107 KB Pokemon Tabletop Adventures In the Wild West The Kamen Writer !B6wEdXIFIE 05/29/10(Sat)00:34 No.10126104
Hey, /tg/. I'm bored and do not see a Pokemon Tabletop Adventures thread on here so HEY LETS HAVE ONE.

    All the pertinent facts:
    http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Pokemon_Tabletop_Adventures

I've been thinking about applying the pokemon template over other settings (As I have been doing ever since this stupid game got announced) And I've settled on the Wild West.

Here's pretty much what I have so far:

    ---

The universe is pretty much the iconic vision of the Wild West. Dusty settler towns, Cowboys fighting injuns, Duels at high noon. The difference is, of course, that the coyotes breathe fire and the birds can lobotomize you with a stare.

The settlers in this wild pokemon world aren't the pretty, optimistic children of the games. These are men and women made hard by a world out to impede their successful settling of the west. They drink, fight, gamble, and mete out western justice where it is needed, man and Pokemon alike.
    >> The Kamen Writer !B6wEdXIFIE 05/29/10(Sat)00:35 No.10126116
The main difference is the tech level, anything too high-tech has pretty much been stricken from the setting. Pokemon centers have been replaced by regular ole' doctors. There is no convenient storage PC. Any pokemon you catch you keep, and you have to feed them and take care of them and make sure they don't kill each other and make sure they're happy enough not to kill you. Obviously, the more pokemon you have, the harder this will be.

This is made even more pertinent by the fact that there are no pokeballs.

    Thats right: No pokeballs.

All captures in this setting require only two things: Rope and luck. When you are fighting a wild pokemon and you want to capture it, you make a capture roll as per the PTA system, but rather than have this roll represent throwing a pokeball, it now represents your character jumping into the fray and hogtying the fucker until he listens to you.
Capture specialists (Specifically the ones focusing on pokeballs) will, of course, need some refluffing and crunching because of this. I'm thinking that the "Pokeball designer" will be replaced by something that can use various bough or found materials to emulate the effects of the pokeballs he can design and apply them to his hogtie roll.
However, Apricorns, and therefore the balls made from them, still exist, as they still grow of trees.

Also, those crazy science men have invented some strange grey thing with a screw-on top they say should work the same as one of those Apricorn-made balls. Don't that just beat all?

    Character classes:

Ace Trainer: Pretty straightforward. Aces focus on being the very best at dueling pokemon. Think life-or-death duels at high noon in the town square, holding your hands level with your belt, knowing that the slightest twitch will send your friend the Cacturne screaming towards the other trainer's face, and that his Ariados will be screaming towards yours similarly.

Ranger: In Texas they have a saying, "One riot, one Ranger." These lonesome lawmen are trained to be able to use pokemon to stop the almost daily disasters that plagued the old pokewest, due to the presence of the violent creatures. They have the unique ability to befriend wild pokemon using only their lasso and the force of their personality.

Breeder: Pretty straightforward. Trainers who breed pokemon. Might have their aims set on setting up a ranch, or to just breed the best pokemon for fighting.
    >> The Kamen Writer !B6wEdXIFIE 05/29/10(Sat)00:36 No.10126144
    >>10126130
Capture Specialist: Once again, pretty straightforward. These trainers have improved their skill with the rope in such a way that it becomes easier to hogtie and knock some sense into any pokemon they come across. Some can even coat their ropes in certain stuff to give them an edge over certain pokemon.

Coordinator: Not everyone in the wild west is hard and rugged. The Coordinators are such people. Dance hall girls, stage magicians, Vaudeville performers who use pokemon as their main props and partners. They lighten up the drab lives by travelling from town to town, accruing praise and accolades (and money) wherever they go.

Martial Artists: These are brawlers. They don't care much for fighting with pokemon, unless its them doing the fighting themselves. These are the lugs who would just as soon start a barroom brawl as order a drink.

