It's that time of . . . time, again. Lord Quest.

    Previous threads are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Lord%20Quest

Saw this posted in a thread a bit back, cheers to whoever thought fit to put it together.

Last time on Lord Quest we found out the culprit was Snyv, a young lordling in the land of Ell. Sheff and James have taken things into their own hands and you've been managing the estate back home again.

Starting with a new month, so brace for NUMBERS. Feel free to make your event roll/your alchemy roll.

For new people here's a vague list of important characters QL made way back on thread four.

    You are Thomas (Thom) Green
    "Advisors"
    - Leold: Your uncle's hunting buddy and friend.
    - Smyatt: Accountant, merchant and general manager of the place. Did most of the day-to-day running under your uncle.
    - Sir Peter Doobs: Hedge Knight, in service of your uncle. Your cousin, of much lower rank. Newly knighted by your uncle on his deathbed, was uncle's squire before that.
    - Erik: Your oldest (bastard) uncle. Was a scholar for most his life, after being exiled from the priesthood for insufficient devotion. Speaks many languages.
    - Zeek: Priest of Exidaid. He is proficient at healing small injuries and can handle larger ones with time.
    - Baldric: A peasant, of below average intelligence (but high for a peasant). A lackey. Possibly has a touch of the mind fever.
    - Marcus: A chef.
    - Shorty: Tallest and smartest of the yeomen. Promoted to DOOBS Squire.
    - Dan Ganawb: Mason (costs 5 silver per month)
    "Deities"
    - Byron: An easygoing god who demands little obedience and brings good luck in hunting, battle and general rough endeavors. Thom and Leold's patron deity.
    - Exidaid: A god of healing.
    - Artagus: A goddess of hunting. She has a local (unmanned) temple nearby.
    "Others"
    - Urist: A very friendly dwarfen merchant who often brings the town fine wares.
    - Sir Pinky: A pet white mouse.
    - Lord Sheff: Leader of Seakay, a bordering territory comprised of many towns. Very good relations. He's helped us a bit, and we bought him a fine 30 gold sword. His wife loves cooking, and Sheff loves good food.
    - Daughter of Lord Sheff: Beautiful, but not particularly ladylike. She rejoices in alchemy and other hobbies odd for any nobility, let alone a young lady. However she still has many suitors, mainly the richer Seakay merchants.
    - Thom's Brother: Leant us a large sum of money to commission Sheff's sword.

    Reposting alchemy rules too now.

    ALCHEMY RULES

These will take a week (-1 from your roll for the month, can stack) or a month for a slow test (+5 on the alchemy roll).

You can experiment to increase your skill the hard way, or can do any alchemists tasks you learn. At the moment you know experimentation, making corrosive pouches and ash to lye. However you can't make commercial amounts of lye solo, and don't have the stuff to do it largescale.
A Roll of 1 is a crit success, bonus may vary. A roll of 2 is a great success, doubling the result.

All of these are a roll to get under your alchemy skill (6) with the worst result always failing, until you're skill is double the skill needed.

Simple expeirment (d8) (+.1 for pass)
Hard Experiment (d12) (+.2 for pass)
Difficult Experiment (d16) (+.4 for pass)
    Peat to Coal (d4)
    Ash to Lye (d6)
Corrosive pouches/caustic bags (d10) (uses lye)

    Alchemy cont.

You can do a dangerous experiment which will give a -1 modifier to any passes, but a +1 modifyer to fails (slow being good). A result of max (nat x when rolling a Dx with +1 mod) will result an a serious faliure, and will likely HURT (d10+3 on crit fail table).
Any critical faliures otherwise will roll a d5 on the alchemy critical fail chart, wanting low.

    >>10356889
Well, there's no shortage of other teachers. DOOBS and Cohen are both better at you in combat, and Cohen has the advantage of having a totally different fighting style. If you'll want to do more then just train and stay at where you are, you'll need to dedicate a month to it, and spend your time training instead of alchemy-ing.

Depends on the level of magic involved. Wisdom for example was imbued by several arch-magi and the high priests of the Wild Gods (back when Erondia still worshipped them), and is one of the most potent magical items in Erondia, and would likely be worth more then the entire Green Family Estate, let alone your backwater border princedom.

