Of course, if I get the chance to, I'm fine with talking about MH here.

Controls are fuckwin, unless you're used to LOCK ON EASYMODE in games.

Also, still working on FantasyCraft variation for my own amusement - as I've done writeups for slashaxe and gunlance, and given that the 'long sword'/katana style of weapon usage lends itself rather well to its own feat chain (and not a superior weapon in and of itself - no Masterwork Broadsword Copypasta, please), I'm taking the approach of making the actual Monster Hunter class as a setting-specific expert class of 10 levels, mostly focused on gaining extra feats and specifically having a workaround of the normal Essence and Charms rules as the class's 'schtick'. Monster Hunter equipment works as the base 'type' in the possession of anyone else, but for one who is trained in the profession they can utilize all of its respective qualities. Also, the 1 potion a day rule goes right out the window, given that they DO make use of them a bit more frequently. The other part that was looking to be neessary, to keep the 'feel' of the setting, is to give an allowance of increased 'trophy' retention, as such things are used as future components for gear. The main cause for concern and conflict, aside from fighting the respective monsters, is the disutes between the towns and cities, as well as the distinct branches of the Guild (Kokoto region, Jumbo region, and Loc Lac regions respectively).

You want to drop a bunch. Any skill that gives a straight effect, have them gain 2 at first level and say 1 every other level. Give them some kind of active combat ability every level they don't gain a skill. Scrap stats down to physical ones, like 'Strength' 'Vitality' 'Agility' and then maybe something like 'Willpower' and 'Guile'.

If I were you, I'd just go with the Tri ones, it's probably easier.

That has all of them, and the points needed to activate each one.

Alternately high dex if going with finesse weapons.

But, to continue with earlier brainstorming...

Sure, people might think of the basic happenstances as repetitive, but I'd submit they're no more so than any other genre's setting; 40K being a prime example. That's not a bash, it's simply illustration of the point.

That being said, a large portion of the Monster Hunter universe seems to thrive on being 'subsistence hunter/gathering'. While there's certainly lesser sources of food available, and some measure of farming can be done, along with fishing, the predominant bounty of the world is reaped from the hunt. Certainly, beginners might cut their teeth on chasing down kelbi and carving their horns off, or taking down aponaths for meat, or even helping keep the bullfango population down so the lumberers can actually do their job without ending up with big assed pig tusks up their keisters, the fact remains that there's big, dangerous predators out there that tend to put everything else on the sidelines. Certainly, there's a plethora of small towns where there's a hunter, MAYBE two, to help with the thinning of the population of these big beasties, but many of them DO continue to grow from weaker specimen if nothing keeps them in check - 'prey become 'dromes, jaggi become Great, and eventually the female ludroth will draw the affections and attentions of a Royal.

In many ways, the lower to middle ranges of being a professional Monster Hunter constitute being over-glorified Pest Control. Where the Monster Hunter stands out from others who would kill said beasts is their utilization of gear crafted from the very things they kill and carve, utilizing the very qualities the creatures themselves possess, albeit on a far lesser scale. Eventually, however, the urge will arise to face even greater challenges, not to mention get far better pay; that's when the aspirants would want to journey to the cities, those hubs of Guild activity, in order to take on the far stronger opposition.

In addition, yes, there's basic gathering quests at all levels, including the dreaded Large Parcel Delivery missions. Having to deal with a rather displeased Rathian chasing after you because you're carrying one of its precious eggs is bad enough; having its mate show up to assist is far, far worse, and most certainly cause to want the aid of other hunters.

Additionally, with the changes of the season, many behaviors change; the herbivores may become more plentiful, resulting in a swarm of carnivorous wyverns picking off the multitudes of offspring.

And given that much of the medicine and technology seems to be tied to alchemy, this means there's potential for quests that most certainly would not end up in a normal game on the console - a parfumier in the City wants to experiment with the musks of different wyverns for their latest fragrance. Who do you think they're going to hire to gather the necessary substances?

