Does anyone know when the next Planes and Mercs update is coming?

Also, I was looking at Air War 21C (the system used), and was wondering if there's been a more detailed adaptation of the planes made. I saw that the F-15C and F-15E Strike Eagle were given the same stats and was not amused.

There's also the part where I really want to play instead of GM it, but I'd bite the bullet if I could get players.

You know... I could run Planes & Mercs as a quest, if there were interested players. I might put a major twist to things, but I've run some quests before and they were very well received.

That assumes, of course, that /tg/ would be interested. I know we have quite a few quests as it is (especially with the recent flood of 40k related ones). If you'd like me to give it a shot, say so.

As totally fucking excited as I would be to have this be true, I've a couple of issues.

    1) fa/tg/uys will be falling over each other to play "Baron" or the main dude. So probably best to run it like a squad management quest similar to Zeonquest.
    2) Exactly how good of a questfag do you think you are? Because if you fuck this up, we will hate you and you will hate yourself more.
    3) It will never be Mercs and Planes because you're not Steve and don't run wetworks for DOD or what-have-you and are therefor not a god. Not a criticism, I just think you shouldn't try to replicate that. Maybe something closer to Ace Combat?

    1) I haven't partaken in Zeonquest (Gundam wasn't something I was exposed to while growing up). I'll see about looking into it. I was actually thinking about /tg/ taking the part of an automated piloting system that could be hooked into the cockpit of existing airframes, with intent to have a computerized hivemind squadron making use of already built fighters. Thanks to a glitch, self awareness develops. It could work out like this pic.
    2) I run Doppleganger Damacy (which has been on a bit of hold lately thanks to internet shenanigans, and keeping the same time zone after moving halfway round the world, making it very difficult to slot times that the usual crowd can make). People seem to like it. I've run some other things too that people have enjoyed, though it seems not to the same extent. Myself? I see continual opportunity to learn and improve, and note various people who I believe are clearly better than me (StonerDM, of Bloodquest and AlchemyQuest notoriety, for instance).
    3) It could be that. I'm flexible.

I'm a little hesitant about doing this with Doppleganger Damacy still unfinished, but if I ran it during times that were good for me, it would be doable. I make no promises about doing this, but it's an option.

Hmmm... reading this again, I have to wonder: too big a suspension of disbelief, having an AI like that? The rest of the quest would otherwise be pretty grounded, if abstracted in some parts to keep things from taking too long on my end (though I HAVE done some distance mapping already, and cross-referencing to various aircraft's maximum combat radiuses).

And to clarify: that pic, or maybe this one, as another example--that's your character. All of them, at once.

System would be a modded AW21C, mixed with one called Android.

    >>12372859
I've been doing a lot of campaign preplanning, and a pilot wasn't something I figured on. Human wingmen, yes. Humans that need to be coordinated, even bargained, with to ensure that you keep getting the precious fuel and maintenance to keep you airborne (not to mention runway use, AGI use to keep you powered when engines are cold, a crew to load ammunition onto your racks--cause you don't have hands)? Yes. Humans on the ground that need support or can provide it, yes. I figure that time on the ground will end up as important as time in the air.

It's been a while since I played it, so I could be missing quite a lot.
AC Zero: The Belkan War had medals that could be unlocked, like achievements, for things like number of kills, number of kills with guns, how many times you protected your wingman, and whether you completed the game as one of the 3 Ace types.
Also, whenever you shot down a named enemy ace, or their squadron, you unlocked their emblem in the trophy room. It gave you a quick run-down of who the person was, what they were like, and how they died at your hands or somehow miraculously survived their encounter with the Demon Lord.

Dang, this seems good. If I could run it on weekdays about 7 hours earlier than now, things would be perfect and the threads would appear like hotcakes on the grittle. 5 hours earlier than now on Fridays/weekends for starting each thread works too... though everyone will be waking up no matter which I do. Such is the problem of having a US player base when your clock is half a world ahead. Heck, Doppleganger Damacy requires me to get up earlier than 7 on my Saturday if I'm going to run it for the normal crowd. Any suggestions on this note?

I'll start doing the prep needed to convert things. Don't expect it to start earlier than 2 weeks from now though, paying work is keeping me tasked and there's quite a bit that needs changing to convert it from a 3-person RL game to a /tg/ quest, especially if I'm to bring my A-game. Also, for those wanting an Ace Combat bent, what ideas/cool things/themes/etc specifically would you like incorporated from it?

    Take it easy, /tg/.

Give us an AWACs plane. I don't know if we should be the AWACs Operator, or the squadron, but we need someone who gives us the orders and in-mission updates.
Hawk Eye, Sky Eye, Eagle Eye, Thunderhead, and Oka Nieba.
Enemy Ace squadrons in addition to the mooks.

I don't know if it should take place in Strangereal, this world, or a setting of your own making, though.

Duly noted. If you nab an AWACS and install a control box in it, you'll be able to fly it, but handling all the equipment inside, not so much. Not in the stereotypical E-3 at least; but that's far from the only EW/C2 aircraft out there, and it's not likely you'd be flying alone (your call as players, of course). Don't forget communications with the ground, too.
Enemy aces is something I'll keep in mind. I even have a very valid idea, now.

If we're going with the distributed hivemind squadron idea, then the AWACs should be human-crewed and operated, and act as both our in-mission support and handler.

Since we're going to be the squadron, you'll want to flesh out the other characters we'll interact with. Much of the later Ace Combats are as much about the people surrounding the Main Ace and how they interact with the player.
So the AWACs commander, the chief mechanic of our mechanical support team, lead programmer for our IT support staff, the commander of our unit, and maybe even other human pilots of our squadron if its not completely automated.

That sounds like the branching storylines from AC3, perhaps incorporating the branching missions of AC5 and the (Soldier, Mercenary, Knight) scoring system from AC0.

Branching storylines are one thing, but I don't plan out a plot. I get the setting, initial NPCs, and scenario drafted, and let the players loose. Then the wrench throwing begins.

I hadn't thought about achievements and scoring prior to you saying so though, and you've given me some ideas for implementing it that I'll have to ponder on a bit more. I think you're right, though, it would add to the quest to have them.

You could have both in-game and OOC trophies and achievements.
We're an AI, right? So they must have come up with some kind of scoring system and metric for our progress. So that achievements for flight time unaided by human control, kills, special maneuvers used, and so on. OOC trophies could be things like small bio's of aces we've downed, and more humorous achievements unlocked.

What's that? $8000 for an hour in a Buccaneer? I have that much, even enough for that and the flight to get there/back?

Dammit, you beautiful British bomber, why must you tempt me so?

Any idea yet on what type of missions we'll be flying early on?

    AtA? AtG? Multirole?
That will definitely have an impact on our starting airframe (along with availability ofcourse)

Also: I take it range on those boxes and their data transmission is limited? Otherwise we could just put some processor boxes in an AWACS or one in a U-2 circling way outside the enemy's range

Been busting my ass on my project- modified maintenance (AGAIN!), still working on weapons pages. Getting the aircraft ready to play is on the back burner, so I have a slowly-lengthening list on my hands there.
