    I'll be brief, here.

Vampires and werewolves and all that lot are scary, still, if they're done well. But don't tell me that you can read Dracula without even once thinking of a certain damnable vampire of the sparkly persuasion. Even Lestat makes the vampires a little less... monster-y. Nowadays, there's no fear, there. Most of the stories with monsters are about how they're like people, too.

So why not create a new monster? Something that takes the traits that made the old ones scare us, and puts them in a new skin, one without the old romanticized feel. Sure, vampires and the rest are good, but even the old-style fae are a bit too understandable and not-horrifying, sometimes.

Help me, /tg/... You folks have never let anyone down before. You're the keepers of the Vault of Win.

I'll put the Slender Man up here as an example. He scares the crap out of me, to be honest. And he's capable of being used in so many different ways. The Tall Men, for example, are going to be making a few appearances in a mesoamerican post-apocalyptic setting I'm designing. Do they follow all the "rules" of Slender Man? No. But, on the other hand, Slendy doesn't have rules, per se. The more you think you know about him, the more incorrect you are, and while there are some things that carry over, he's flexible enough that you can have forty or fifty different versions of him, and you can point to them all and say "That's Slender Man" as easily as you can point to Dracula, Barlow, and Edward, and say "Those are vamp-- Well, okay, the first two are vampires. I don't know what the hell that last one is."

OP I agree with this but, Why not try making them scary again? I've been working on a Viral look at Vampires and have had people actually Shudder at the thought of them. Also, I fucking loved Dracula Excellent read and Never once thought of Lestat or The Fag-pires.

I suppose it's just a desire for new monsters. Specifically, new monsters that are untainted by horribleness.

Some people can do vampires really, really well, but overall, with most people, nothing new can come of them. It's just hard to come up with something genuinely scary, when it comes to the Usual Monsters, and it's not the fault of the authors or the GMs or whatever. Hence, my sudden desire to try and design an even dozen different monsters, each hitting at least one major fear/theme, and each being capable of just as much variation as vampires and the rest of the lot.

    >>7209970

Hrm. Personally, while I like the NWOD vampires, they're still, overall, too understandable and human. Granted, some of them can scare the shit out of me, but as a whole... Nah. It's conceivable that I could negotiate with one, and not only avoid getting eaten, but actually come out better than I was before, because I had some sort of usefulness.

    Slenderman replaces vampires.
    >> Anonymous 12/19/09(Sat)22:09 No.7210218
Well, one of the problems is in trying to make a monster that's genuinely incomprehensible and that's still scary without resorting to the tried-and-true "IT EATS PEOPLE" stuff.

For starters, how about all of the monster's victims having been accidental? Or perhaps incidental is a better term; they died as a side effect of the monster's existence, not because the monster was trying to kill them.

Next, make it unstoppable by any normal means. I would tie this in with part one by making the monster's thing be that it actually alters the laws of physics around it in order to exist. Pick a selection of physical constants without which neither life nor matter should be capable of existing and assume that the monster in fact somehow exists under those conditions.
    >> Anonymous 12/19/09(Sat)22:09 No.7210231
    >>7210218

And have some small forewarning given of its appearance in an area. Have a particular set of conditions under which it can manifest in our reality, but make the existence of those conditions itself the product of fundamentally unpredictable processes. So you know that something horrible is on its way, probably within the next few minutes, but you have no way of getting warning any earlier than that.

Finally, make sure that its appearance is fundamentally wrong in some way. Just for example, have its "legs" visibly move through other parts of its body despite being noticeably solid. Have it be constantly changing shape, slowly enough that its flow from one form to another is clearly perceptible. Have it evoke synaesthesia; people unfortunate enough to be near it can hear its scent, taste its texture, smell its appearance, feel the noises it makes, and have other inexplicable sensations created by its presence. And have it only seem to perceive and interact with real objects in a manner that is nonsensical and impossible for beings actually in reality, such as us.

    The Not Rights

The subject appears to be a normal human, but something is off about him: one eyeball located off to the side of its head, feet instead of hands, teeth made of the top joints of fingers, etc. They've been popping up more and more recently, but no one is still particularly sure how they rise. Some believe they are an organism attempting to pose as a human because they lack a society or culture of their own. Anyone one who reacts negatively or points out one of their defects is immediately ripped apart limb from limb, for the Not Rights are immensely paranoid about anyone pointing out holes in their "perfect" disguise. So if the window person at McDonald's happens to have just a mouth lined by a circle of eyes, just give them your money, take your food, and wait til you're out of earshot before you scream.

I've got something I made for a Call of Cthulhu game I'm running for Christmas for /tg/'s approval.

I don't have a name for them yet, but they're...well, the closest thing to call them would be bugs. Their eggs are tiny white globules suspended in dark, thick translucent gel they secrete from ovipositors located in their abdomens. They'll lay their eggs anywhere--in walls, in animals, on floors, in people. But contact with the eggs brings you into what is basically a sliver of frozen time. More on that in a bit.

The eggs will eventually hatch, and, if inside a person, will slowly move through the victim's body to their brain (or equivalent organ) and promptly nest themselves in it, using their tiny motes of psychic potential to take over the victim's mind and body bit by bit. Soon the victim is completely dominated by these alien hivemind worms. "Worm zombies" have the accumulated knowledge and memories of the victim, but are easily identified by a complete lack of the concept of causality. They literally do not understand that effect follows cause, because they are perceiving all moments in time simultaneously. They may also have impeded movement--after all, they've got larvae crawling in their muscles and bones.

But seriously, you just have to describe them better. You meet an unnaturally pale, thin girl, who looks like she's being hunted by something. "Save me!" she cries, and you feel a tug at your heartstrings as she looks in your eyes. Suddenly the vampire hunters burst into view, and you find yourself standing between her and the hunters, vowing not to let them harm the innocent girl. She escapes, smirking, while you fight until a cleric removes the charm she cast on you. Later when you confront her again, she defends herself with packs of twisted wolves and bats, and finally with her spawn - vampires who look even more pale and thin, some who look like they just rose from the grave (some in fact whom you might recognize from the local town).