The Expert Class of Monster Slayer is more 'D&D Ranger with Specific Enemies Bonus' class, to my eyes, though it would also be great as a specific style of hunter, more based on surviving by their own merit than the equipment they've gathered and grown with. Would make sense to have both variants be available - the gear-dependent versus the self-reliant.

    You are a gigantic tool.

The premise seems off, I will admit, but once you fight your first large monster, the viewpoint changes entirely.

It stops being "Aww man, need to kill 3 more Rathians to get that new platemail" and becomes "I only get to kill 3 more Rathians before I don't have any more reason to kill them? God damnit."

Fighting in monster hunter is one of the most fluid combat systems of any game I've ever played, and is genuinely enjoyable to the point where grinding stops being grinding and becomes fun.

    >>10139139 continued

The main thing about any of the Shot Add skills is, simply put, it lets you add access to a shot type for a bowgun that does not support the type of shot, normally. As I've not yet gotten around to the Bow Gun conversions, I'd figure that would carry over as-is.

Wide Area I would handle as a form of Damage Aura, but repurposed so that, depending on the extent to which the skill is unlocked/accessed, the effects of a consumed potion are shared with those in proximity by 50% or 100%.

I'm not sadistic enough to address the theft issues one gets with Melynxes, Gypceros, or Chameleos, but essentially I'd treat it as an NPC Quality/Theft Negation. It's on, or you don't have it.

Seeing as how FantasyCraft has a food system, for both bonuses and general survival, I'd make grades of the Hunger skill reduce the number of meals needed, as opposed to increasing the gear bonus of the different food and drink types

Also, while I'm blathering on, I may as well repost.

    SLASHAXE

Requires Edged Forte and either Axe Basics or Greatsword basics.

The SlashAxe is the bastard offspring of a zweihander, a cavalry axe, and a deranged alchemy kit. While not the most practical of inventions, its functionality makes for a surprisingly utilitarian piece of equipment. Switching between forms is a full action.

    SlashAxe 2d6/1d10 19-20/20 massive/AP2 M2h Hard3 12M 30lb Other 300s

    GUNLANCE

Requires Edged Forte and Alchemy Basics.

Happy marriage of spear and black powder, or noisy unholy contraption? In the right hands, this invention is both, though neither description is entirely accurate. In spite of its name, the weapon functions more as a blend of bayonet and blunderbuss, with perhaps a hint of primitive flamethrower legacy. Invariably, will be sold with a shield to match the weapon's aesthetics and motif.

Goddamn but that is awesome, and I hadn't even gotten around to that bit of horror yet...

    Meanwhiles!

    SlashAxe Basics:
It slices! It dices! It hacks! It slashes!
Benefit: In Axe form, you inflict an additional 50% damage for every 5 points by which you beat your opponent's defense check, not subject to exploding dice. Also, you gain a trick.
Discharge! - You may spend up to to your total Axe and Greatsword feat sum in Edge (Maximum 5) to add damage equal to the size of your action dice. The dice can explode. You may do this a maximum number of times per combat equal to your maximum action dice.

    SlashAxe Mastery:
Variety is the slicer of your enemies' lives.
    Prerequisite: SlashAxe Basics
Benefit: Switching from Axe to Sword mode (and vice versa) is a half action. Additionally, the AP quality carries over to both forms.

    SlashAxe Supremacy
...and you'll be guaranteed to blow them away.
    Prerequisite: SlashAxe Mastery
Benefit: You may perform all Axe and Greatsword tricks with a SlashAxe. Switching between forms becomes a free action if partnered with an attack. Damage from Discharge increases by one die size.

(BTW, earlier stack block indicates numbers before the slash as sword form, after slash as axe form)

Axe tricks (Punish the Defiant, Sundering Chop, Cleave in Twain) mainly. Also, I could drop it down to half action, but the damned thing seems REALLY fucking slow when you swap from one form to the other and back again if you aren't doing so as part of an attack combo.

