Hey, fa/tg/uys. Exactly what the pic says. I'd prefer to remain anonymous, since GW frowns on people leaking relevant information to the masses like this, so don't expect me to name names or anything, but I will answer some questions if you've got any. I'm aware of the pretty intense hate for GW despite our work, and, trust me, NOT my decision to do a lot of the stuff you guys complain about.
    >> Anonymous 10/09/10(Sat)16:52 No.12386325

However, I'll answer questions relevant to the fluff, and inner workings of GW.

    >> Anonymous 10/09/10(Sat)17:01 No.12386383
Well, for one, it's not like I can prove myself to you guys, so anything I do can easily be refuted, and thus I can be called out on it, even though it's the real deal. This IS 4chan. Besides, if I reveal my identity, I could LOSE MY FUCKING JOB.

Anyways, with this in mind, I ask you, even if this IS a prank, it's not like it's going to hurt you guys, is it? Now, moving on.

The higher-ups hate Epic because it doesn't sell as well as the main game. Yes, they're the money-grubbing bastards you've been led to believe they are, but on the flipside, the company's had to do a few minor layoffs for some of it's lesser-known writers and employees lately. Even with the money of the 13-year-olds the staff here are constantly told to cater to, we're hemoragging money like no tomorrow. If the company goes belly-up in the next fiscal year, or otherwise needs to have some intellectual property sold, I won't be surprised.

Not associated with the codex lineup myself, but a coworker tells me the new Inquisition codex is slated for sometime after the Necron codex, which is set for release in 2011. So, y'know, fingers crossed.

Gray Knights will be getting their own codex, from what my coworker tells me. No word on a release date, so that's all up in the air.

Believe it or not, there ARE a few plans to further 40k fluff. We're finally getting the picture that some of the fans would like to see something of interest happen, and we don't want a clusterfuck like the Eye of Terror campaign.

That's in the works; As much as I want to spoil it for you guys, I'll just say 'yes' and move on.

A lot of the bottom-level folks here aren't fans.

    That's putting it lightly.

It's not so much a big money-eater as it is a bunch of little ones, and not enough income to really cover everything that they're trying to do. It's not that there's some big costly project(except MAYBE the Ultramarines movie), so much as 'we don't have enough customers because they keep walking away from the hobby before even starting.'

Yeah, that was my boss's bad.

    He regrets it every day.

RT/DH is all done by FFG, so we actually don't have a big hand in that. Guys like me occasionally need to tell them 'hey, this needs a bit of tweak, here's what REALLY happens when THIS happens.' That kind of thing. They usually get it right.

Well, right around the time 40k stopped being 'tongue-in-cheek' and started getting GRIMDARK, they saw fit to remove the Squats. They wanted people to start taking the fluff a bit more seriously, and possibly a little in-depth. The removal of Squats is one thing I never really got, but it's office-policy to not discuss them.

The 'missing Primarchs' have been the subject of a lot of debate among the writers. A few want to flesh 'em out, others want to say 'let's leave it ambiguous for the fans to fill in the blanks and speculate. That's always fun for them'

Personally, I'm in the 'let the fans fill in the blanks' camp. A few ideas were a Primarch who wanted to go out of his way to annihilate the Necron threat after discovering a Tomb World back during the Horus Heresy, but he could never get the word out to the Big E before Horus fucked everything up.

With the recent intent to advance 40k's 'plot', there has been some discussion of a new race or two, but nothing solid yet.

SoB and Inquisition are confirmed to be in the same Codex, but Sisters will be fieldable as a competitive army, capable of functioning on their own. Inquisition will be the same way; They're basically getting rules to allow them to function as allies, and be efficient at it. Both options will be totally viable.

Oh, the AdMech will be getting A LOT of attention, sometime in the next couple of years. Again, I want to spoil it for you, but they'll come up more than once, and that's all I can say.

Is the intention in codex design to keep the Imperial armies always slightly superior to Chaos and Xenos in the tabletop game?

The lackluster Tyranid codex and "ally" rules popping up and allowing, say, Guard to cover its weaknesses (lack of psychic defence etc) seems to imply that much.

Gav is one of the ones that the staff really like. Dan's up there too, and I've actually spoken with him at length about a small series of Guard novels focusing on another regiment besides the Tanith. The reason we keep letting Ward and Goto write for us is because they're actually under contract to write a few more books for the line.

My own pet theory was that the Emperor's physical body would die and he would ascend to Warp Deity status, with the Segmentum Solar becoming analogous to the Eye of Terror (but with angelic daemons instead of abyssal ones). As the Emperor slowly dies, however, the Astronomicon weakens and the outer majority of the Imperium is lost.