Your character, having grown up in Erondia know that not only is this a stupidly impossible bad idea, but even if you did succeed, it wouldn't work for you, and breaking the artefact would need mages of legend. I would like to ask you something, Quest Lord.

Do you fully understand what you did when you gave us the title to a Duchy? I ask because Dukes are, quite literally, one step below the royal family in social, pollitical, and military power. The Duke of Aquitaine conducted a civil war with the King of France himself and had a decent chance to win for a while, for instance. And he was just one duke, albeit a powerful one. You have mentioned that this is your custom setting so this information might not be accurate, but just in case I would like to throw it out there.

The social order generally went thusly:

    >landed Knights
These were the smallest landholders, generally overseeing between 20 and 200 peasants and their work, though some esteemed knights were appointed to rule over towns due to the fact they presented very little in the way of a social threat to their Lord's power.

    >Lord
Generic title for tens of thousands of minor landholders (Baronets, ect.) who had a few knights serving under them, and the lowest rank of the peerage. Usually had between 1 and 20 knights under them, generally unlanded knights who were used for battle only.

    >Baron/Baroness
First "Real" rank of the peerage. Often considered the lowest rank of the nobility, these large landowners were also the first rank likely to have a keep that was anything more than a fancy name for a mansion. They were generally given dominon over between 2 and 25 minor lords and their retainers.

    >Viscount
A rank with some controversy, Viscount is probably more accurately called "Extremely powerful Baron." Later in the Middle Ages this was formalized into Viscount status and they were ranked above Barons but below Counts. They generally can call upon 3 to 30 Barons, though the upper end of that scale leans more towards Count status.

    >Count
Very large and esteemed landholder, generally had 2 to 3 Viscounts under them if applicable and dozens of Barons. Some counts do not answer to a Duke but directly to the King himself, though this is not common. Very powerful, lowest rank capable of conducting a real war (minor one, but still) by itself.

    >Dukes/Duchesses
Second highest ranked title after King. Largest landholders after the King, usually with between 2 and 8 Counts answering to them along with a multitude of Barons, Lords, and landed Knights. Extremely influential and powerful and as a group often shaped kingdom policy more than the King himself.

    >King
Usually the largest landholder with the richest provinces under his direct rule, but not always.

The order is more/less in order, but the importance differs in Erondia. Also, since you're not part of Erondia proper, you're somewhat of a loose value - you're not directly accountable to anyone except the King, but you're not on par with the Dukes or Arch-Dukes (who are almost like Kings of lesser nations).

IRL you have the facts. In crazy fantasy land, landless dukes are around, generally hereditary titles belonging to people who have lost their lands, or have been earned by some act. They tend to hand around the court, or lead the King's Armies (so there's some power, if no land). Some titles have assumed titles (The Grand Exchequer and Treasurer of the Kingdom is a Duke, with all the benefits of being a duke, but no land or armies (other then the tax collectors)).

Seeing as blood is linked to power thanks to things like the Staff Wisdom, The Sword Justice, and stuff, the next in bloodline has a natual advantage in any power stuggle. I'm shocked we lived as long as we did before the first death. At least in d20 systems if you roll a 1 it's just you drop your sword, or maybe stab yourself at worst and lose some HP. But in quests (all quests, it's a law or something) when you roll a 1 you apparently are impaled on rusty poison coated barbed spikes that suck out your soul.

Man, it only takes being chased down the street by a cassowary once before you stop writing off all the tales about Aus. Sure, lots of crap is dangerous, but not ALL of it.. and then you find out that all the tales the yanks tell are true, and you really do live in a murderous hellhole. Ever go camping at night? Shine a light into the bush. Those pinpricks? WOLF SPIDERS. As we speak, my spare bedroom's cupboard is filled with white tails. Everytime I pay an exterminator to gas them, they are back inside a week. I came within an inch of being stung by a platypus, and my friend was. I've been stung by a bluebottle - one of them hit my balls because I was wearing baggy shorts. I've had a wombat charge my ankles and knock me down, then run over the top of me. I get divebombed by magpies everywhere I go, and I swear those fucking kookaburras are laughing at me.