    GunLance Basics
I am tank, feel my barrel.
Benefit: Your threat doubles against creatures twice your size. You also gain a trick.
Wyvern Fire - on a successful hit, you may spend one Edge to inflict an additional 50% of your damage as fire damage. This may only be done 3 times per combat.

    GunLance Mastery
    THIS...is my BOOMSTICK!!!
    Prerequisite: GunLance Basics
Benefit: You gain the ability to reload in combat - spending all current accumulated Edge restores your usage of Wyvern Fire. Additionally, your Wyvern Fire ability is upgraded to six 'shots' before reloading is required. You may do this as many times as you have current action dice. Additionally, your effective reach is treated as +1.

    GunLance Supremacy
I am a siege engine of one.
    Prerequisite: GunLance Mastery
Benefit: You are treated as having both Spear and Shield Mastery while using a GunLance and the shield made to accompany it. You also gain a trick.
Dragon Fire - Your error and threat increase by 3, and you make an attack at your weapon damage times 5 as a full round action, dropping your initiative to last for this attack. The damage dice can explode. If you miss, you are sprawled.

Generalities apply to basic weapon form. Bone weapons at first are considered crude by default, while metal is not crude at initial creation. Using the existing weapon charts from the game, the upgrades are modification/repairs to bring it to an improved state. Bone weapons first lose crude, then gain depending on the weapon in question, for such results as gaining Exotic Bonus Damage, AP, Lure, and so on. Metal would upgrade as bone, skipping the initial Crude quality state.

Shaprness would be a key feature in a Monster Hunter style D&D game.

Bone weapons have a +2 to attack because they way half as much, however they lose sharpness twice as fast.

Iron weapons lose sharpness at the standard rate and have -1 crit.

Stone weapons have +1 damage but lose their sharpness at twice the normal rate.

I was adapting it for FantasyCraft, as the crafting system for gear and such struck me as being a good fit for a game of 'upgrade gear/become more badass'.

I started because someone was making stuff from MH for 4E, and I was originally trolling, but got really into it, as I love the MH franchise.

If anyone else is good at building monsters, I'd most need help converting THEM to FantasyCraft and getting the math right. In-game fluff I can definitely do well, and I'm still waiting for opinions on if I should do a Long Sword feat chain, reflecting different fighting style (and as, technically, if you go back to MH1, many Long Swords were originally Great Swords that split in MH2 the way Dual Swords had split from Sword'n'Shield in MH1), or if doing up a Hunting Horn would be sillier than setting up a feat chain for them, to actually reflect someone having the musical aptitude to use them in combat for morale boosts and such. It would be a great FUCK YEAR MORALE BOOSTS THAT AREN'T PER SE MAGIC.

Tri is my first time playing the series. Already running a monster hunter ish type game in dnd.

The setting is basically our typical fantasy world but geared thousands of years back when everybody is still living in caves and hunting mammoths.

The two players were exiled from their tribe. One is the shaman's apprentice (no actual magic in the game, she just does rituals and has herb and animal lore) and the other is a hunter who acts as a body guard. They have to survive in the world with monsters and cavemen orcs and elves.

It's going pretty good, already taking to resource gathering.

I like this idea and am shamelessly stealing it.

    Long Blade Basics
    Weapon and wielder matter equally
When fighting with the appropriate weapon type, you gain one edge per successful attack, plus one bonus edge for every five points of damage, to a maximum of 3 edge in a single attack. You also gain a stance.
Spirit Blade: Your threat increases by two, but you may not block or parry.

    Long Sword Mastery
As one is tempered, the other becomes sharper.
When at maximum edge, your attacks gains AP2 for up to five rounds. You also gain a trick.
Flashing Blade Dance - Spending 3 edge allows you to make an instant additional attack that can gain edge as per Long Sword Basics. You may do this a number of times per combat equal to your melee combat feats.