Someone once told me their idea that a Living Saint was basically a Daemon Prince, but was empowered by the Emperor and hence pleasing to the human soul.

The Vostroyan writers have no plans in motion. Sorry, Vostroyanfriend.

Dying, and going to die. Star Child theory is NOT in effect, here.

We're gonna throw the fanbase a curve ball for that one.

That was something a lot of the writers around here wanted to do behind closed doors, but the higher-ups vetoed it for the purposes of avoiding the alienation of the Fantasy fanbase.

A lot of writers on both sides liked the idea, but they had to be party-poopers.

There's actually going to be a bit about Demiurgs in the next Tau codex.

You know how the Tau couldn't travel so fast through space because of their lack of Warp navigation?

    Yeah, guess what?

The more grimdark and super-serious a setting gets, the more potential there is for ironic humor. I just think that comic relief should come from funny things that characters say and do, and not because one whole faction (looking at you, Greenskins) is one great big running joke. Trying to grimdarkify something that big in order to make it fit the setting just backfires, and the whole thing is debased into schizophrenic silliness where we can't decide whether to laugh at how fucking stupid they are, or be afraid because their ramshackle (and fucking stupid) technology works for no reason.

Rowboat wakes up and marches to Terra with the Ultramarines, the High Lords rejoice at the sight of a Primarch and give him his old Lord Commander of the Imperium post back, making him the de facto leader of Mankind.

This is what he had planned since Heresy.

Eventually, he decides to get rid of the last possible obstacle in his way, and marches with his Ultramarines into the Throne Room.

After a massive battle between the Ultramarines and the Custodes, Roboute is the only one standing. He smashes the Gauntlets of Ultramar (picked up from Calgar's corpse) into the Emperor's carcass, but at the very moment the impact shatters the Throne, Emperor reaches out with the last bit of his strength, tearing Guilliman's soul out of his body and dragging it into oblivion with him.

I sort of hope so... because the Ultramarines with their successor chapters control an entire fucking sector. And the successors would then either fight alongside their blue lieges, or say "fuck this" and go do their own thing.

Hopefully this means that the Codex Astartes will cease to be followed in general, in stead of by just a few chapters. I agree with Guilliman's intent to limit the political power of the legions, but the Ultramarines worked around that pretty soundly anyway, and the Imperium needs as many space marines as it can get.

There's going to be a lot of 'Ork-style' improvised gear for Enclave Fire Warriors. Expect to see Earth Caste Combat Engineers, and Heavy Weapon Teams ala the Imperial Guard for the Farsight Enclave Infantry.

Cypher will be a bad guy. NOT my idea. I don't like it. A and O will be personally responsible for killing Guilliman. The Tau surge will result in Ultramarines being called in from Ultramar to go deal with it.

This is because A and O speak with Tau Ethereals behind closed doors, and convinced them to let the Demiurgs do their thing.

This will be followed by the Alpha Legion heading RIGHT FOR FUCKING ULTRAMAR and taking Guilliman out.

For those of you saying this guy MUST be a troll because the stuff he's saying is so ridiculous and/or implausible, ask yourselves this:

Is it ANY more ridiculous and/or implausible than the stuff which GW has ACTUALLY PUBLISHED up until this point? Think about how hard you would have 0/10'ed if, prior to it being canon, someone had shown up here dropping hints about the Blood Angels teaming up with the Necrons against the Tyranids. There wouldn't have been enough trollface in the world to respond to that, and yet.

Not saying this guy IS telling the truth, mind you, just that "That can't be true because GW would never do that!" doesn't seem like a very compelling argument in light of their track record.

    >Whilst the other Dark Angels fought to escape the Alpha Legion’s sudden ambush, Azrael cut down the last of his enemies and plucked up the banner. As he did so, a massive armoured figure strode through the smoke, his ancient power armour decorated with blasphemous runes and the heretical eight-pointed star of Chaos Undivided. Arkos himself charged Azrael. As he did so an Assault Marine launched himself into Arkos’ path, only to be cut clean in two by the stroke of the Chaos champion’s warp-powered blade. The two mighty heroes clashed. In one hand Azrael held the Sacred Standard of Devastation, in the other the Sword of Secrets. The two rained smashing blows upon each other's armour, until blood seeped through the joints of Azrael’s suit of artificer armour. The weight of Arkos’ mighty blows had wounded the Supreme Grand Master. Both summoned up every ounce of strength, but Arkos had the combined power of the four Chaos gods with him this day. Chanting a litany to his gods, Arkos’ blows forced Azrael ever backwards, weakening his opponent until a shoulder charge and a fast, low sweeping cut sent Azrael sprawling to the ground, the Sword of Secrets skittering from his grasp. Prone amongst the rubble, the banner still clutched to him, Azrael saw death approaching. Arkos loomed over him. The Chaos champion laughed in triumph and raised his Darkblade for the killing blow.

