What a long, strange trip it's been. After the past year and a half, you can hardly believe you're finally here, at the doorstep of the nation's ruler, the great city at the heart of Perin. Bem, resplendent in his fancy robes, accompanied by two fully-armored guards and practically dragging a group of musicians behind him, walks at your side as you climb the wide white steps to the top of the Lord's manor. A light dusting of snow settles slowly against the stone gargoyles proudly manning the entrance, and you can hear a faint growl as you pass them, entering the main gate under the watchful eyes of the Lord's personal troops.

The royal guard lead you straight in, past rows and rows of portraits, busts, suits of armor, and somber-looking attendants in the enormous, decorated foyer. A few well-dressed nobles, coming from their own meeting with the Lord, look upon you and your motley assortment of lessers with disdain, though they move very quickly indeed when you shift your hands to your belt. You are obviously unarmed, but no one in their right mind would take you lightly, given your size and reputation.

At the doors to the main hall, easily twice your height and weighing many tons, you are greeted, looked over, and marked off a long, long list by a heavyset man wearing far too many medals. His expression never changes as you walk in, the doors moving silently forward at the briefest touch from the captain of the guard. You are immediately struck by the richness of the scene, the incredible, screaming opulence of the hall. Everything around you seems to advertise at the top of its voice how expensive it all was. Bem strides confidently in as you try to keep from gawking, his eyes forward and his little smirk telling you how he expects to own all of this within a year.

The Lord, sitting on a throne you could fit comfortably in, surrounded on both sides by a host of nobles, guards, and attendants covered in so much gold and silver that they could be used as mirrors, looks up briefly as Bem announces you, with the backing of the musicians' horns.

'Thus do we receive Captain Maya Terrasdottir, giant of the North,' says the tall, bespectacled man just to the Lord's right, 'Speak at your leisure.'

You say your piece, a short, modest greeting agreed upon beforehand, and Bem takes over, putting his diplomatic skills to good use. He makes the most incredible speech you've ever heard, using words you doubt even exist, managing to impress even the normally-stuffed-up nobles, though the Lord himself merely nods politely and displays a brief smile. More than once, the man to the Lord's right bends down and whispers something in his ear, though you have no idea what it could be. As the elder extols your considerable virtues, your skills, your loyal service, and a dozen other things, carefully dancing around your release of the frost demon, many of the nobles glance at you, and look away with an expression of profound arrogance. You notice that all present are human, perfect specimens of their own stock.

In the end, Lord Olan, face arrayed with the signs of boredom, sees fit to grant you your request for noble title, recognizing the assistance you have provided, and the rather embellished reports from your commanding officers, the Conclave, and Intelligence. He dubs you Countess Maya, officer of the royal court, and has several attendants present you with papers of identity and a sizable book of high law. You are granted control of Dreamwood (a hole in the ground far below your status, as he says), as well as the surrounding area, to do with as you see fit, as far as is allowed. You are free to choose a seal, build a manor, organize an order of Knights, and attend the gatherings held by other local nobles, among other things.

'This is a reward and obligation both,' says the Lord, sternly, 'Your responsibilities will try your patience and your will, but you must hold yourself high. You are of my court, Countess.' His eyes narrow. 'I expect to be impressed. Your situation is unique, as are your qualifications. You will find that the attentions of this nation follow your every word and action. Walk proudly.'

For better or for worse, you have attained exactly what you sought, and in a manner that speaks well of your character. The County of Dreamwood, and all associated territories, are yours to shape and to mold according to your vision. You have come far.

At this moment, you remain at the end of the Lord's speech, standing motionless in his great hall. As you command, it will be done.

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

'With these new borders, we certainly have the space. But we cannot support more than a hundred, perhaps two hundred more. You know my stance on this, but I am no longer in charge. Please consider things thoroughly before you do something everyone will regret.'

Ilian congratulates you on your acquisition, and offers to set you up with everything he can spare. How about we just bring in 50 people at a time huh? That's a manageable number, and the extra labor will help develop the town.

Now, do we want to turn Dreamwood into a bustling metropolis like 1920's Chicago, or do we want a beautiful city like something you see in fantasy novels?

Because we lack the infrastructure for such a huge migration of people. Because even if the season were to be right for a harvest of pumpkins, we would need enough surplus so that the population could make it through the winter. Because even if the newcomers were to be set to farming and building new housing, that assumes that they are all skilled enough to farm effectively (dependent on the land) or build structures that will last through the winter (assuming that there are enough building materials readily at hand).