    Long Sword Mastery
Once perfected, anything can be cut
You can now use your Flashing Blade Dance without limit, so long as you have the edge to pay for it. You also gain a trick
Spirit Emptying Strike - if you land 3 Flashing Blade Dance attacks successively, you may make a single attack against the anything in front of you or in either square horizontally adjacent to your target. On completion, your weapon is unready, and on a miss you are flat-footed.

You only get to keep so much of said carcass - the rest goes to the quest requester, who in turn pays you cashmoney for the mission once they have the corpse/objects as proof. Even when free-hunting monsters, most of the corpse goes to the town that hosts you for resources and development, or to the guild in exchange for Rank Points and advancement.

That being said, you get the carves of first choice because, let's face it, you did the work, you damned well better get some goodies out of the deal.

The FantasyCraft Trophy system handles that part perfectly - you roll for X amount of trophies, and determine based on results what was not too fucked up to keep, resulting in what you carved.

Side note - GIANT ENEMY CRAB!

    PS2, PS3, PSP, and a Wii.

Monster Hunter from Day 1, game 1.
Which also, in part, ties into my 'human races feats' idea.

Kokoto humans can start off with Great Sword, Sword, Shield, Lance, Hammer, and Light/Heavy Bowgun Proficiencies, as well as learning dual wielding early on. They may not start with anything else, weaponwise. They get Toughness free, and I haven't thought of the rest. They can purchase any level of Basics/Mastery/Supremacy at first level in the available weapons.

Jumbo humans can start with Sword, Shield, Lance, Greatsword, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Gunlance, Light/Heavy Bowgun, and Bow proficiencies. They don't get any bonus proficiencies, due to having all the weapons to choose from.

Loc Lac and Moba Moba humans start with access to Sword, Shield, Lance, Hammer, Bowgun, SlashAxe, and Long Sword proficiencies, and can buy up to Mastery in any but the last two at first level.

I agree, but don't, at the same time.

You get better by skill training and learning how to do wht you do better, which on a gameplay level is easy enough to show through the sheer act of not sucking after a while, but in an abstracted sense it would be your character becoming ore proficient at one's combat and gear usage; thus why I was wanting to do up a Monster Hunter expert class to counterbalance/compliment the Monster Slayer class already published.

Agreed, but then, I do understand their complaint/point. To me, that simply comes down to not increasing stat, since by all accounts your attributes don't increase increase in Monster Hunter - your gear, however, does, and to my eye that would carry over in the form of skills since, let's face it, a bit part of one's ability increase is on a tactical level.

Speaking as a purist, I can understand the sentiment regarding such a thing - however, consider the following.

In offline mode, there are quests divided by stars; effectively, the level of challenge one is prepared to face. Extrapolating, it's a measure of the player's ability, as in effect the player IS the character. Your skill increased, at said game, not the character. By proxy, the character leveled up, because you control it better. It doesn't gain more hit point, it doesn't swing its weapon any harder, but now it has access to better supplies and gear, making for increased survivability.
As there's not a particularly apt system for emulating such a thing, one is paradoxically left to sublimate the analog of one's personal experience into an effective character level.

Same with Hunter Rank in Online mode, and that's closer to the traditional 'Level' in game mechanic. That being said, in FantasyCraft I could do this as a class that does not gain hit points, but does gain increased reputation, renown, and skills that appropriate reflect the improved player capabilities.

You can hate on it with as many One Piece manga panels as you want, but the logic fits and holds.

    > and I'm willing to not have something that exactly mirrors the game for the sake of a good PnP

    exactly mirrors?

It doesn't mirror it at all, in fact the only thing it shares is the setting, like I said its basically giving a paint job to a tired system. Whats the point of even calling it monster hunter? It shouldn't share the same name as it isn't like the game, just call it Ravines and Rathians. I appreciate RNG's effort but its ignoring the elements that make Monster Hunter interesting and unique.

Not who you're responding to but.

The logic doesn't hold at all.