    >Arkos’ main weapon is a Dark Blade, a gift from the gods for his long service.

    >This is because A and O speak with Tau Ethereals behind closed doors, and convinced them to let the Demiurgs do their thing.

I thought at least one of the Alpharius/Omegon pair was confirmed dead at the end of the heresy, by Guilliman's own hand.

I know the Alpha Legion is good at having people pretend to be their primarch and stuff, but there's no way they successfully conned another primarch into thinking he'd killed his own brother when he hadn't.

The Imperium's learned it's lesson about the Tau and isn't about to let them drive forward with Demiurg-navigated ships. This is part of what's up with the AdMech. We're still discussing what to do with Calgar. We're thinking of having him be offed right along with Rowboat, and making the Ultramarines some kind of desperate, dirty-fighting Space Marine chapter. Ward is NOT happy with this, but the Ultramarines will end up either irrelevant, or a bit better for it all as far as fan-reactions go.

Well, for one, the outer worlds of the Imperium will fracture into smaller kingdoms, with the worlds closer to Cadia, Terra, and the like all remaining under Imperial control. The Astronomicon is something we're still discussing, but we have a few ideas for how it could remain active.

In the very first Codex I ever owned, "Angels of Death", the only awesomeness that I took with me was Cypher and the Fallen Angels. Deathwing were cool, but Cypher was cooler as I always pictured him as a "good guy secretly being a bad guy", never drawing his sword, appearing randomly but always connected with some grander scheme - and on his way to motherfucking Terra with a sword he never took out the scabbard.

He works MUCH better as a character that's Pro-Imperium than Anti-Imperium. There's too much Chaos and GRIMDARK in 40k.

For one thing, I'm no ultrafag but I really don't like the idea of the chapter being smacked about just because of a overcompensating reaction to the "spiritual liege" stuff. It just seems so petty and clumsy.

Look, the Imperium's been around for ten thousand years - that's a lot of history. Can't we take a look back at that instead of doing iffy and divisive things with the modern Imperium? That's what they WANT you to think.

Seriously, the Emperor isn't really the reason why the Warp Gods haven't spilled over into reality yet. There's a few reasons, but the Emperor isn't on the list.

He's nothing more than a psychic lighthouse on life support, and that life support's breaking down.

Grey Knights will not be changing a whole lot. Fodder soldiers will include units from the Ordo Hereticus who can be added as allies, so for the most part, they'll be a small army of 'Holy Shit What Just Happened' all over your enemy's face.

Hey, I said the Emperor dies.

I didn't say what happens next. We've been kicking a few ideas around. The Imperium will make a comeback later, and re-absorb all those lost worlds. We MIGHT fall back on the Star Child theory after all, but for right now, we've written that off. We've confirmed the Emperor will die, and something will happen to keep the core worlds of the Imperium together.

Either way, the Imperium will make a comeback. We're still discussing how. In fact, give me some ideas, I'll pitch them to the others.

Couple of new models. There's that Tomb Stalker, but that's a Forge World model. We're going back to the Necrons' original inspiration for some model ideas, breaking out Ancient Egypt for inspiration. There won't be huge numbers of new models, but there's going to be a few.

Hell, I thought the only reason that the Ultras held so much Imperial space is because they were the sole Imperial presence so far out on the Eastern Fringe, and needed to be self sufficient to hold their ground?

Well if I had suggest the Emperor becomes a type of Chaos God to associated with things like order and honour, kind of a typical bible feel to him. If the Imperium has to shrink then at least just have it shrink West rather than the whole Imperium fading into this bitch ass tiny little Empire like the Tau or something. The way I see it the writers just want to turn the Imperium into a Rome.

You want some ideas for the outer worlds to come back to the Imperium?

How about the subtle influence of the Inquisition? They infiltrate the self-styled kingdoms and together (all the outer sectors) they try slowly merged the kingdoms together, and then back into the Imperium.

It might take years upon years, but the Inquisitor is big, and Inquisitors are known to live longer than most other men, no?