Psychics: From out in the prarie, sometimes you'll encounter one of these strange fellows. Usually of Injun ancestry, but not always, some kind of mysticism allows them strange unnatural powers which make most of the white folk living out there uneasy.

Some Pokemon would have to be uncatchable outside of special cases. Slugma? Damned thing burns through the rope as soon as it touches, but if you can catch it in a trap and make it see a profitable relationship, let it out.
Having pokemon REPLACE animals in the wild west really limits things. You can no longer have a mount, unless you caught it. The solution would be to integrate the pokemon into the natural world somehow. Have the pokemon be some natural occurrence, but extraordinary event.

This could work, but I've one question. What kind of storyline would work for this? The standard gym battlan/team stopping/collecting doesn't seem to lend itself to this very well. Speaking of collecting, are there pokedexes or an equavalent?

Naw, bra. There's a pokeman for every real world animal, pretty much. Maybe make Ponytas Eevee ish though, so people can have more variety in their "hosses"

    I'm glad you think so.

Also, I forgot Gyms, or at least the equivalent. Each town will have its best fighter. Challenging these strong guns is the most surefire way to gain fame and fortune (and Trainer levels), but more often than not these duels can turn deadly. There is no pokemon league yet to moderate battles after all, so unless both participants are gentlemen (A rare commodity in these tough times) its entirely possible they'll go straight for the throat.

Gyms could be applied as the Sheriff of a town, or outlaw if the town is on the rowdy side. You might even choose a side and fight to wipe out the law abiding citizens or help wrangle the damned fugitives into a ball and chain.
Beating the "Leader" in a fight might prove you could help their fight, and the "Badge" would show your position of authority over either henchmen or citizens. You could even have the Injuns have their own society were you could gain favor. Have a form of respect built into challenging a great warrior to a battle.

Think about the pokemon storyline for a moment. A lone stranger drifts from town to town, challenging the strongest gun in each settlement for fame and fortune, and being challenged by young up-and-comers trying to make a name for themselves. When a town is in trouble the stranger comes, and drives out all the troublemakers.

Pokemon is already pretty much a western. You just need to reflavor and refluff and you're golden.

Indian society would live in harmony with pokemon. They request aid from the pokemon, and the pokemon acquiesce.

Paleface society enslaves them. Fire-mon power train boilers, water-types are forced to water crops several times a day, ect.

Yeah, pretty much a field journal. Its easy enough to keep track of how many pokemon you have or have had, and you can assign one guy to keep track of how many seen (Or just keep track of it yourself.)

In any case, the pokedex isn't really that important except to some classes that mod the shit out of it (Namely engineer) which would be based around crazy steam-powered tinker nonsense.

The problem is, there is no way to enslave a creature that can create a primal force of nature at will. The whites would have to appease the pokemon they work with, or they wouldn't get help at all. Adventurers that have pokemon of a certain type that trust them would be able to work as a job that required pokemon to improve productivity.
How would guns fit into the setting though, would they have come about differently due to the large number of creatures that could BEND REALITY TO THEIR WILL? Would a gunslinger be able to head out into the tall shrubs of the wild and make it to the next town without several Tauros stampeding after him?

    Totadile rocked.

Anyways, no need to rename the pokemon. Instead their appearances change, Houndour would be a coyote, Pikachu would be a Kangaroo Mouse?

Then there's your mounts, each person might mount some different pokemon. While the most popular are Ponytas & Rapidashes, there's going to be Doduo & Dotrio. Hell, I might ride on my Torterra underneath the shade as he goes through the dusty plains, and scorching deserts.

Professors would be the general term for any body of importance and know how in pokemon. Be he the Sheriff, or the Towns Doctor. Not always, but sometimes a school teacher dressed in a white coat.