Or you hear about gruesome deaths - bodies mostly eaten and unrecognizable - in the village, and when you discover the friendly innkeeper bearing the wounds you gave the werewolf and kill him, you soon realize that he wasn't the only werewolf in town as more people go missing or are found dead. When you see a werewolf's transformation, you're struck by how *wrong* it looks - the body twisting and deforming before your eyes, and you feel sick to your stomach seeing it.
    >> Anonymous 12/19/09(Sat)22:30 No.7210468
To create a monster you first need a fear.

Original Dracula was about fear of the foreigner and fear of sex. The smooth, swarthy foreigner was going to sweep in and take your women. Not only would he take them, they would love it and go all foreign themselves.

The werewolf is about fear of the bestial. It's a common belief that civilization is just thin veneer over savagery. Losing control and giving into your bestial instincts would cause the whole facade to collapse. See also Mr. Hyde. This fear was prominent during Victorian times.

What are people afraid of now? I mean really afraid of. You've got people in this country terrified of socialists, Mexicans, terrorists, atheists or anything Other. Why? What are the fears driving that and how can you twist that into a monster.

I'd say that's all rooted in fear of loss. Loss of privilege, loss of income, loss of a sense of security and place. You need a monster that attacks those things. Something that eats people you can kill. Something that takes away everything you hold dear? That's something that taps into modern fears.

One type of enemy that has two huge claws and a mouth FULL of pointy teeth.

All it does is advance slowly towards you crying stuff like "Please... just leave me alone" "No.... don't come any closer" "w... what ARE you, pp...please, don't hurt me" With really humanlike voices. And if it reaches you, you die.

Later on in the game you'll see the first human you've seen the entire game through a window. You talk through the intercom and all of a sudden the door flies open. In stumbles one of those creatures. As it makes its way towards your new friend he backs into a corner going "Oh GODDD NOOOO I don't want to DIEEEE" it reaches him, and eats him whole. The creature then turns towards the window, looks at you and goes "Oh GODDD NOOOO I don't want to DIEEEE".

Time to get ahead of the curve. How long can zombies last and can we come up with a better monster? Solo unnatural predators are passe IMHO. You need a thing that it is hard for one man to defend himself against. Something tying into the lack of community people are always lamenting about.

They whisper something. You recognise the words, vaguely, but can't make out any meaning. You ask them what they are saying, but they ask you the same thing. You're running the sound over in your head, over and over. It means something. This mad word, this mad sentence. It's important. You say it out loud, rolling it over in your mouth. You barely notice the day pass, work is the same, the drive home the same as always. You just go with the flow, not saying it out loud now, you don't want to seem crazy. But the words are still there. What does it mean? You write it down. Phoenetically. Your wife lays out your dinner and calls you into the kitchen. You shout back, the words almost slip out, but you manage to just repeat dinner to her. She laughs. She eats, you eat. She tells you about her day, and you nod and smile like you're supposed to. She can't know how important this problem you're working on is. Maybe she could help you find out. You take hours to get to sleep. It's on the tip of your tongue, you've almost cracked it but sleep takes it from you.

Basically, you have these angel-like hyper-dimensional aliens that have the defense of being 'quantum locked'. In short: they are BLAZINGLY fast, as long as you cannot see them. If you blink or look away for a second, they go from being a stone angel to something that can throw you through time and gorge itself on the days you might have lived with a single touch.

Its rather paranoia inducing: and enemy that could be anywhere, and looking away from it dooms you. And god help you if there is more than one.

I have a theory which states that monstrous evil is different from demonic evil. "Demons" are ideals- malice given shape. Monsters, while terrible, are being sculpted from flesh and blood and thought and will. I also believe that monsters are much, much more horrifying than demons.

Monstrous evil is human evil. Take out the human element and what you have left is a hollow caricature of real evil; a mask to scare children with.

Getting ahead of the curve is incredibly hard. To make something scare a lot of people you need it to screw the things they can identify with. Getting ahead of the curve would need you to figure out the problems of the future.

I'm not saying it is impossible, vampires are older than what made Dracula frightening (or at least versions of them are).

It'd be easier and more effective to make a twist on what frightens now. Like taking say, these zombie archetypes and making something new out of them.

Or try going more basic and primal, trying to get at things that will always scare people, or should if done right. Like fear of the unknown and all its extensions. Also isolation and helplessness figure in there I think.

The weekend. Some time to think. Your wife is mad with you for something. You're mad with her. She says you don't talk to her. She doesn't talk to you. She's watching the news so you watch too. The newscaster is talking about riots in the city. It cuts to the crowd. They're chanting something. The words. You turn the volume up. They have more of it. They have figured more of it out. The volume is at it's maximum and your face is next to the television. This is amazing, the puzzle is almost complete in your head now. You just need to hear more. You whisper the words along with them. Your wife grabs the remote and turns off the TV. You grab it back off her. She's crying. You start to cry. You start to explain to her what happened, you say the words to her. You tell her what you know. She asks what you're talking about, you sound crazy. You tell her you don't know what she's talking about. She is acting crazy. She goes to stay at her sisters. You don't sleep this weekend, you start making tapes and playing them back. You make tapes and play them back, chanting along. You've almost got it.

heres a great mutant human for you, I've been wanting to stick this in a game for a while.

It is vaguely man-shaped, but its arms are impossibly thin and long and end in jagged claws. It's skin is pale, wrinkled and dirty. Tufts of matted fur emerge at weird places all over its body, particularly around its lamprey mouth. It's tiny human legs are shrunken and twisted, being dragged along the ground behind them. It peers at you with human-like eyes, and begins to giggle, dragging itself towards you with an increasing speed.

The trick is not to have it appear out of nowhere like that. Have it follow the group for several days, maybe even a few sessions of play. They may glimpse a small form on the crest of a hill at dusk that quickly dissapears. Then, at night, they laughter nearby, perhaps following them as they set up camp, are just drifting off to sleep or the like.

They wont ever see it, though they may find marks in the dirt like something has been dragged across the ground alarmingly close to their camp in the morning.

Play this out for a while, don't use it too often and don't use it too seldom. Then, once they are in a cave, ruined large building or whatever, seperate one of them somehow, they fall through the floor or the like and lose their weapon, and have to search for a way out.
    Then have it appear.