I'm all for looking for new magical artifacts in the city, and negotiating for better connections and artifacts from the Conclave.
In the meantime, we should really get some of the higher-level planning done for Dreamwood.
    Here's what I propose:
Hire a cartographer and some woodsmen (rangers) to map out our new holdings.
Hire a druid to test the fertility of the soil and such for suitability for farmland. We should also set aside some forest for tree farms, too.
What we can do with the two of them working together is to come up with a agricultural plan on where it is best to farm, and where forests need to be maintained for ecological reasons (prevent floods, mudslides, and general erosion).

Note that all major rails MUST lead through Dreamwood, and provide convenient 1-hour gaps in train departure times encouraging people to derp around in Dreamwood for a bit before moving on to their destination.
Then we'd need a Labor Manager to ensure there's always jobs for new people coming in, and make some advertisements about working in Dreamwood for safety, food, and a chance to live in amongst the marvels.

of course, in all this, we'll still need to secure sources of farming food (by crop or livestock), construction materials (be they steel, stone or wood), and the people needed to transform the above into food and housing for the people.

Hours pass. Bem seeks the back rooms and the privileged stock of the capital, working magic of his own. Time flies.

    Artifacts found:

A crate of miscellaneous alchemy charms, all united by a runic script built into the bars containing the object, used as a power source. With channeling, it can be used in conjunction with most alchemy-related charms and magelocks, but only one at a time.
Thirteen identical human-size rings, one for each finger and three on a necklace, carrying the capacity to make nearly-exact copies of mundane objects, up to the size of a bed.
A magelock imprinted with a very powerful spell that can be used once per day. When given a schematic of a structure, it causes that structure to self-construct around it over a period of several hours.

You know we have to pay them while our own people and immigrants would do that for free. Someone who has worked their whole life as a farmer or lumberjack should also have high STR and END, adventurers are not the only ones entitled for this, you know.

Are you people still lingering to the idea that communism is anything then entirely evil? Please go read some history books or something. Nothing good has EVER have come out of it.
I understand that some kind of overglorification exists on the internet about Commies and about Nazism for that matter (I strongly believe it is a running joke).

Get it into your head. It does not work. It never will. So much misery and pain has it caused in every damn country it has ever been. Take North Korea as example, do you want that to happen here too? Because that will inevitably happen. Not while we are in charge of course, that would never happen. But take into consideration that we wont be here forever and that these ideas will spread beyond our reach and horribly affect other countries.

Anyway, I am talking as a Russian. I see with my own eyes every day how that horrible regime still affects after 20 years. So I know what I am saying. It is 2:30 AM now, I am sleepy and it's hard to elaborate further.
I know that you are living in DEMOCRACY & CAPITALISM and you think it is most unjust and corrupt system. But believe me no matter how bad it is, tyranny is thousand-fold worse. Yes, tyranny, because no matter what you think, communism was and forever will be tyrannic rule.

But we should not dictate every life aspect of people. If someone wants to save money and get a better house, by all means, let them. If someone thinks they could set up a clockworker shop and build clocks of their own design, let them (this kind of thing was hardly possible in USSR as every goddamn thing from cars to nails had to go through highly inefficient bureaucratic machine to get approved).

He told me that they didn't even use them in winter as they could not handle cold much and had to be repaired every month or so.

People from former soviet countries are known to be handymen who can fix everything. Have you wondered why? Because soviet products were shit and broke often, you couldn't buy new stuff so people were pretty much forced to fix everything themself.

Create a formal land registry from this information- our personal property will be lands used only marginally. The common lands will be city property- not owned by ourselves, and indirectly controlled.

We'll promote immigration, but we shouldn't screw over old Dreamwood- we need to think about mechanisms of social cohesion. We want a high ratio of capital to labor- hordes of peniless churls are a bad idea. We should create a new town to the south of Dreamwood to smooth the transition as well.

Home. Finally home. You have seen but a brief fraction of the country, and a small sliver of the war, but you are here again, stronger, much more powerful, and with the authority that made it all worthwhile. Bem, too, has benefited immensely from the trip, gaining enormous amounts of wealth that you spent entirely in the space of a few hours, and setting up his own private empire of dice and cards in New Aarmour. He takes great pleasure in parading his hired muscle around and having them give demonstrations of their considerable skills.

While food and drink are prepared and passed around, you speak of your travels and your battles, touching on your defense of the first fortress and the disintegration of the fire giant, the sieges of the other fortresses, and your encounter with Erivrus's new body. Every minute you are interrupted by a new question, about what it's like in the West, who Mitchell was, what thermite is used for, an a million other things. You manage, with a little time, to craft a small ice model of the living forge for everyone to see, and convert it to stone with your new charm.

