    >First time running a quest, but what the hell. Gotta learn somehow.

    tl;dr version of intro: http://pastebin.com/QaiyPbsP

The Empire thought the most powerful battle station the galaxy had ever seen would crush the Rebellion movement once and for all. For a time it appeared they would be proven right. The Death Star, as it was known then, obliterated the Rebel high command on fourth moon of Yavin with a superlaser blast of unimaginable power. Left isolated and directionless, once troublesome insurrectionist movements across the galaxy collapsed and faded from view. Freed from the spectre of constant war, the Emperor's servants toiled to realize the most ambitious visions of his New Order. Peace and prosperity flourished as never before. For a brief time, the galaxy was enthralled by the dream of a better future.

No one foresaw how utterly that dream would soon be shattered. On the fifth anniversary celebrations of their defeat, the Rebels returned to carry out the unthinkable. A small band of infiltrates overrode the navigation systems of the Justice Star, the mobile throne world of the Empire, and crashed it into the surface of Coruscant. The Emperor, Supreme Commander Darth Vader, the Grand Admirals, and countless other officials and ordinary citizens were vaporized in an instant. Over three hundred billion sentients on the surface would perish in the next ten days. In those dark times, the people of the Empire were united in grief.

How a small band of fanatics managed to seize control of the most well guarded battle station in the Imperial Navy may be a question no one will ever be able to fully answer. But what happened next was clear for all to see. Hundreds of surviving Moffs and Admirals, no longer bound by the Emperor's guidance or the fear of censure, counted on their subordinates to hold greater loyalty to the commanding officer than to the ideals of the Empire. Many coveted the title of Galactic Emperor for themselves, while others were content to carve out their own domain and pillage the worlds under their care to their heart's content. Compounding the turmoil of the warlord successor states, what emerged as the new central Imperial authority respond with a haphazard suppression campaign that led to far more death and destruction than Imperials brought back into the fold. Alliances of convenience shifted from day to day, and the galaxy was once again plunged into chaos.

You are Captain Farlander, commander of the Imperial star destroyer Ravenous. Here in Dantus, one of the few outer rim sectors to remain loyal to Imperial Center, people watch the distant proclamations of Lord Director Yularen with wry amusement. The de-facto leader of both the newly consolidated Imperial Intelligence Bureau and the Empire at large is keen to voice grandiose assurances to the masses, while cynical onlookers bet on the inevitable day of his assassination. Meanwhile, you have more than enough troubles in your own backyard to keep you occupied. Serving as a Captain in the local sector fleet has become much more "interesting" in the years following the Coruscant catastrophe. Your superior, Moff Nerrei Aedo, was never the megalomaniacal sort, but neither was he particularly capable. He remained loyal to Imperial Center largely out of inertia more than any doctrinal reasons. The last you saw of him, he was holed up at his private hunting resort and refusing to put up even slightest pretense of actually doing his job. That left you and your fellow officers to patrol the increasingly lawless space lanes with everything in constant short supply. And now there's talk among the captains of impending hostilities from the Exigency, a neighbouring warlord state.

Limited read only interface with ship computer system due to hardcoded restrictions. Upgrade to direct interface requires overhaul of operating system. Projected time for self modification: 2 years, 54 days, 9 hours. +/-.6%

You are currently on patrol in the Ortiza system, a quiet backwater of little interest. While calculating the odds of a successful engagement with pirate forces with your current resources, your ship receives a distress call. The communications officer tells you it's sent from Rumi's Star, a neighbouring system. Audio only.

"... of the Strike Cruiser Ephemera to all Loyalist ships. We are under attack by Exigent... heavy damage. Request immediate..."

There is a long pause of static, then the woman's voice comes back.

"... back online right now! We're not going anywhere without it. Stabilize the aft..."

The signal cuts out. Somehow you think you weren't supposed to hear the second part. Commander Vosk, your executive officer, furrows his brow in thought.

"Whoever they are, it sounds like the Exigency's gunning for them hard. Either their drives or their nav-com has taken a hit. Captain, a rescue mission may not be feasible."