The thing doesn't have to be strong, the pc will be disarmed. just make it very good at grappling.
They will shit themselves with fear.

So you start to say the words. If she only heard a little more, she'd understand. She tell's you to stop. You tell her to stop. She grabs your shoulders and starts to shake you. You grab her shoulders and shake her. A flash of panic flashes across her face and she smacks you hard in the face. You hit her back. Why did you do that? Whilst you sleep it types in an e-mail to that girl you always wanted to ask out, it is poorly written and short. It steals things you want. If you mention you want to lose weight it takes your food. When you wake up you see it gently stroking your hair. If you lash out it disappears for a while but then tries harder to please you. >>Incidentally the zombie was around last time this weighed heavily on peoples minds, during the cold war.

Not quite. The Cold War boogeyman was the Communist, manifesting in pod people and mind-controlling invaders from Mars. The zombie didn't get big until the '60s and '70s when the economy and social-structures became unpredictable.

We might be able to reboot the vampire as the evil aristocrat. He's smoother, smarter and better than you and he is utterly inhuman. Like the downsizing consultants or corrupt politicians he represents he doesn't care about you. You are nothing more than a blood-bag to him. And since he disguises himself so well as a human, nobody will listen to your warnings.

Mr. Hyde has been brought up and that archetype is eternal. He's the crack-fueled, criminal of the '80s to the meth-fueled gang-banger of today. They don't care about you or the society that protects you. You see some echoes of that in serial killers as well, but even they have been made cuddly with Dexter. Anti-social criminals are such a part of the background you would need an awesome twist to make them monster-level scary.

Fear is achieved through taking advantage of what people don't understand. This includes:

    Death
    Apathy
    Homicidal anger
    Strangeness

Couple that with praying on society's current fears, and you've got a pretty good recipe for something terrifying.

Say, a terrorist who doesn't hate you but insists that he's about to blow the building up because he loves you so much. And then you notice his pupils aren't round, but are rectangular like a goat's.

    l'echo

Apologies for the clunky fiction, but I'm still trying to work this thing out.

The echo is a kind of weaponised meme. It is a string of nonsense phenomes that sound familiar and intriguing to any who hear it. This makes them repeat it to try and figure out what it means. It's like a really catchy tune that you can't get out of your head. The echo also amplifies the mirror response in a person. This makes them do whatever people around them are doing. If someone says something to them, they respond by repeating it, though not always verbatim. If they are attacked, they fight back slightly more fiercely. If they are with a group that is attacking another person, they will start to as well.

It's a sort of take on zombies. Alone they are not dangerous, they will not even attack anyone. They are only dangerous if you listen to them. But they want to be around people, so they will follow you and try and talk to you. If you run, they chase. If you fight, they fight back. If you do nothing, you will be infected.

What happens when you take a "human" and take the "humanity" out? What if there was a creature that could do that? It's not fast or strong, it doesn't kill you or even leave much of a scar. It's tiny, pale, and unnaturally thin. It just follows you, for days and days, getting faster and larger every time you do something cruel or heartless. And one day you step on a bug or push someone out your way on the subway, and it's big enough to see. And one day, you try to scare someone, try to hurt them, and it's big enough to take you. You're not damaged much, but what it took is gone for good.

The only thing scarier than a fae that has it in for you is one who starts to like you. They genuinely want what is good for you, but they have a mad idea of how to give it to you.

They notice you flirting with a girl, and they place a love spell on her. Now she won't leave you alone. She calls you every fifteen minutes. She's leaving notes under your door. She shows up at your job with homemade lunch. You find her clothes in your house. She's in your bed when you get home. She's cut your name into her arm. And so on.

And what you guys are thinking up in this thread... doesn't work. So many of these ideas are based off a fear of compassion... which we don't have. Seriously, a monster that you can only kill by loving it? That would imply that we're afraid of caring and love. Which we aren't.

Today, society is afraid of terrorists. It's in their fucking name. TERRORist. How do you make something that's supposed to make you terrified in the first place to be even scarier without turning it into something comically monstrous?

I had a great idea a while ago.

Creatures who materialize at night and only hunt in packs. They feed on fear and other negative emotions, and they favor "hunting" on isolated roads far from society where bands of travelers sometimes pass through.

When night comes, someone may notice a faint whispering sound. They might even think they see something in the darkness. But they'll probably be dismissed as foolish or crazy. The next night, someone else may notice the same thing; whispers in the dark. It may even become apparent that the whispers even mention the name of the individual who hears them. As the nights draw on, more people will hear the whispers and see faint shapes moving past the fire's light. And then, someone notices that--although the fire is as big as it was the night before--it seems to be casting less light.

At night, the victims are haunted by dreams of themselves walking down a road alone at night with the things getting closer, and closer, and the whispering getting louder and louder. They can barely sleep because of these nightmares.

Eventually someone will snap and feel compelled to go to the firelight's edge to challenge the creatures. They'll be dragged away into the dark by pale, gnarled hands. Tensions will mount as the victims try to figure out the best course of action, and mistakes will be made. If the victims don't reach civilization soon, the firelight will dwindle to nothing and the creatures will claim them.

And each day, the creatures disappear. But each night, they return to harry the travelers.

I agree, too. That's why I sometimes use Draugers in my campaigns. A Drauger is basically a Norse Vampire that looks like a fucked up dog with 5 arms (4 for walking, 1 for manipulation) that lives in bogs. Some people think that Grendle was a form of Drauger. Either way, a Drauger is a totally merciless, ragefull, semi-humanoid monster that eats the fuck out of people.

I have a futuristic campaign where a race called Drauga (guess where the inspiration came from) come out of nowhere on splinter shaped boarding craft and raid and pillage until only carnage remains. No one can tell how they got the spacefaring technology because they appear to be very stupid, and still use clubs as weapons. That is very, very interesting! I think people (at least Americans) fear the "removal of the veil" when they have to actually face up to a potentially dangerous or painful world. Our obsession with labor saving devices and matrix-like feeds of entertainment should support this.

The doppleganger variant is a cool idea, but I immediately thought of the Mothman. A completely ethereal creature that we cannot possibly predict or understand that turns your brain into shit.

