steal it's escape pod. He made it back to friendly lines and fought the rest of the battle in a spare Gattle. He was transferred down recently when his CO finally remembered that he was an MS pilot.
He appears to be adapting well to fighting on earth, but he's only been down about two weeks.
His piloting is considered highly average, and his instructors have noted his reliance on automation such as targeting computers and factory set routines, and rank his ability to move manually very low, barely passing the MS test.

Because I'll be honest, the sort of guy who could infiltrate an enemy battleship, steal its escape pod, and then go straight back into the fight has Balls of steel.

I vote Ruubens. Hilarity from his appearance aside, we don't have anyone who actually specializes in engineering yet, and that could be useful. So far all we have to go on are our own self-taught attempts, that's not gonna get us far.

Gabriel seems like a solid second choice, but he sounds a bit too much like Zolomon-lite to me. Plato doesn't sound all that promising. Balls of steel aside, he doesn't seem to have that much actual initiative, and his by-the-books routines will probably get him into trouble considering what our squad usually runs into. I peg him at being shot down once he has to actually face other Mobile Suits, not just tanks and planes.

Whilst you're deliberating here's the recon data about the Tin Mine.

You have some recon shots from about a month ago (they can send a recon plane up if you want though, this would take an evening, and would be best if done shortly, as the light will fade around 7 or 8) it shows that there are at least three exits from the mines, all large enough to accomodate Mobile Suits.

The background infomation you've found on the mine is... interesting.

Set up by an eccentric Scotsman called Dirk Boatmurdered, the mine was named after him, and supplied tin for several decades. There are references to the mans irrational phobia of elephants, as well as an abject hatred for rhesus macaques. There are also references to something called: The Lava Switch, but you're 90% sure that has to be just a name for the canteen or something.
The plant was shut down in 66, in the aftermath of a massive industrial accident that scalded several hundred workers to death - there are strange mentions on how this is attributed to a Monarch Butterfly and something called a Tantrum Spiral.
Frankly it all sounds rather made up, the plans at least make some sense, even if they do appear to be a bit haphazard.

Then agree to take Ruubens in as our resident Wrench Wench. When Jolyne gets the Hildolfr, Ruubens takes our old suit and Plato takes Jolyne's (fire support doesn't require quite as much fancy footwork).

Also, >>7030555 has the right plan for how to incorporate Gabriel into the unit.

Your order the Recon plane to do a recon run, as a high and safe as possible. You already have some basic idea of the layout.

Radio contact is crackly, it largely gives out the further Plato goes in his tiny prop plane. Around about 4pm, when he should be over the Mine you get a garbled report.

"...heavily fortified [static] no sign of [static] the mine proper... [sound of dull explosions]... heavy [static] ...ple A, repeat [static] Ack Ac[signal lost]"

You get in contact with California HQ and inform them of the situation. Unfortunately they can't give you support at this time, as all units are currently supporting our troops in Canada as Federal forces in Greenland attempt an aerial assault there.

They suggest attacking the base by night, they can also hasten the drop of the Hildolfr if you want it. But without putting it through a proper shakedown test, it will not work to 100% effectiveness.

We use the Hidolfr. Assming they've set up everything from that train, we're going to need everything we can throw at them. Probaably assign the Zaku I as a bodyguard for the Hidolfr, if it gets finished in time.

Tactics-wise, probably do some basic recon, and then use our squad and the other Zaku squad to flank the base from the sides; then bringing up the Hidolfr, the Zaku I and whatever Magellas or whatever we've got left as a linebreaker while the main forces are busy countering at the flanks.

We need to focus on killing those Heavy Guns first, though, with ATs and Magella tanks as secondary targets. Advancing by fire, making best use of cover and support fire from our artillery chicks, and keeping active scans going for ambushes/mines.

Also give the whole base the rundown on those Anti-Magella tactics we thought of, as well as notes on the Feddie's anti-MS tactics we found, too. Also anything we can do to boost morale prior to the attack wold be good, too.

See, all that heavy AT stuff just makes me want to shell it with artillery all the more.

Shit, I don't know. It sounds like they got the fortifications set up already, so a frontal attack sounds fairly suicidal. A night attack preceded by bombardment from Jolyne sounds like our best bet, trying to catch them off guard. And if we can recover some of the stuff then so much the better for us.

Failing that, let's find the air vents to the mine and start dumping gasoline fumes and methane down them. They both are heavier than air, so they sink. And either everyone in the base dies or somebody lights a match and the mountain explodes; either way, we win.

The base has enough parts for two Zaku 1's. It can put Zola and one other spare pilot in them and have them guard the base.

In the meantime, the base can allocate a full squad of Zaku IIJ's to you. If you put Ruubens in your old Zaku that makes 7 Zaku's total, they'll also allow you to choose their loadout.

If you move to attack once your sure that the Zaku 1's are ready, you will be able to move out and attack the base at midnight. The base also offers smoke canister shells which are interchangeable between the Megella cannon and Jolyne's 180mm Backpack Cannon.

I suppose we can use our Gouf's manuverability to give the base gunners fits, and with accurate support fire from cover we should have a decent chance at bringing down the heavy guns.

We need to blitzkrieg the static defences before they have time to mobilize the tanks and any Zakus the've slapped together - getting caught between the two would be a bad idea.

Perhaps we should start at the far entrance, seal it with crackers, and then move on rinse/repeat for the central entrance and invade through the last entrance? That should prevent them flanking us, and cut off the retreat of any important capturable personell.

I say we wait for Hildorf, that thing is pure murder against Zakus and just about anything else in open terrain. And we should also run the shakedown tests.

Because it's not like the mine is going anywhere and if the feddies attack us during the wait or testing, I am quite confident that the forces we have right now can easily repel those 3 or so Zaku II's, those 15 Mangellans and any Type-51 feddies might have.

However if we wait and the feddies just sit in the mine, they will fortify it further and make the assault even harder, but on the other hand if they attack and we repel them, they will definitely sustain casualties and therefore have less firepower when we attack the mine. But that goes both ways, if we lose suits during the attack.

Mmmm. It's a good plan, although i'm leery of splitting our forces...

Though the mix looks good. Give Zolomon's accompaniment a Magella cannon, as well as Ruubens. Hidolfir's bodyguards should have Bazookas or MGs for close-in defence. I agree with it having an overstrength accompaniment, since odds are /something/ is going to go wrong.

Works for me, I suppose. We should take either an MG or a shotgun. Probably the MG, since we're more experienced with it.