Starter Pokemon are already tamed, when you get them they'll be in an egg that's about to hatch. So all you have to do is rub on it, and the pokemon will bond with you as it's parent. As for pokeballs, they should be real primitive and very expensive. Just came on the scene along with trains, how they work? No one is for sure, and those who do make them, well just to say they can't give you an reasonable answer. Also downgrade all your money, where you'd normally get $100, or 3k (Yen), you'd get around $10, or 300 (Yen). Your pistol should cost you around $5, and a Rifle around $15. Ammo (by the 100) for both types would cost around $1 to $5.

I'm thinking they learned to make friends with pokemon from the Indians instead of tying them down and forcing them to obey. The "Styler" could just be represented by a reusable loose lasso he uses to single the pokemon out to force it to look into his eyes, as opposed to the three feet of rope required to hogtie that same pokemon.

Then don't say Indians. They befriend the pokemon with a lasso and sheer force of personality. The pokemon, seeing that the ranger is the alpha male in the relationship, agrees to help for a while.

I don't want to tie it down too much into too much gadgetry. I know pokemon is known for the sheer amount of gadgets that have been introduced, but I want to get across the same basic premise with a much more analogue approach. A special rope that only rangers use seems like a stretch to me.

Balls were crafted, an art rather than a science. A Wild West Pokemon campaign would be using those instead of mechanical stuff.

Although more frequently you'd just use a lasso and your wits. Also, I think that every starting Pokemon has to be one you can ride in some fashion. You don't just go hiking through the west, you need a mount of some kind.

Ponyta are like your horse, instead of having them as a pokemon for battling you just use it for a mount. I say everyone gets a Ponyta (assuming they pay for one) and their own pokemon. Instead of having 6, I would limit it to 3. It's a smaller party yes, however they're not all in a pokeball so it's going to be harder to have. 6 is damn near impossible.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/10(Sat)10:16 No.10134098
Hmm, I'm starting to like the no-pokeball mod. You've gotta have your trained creatures beat the wild into near submission so you can use your lasso and wrangling skills to break it exert control.

None of this "Lol its in pokeball its loyal to you" you've gotta find some way to get into the head of this creature you're the master at physical risk to yourself.

This process might be extremely complicated and dangerous depending upon the elemental power of the pokemon.

See, if there were ancient poke`mon, there had to be ancient poke`balls, right?

Right. Therefore, a few games had various nuts and fruits which, when altered by a wise old man somewhere, allowed you to have low-tech poke`balls. Some of these were better at catching poke`mon than other balls.

I'm planning on having Apricorns (As I said in the second post, BTW), but they'll probably be extremely rare, and they'll only do you any good if you can find an Apricorn Smith, or if the party's capture specialist rolls one, which, since it's probably going to be fluffed to be mystical in origin, will need some sort of justification to take, even if that justification is "I learned it from a medicine man from the far east."

Honestly, I just like the idea of wrassling pokemon to the ground and catching them by force. And I like the idea of changing up the capture rules for certain types. Also, instead of throwing money at pokeballs, you'll be throwing all your money at lengths and lengths of rope, which will cost about the same as a normal pokeball.

    >>10134565

Its no different than in Vanilla PTA. Your pokemon are still your combination lifebar/Weapons, I'm only re flavoring the method of capture to be SUPER MANLY.

And now some writefaggotry to keep the thread alive.

The Tauros were restless. It wasn't a particularly cold or stormy night, but their lowing held a distinct note of fear. It echoed over the land, and their owner took particular note. B. Sienna didn't get to be the premier breeder in three counties by ignoring what his pokemon told him. He knew that they smelled something he couldn't see. An Arbok? Not this late. Things weren't a threat unless they'd sunned themselves. Rustlers? He was famous, and fame always brought with it complications. A howl too close for comfort resolved his question: Houndoom.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/10(Sat)17:49 No.10140716
    >>10140501
So named for being the doom of any man or pokemon that traveled at night ill-prepared, Houndoom were a constant scourge to ranchers. They were bold, vicious creatures, strong enough to take nearly any 'mon, especially if they had a pack advantage. Worse, unlike some of the night-time stalkers, they didn't fear fire or trainers. Sienna knew that if he was up against a pack of the critters, he was probably going to lose some good stock. He hoped it was a loner, and the lack of returning howls made things hopeful.