This could even be used in a small village or town. Imagine losing ground each night, possibly with fires on the edge of the town simply going out and refusing to light and then this no-fire zone expanding further into the town as the nights progress.

And then imagine being one of the big, strong adventurers who is chosen to go out into the night to face these unnameable things.

And furthermore: the three essential elements of horror are: abhorrence (that just looks wrong), fear (oh SHIT! that's going to fuck me up) and dread (I'm doomed).

Zombies fit this to a tee: the dead ambulating, and rotting, is not just unnatural but wrong. Zombies will fuck your shit up if they a hold of you, and they usually outnumber you... their slow, staggering gait prolongs the dread.

I remember an eldrich horror idea from Mage: The Ascension. The wizards get a tip about a horror that's invaded from the Far Realms, so they're expecting Cthugha or Mii-Go or the like. Instead they burst in on a little old lady, living with cats and a bit senile. She's batty, but kind, and the first obstacle for the wizards is to keep their secret in front of this mundane woman. She's a lonely retiree, bit of arthritis, bit of a stammer, so she'll talk them into staying for tea and scones, telling stories about the "good old times" to get them to keep her company as long as she can.

Later, doing something unrelated, one of the wizard player characters develops a nervous tic... and starts stammering like the old lady.

The eldritch horror was right where they got the tip-off, but it wasn't a monster, and it wasn't the old lady -- it was a meme. The old lady's stammering will develop into Tourette's Syndrome, as she compulsively blurts out nonsense phrases that a wizard would recognize as snatches of a summoning spell... and the Tourette's Syndrome gets progressively "worse." And anyone who listens to this long enough will pick up the meme and start degenerating into that same orderly fashion until their verbal cortex can only make the sounds of the summoning spell.

Abhorrence: you can't speak properly. Fear: just listening to it puts you in danger. Dread: eventually your nervous tic will develop into full-blown incantation to start the invasion, and you'll be at ground zero. Iconic image: not a picture, but an iconic s-sound. Anyone w-who has a speech impediment becomes f-feared. Fickz. S-sorry. Lortz.

You're a drooling, inbred retard if you think Edward Cullen and Lestat are somehow less monstrous than Dracula. They're horrific in the extreme. AFAIK Dracula didn't kill women, only turned them, and he was vastly less weird to them than Edward was. Lestat fucking embraced a child and killed every time he fed.

Twilight vampires also always kill their prey. ALWAAAAAAAAYS. They're hard core snuff fetishists. Even the morally "best" vampire around, Edward Cullen, is still obsessed with a schoolgirl 1/5th his age (imagine a 45 year old watching a 9 year old sleep every night for weeks, flying into a rage when she wants to leave for a trip, etc., multiply that by two, and you have Eddie).

Once inside he slowly does a dance towards you to a gradually increasing tune "La-da-da-de-de, La-da-da-de-da!" in his voice, which for all it's roughness sounds like an infant. The black toothed man takes the form of a tall gaunt figure wrapped in a tight black cloak. His name comes from his most defining feature, a wide mouth twisted into an open rictus grin, reveling a row of gleaming black teeth. He obeys the usual pattern of chase – catch – consume followed by many childhood monsters. His motives for doing so are unknown. It is not impossible to escape him, as otherwise there would be no accounts to describe him. All one need to do is outrun him to some place of safety. He prefers to attack solitary targets, and seems to compulsively avoid places where people congregate, even if only a few are present at the time.

His most usual characteristic is his signature method of stalking his prey. While closing in, he manifests the ability to muffle all sound in his vicinity. It is not so much that he makes no sound, but rather that there is no sound near him to be heard. Accounts include mentions of such actions as pounding on doors, breaking glass, and even breathing producing no sound.

This skill is more dangerous than it may first appear, as when attempting to flee from a pursuit type monster an individual’s sense of hearing is their primary means of gathering information about the parts of their surroundings that they cannot directly see. When there is not sound to be heard, the potential victims perception is limited to what is directly in front of them in their field of vision. Most accounts include some mention of looking over their shoulder to see if he is still perusing them, only to see it drawing closer with each glance. Doing so is not recommended, as he often chooses stalking grounds that are cluttered with debris or other obstacles. If you trip on these, in all likelihood he will be able to catch you. The best possible strategy for avoidance is to run as fast as possible towards the nearest populated space, and never look behind you. Do not stop until you can hear sound again. Wearing a noisemaker of some kind is recommended to be able to better gauge when you have passed beyond the reach of his influence.

When it comes to traditional monsters I kind of like them human. They may have instincts or urges - it might be easier to slip into a rage, or tempting to bite into that juicy neck but it's not unstoppable, something that can't be avoided.

Because I like my monsters human, because monstrosity is much more horrifying and interesting when it comes from a human source. When someone feels that supernatural migh flowing through his veins and decides that his fellow sentients aren't worth shit beyond being blood bags or something for him to tackle to the ground and tear apart.

That's why in Werewolf: The Forsaken my favorite antagonists were the Predator Kings.

They were not only the werewolves who exulted in their newfound power by killing and eating their former brethren, but they were the *largest* portion of the Pure. Even more than the evangelical fire-and-brimstone preacher wolves.

And they joined willingly. the PKs didn't indoctrinate like the Fire-Touched or Ivory Claws do. Those that follow Destroyer Wolf do it of their own volition. They choose to hate society, civilization, technology and Man who spawned it all. They choose to drag people screaming into the night and eat them alive. And they love it.

That's the scary part. For me, at least.

Pic semi-related. The werewolves in Welcome to Hoxford are a lot like that. They're complicit in their monstrosity.

Do you guys think that Xenomorphs have become the new monster?

Another monster that has become popular...I don't know their names, but they are basically totally grotesque mash-ups and many animals, but they all have a general "human" look about them, like they could look like giant disgusting spiders but they have a human torso and horribly disproportionate limbs and melty skin, or they could look like a weird dog-goat thing with human skin and eyes, but everything else is just inhuman. Things like that. you see a lot of drawings of them these days.

This monster lives under the bed. Every night he makes some noise that scares the person in the bed. They may pull up the covers, they may cry, they may run out of the room. But they grow up, and they realise that there is nothing to be worried about. One night they muster the courage to look underneath. They lean over and shine a flashlamp. The coast is clear. Then the monsters quiet brother drops on them from the ceiling.