I don't know anything about the warhams except what I've managed to pick up from various /tg/ threads. Basically I want to play the game, but I refuse to put together and paint the little mans because I have fat sausage fingers attached to hands that have done real work. Having said that, I have a few questions:

for the alleged insider: is there any chance of gw making a game to woo someone like me, who wants to play but doesn't want to fuck with all the bullshit model construction?

for probably any random warham fan: I've always wondered two things. So even with my casual knowledge of warhammer, it seems pretty obvious that blizzard just rips off ever single thing from gw. Has gw ever made any kind of official statement about this?

Also, what is life like for, say, the average non-warring human? Or in the grim dark future of grimdark, is there only war?

So the Emperor dies, who becomes leader? Why would people stick to the Imperium if the Emperor is dead? It doesn't explain a lot of things to me, honestly. Per example Imperial warriors have the ability to bless their weapons that can effect deamons, and the Imperial Aquila can burn them much like a Christian cross (Eisenhorn series and Horus Heresy series), I think the Emperor must have some sort of God like powers otherwise you're going to create a lot of damn holes in your progression.

The current 40k is stuck with no progression, this leaves writers to make current history as rich as possible and it kind of looks like you'd throw a lot of that away and disregard it by just going "lol Emp dead" despite the amount of lore that explains or talks about what might/will happen if the Emperor did indeed die.

So yeah, awesome ideas all around for how the Imperium could reunify. Thanks for that, I'll run it by the rest of the writing staff.

We're trying to make it a fall-from-grace. They end up needing to break all the rules their leader made so that the chapter can survive.

Like I said, we're bouncing around plans to somehow allow the Imperium to reunify and keep the Astronomicon running and everything. Not too sure on the Emperor himself.

The Inquisition will be covered in three seperate codices.

Dark Eldar, Necrons, and then so on from there.

How badly did Games Workshop screw up when they realized they put 10,000 Adepta Sororitas in the entire Imperium with their terrible recent fluff? Then stated in the same paragraph, that they were at every battle. Assuming all 10,000 are Militant Sisters (which they are not), this accounts for maybe one Sister per planet. What, you think that's stupid? We've had this planned for a while. There's a reason he's called Eliphas the INHERITOR. Between this, the spectacular failure of the thirteen Black Crusades, and Failbaddon's track record, the Chaos Gods are taking a bit of an offense to their champion having no arms.

Basically, the idea was that, at some point, the High Lords thought it would be a good idea to pack up the Imperium's shit and get the hell out of Dodge. So they built a ship of fuck-huge proportions (and I mean fuck-huge: it's big enough that the ship is piloted by Holy Terra, that moves around the bridge on rails; and the ship is powered by multiple Dyson Spheres) and are basically drifting the universe to.... I forget why they're drifting through space, but basically to get away from Chaos. Of course, Orks and 'Nids managed to sneak along for the ride (via spores and Genestealers), but the presence of Chaos is vastly diminished, though a section of the ship could fall to Chaos and it be years before anyone even notices. However, faith powers not unlike those the SoB use start cropping up more often, due to the entire Imperial cult being on one ship and in close(ish) proximity to the Emperor.

I'm pretty sure I left out some details (I think there was something about a couple of Webway gates accidentally being used in part of the construction) so feel free to correct me if I missed anything important.

Oh, and The Ship is all. The Ship moves.

We intend to bring that back. That's bugged the crap out of a lot of us lately, and we want to try and bring it back to the tabletop.

Ethereals, sadly, will still be useless. On the side, only the Farsight armies will be getting heavy weapon teams. That's strictly a Farsight Enclaves innovation. Burst Cannons and some Fusion Blasters wielded by Fire Warriors will be something the Enclaves will be packing frequently.

No. The Farsight Enclaves will be fielding other Castes in place of alien auxiliaries. They're strictly Tau, and the fluff will explain their 'racism.' If you guys want to make a cliche Roman story, might as well do it properly. Why not make the Imperium come divided? >Since that day, there have been eleven separate Black Crusades, ranging from small raids to sector-spanning conflicts that have cost the lives of millions of Imperial soldiers. On the world of El’Phanor, the Despoiler exterminated the kin of the Kromarch and on Mackan, Abaddon earned the eternal hatred of the Blood Angels when he slew their warriors and violated their flesh. Beneath the Tower of Silence on Uralan, Abaddon was led to the daemon sword Drach’nyen by a golden-skinned stranger and with this cursed item, carved himself a realm of diabolical evil within the Eye of Terror before plunging the Gothic sector into war. Once more the Imperium was victorious, but the cost of victory was high and two of the Blackstone Fortresses, powerful weapons created in ancient times by long-forgotten hands, were lost to the Despoiler. Numerous other incursions, too scattered and random to be called Black Crusades have plagued the Cadian Sector and there can be no respite while this most evil of heretics still lives.