You don't level up, your gear doesn't level up until after you make more weapons and armor at all, nothing changes except the monsters become more difficult but you have more party members to reflect that.

Need more HP? Go get a new chestplate which gives10 and then add gems to your gear to get another 15.

This is just such a waste of potential. Something new, original and fresh could have been created, could still be, but instead you insist on making a rehash of previous systems with a MH creatures, what is interesting about that. Instead of experimenting with something new and the thing that makes Monster Hunter special you're just stripping it away.

I'm doing it in FantasyCraft because it's what I feel like running.

If you're going to be that asspained, contribute, but I'm not making your game for you. The person who originally got me started on this was LITERALLY doing Monster Hunter Weapons for 4E. That thread had far less vagina sand than this one simple because I don't feel like doing NU UNEEK PRESHUS SNOFLAEK SISTUMZ purely for the setting and genre. The game is non-magic fantasy, to my eye, and I'm tricking it out accordingly.

You want it in GURPS? Go for it. You want to do it in Exalted? I'm not stopping you, and would like to see it. Hell, you want it in Mutants and freaking Masterminds? My hat would be off to you.

But if all you're going to do is bitch and moan about me not making the game you want, you will be mocked, derided, and generally taken not very seriously at all.

    Wow.

I'm just trying to figure out why are you even bothering?

So you can have a Monster Hunter setting?

Instead of having the Monster Hunter system, everyone has same base stats when naked and stats are improved by armor and weapons.

If you're not gonna keep that why even make the game at all. I know it sounds repetitive but why are you including levels and experience at all when that is in no way Monster Hunter?

O NOEZ EXISTAN MEKANIX EVERYTHING IS RUINED FOREVER!

Back on topic, one that I'd like to stat up, and have had hell of a time figuring out, is the Qurupeco. Mimicry makes for effective summons, and it technically doesn't control the creatures it calls, so mostly it's a 'let's muddle things up all the more in the area, and I can slip out in the middle of the confusion' type thing. Certainly a nasty surprise for someone to encounter when sent on a quest to kill one thing, only to find out it's Yet Another Goddamned Qurupeco causing trouble. I also picture them as being the least hesitant about going near civilized areas, to increase their racket repertoire. The flammable sludge they spit would work effectively as an oil weapon that doesn't do damage until ignited, but can also be quick-lit on expulsion. I've not figured out what kind of duration to use, or whether it should be considered soluble in water.

Have it act like oil with water and last until it washes off or dries (1d3 hours).

Guys, stop trying to put levelling up systems where levelling up systems are not required.

Make your equipment give you all your stats.

Say, all characters have base 10 in all stats, and 20 HP, always. But then their equipment seperates them out.

So take your average, starter game hunter:

    Alloy Helm (+2 AC, -1 fire, -1 ice, -1 thunder, +1 dragon, +2 Health.)
    Alloy Chestplate (+4 AC, -2 fire, -1 ice, +2 dragon, +3 health)
Alloy vambraces (+1 AC, -1 fire, +1 dragon, +1 Health)
    Alloy Faulds (+3 AC, -1 fire, -2 ice, +2 dragon, +3 health)
Alloy Boots (+2 AC, -1 ice, +1 dragon, +1 Health)
    Pawn talisman (+10 Oxygen)

Now, if we are going by the same system as the MH games (Once you get to a certain number of points in a skill, that skill gets a new level. In this case, +10 health skill, level one health, which nets you +20 HP)

This equipment set gives them enough points to have get a health boost of +20, and the following defenses:
17 AC (In the games, your defense is always pretty low, so I vote base 5)
-5 Fire (Elemental resistances don't follow the skill system so much.)
    -5 Ice
    +1 Thunder
    +7 Dragon
    0 Water

    Active Skills:
    Health level 1
    Oxygen level 1

How does that example sound? It follows more or less exactly to the source, and looks to be a fairly good way of doing it as well.