He makes sure to lick up every drop of blood that his gory body left behind in a trail as he dragged himself under your door. Later he rips off all your skin, but he only needs a little. In his tree, with a needle made from bones he fashions a new suit of wrinkled skin not unlike his own, then vomits a torrent of blood and guts from your own body into this new "flesh suit" he then puts his own skin back own, pulling it up like a set of long-johns. He needs to go hunting again tonight, for he has just become a father.

Well, if you look at the trend monsters have been taking, it looks like it's evolving into the hunted going against bigger and bigger threats. We had solo hunters like vampires, werewolves, and mutants before, and we've recently been into the overwhelming horde aspect that zombies represent. So, why not take it even a step further? What if the monster was the entire enviornment? Like, take the concept of a haunted house, where everything in it is against you (books flying at you, furniture trying to eat you, etc etc) and cranking it up to eleven. Buildings come alive as each room morphs and distorts in the house's attempt to kill you. The layout of the rooms and halls change, doors appear and disappear, things like that. You don't have to keep it applied to just buildings either. It'd be creepy as shit to have trees and bushes morphing and melting in an attempt to off the heroes in a dark forest. If you wanted to run them in games too, it'd work pretty good for a setup. Say the PCs have to rescue a person lost in said house/find some item of importance/find the heart of the house and kill it, and that's just basics.

Pic related. Giygas is always related.

    The Aztecs...

It had all started with the Aztecs...

    ...

[An exerpt from The Armed: From 2011 to Now, by Professor Isiac Horm, dated Febuary 13th, 0003 AA]

Back then, back in 2011, when this had all started, we had all been hearing the stories. 2012 was going to be the end of the world, we were all going to die, the gods were coming down once again. Movies, books, everyone either siding with or against the stories. People kept digging deeper and deeper into the Aztec society, trying to either prove, or disprove the rumors. Civilization then had viewed the people as a highly advanced race, and we were still using their calendars for astronomy and whatnot. It started back in 2008, true. But oh, once 2010 hit, the masses just started to eat things up. Every other week, another book or TV special would come out about this stuff.

Goddamn people just wouldn't leave the subject alone...

In the middle of September, in the year 2011, a group of researchers, both for and against the stories, had gathered to search the newly-discovered ruins of what seemed to be an ancient Aztec library. They had all determined that if there was a definite answer to the 2012 stories, they would be in those ruins. I was with the group, working as the assistant to one professor Hilling Yamato, a renouned archeologist. We expected to find nothing at all. What we actually found, however...was terrifying.

When we reached the ruin entrance, we all began to examine the door. It matched most Aztec design asthetics, with the exception that the entire door, and everything immediately connected to the door, was a blood red. I remember seeing something like a window, in one area. I looked through it, and could have sworn I'd seen myself. It wasn't until we found the text, that we began to suspect anything.

Two personalized forms of previously stated monsters.

You see someone running into an alleyway. You watch, interested, and see them reach the end. There's no way out. They turn around and press themselves against the wall, as it approaches. You see it, a small naked form with ashen skin. The size and shape of a little girl, only, it's hairless, and no holes mark it's ashen skin. As it approached, a child-like voice utters "No, no, stay away! Oh god, OH god! Help me! Don't hurt me! Please stay away, oh please......... ", and at about ten paces away, the victim starts diminishing with every step of the creature. Becoming wrinkled and losing size, collapsing into a husk, with the victim's last breath they scream "No, please, go away... don't hurt me....", and then they're a pile of skin and bones, turning to you the girl-like creature begins to approach. In it's voice you hear it utter "No, please, go away... don't hurt me....."

    Minor Inconvenience?
    >> OPGM 12/20/09(Sun)01:00 No.7212264
    Other updated version....

One day you noticed it, a small pale white worm-like creature, tiny, and insignificant. It follows you no matter where you go. It moves slowly whenever you look at it, but it's always near you, no matter how far or fast you go. Then maybe one day, you push someone, or toss an insult, and then you notice it's a bit bigger. It keeps following, but as it grows it changes. It's no longer a worm. The pale white being looks like an infant, if infants were merely bone, and skin. Whenever you try to confront it, you can't find it, it responds to nothing you do, or say. As it grows, it becomes similar to your shape and size, and it gradually maddens you, causing you to be crueler and crueler to others in your madness. One day it's almost as small as you, perhaps you hit someone, or maybe you just didn't lend someone a pen, when you had a spare, but that day it seems to be following you more than ever. When you go home, and are alone, it does something it never has before. It approaches you, with a smile. It has no teeth, and nothing in it's mouth, a black crescent marrs its perfect white face, and it grabs you. You scream in agony at it's touch, it's razor fingers slice you open, and it slips inside. With your last moment of consciousness you are aware of it's first, and your last thought, "Mine."

No-one will notice any change. It will go on living your life. No-one will ever know what's staring out of your eyes.

Note that this was made after reading maybe the first half or so of the thread.

One of our translators had called us over. Her name was Kinnia Lacus, and she ended up being one of my best friends, and my dearest partner during this scenario. Sadly, as of the time I'm writing this, Kinnia Horm, is now dead, buried outside the shelter. (Or at least, we think the she is.) Regardless, she had found some text, and after translating for us, she began to mumble endlessly. The text was latin, she said. It went on and on about some destroyers, the things we would later refer to as the Eversors, after the original latin. The text didn't belong there, and something odd must have happened. As she continued to mumble, I tried to talk with her, as the others had a quick roundtable. After that, we ended up opening that door.

    That goddamn door...

What we found in that library- no, what we found in that vault, doomed humanity, 15 months after the fact. That said... I belive that what was in that vault could also save all of us...

Let me explain the terror that we had found. Bones piled to the celing, thousand year old bloodstains on the walls. There were bodies that had to have been at least 500 years old, perfectly preserved, almost in stasis. It was a scientific discovery of massive proportions! We took a few of the bodies back to our lab, and what we had found, was-

So, coming back from my drunkening, I find little progress. Quadruple read the organ-vomiting little man in a tree that got some praise just to make sure. Go live somewhere else, use fire or Drano, chop down the tree. Heck, just give him a good cock-punching.