The Howl had woke his Rapidash, which whinnied fearfully. "There, there, girl, we'll be fine." Sienna comforted the pokemon. Nothing to do now but saddle up, and ride around the herd. If he saw the beast, he'd try and run it off. He had high hopes, knowing that all his pokemon were purebred, with pedigrees unmatchable for at least fifty mile. He'd shown off Rapidash at a convention in White River City, and come back with a blue ribbon. Still, the houndoom was probably going to get the element of surprise.

He was just about back to his camp, no sign of the beast, when it struck.
He had only a split second glimpse of the light from Rapidash's mane glinting from eyes low to the ground sweeping in. Luckily, his Rapidash was quicker than him, dodging the critter's biting fangs. He once again thanked the lucky stars for his mount's nimble agility. Houndoom was not to be denied though, and lunged for Rapidash's face. As it reared, Houndoom suddenly dropped down, and beat at the now exposed hind leg. A feint! The beast was deviously cunning, but left itself exposed for Rapidash to stomp it into the ground. The beast seemed amused, and, with a coughing bark almost like a laugh, released a hellish cloud of gas into Rapidash and Sienna's faces. Sienna jumped from his mount, which kicked and bucked in confusion. When the cloud was gone, Sienna could see Rapidash breathing heavily, a glassiness to her eye. No doubt the hellish smog had poisoned her. His only hope was that a series of quick attacks and stomps could drive off the Houndoom. But with each attack, Rapidash grew weaker, and the fight was resolved when Houndoom took advantage of a critical moment of distraction on Rapidash's part, and bit down hard on the back leg, causing the fire horse to fall to its side, unable to rise.

The Houndoom looked at Sienna, its panting mouth seeming to laugh at him. It looked at the unconscious Rapidash, then at Sienna, and finally at his herd of Tauros. The Tauros had backed away from the battle, lowing in terror, and were now watching with fear in their eyes.

The Houndoom apparently decided that the Tauros would be a better meal than the horse, and began to saunter toward the herd, its arrogant manner daring Sienna to try something. And while he'd heard of cow-punchers hard enough to lay a Kanghaskan out, he was just a pokebreeder. He had nothing he could do against this beast.
Which, in this rough and tumble world, did not mean that he or the herd were defenseless. His prime breeding Tauros pushed its way from the herd, and fixed its eyes on the Houndoom.

The Houndoom eyed up this new challenger, bared its teeth, and lept forward. To get a gut full of Tauros horn. Tauros was faster than the beast expected, and further, had a head that could smash rocks. The unexpected blow slammed the Houndoom from the air. It stood, now wheezing heavily, sounding almost like it was whining with every breath. It feinted to Taruos's right, and managed to get a good blow on his left flank when he exposed it. Tauros raged at the blow, and began to pummel the Houndoom with hoof and horn. The Houndoom fought back as hard as it could, managing to get some powerful bites, but each one only drove Tauros to greater fury and power. Finally, the Houndoom lay, pummeled and beaten, panting on its side in the ground. Sienna looked down at the pokemon, which met his eye, and whined, one long, sad whine.

"Alright, you big lug." Sienna patted it on the brow, to which the Tauros huffed happily. It then looked at the Houndoom on the ground, and nudged it with its snout. It looked from the Houndoom to Sienna.
"What? Are you crazy?! That thing attacked us!"
Tauros huffed in a much lower note, and then ambled back to the herd.
"Stupid, bull-headed...ALRIGHT." And with that announcement, Sienna knelt, pulled a tonic from his pocket, and spread it on the Houndoom's wounds.
The Houndoom pulled itself to its feet, and looked Sienna in the eye.
"Listen. You stick with me, you get regular food, you rough up anything that tries to mess with me or mine, and you get a warm place to sleep. You mess up, I throw you in a canyon. Understand?"

