Good afternoon. Unfortunately, tonight's thread will be much shorter than originally intended. Tonight I have a wedding to attend; I did not know about this last week, or I would have warned you. Since I will only be around for about an hour, we probably won't get much done.

    Incoming text wall.

The Conclave is willing to accept Erivrus as an attachment to your command, or a bodyguard of sorts, if you decide to terminate the contract and lose your rank. Obviously, there must be restrictions on his movement and his actions, because he is a giant magical siege engine and that kind of thing must be regulated. If an agreement cannot be reached, the Conclave will safeguard Perin's concerns by any means necessary. Since you're reasonable and trustworthy, it won't come to that.

As a significant military asset, Erivrus is subject to a large amount of wartime provisions, which you have no control over. The Conclave has the right to study the engine and his driving forces, as does Intelligence. The exact details have yet to be decided, but your cooperation would be appreciated. In return for this, and your considerable help in dispatching the Forusians and their creations, they are prepared to offer you compensation.

If you have political ambitions, the Conclave has the connections to get you where you want to be. If you desire wealth, land, or physical resources, transfer of those is a simple affair. For information, magical artifacts, or other sensitive materials, you need look no further. As the voices say, you both stand much to gain from an exchange, and a continued relationship.

No problem. If no one sent the archived thread to LL, I'll do it myself.

Aside from that, the world has kept on spinning. Erivrus is still undergoing repairs and will have your armor ready by the end of the day. The army detachments will be sweeping the area for signs of further Forusian incursion. Some of the Magma Steel and gems harvested from the demon cavalry have been given to you, as your rightful share. Siskiv and Kel await plans for a rendezvous, and Bem has been turning a handsome profit in New Aarmour.

The Forusian capital is breaking under siege, and its inhabitants are arming themselves with whatever they can find. The end will be bloody, but the enemy will eventually be subdued, and with the fall of the capital, official control of the nation will pass to Perin. A great amount of resistance is anticipated, and, though victory is all but certain, it will take a long time to unify the large country under Perin's rule.

That land is seen by the government as effectively worthless. Getting the town's expanded borders recognized would be easy, as would changing the local laws. For it to be truly autonomous, though, it would need a noble to head it.

    Thank you.

Erivrus sees it as the logical consequence of being huge and powerful. He was expecting something like that once he was discovered.

Ownership of Dreamwood, and the right to extend that domain to unclaimed territory within Dreamwood's reach.

They'll probably think that this is to claim Frost Giant and such northern territory around Dreamwood, once we get the demon problem under control. Let them think that. Gentlemen, once we get rocketry down, I aim to conquer the Moon. To plant my flag upon it, to take it as my own, and to make it the seat of my empire of the stars. The first of many such astral jewels to line my crown. To have Erivrus the Living Factory modified to act as both colony ship and terraforming agent, the most powerful magical environment-modification tool ever, to claim the heavens themselves with the power of magic and the insights of science, to establish this as our own power base through the exploitation of a contractural loophole. That is my proposal.

By dawn the next day, you have your armor and your personal effects, and you have secured the aid of the Conclave in petitioning for title. Depending on how things go, Dreamwood could end up a lot bigger, or a lot bigger, autonomous, and led by you. The contract is not officially terminated, for the time being, so you remain a Captain, if only temporarily. Once the gods have everything sorted out, you vanish in a flash of greenish-blue, appearing just outside Perin's capital.

Kel embraces you and tells you how much he's missed you. Siskiv glares at you for awhile, and chastises you for leaving him behind, before admitting that you handled everything quite well yourself. His face and hands are scarred, but he is fully healed. Bem is wearing robes fit for a king, and is escorted by two personal guards in addition to the sergeant's squad. He is followed by a troupe of somber-looking men with horns, who he hired to announce your presence. The old man boasts that he could buy you the whole country if you let him.

The walk to the manor is an... interesting one. You are met and escorted by a group of royal guard, paraded through main street like some sort of hero. From the cheers you get, it's obvious that word of your exploits has reached far and wide, though the more finely-dressed citizens seem disdainful. As you carefully climb the oversized steps to the manor hall, you think about how far you've come, and how far you have left to go.

The Conclave's influence has brought everything together. You arrive right on time, request an audience with the Lord, and receive it immediately, being waved forward into the massive, high-ceilinged main room by a heavyset man in ornate armor. The Lord sits on the throne before you, looking weary more than anything else, and waits respectfully as you are announced by Bem and the band. The nobles standing around the throne look mostly bored.

'Thus do we receive Captain Maya Terrasdottir, giant of the North,' says the man just to the Lord's right, 'Speak at your leisure.'

The Lord doesn't seem all too enthusiastic, but he does have a war to win. Several times during Bem's grandiose speech, after you've introduced yourself and bowed, the man next to the Lord whispers something in his ear, and returns to stoic observation. He reminds you of Oberstein.

The nobles look like they don't think much of you, but they wait patiently as Bem extols your virtues and appeals to Lord Olan's profit motive. After all, your contributions so far have been great, and Perin stands to gain much, much more from your work. Your lifespan is over two centuries, besides.

In the end, the Lord is only somewhat impressed. He offers you the position of Count, which is two ranks up from the end of the scale, sixth of eight. Not the greatest, but more than you would have expected before getting into this whole mess. Bem, with all the money he's made, has more than enough for the token tribute.

Siege engines are not quite WMDs, at least not on the level that would allow you to extort the Lord of the whole kingdom.

Yes. Dreamwood and all associated territory will be fully under your control, though you will still be bound by some laws. Taxes and conscription rates will both be reduced.

Ask Bem if he thinks we could get better deal in such a way that it is not offending.

Right now, no. If Bem's reading him right, the Lord is not in the mood to put up with any haggling. Once the war is more or less done, you might be able to renegotiate.

    >>10118747
Accepted, then. You are now a Count.

    >>10118762
Depends on how many and what they're armed with.

I apologize if I've caused you any trouble, but I have to go now. Everything will resume on Sunday.