We don't face horrors as our ancestors did. Heck, for those of us in the states we don't even face mid-century horror in the same way thanks to modern communications. Your town is being taken over by a menace? Phones don't go through a local switching office anymore and there are town, county, state and federal police agencies to contact. Plus the Internet and the media. J-Horror made a good rear-guard action, but isolation fear isn't credible where most people live.

To scare a person? You need a societal breakdown. Something the zombie apocalypse delivers nicely, wrapped up with all the other anxieties of our age. Or something that makes you yourself the despised Other, while still remaining yourself to understand what is happening. And I don't know a monster that does that.

Maybe District 9? Haven't seen it, but heard it rocked.

So let's go back to madness. The root of all power is perception, but you can only beat back the real.

You put down the remote control which you'd clicked angrily for five minutes of frustration and your dog has been stabbed in the skull 30 or 40 times.

You wake up, get dressed, get out the door, get into your car, and as you turn the key you emerge from being underwater, gasping and spitting up cold brown ocean.

Perhaps there's some fear to be mined from always having to question the information your decisions are made with. Sort of a taste of old Jacob's Ladder.

So, the latest fear everyone has is terrorism, right?

Consider the latest trend in truly terrifying shit; aliens. Monsters. Cthulhuesque horrors.

All creatures who do horrible things, for reasons entirely behind your comprehension. Creatures with minds that work in ways you cannot begin to fathom. Creatures you simply can't understand.

    Sound familiar?

Agreed. Outside of genre-aware players (Call of Cthulu) or the Zombie Apocalypse it is tough to imprint that idea of "You are on your own. There is no backup. Nobody cares if you live or die. And you will die." nowadays.

That four-armed, tall thin guy? Terrifying... in a fairy tale. In real life? If I don't personally shotgun his ass to hell there are plenty of people (government, university biology departments, bio-tech corporations) who would be more than eager to do it for me. The "Oh no, nobody will believe me!" bit? Yeah, everyone has SFX programs on their computer, but cell-phone video still goes a long way.

Deep One doesn't leave DNA. It's a servitor race, genetically engineered to...fit, not leave trash behind. It devours everything alive, incorporates it into itself, and itself cannot really be damaged outside of nuclear radiation (which destroys its cells).

There's an interesting story an author wrote about a Deep One actually being released. From a foot-tall cannister (where it had been contained however long ago). It devours all people and even some major buildings in southeast Australia before someone else (US) decides to do something about it and send a nuke in. The world wasn't pleased.

I honestly think disease is the last true monster. People these days are incredible germophobes, and disease is almost impossible to see or stop unless you withdraw from society completely; in your isolation, you go crazy.

I think the idea of a disease that makes you lose your rationality is incredibly frightening. You catch some sort of sickness that literally stops your ability to reason stone cold, and you don't notice it until one day you're balancing your checkbook, wondering where all your money's gone, and BAM! you notice that the numbers never add up the same, and you're writing with a bit of chicken bone sharpened to a point, dipping it in an inkwell filled with strange, fetid liquid, eating raw meat while hunched over a deep freezer, and you haven't left the house for days, adding up numbers, adding up numbers, adding up numbers,

Betrayal by the rational is a modern disease, too. Here in the states the number of people who don't trust vaccines (and thus refuse to vaccinated their children) is jumping. The number of people who'll choose homeopathy and faith healing for life-threatening diseases has increased as well.
If one can accept science = magic then there are those slowly working up the fury for a witch hunt.

Huh. What if rational thinking's the disease? What if we are under siege by monsters and elder horrors and our salvation is as much savage ignorance as we can flood our minds with?

Did we survive far longer as tool-making animals, or as pondering creators?

I thought about that. Imagine you separated from your family by grim, flame-thrower wielding troops. Your wife and children, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers begging for salvation. But they have the pox on their cheeks. Death, incurable, contagious.

Too abstract. Too black and white. Might be hard to sell to a modern audience raised on miracle drugs. That's why disease is often portrayed metaphorically as a werewolf curse or a vampire bite.

because it still wants to eat you, or have you eat other people and become a wendigo.

the myths are mainly found in the far north because in places where death by starvation during bitter winter makes cannibalism much more possible. the wendigo myth served to strengthen the social tabboo of cannibalism so people would be afraid to resort to it even in dire situations.

but the idea of becoming, or being posessed by, a horrible cannibal-spirit that's always on the verge of starving to death is still pretty nightmarish

John Shirley, I believe, wrote of a disease that struck mankind. People couldn't get within 10 feet of each other or they'd be sent into a berserker, murderous rage and kill each other. Protagonist was a survivor, managed to find an isolated piece of land. Eventually sees a girl. Seeing as how they can be human to each other at a distance (he has a fence) they get to talking, sharing food, etc. Eventually both of them realize they want something more. They want to test it, maybe they've gotten better with their contact. So they get closer, a bit, and closer, but can't get closer than 10 feet before they start freaking out. Which sucks cause, by this time, they're seeing themselves as the only friends in a lost world, and want to get it on. They devise a sort of bondage for it, hands tied behind back, etc. After some testing it seems to actually work. He's full of a bloodthirsty rage but he does manage to do her and without harm. Then his hand gets loose and he slaughters her. He mourns, of course, it was to be expected, now he's alone again, etc. But eventually he sees another person skirting his land. Sure enough, it's a girl. And he starts thinking of ways to get into the girls pants. It'll work, next time, he's sure.