The IRC has suggested the use of hallucinogens to teach pokemon new moves. They go on a spirit journey, trip balls for a few, then come back and suddenly they know Surf.

I kinda like it but I'm still open to suggestions.

Specifically, each "TM" would be a different herbal mix with the dose of Peyote, so the stuff gets used up after one use, and each dose gives a different move after the spirit journey.

I like the feel of that.

Though it doesn't make sense for HMs. Maybe those are the Holy Magics? You go speak with the medicine man, and he uses a recipe he knows and teaches you how to give your pokemon that specific journey?

Makes sense. (Quick note: In PTA ANY move can be made into an HM using the HM smith feat under... Pusher I think) So you take the recipe of the TM, and are able to reuse the effect of the mixture without needing the mixture through, like, meditation and stuff.

Yes. As far as suggested settings will go - there will be very few HMs in the pokemon world. The video game HMs have all been demoted to TMs 93-100. Also, nearly any Move could be found as a TM if you need it to in your game.

Then there's the attack appeal part.

    Erm.
    Contests.
Appeal round is in the archives.
Initial 'come on out _____' round is based on how much you RP you pokemon's appearance.
Do you make comments that your pokemon wears a scarf or a pair of shade often? The GM should give you a bonus for that.
Did you say as your party went to sleep for the night that you spent some time brushing your pokemon's hair? You should get something for that too.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/10(Sat)19:57 No.10142977
From the archive which are working.

Thanks for the heads up Axiom, how the Styler works is below. About your starting packages idea: I think it's cool, I like it. What I let my players start off with was a backpack and whatever they brought in it with them from home (within reason). I keep a very close eye on player inventory in game. I don't want poke marts in my players' backpacks.

Range Stylers have 10 Energy in them. Any Ranger can recharge that for free at Centers, Marts, Police/Ranger departments. When a Ranger makes a Restraint roll, they roll 1d100 and must roll under the pokemon's Capture Rate. When making a restraint roll, the target's capture rate is raised 25, because unless you're making that pokemon a Companion they'll only be with you for a short while anyway.

The 1d100 roll is used for nearly every roll in this game that involves adding a pokemon to your team except for the Psychic's mind control feature (Capture rolls, Restraint Rolls, Egg Rolls, Possession Rolls). So if you plan to make other ways of converting pokemon in this game, try to use the d100 roll to make it similar to the other rolls.

hopefully they will take this as an opportunity to bring forth a character rich in depth and development with complex and interesting relationships with other characters and realize that good writing and plots go along way, perhaps taking back fans from years before who've grown up now, through nostalgia and well written story arcs, dialogue, ect.
    somehow, I doubt it.

I just got a crazy idea for an NPC: He's some farmboy from back east but don't get him wrong. Some crazy mystic touched him in the head when he was a runt and since then it's been trees, trees, trees for him. But it ain't any sort of tree. It gotta be an Apricorn, and he came riding out West to find seeds of them and plant them across the plains. He'll whittle a fresh fruit if you help him out of a jam, but it's sure hard to find him, especially in the vast plains and him all alone.

He says that he's looking for some girl, some Cera B. or something, and they'll make a whole forest together, but I don't know. That Johnny Apricornseed is fooling with some crazy shit.

    STAB is added per target.
Not per attack from the scatter.
Attacking one target 5 times gets one STAB.
Attacking 5 targets one time each gets 5 STAB dice, once per target.
Remember, if you hit 5 times, your target add their defense 5 times. Stab is added to the first hit per target during scatter.
    Hope that clears things up.

Would it be more reasonable to change it rolling those extra dice once and dividing it by the number of max hits for the attack?

So Bonemerang (2hit) would roll it's STAB, etc. and then divide by two, adding that result to each hit. It does get a chance to crit on each of the separate hits, right?