Everyone, down to the last farmer, tells you how much you were missed, how the absent thunder of your armored footfalls made the town seem empty and silent. Always, whenever you're out, Dreamwood is less than it should be, incomplete without your smile. It's touching to know how much you mean to these people, and how much you will mean when all of your projects come to a head. The pace of change is frightening to some, especially the older members, but the children adore Vasian's trinkets and model boilers, the poppers made from black powder and scraps. For those growing up with your influence, the world is fast and wonderful, made of progress and infinite possibilities. For the rest, small-town folks born and raised in what you consider abject poverty and oppression, Dreamwood is becoming unrecognizable.

This gives me a good idea to implement harsh safety regulations. We are defiantly going to have some factories but we do not need to follow exact footsteps as they were on earth (no safety until some catastrophic accident happens that takes lives of hundreds of people)

This was home, a collection of huts in the backwater dirt, as far North as you can get without being eaten by giants. The stream was fresh water, the fields were grain, the road outside was there for taxes, for the men and boys sent off to war. Life was simple: Grow, work, and die content. Now the formula has changed, and there is no way to know what the next week will bring, let alone the next year. The people here have seen more contact with Fain in the last month than they would have seen for several seasons before your arrival. They have been exposed to a wondrous, expansive place beyond their sight, and it is hard to accept.

You have changed lives. From the moment you walked out of the forest, you have been something to these people. At first, a terror, then, a helpful acquaintance. Now, you are the leader of a revolution, lord and master of the lands, holding enough power to destroy them seventy times over and enough knowledge to grant them all a world they cannot comprehend. Most of these men and women are still almost illiterate, exceeded easily by their own children. The farmers and builders adapt to new technology, the smiths and chemists to new techniques, but they feel limited and lost. You have brought them so much, but they feel they cannot hope to use it without you holding their hand.

Times of change are nearly always times of upheaval. But here, apart from Earth, a world as yet untouched by true modernity, the smallest piece of outside knowledge can induce radical alterations and wreck entire cultures in a night. The revolution you are attempting to spearhead is a terrible, frightening thing to some, though it fills others with hope and drive. If your present course is continued, a zigzag path untempered by a real understanding of its effects, you fear Dreamwood will become a casualty of its own success.

'Progress is not the enemy,' you say, 'Divisiveness, internal conflict, ignorance: these are the enemy.' You continue for several incredible minutes, giving the townspeople an overview of your plans, a picture of your vision and their place in it. Dreamwood will grow stronger, and it will grow larger, extending from a foundation of hard work and innovation, driven by a determined populace. There will be a place for all, no matter what.

The boiler rests completed on a stand of stone and metal, sitting alone outside the forge. Repeated tests confirm that it holds water and produces quite a lot of steam, though it must be carefully monitored, lest the pressure force it open. The valves are crude, and Vasian has yet to come up with a reliable pressure gauge, but everything does work.

For the remainder of the day, you assist Dreman with your alchemy, helping to refine his constructions and fit them tightly to the existing parts. Once you reinforce the boiler and connect everything, you perform yet another test. The engine successfully drives a piston, but the boiler's main valve gets stuck open and the whole thing must be shut down. Still, it's a proof of concept, at the very least. Vasian is churning out designs for wheels, armatures, and gears, besides his work on black powder weapons. The scholars on hand are helping wherever they can, but this is all new to them as well.

Your gauntlets scrape together as you crack your knuckles, preparing to put your massive powers to work yet again. The bruises on your arms and legs grab at your attention, but you ignore them, focusing on a specific style, a specific period in time. The twenties, when the city and its great works was king.

Plates of glassy ice form out of thin air, leeching moisture as they build and interlock, surrounded by growing columns and etching with patterns. A courtyard forms, stretching long and settling the foundation of a fountain in its center, leading up to the beginnings of a house, fit for one of your stature and authority. A roof rises on ornate and strengthened walls as doorways and window frames expand out of facings. You feel your stamina drain away as the structure completes, a paragon of architectural design, fairly modest in size but great in its elegance.

On the center column, you scrape a string of words into the ice, a placeholder for the plaque that will grace the mighty structure with a smattering of philosophy.

'Built neither by gods nor kings, but ordinary men. By the belief of she who believes in you, seize the day.'