"Cruiser attempting jump to hyperspace." You vocalize.

Vosk agrees, "Yes sir. If they make the jump while we're rushing in, we'll end up flying right past each other and we'll be in the ones getting ambushed. Most likely the ship will have escaped or lost the fight by the time we get there."

Rumi's Star is a hypergiant surrounded by intense solar winds. There's no other patrol nearby. A skilled captain might be able to outmaneuver their enemies in that environment for the entire two hours you'd need to reach the system, but it's definitely a long shot. Action?

One of the things we need to resupply most on are Ties.

A single Squadron of standard Eyeballs isn't going to do much, we need to procure some Intercepters or Defenders. An Imperial-Class can carry 72 TIES after all, a full Wing.

TIE Droids might also be a possible solution if pilots prove to be problematic to come by. A secondary possibility might be to hire on some Mercenaries. Disgraceful, but it might be necessary.

Bombers aren't as much of a concern since we have a whole squadron of Gunboats.

What do the Armored Units entail, and do we have any Storm Trooper Legions on board?

You prepare the ship for combat, analyzing every possible scenario with the limited information you have.

Your calculations do nothing to prepare you for the sight that greets you around Rumi's Star. At first you think it is a sensor glitch, but as your optics scan the viewport, it is no mistake.

The star is surrounded by dozens of civilian shuttles and freighters of all models. Most of them are desperately fleeing the scene of battle between the Ephemera and an Exigency Imperial-I star destroyer, but at least six armed freighters are also fighting by the cruiser's side. Both sides have scrambled all fighters. Despite their assistance, the cruiser is heavily damaged and clearly outgunned.

You are receiving a transmission from the Exigency star destroyer.

    (cont.)

No ship seems to be attempting to flee the system.

At least they're brave enough to stand and fight.

Answer the comms, but be wary for electronic warfare.

Does electronic warfare even exist in Star Wars?

In any case, charge turbolasers and prepare to ALPHA STRIKE the Exigency vessel. Or even better, see if we can cripple it, capture it, and add it to our holdings.

If we play our cards right, we could get the cruiser's crew into our debt and add them to the fleet. Slowly but surely, we will restore order to the galaxy.

Even if we have to choke the shit out of it.

This is Captain Valin of the Star Destroyer Hierarch. Maintain current course and heading. We are conducting an internal security operation. You may depart or observe, but do not approach for your own safety.

The Hierarch transmits a security code that grants them permission to pursue fugitives across their boarders, approved by fleet command. The code is extremely hard to fake, especially for anyone short of your abilities, but the captain's voice clearly indicate attempt at subterfuge. Either he's lying, or he's keeping something from you.

Well, considering the Empire pretty much fell apart, those codes are probably easy to get with a few bribes.

Do we have any kind of authentication passphrases we can ask him? Also contact the Ephemera.

"Loyalist" might pertain to the planet's populace, not necessarily the Empire. We shouldn't engage until we have a clear understanding of the situation.

Local hyperwave communications node is down. Passive scans of data backlog shows shutdown occured 5.2 hours ago. Your ship has transmitters that can send messages to nearby systems, but long distance communications and access to the galactic holonet requires going through the grid. The grid itself is almost impervious to direct attack since all the hardware is suspended in hyperspace.

No hostile signal received by comms. Electronic warfare avenues of attack traditionally do not involve ship to ship communications, since the receiver needs to manually run any hostile programs.

You can't reach the Ephemera or any of the other ships. The cruiser is heavily damaged but _none_ of the other ships are transmitting.

Security codes from sector fleet command should technically be secure for local use. The Exigency captain seems to be counting on this, since your request for further authorization is flustering him badly.

"We... sent the codes. We have the right to be here. Maintain distance." he repeats almost droid like.

Commander Vosk's heartbeat is racing. "This doesn't make any sense," he says. "Why are they conducting this operation alone, without any of our ships to keep an eye on them? And the civilians movements are making no sense. There's no way this is a legit op. That cruiser isn't going to last much longer. Assuming those other ships don't turn on us, we'll be evenly matched in a firefight. Should we launch fighters?"