Ok, I have some old notebooks of mine where I made up a fuckton of ghosts... let me see if I can find some good ones for you guys...
    Type 025: HATE
Appearance: like a normal person, but the chest cavity, when exposed, is torn open and an enormous beast with mouths for eyes burst out. The main body is just a deception, the inner creature has devoured it from the inside out. Contagious.
    TYPE 030: ADDICTION
Appearance: a gaunt figure, with limbs and body parts replaced with hypodermics and other drug paraphenalia. Hangs around addicts, intensifying addictive tendencies and feeds off the experiences given by the living who use drugs.
    TYPE 037: FORGOTTEN
Appearance: Just fading outlines of a figure. Steals memories of loved ones and friends for its own since it no longer remembers anything about itself, nor does anyone else.
    TYPE 044: GUILT
Appearance: Upper torso, bound in chains with weights for arms and hands. Creates a pervasive sense of heaviness and transfers its feelings to those near it who become overcome with feelings of loss, guilt, and shame and often kill themselves.
    TYPE 050: PROTECTOR
Appearance: Humanoid skeleton with shield like rib cages for forearms and long black clawed hands. Attached to an individual or place, kills anyone who shows the slightest threat to the attached object or person.
    TYPE 052: MIRROR
Appearance: A dark reflective robed figure. Alters form upon contact with people, immediately assuming the form of the persons true self, often distorted shadow personalities.
    TYPE 079: MASTER OF PUPPETS
Appearance: Humanoid, no mouth. Wears puppet rigging all over her body. Manipulates other spirits and people through emotional means, which form anchors on the people, then uses them to her own ends. Sort of like Tzeentch, but more sadistic and less concerned with planning.

OP: have you ever read the Holder series or some of the other copypasta on /x/?
    http://theholders.org/

Fear is based on the power of the group, if the players can blast fireballs from their fingertips and decimate baddies with a snickersnack of their vorpal blades, it is going to be a lot harder to make the players actually feel as if they are endangered. A great solution is something that can't be dispatched as easily as dealing X amount of damage to the target, the environment works great to solve this if done properly. Think Deadspace, the ship was being overrun by some unknown growth, turning people into abominations. Sure, you have all this fancy technology, but you're outnumbered, utterly alone and the ship is failing, giving you a sense of dread despite your superior abilities. Another great theme were the giant tentacles that dragged you to your doom if you didn't destroy them fast enough. Have the party explore a cursed marsh or an old factory, giant tentacles pop out and drag individuals off in different directions. They can be chopped in half, but rather than describing damage according to hit points, describe it as "Your slash only manages to cut a quarter way through the appendage." Make use pf the characters' senses, they hear smell and see things that aren't there, they remember things incorrectly due to hallucinations. Sure, they played through bribing the prison guard, they remember bribing him, but it was a hallucination, they really paid some bum outside a dog kennel. Alter the players' sense of reality and watch the fear and confusion set in.

Something, either a virus or a toxic meme or ghosts or divine vengeance, something gets into your head, and turns off Language.

You go to read the newspaper, and it's all squiggly lines. your wife is making noises at you, she looks upset.

You can't talk to anyone, you can't describe what's happening to you, you can't hear the doctor's rational explanation, you can't call the police or the FBI. You are alone.

And then, you witness something gruesome and horrible that nobody else saw.

Richard Laymon, a horror writer, brings out some evil shit. The trolls. Homeless, cast out and mixed with those sent out from shut down Asylums due to Reagan's closing them down. They're not all insane, not all cruel, not all mean. But they're not a part of any society we know. They're humans by blood only at this point. Life is so unfair for them, they become easily influenced by others, preying on that thought, that things should be fair or whatever. And suddenly you have a nameless, faceless mass of people willing to do whatever they need to survive and make things fair for them.

He also had the Beast. Which was more of a sexual thing. An actual monster, it...it was the bane of men.

And lastly, the psychos. Some might be homeless, some might live next door. They range from brad pitt-good looks to tall, fat guys who walk around naked, with blood splattering their chests and their cock sticking out. Because they're going to RAPE someone with it..

One book led a girl and her friends through great measures, with the hint of a reward at the end. The main character was able to reunite with her family. The family she so desperately tried to put behind her, as her stepfather and stepbrothers raped and abused her before she ran away from home as a young teen. And now she's got her friends, she's popular, she's sexy, but it doesn't matter how much she put it behind her, cause they're RIGHT THERE and they want her back. And they're glad she brought some company. Can get rid of the men, though.

You see, Personally I think that the ghost is the most horrible of all monsters. It is a memory of what once was, and a perversion and distortion of the past. It represents all of our shortcomings as mortals. While being born from us, it is still our opposite, completely foreign. It cannot be killed, for it is already dead, it simply exists to corrupt and distort the future, a remnant of the past which does not belong.

I have two ideas off the top of my head for the appearence of two creatures, without much background, maybe you could flesh them out?

    1. Little girl dressed up in 1940's 50's. dress, ribbons, dolllike etc, except her lower jaw has been torn from her skull with portions of bloody flesh hanging from her cheeks, and her tongue lolling out of her throat.

    2. A very pale, hairless hominid, almost translucent, with it's organs visible, it's heart pulsating against it's ribcage. It's enlarged eyes totally useless in the depths of its lair. on the end of it's short snout is a pair of moth's antennae with which it uses to track down prey and recieve communications from the colony. It's forearms appear to have been split between the radius and the ulna with two appendages ending in two sickle shaped claws.

Kind of like in the grudge, yeah. With my line of thought, the girl would probably have been raped and killed to keep her from telling anyone. Now she preys on anyone who has sex in the area where she haunts, probably a park. She tears off the jaws of men while they're fucking. Super creepy because anyone I say "who is without vision"/doesn't have second sight just sees his jaw randomly being slowly torn off. And he's just so in shock he just keeps fucking the chick while it's happening.

As far as predicting our future fears go, I'd say robots and Ubermensch (not Nietzsche's, but the genetically engineered super-men) are going to make a come back. When these monsters first turned up, it was because the ideas themselves were novel and it looked like they would be possible in the near future. It turned out the technological curve wasn't actually as quick and scary as it was made out to be, so these monsters died off for the most part. However, it's been a few decades since the heyday of these monsters. I for one fully expect that in twenty years I will have a second, bio-mechanical heart beating alongside my real one, pumping fuel to my artificial super-limbs, a single, ultra-efficient lung, all connected by my custom-tailored nerve circuits. I will never fall ill, my immune system will be genetically enhanced. My bones will be laced with carbon nanotubes, they will only break under dozens of tons of pressure. My body will be immortal. My sanity will not. What will we do when we have an aging population of slowly maddening, nigh-indestructible cyborgs?