It has been seven days. The town, with the return of your influence, blossoms into activity, and the typical winter slump is swept away by high spirits. The manor, in all its glory, is converted to stone, with the windows made of silicon and the doors of fine wood. The plaque is solid iron, melded into the shape of the column so that it cannot fall away. Though the fountain does not yet work, Vasian suggests using a steam-powered pump, once the technology is available. This would advertise the engine to visitors, and it could be made to fit with the manor's aesthetic.

Over the past week, the construction magelock has built a five-building school campus and two additional houses. As long as it continues working, it will speed expansion considerably. Unfortunately, it might be a unique piece, as neither alchemist has ever heard of anything like it, and such an item would obviously be in widespread use if it could be mass-produced, especially at the comparatively low price you acquired it for. Still, if you find you have a knack for enchanting, you could possibly make your own, with time.

    Immigration:

1 Architect, city-born and skilled in designing urban dwellings.
2 Agricultural specialists, both from regions near the plantations.
1 Assistant Professor of Economics, from New Aarmour. Bem considers her bright but arrogant.
1 Miner, a retiree, very skilled.
1 Nature mage, spacey but considerably talented.
1 Counselor, a pioneer in a field many do not take seriously.
1 Merchant, who Bem says has a lot to learn but has a head for the odds.
1 Surgeon, non-magically-talented, but with dexterous hands and knowledge of sanitation.
    5 Carpenters
    4 Masons

Suppose if I go with that theory (this is magic after all, our mind can not be altered to fit body otherwise we would be raging murdering maniac as all Frost Giants are)

I would still oppose to the romance part since I see absolutely nothing in Kel. Yes, we have known him for along time, yes he once save us from DoD and helped to fell Trolls (speaking of which, I wonder if there are any threats needed to be cleared on our territory) but thats it. If we follow that trend we should have major hots for Ervrus.

He's just a simple hunter for fuck's sake. Give me someone like Kamina or other awesome manly dudes (who are, like totally, okay to be GAR for) and I will change my opinion on this matter.

Though maybe I am a bit biased because I do not think like a girl (protip: because I'm not one, neither any of us)

    I agree with this anon.
Remember, Frost Giants, as a race, are barbaric and savage, something that we have shown to not be. This is not so much an environmental and cultural thing, so much as racial. Recall the example of the Hill Giants (Half Frost, Half Mountain); they invariably become mentally unstable because their minds are torn between their two natures, something that would not normally happen if it was a simple matter of upbringing and culture.
So, there must be magic going on that allows Maya to maintain a human state of mind while in a Frost Giant body. Such magic may interfere with the adaption of a mind to its physical body. Even then, there are innumerable examples here on Earth of people who refuse to accept the physical bodies that they were born with, and have them surgically altered to match the body image that they have in their mind.
In short, there is nothing to suggest that simply being in a female Frost Giant body would make Maya think like a female.
If you have evidence pointing to the contrary, I would be more than happy to examine it.

INTRODUCE THE TOWNSFOLK TO BASEBALL. I bet the Twins would get a kick out of the idea of team sports to begin with.

Fuck, I heard about that. People cutting of their legs or hands because they feel "alien" to them, as if they aren't supposed to be there. I cannot imagine how must that even feel, maybe it's the same feeling as numbness... but always, since birth, never leaving *shudder*

The really frightening part is when they cut limbs off and people talk to them afterward... and remark on how much more cheerful they are, more upbeat and contented with their lives.

The human mind is a fucked up thing.

Exactly. So, I think that the people clamoring for Maya to act like a woman and embark upon a relationship with Kel need to think long and hard about the implications of what they're suggesting. Because if the physical container, as >>10168219
put it, can affect the mind to the point where it's own body image and gender self-identification change, what's to prevent that seething, roiling, churning mass of barbarism and Frost Giant savagery that is a known part of the Frost Giant makeup from eventually bursting forth from the depths of Maya's nascent subconscious and laying waste to Dreamwood? And if you want to say that since this is a reconstituted body, that such a thing may have been removed by the gods, then why would being in a specific physical container affect our self-image? This hasn't even touched upon unintended consequences of such tampering, either.
Now, granted, the Frost Giants don't appear to have always been this way, if the Great City in the North and Hretmar are any indication, but none of the gods of the Perin pantheon seemed able to determine what exactly was the cause, or how to reverse it. So I find it unlikely that they would have been able to identify the specific trait that causes the barbarity in Frost Giants and removed it without side-effects.
None of this has even touched upon the compatibility of personalities, what we actually see in Kel, or even how Maya actually feels about Kel (Bro or boyfriend?).