    >least threatening
Abaddon poses a greater threat than any other mortal servant of Chaos. No other lord of the Traitor Legions can garner the support he can. If all his Black Crusades are failures simply for not destroying the Imperium (which is only a long-term goal and not the immediate objective of every single attack), then all the various other factions that wish to control the galaxy (other Chaos Lords, Necrons/C'tan, Dark Eldar now as well apparently, etc.) are failures too.

And just for the sake of correctness, the actual quote is: "The Cadian known as Creed... his death is mine and mine alone to inflict. Is this understood?"

(According to that same battle report, Yarrick managed to take time off from hunting Ghazghkull to act as bait for Abaddon along with Creed and Stern and get himself killed by a Plaguereaper.)

    >> Anonymous 10/09/10(Sat)22:00 No.12389012

Abaddon posing more of a threat than any other mortal servant of Chaos speaks of Chaos' weakness as a threat to the Imperium. Daemonic infestation is a threat unrelated to him, and the Black Crusades have had an effect on extremely small areas. They have all been, as far as their effect goes, hit and run attacks with most of the losses regainable by Imperium. Not nearly of the same magnitude as invasions like that of Hive Fleets, of which every single one rendered innumerable worlds useless to the Imperium.

It is fallacious to place "toppling the Imperium" and "total irrelevance" as the only possible options for the enemy factions. Abaddon is, however, in the low end of the scale. He is also written as the most cliched villain imaginable, reminiscent of the likes of G1 Transformers Galvatron.

As for the Apocalypse rulebook Abaddon does have a "leave Creed to me" moment attributed to him, but Yarrick storywise has little to do with this book.

As it is, Abaddon is a cliched "dark lord" villain, his campaigns are unimpressive and his continued existence and de facto leadership of the CSM faction speaks against the capriciousness of his patrons. The setting is better off without him, and if GW could off Eldrad they can do the same to Abaddon.
    >> Anonymous 10/09/10(Sat)23:04 No.12389637
    >Daemonic infestation is a threat unrelated to him, and the Black Crusades have had an effect on extremely small areas. Not nearly of the same magnitude as invasions like that of Hive Fleets, of which every single one rendered innumerable worlds useless to the Imperium.
The Black Crusades haven't been about territorial gain/denial though, save for the 13th - and though it may be a comparatively small area, if Cadia falls, the hordes trapped within the Eye will be able to flood out in potentially limitless numbers and strike at the Imperium as they please. Not to mention the Necron codex describing the Gothic War as "ravaging an entire sector of hundreds of worlds and eliminating entire star systems in a fashion unseen since the War in Heaven", or Eldrad speaking of the 13th Black Crusade as a conflict the likes of which has not been seen since the Horus Heresy.

    >It is fallacious to place "toppling the Imperium" and "total irrelevance" as the only possible options for the enemy factions.
Never said those were the only options. But the examples given are factions who, like Abaddon, wish to see the Imperium gone, yet have not succeeded as yet. By the same logic applied when accusing Abaddon of failure, they too should be considered failures.
    >> Anonymous 10/09/10(Sat)23:26 No.12389850

The hordes trapped in the Eye have always been threatening to spill out, and if Cadia's capable of holding them they might not be that impressive after all. I also always found it rather silly how the old fluff writers tried to give Abaddon credibility in the form of a frightening superweapon, the Planet Killer, a ship famous because it is capable of essentially just performing an Exterminatus, an iconic Imperial internal security procedure.

The Necron codex's description is not the first time when the fluff is guilty of hyperbole. We've seen the aftereffects of Gothic War in practice, and the Imperium - not even Segmentum Obscuras - was shaken. The damage was restricted to Gothic Sector, Abaddon was pushed back and what he got for his trouble were the surviving Blacktone Fortresses.

Eldrad was also proven wrong in his predictions, even Cadia was not taken by the 13th crusade. It however established Creed's status as Abaddon's archnemesis, and that a warlord who has somehow survived ten millennia serving as the chosen of supposedly unpredictable and unforgiving gods would specifically demand to personally slay the cigar-smoking baseline human in a pompous old-school villain style.

The degree of Abaddon's success in comparison to any of the Hive Fleets or other threats of grave magnitude, and the peculiar nature of his character and faction, indeed justify calling him "General Failure" and the most cliched villain in the setting. His death, or fall from the Warmaster status, would not remove anything of worth from the setting, and potentially could only add to it.

    Abaddon is something