Bonded/natural weapons signify feral rage and violent tendencies, or a natural proclivity towards violence. The utter divergence from humanoid form would symbolize a complete transformation, i.e. someone who accidentally killed someone, figured out they liked it and kept on killing. This person would seek out solitude to keep from getting caught. In death, they would seek out other like minded spirits, possibly forming colonies that would share in the kill. However, a colony suggests a leader, so possibly a gestalt consciousness similar to the legion type, with a concentrated hivemind will in a centralized body, which would probably be a demon which corrupts humans into these spirits, forming a symbiotic relationship. Kills would probably be brought before the central body and shared in by all in a orgiastic slaughter ritual, in which all parties involved would get to savor the tastes of the kill.

You probably already know that they are living suicide bombs that are either normally invisible or disguised as completely normal humans. They had no goal other then causing terror. They have a huge toothy grin that nearly split their heads i half and laugh constantly.

They laugh because they are truly, honestly happy. Happy they have a purpose in life. To sacrifice themselves to kill at lest one human. They are terrorist taken to the supernatural extreme.

Sounds to me like an inversion of the normal route. Instead of the old fearing the young, the young will fear the old.

Actually forget that last statement. Status quo. The old (a lot more of them, thanks to medical science) will fear the young. They know the young hate them for their lock on the good jobs, money and political power. It will be a revival of the vampire as eternally young somehow, but crossed with a Matlock plot in that it is always the kid that is guilty.

A monster is what people fear most. And what do modern people fear most? Loss. People are greedy, and cannot forgive losing things. But the problem is, material goods can be replaced. What cannot be replaced is the people you know, your friends and family, even simple co-workers and acquaintances.
Imagine, if you will, that one day, you go to hang out with your best friend. He seems confused when you greet him, seeming to not recognize you immediately. He asks you, confusedly, why you are greeting him, as you were just together, having a good time. When you get home later, there's a message on your voice-mail from your girlfriend, commenting on the great day you two had, reminding you that you are meeting for dinner later. You haven't seen her in a couple days, and you call her, finding out what's going on. She doesn't recognize your voice, and hangs up when you claim to be her boyfriend. Concerned, you go to her house, and knock on the door. You hear her speaking inside, and then hear her walk up to the door. The light in the peep-hole is blacked out as she looks through it, and then she leaves the door unanswered. You knock again, frantically, and she finally opens the door. Worried, you ask why she ignores you, and she angrily claims to not know you, and slams the door.
Miserable, you go back home. You can't find your key, but the back door is unlocked, so you enter through there. Your roommate is in the room you enter, and doesn't recognize you. He shouts at you to leave, that he'll call the cops. Suddenly, someone else enters the room. This person finally does recognize you, but all he does is give a sly wink, and then says, in a voice identical to yours, that you need to get out of his house.

The values you have learned are a lie, a cover for a system of brutal alien oppression. It works by isolating you, keeping you afraid, trusting others superficially enough to comply, but absolute trust is impossible, anyone you know might be one of them. nevertheless the only way to fight this menace is through genuine trust. A lonely individual is nothing to them, there are no "heroes", isolated and individual, that's how they want you. What they fear is a genuine society, and so they create a fake society where trust and camaraderie are poison and everyone fears the only people that can save them: each other. And with good reason, you never know when your friend might just be One of Them.

And They can be vampires, or a new form of unorthodox zombies. Maybe they are an aristocracy of beings fitting a loose vampire archetype that turn their most faithful human followers into sentient 'zombies' that pass for human but are "soulless" and unredeemable. Worst still, the process of transformation is not instantaneous, and even your "magic glasses" don't keep you safe. The real enemy is inside your head, you and your friends all have very good reasons to turn on each other and given in to Their power, and a lifetime of Their conditioning to make things harder for you.

Sort of. The thing is, the young will be even BETTER. They won't need the outdated mechanical upgrades of their elders. They will be born perfect, Tolkien's elves. Born smarter, stronger, faster, more efficient than any man before them. They won't need to eat, not in the traditional sense: they'll collect all the nutrients they need through their skin during their brief weekly sleep in a protein bath and a process similar to photosynthesis. They'll be able to beat your robotic prosthetic at arm wrestling, but worse than being stronger than you, they'll be faster. They won't lose any reaction time in the archaic mess of the neural links between your flesh and mechanics. And they'll think faster than you, too, they'll learn faster than you and be able to predict every move you make. You will have prolonged your life artificially, your children simply will not age.

Born smarter, stronger, faster, more efficient than any man before them (that's a list). They won't need to eat, (clause separation, and given the connectivity of the two clauses it calls for a comma, not a semicolon) not in the traditional sense: (GASP A COLON) they'll collect all the nutrients they need through their skin during their brief weekly sleep in a protein bath and a process similar to photosynthesis. They'll be able to beat your robotic prosthetic at arm wrestling, (conjunction/clause) but worse than being stronger than you, (clause separation) they'll be faster. FUCKING MANTS.

Mants are simpily a variety of ant that has learned to co-exist with mankind. Inside of mankind, to be specific.

Unlike other ants, their queen is very small and able to find its way into the human body through multiple means. It could go into your mouth while you are sleeping, in your butt just after you poop, up your nose just after you sneeze. It's very sneaky and has learned to enter the body while it is distracted. Once it is inside it waits until just the right time to start its work.

It may be tiny but it's supernaturally tough and adaptive. So much so that it can absorb oxygen from human blood. If it needs to deficate, it does so by making a tiny hole in the colon and deficating there. A rare few can even manipulate the human brain, slowly making the host less active and perceptive so her work will be not as hard. In short, they manipulate the organ's function rather than just tunnel through it mindlessly.

Something doesn't necessarily have to be clawed or have tome toothy maw to be terrifying. I'd suggest some monsters based of Freudian psychology and surrealist artwork. The mants themselfs are so small it is virtually impossible to tell if you have sore muscles or being dug through by mants. Within time it is possible for others to tell because the host usually begins to limp, lose balance, and may even wake up one day eyes completly gone, as mants tend to eat the host's eyeballs.

If the host is tough enough, millions of mants could be living in their body. But eventually it will be too much and the host's brain will shut off while the body keeps living, kept alive by the queen who had attached herself to the spine of the host.

Bodies infested with mants have shown mutation, such as hardening of the skin, loss of bone structure, shrinking of the arms and hands, which lose their fingers and become a single point and growths on the bodies which become either extra legs or anntene-like appendages on the foreheads.