You don't start with enough money to buy alloy gear.
You have to go on quests to be able to afford it.
You're going to try to tell me that in the course of doing the quests to come up with the 5K zenny total you learned nothing and didn't get better at Monster Hunting.
This is where I fail to understand why you're so upset about adaptation to a level system not reflecting the gaining of SUPER KEWL POWERS but simply gaining a clue and learning how to do your job better.

That said, the armor skill system you reference, from in-game, was what I was looking at implementing AS the class feature; in most games such items obviously have a resource cost, be it in currency, time, or effort in gathering the materials, learning the craft, and creating the items one's self. Much as an expert race car driver knows how to coax optimal performance out of a vehicle better than your average schlub, a Monster Hunter would be able to get better performance out of their gear, from better maintenance of a blade's sharpness to putting on the armor just right for ease of comfort and maximum flexibility when carrying large heavy egg-type objects. The implementation of level is not to indicate what you can do, as much as it is to reference what one HAS accomplished, much like Hunter Rank.

It's a design philosophy difference, and not BADWRONGFUN. You say Paranoia, I say Gamma World, we have our fun our respective interpretive ways.

I don't think there should be any class system at all.

Thing is though, I'm imagining a system where you get a large amount of equipment available to purchase at the beginning, and then you mix and match out of that with the funding you have. You then proceed to kick the crap out of monsters to get better equipment, and thus, better stats, removing the need for a levelling system at all.

I'm thinking each elemental resistance is on a 1:1 damage block basis. Hunters in the games are always squishy, and this translates in the system as AC, your ability to dodge, which, if failed, then hits you. You then take your elemental resistance/defense out of the damage dealt, and subtract the result from HP.

    1. You speak as though any measure of character learning will suddenly make them incredibly stronger against, say, a kut-ku, per your example, yet they will by that point learn to stay the fuck away from the tail end, that it's got a vulnerability to bang/sonic damage, and that fire breath fucking hurts, and to get the fuck out of dodge when it goes into rage mode.

    2. Well, technically, in MHF2/U, you get titles for taking on thousands upon thousands of kut-ku; hit up the arena, and you get kut-ku coins. Put on sufficiently sturdy armor and whip out a suitably upgraded weapon, and you can hack your way through dozens on a Breeding Season quest. And, as above, if you're going to do that well, you've obviously learned a thing or two about fighting kut-ku, and by extension fighting monsters. Pants-on-head retardation would have long since gone out the window.

    >>10143031
See, to me, that's a clever idea, but doesn't really accomplish much. It's also geared, pardon the pun, towards different tastes, I'd wager, closer to a Call of Cthulu style game of the non-d20 variant. Which, again, different fun. That being said, you'd need a robust enough resolution system so that your 100 HP wonder not get one-shot by everything else out there, unless your GM decides not to just drop a Rath on a group of starting adventurers. Or a Tigrex. Or what have you.

My only suspicion is that you'll likely not find people to play, unless you're fortunate enough to NOT have peers of the 'this needs to have stats so I can kill it' nature.

I've never seen the appeal of being an asshole when you're good at something, so I suppose that may be why I'm not a fan of theirs. Also, if Bro wasn't being used dickishly, then mea culpa; I've only seen it used either in a 'Halo Roolz Bro' or 'Cool Story Bro' context. As far as NO FLASHBOMBS NAKED ONLY FINAL DESTINATION goes, I suppose it's good for ePeen cred, but it strikes me as more chore than fun. That being said, everyone finds different things fun, which is why I'm doing a FantasyCraft adaptation, and not, say, Dark Heresy, or the GURPS version (which I'd do with a variation on GURPS Ice Age, but I digress). I might come back to a different variation, eventually; right now, I'm doing what has my attention, regardless of how much people scream BADWRONGFUN like it's edition wars or whatnot. Any and all contributors are welcome, though, and where we may disagree on method, the monsters themselves might end up being suitably statted in a fashion that works from system to system.
