"Come one, come ALL!" the dwarf's voice booms from the stone platform.

The slave market reeks of fear-sweat, stale urine and huddled unwashed bodies exposed to air only rarely.

"We have gladiators, house servants, Half-giants, dancing girls, and tutors for the elite! Come, gather around! No purse is too small to purchase too large! Come see the finest in slaves from House M’ke!"

The Dark Sun beats down upon the mud bricks, making the air stifling and increasing the potency of the miasma. Illiene, a tattooed mindbender and your friend, turns to you, his dark face crinkling in mirth as a Half-Elfen Bard is led down the stairs to you, obsidian shackles around his wrists. Your new gladiator, bought a paid for.

"I love the market," Illiene says, sipping from his waterskin. "Smells like opportunity."

Who are you? You are Tordek, son of Tordek, an aging mul veteran Gladiator.

You have three blooded gladiators (functionally lv 2) and are slowly expanding your gladiatorial buisness.

The question is now, do you wish to invest in another gladiator, see about hiring a trainer to work with your three promising slaves to make them into full (lv 1) gladiators, buy monsters or animals for the arena perhaps, or do you wish to expand the structure of your gladiatorial school?

Personally I think we should plan to expand our business interests outside of simply training and entering gladiators. If we acquire a good amount of "pleasure providers" we could add an extension to our compound and run a brothel, with a few gladiators acting as security. Not to mention potential prizes for gladiators who perform well.

Hi guys. I'll be here for a few hours

    >>12001268
Expanding into brothels is certainly an option, particularly in Dark Sun. At the moment though most of your finances (and rep) is tied up in gladiatorial games.

Still if I can get three votes for this plan entertainers (jugglers, tightropewalkers, etc.) or investing in a brothel is an option I can expand into in the future.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/10(Wed)03:36 No.12001398
    >>12001386
Jugglers are boring. We already have a bard. We could have dancing ladies and hookers doing their things while our bard, or multiple bards eventually, playing for the crowd.

Using well performing gladiators as security + letting them bang the hookers as a prize for performance works.

At the moment you have two Fighters (defenders) and one Bard (leader)

I'm using 4e rules and the character generator. I literally have a character sheet (30 now) for each gladiator.

Defenders are tanks, focus enemy attacks on themselves, and dish out punishment

Leaders heal and (bards in particular) control allies with movement.

    >> Anonymous 09/08/10(Wed)03:45 No.12001468
Expanding to haivng a brothel sounds like a plan, but we should wait until we've got some more cash in the bank to finance something like that.

    We'd need:
    Cash for expansion.
    Cash for slaves.
Cash for more entertainment. The one bard is good and could play music, but a few musicians to back him up would be nice.

    >Trainers

You have three slaves that have potential to become full gladiators.

    Unskilled Slave – Finesse Dude
    Criminal – Big McLarge Huge
    Criminal – Scarface

Finesse dude could be trained to become a martial, arcane or psionic class
Big McLarge Huge could be trained to become a martial class (best is fighter)
Scarface could be trained to become a martial class (best is fighter or rogue)

    >Training
Training takes about a month, depending on a die roll.

Tordek (you) are a Fighter and can train martial classes.
Illiene (psion) can train psionic classes

    Trainers for hire
    ---------------------
--Half-Giant. Former Sergeant slave under Kalak’s legions in Tyr. He is a Fighter and can train promising slaves in melee techniques.
    >120 cp for 3 months.
--Human. A shadowy 'associate' that Illiene knows as a go between with the Elfen Market. He is a Rogue and can train promising slaves in melee techniques.
    >100 cp 3 months
--Human. An instructor at the famed Raam academy, the Psiumarkh. He is a Psion and can train promising slaves in psionic techniques.
    >120 cp 3 months.

**Note that Illiene could also train a promising slave in psionic techniques if he does nothing else but that.

-- Dray. A sorcerer, rumored to be a defiler and member of a dray clan in the employ of Abalach-Re herself. Purchasing his services is legal with your permit. He is a Sorcerer and may train promising slaves in the arcane arts.