Valin is shocked to see you weren't some kind of trick when you spoke to him, and that you really are a droid. He tells you there isn't one and pleads for mercy. He says the virus rewrites itself with every infection. Ships could be inoculated beforehand, but there's no common cure to purge the virus for two even slightly different computer systems.

Strap him to that interrogator's chair that Vader used in the movies, and set some of those torture droids on him. The little orbs full of needles and drugs.

And then kill him for making such a virus without a antivirus. Fucking moron.

Have our techs inoculate the Ravenous' computer systems and all computer systems under our command so that we can at least access the holonet and long range communications.

"Your pleas are not befitting an Imperial command officer.
"You will stay in detention until such time as you can be transferred to a military prison or a court marshal can be convened. Until then, you shall be treated as outlined in Section 3 of Article 4 and Article 111 of the Uniform Code of Imperial Military Justice."

You order Major Madine to prepare the prisoner for interrogation. Contrary to your earlier analysis, the major doesn't seem to object in the slightest.

    Valin's screams become hoarse.

"No, no, please! I'll tell you anything you want! I was just following orders!"

The warbling harmonics from his overtaxed vocal cords floods your audio receptors. It's all rather pitiful.

Do you have any further questions for him or do you just want him tortured?

Demand to know the operational plans of the Exigency; where are they planning to attack and when, with what forces.
Why was the Hierarch in this system pursuing the Ephemera. What were they after on that cruiser?

I'm against executing him now; we adhere to Imperial Navy regulations about how to treat prisoners.

Demand the tactical and strategic details behind this infection; the Exigency was likely planning a followup invasion.

Demand to know why the Hierarch was pursuing the Ephemera.

Test the inoculation on a stand-alone computer before using it on the Ravenous' main computer system.

After much sputtering, the captain presents a somewhat clear picture of what happened.

Captain Valin belonged to a sizable Exigency task force sent against your sector's fleet command at Procca Major. Their mission was to upload the virus to the local hyperwave comm grid, causing a communications blackout isolating all defending warships, they were then to pick off the fleet piecemeal and maintain a blockade around the planet while a second task group did the same at the sector capital of Dantus. That group was after Moff Aedo.

He doesn't know anything more about the virus except that his superiors were very excited about it. When his task group jumped to the planet, one ship inexplicably was not fully disabled. He was sent to pursue while the rest of the task group mopped up. He assumed it was just another defender.

Apparently the virus disables nav-comms immediately on naval ships while it lies dormant for a few jumps on civilian vessels, allowing it to spread faster across sectors.

He'd like to blabber on, if he weren't passed out. The medic recommends against reviving him immediately. Seems the captain has a latent heart condition.

The enemy fleet at Procca Major may grow concerned soon without a message back.

The science officers have retrieved a working inoculation from the Hierarch and have deployed it on all systems.

"Major, return Captain Valint to his cell.
"Major Madine, how well do you believe we could craft a fake transmission to the Exigency fleet at Procca Major? The communication would originate from the Hierarch, and report that the escaping vessel has been destroyed but that the Hierarch's hyperdrive has been disabled.
"Such a course of action should allow us more time to clean out the rest of the civilian ships."

Next, we need to meet with Major Pax.

    What is her mission?
Why was the Ephemera able to resist the virus?

Major Pax is being hounded by a medical droid to start her bacta treatment. She is reluctant to speak at first, but after making sure she's not going crazy and you really are a droid captain, she starts answering your questions.

"My mission? I don't have any more missions. Not after this. Imperial Center desperately wants something in the unknown regions, and to get it they were willing to make a deal with the devil. The IIB gave your enemies the Leviathan virus out of expediency. I tried to stop them, but I was too late. I'm sorry.

"If your ship is still operational, then there may be a slim hope for your sector. But we can't stay here for long. Get your people to safety. The Dantus sector depends on this ship."

    >end of session 1. Thanks for playing. see you all maybe for a bit tomorrow, most likely tuesday.