    I would agree.

Since this quest is getting a bit option heavy (which I like and I hope you do as well), let me summarize the consensus options

    280 cp
    you could
    > buy one more gladiator
    > hire one trainer to train your promising slaves into gladiators

With both of those options you would have enough left over to expand the gladiator school a bit if you wish. For example your new gladiator needs a new room I believe.

A Simple room is cheap, 10 cp

Tordek sees Illiene gesture wildly and try his smoothest tones with the Dray. However the legendary lawyerly attitude of the Dray wins out and Illiene walks over, his poker face falling for a moment in irritation. ' He said he would do it for one month, but he's going to charge us 60 ceramic pieces if we want him. That would leave us with 220 ceramic or so, but I'm annoyed I couldn't get him to go lower.'

What they are technically is a short term investment. Most of these guys you payed 5 cp for 3 (wretches) so you are making pretty good profit. The trade off was that there was a damn good chance the wretches/criminals were diseased or will die with your training schedule.

A roar sounds from the beast pens. A slavering

    **************Interruption!****************

The creak of wagons and the lash of the whip combine to make a cacophony at the arena entrance. Tordek dips his thumb in ink and spits on it, making his mark on the papyrus the black robed templar pushes over to him. ‘Just sign here, here …and here,’ the bored government worker says, focusing most of his attention on Sandria as she stands by Tordek, her dress subtly clinging to her ample assets. Why couldn’t Illiene just deal with this stuff, Tordek wonders, peering at the undecipherable symbols. Why wasn’t he back yet?

“Tordek, son of Tordek?” an imperious voice speaks, and the young templar immediately straightens up and looks busy, shuffling papers. Tordek looks up into …. a rather familiar face. Its ‘Wart’, that Templar who bet on Watapon on his rookie engagement.

“Please follow me,” ‘Wart’ turns imperiously and leads Tordek down into the bowels of the arena’s staging area.

The crimson rays of the Dark Sun slams into Tordek’s vision as the crowd roars in response. There is a well armored human with a shaved scalp and topknot on a balcony overlooking the arena spitting insults at Watapon Ford down below in the arena sand.

Illiene rushes out from nowhere and grins excitedly. “Isn’t this exciting? We’ve been offered a formal challenge from Stonetide! So he’s a Warlord and about twice as seasoned as Watapon. However his trainer has agreed this fight will not be to the death, well shouldn’t be really, and the price for winning is 100 cp.”

Interesting, I say we go for it and tell Wart to put his Cash in Unstoppable. I'm wondering if we can make this more of a fair fight. Perhaps we could arrange a two on one match to even the odds, maybe offer to make the match a to the death one if he agrees.

lvl4 vs lvl2 to the death? Pretty much means Ustoppable will die. 2v1 to the death we could maybe use Kr'ktt to grapple him and then bash him to death but he's still lvl 4 ffs. One good roll on that warhammer (and he's gonna have one, he's a tank, he's just gotta sit and wait) and we're short of a (reasonably expensive) galdiator with nothing to show for it. Maybe 2v1 to unconciousness or just duck the match altogether.

All are possible ways to find out a man's strengths and weaknesses'

After much hemming and hawing you get a contract that the game by all intention should be to unconciousness. If your gladiator dies the opposing manager is willing to pay 70% of your purchase price.

Illiene says it seems fair. After all, death really can't be totally ruled out. For either of your parties.

The arena is in a hush. Only the crunch of sand under the sandals of the exhausted gladiators and their labored breathing pierces the quiet. There is a final defiant scream of rage from Watapon and the sword rises up and then comes down with the sound of shattering bone.

None can say if the blade hit home that day. None could say they saw it miss. Regardless, Stontier gasped clutching the sucking purple wound on his chest and fell to the earth, unconscious and defeated.

Watapon 'Unstoppable' Ford slowly and laboriously rose from his knees to the chanting of a thousand voices crying his name.

The name, of a burgeoning legend.
