8 KB Zerg Quest XVI Cerebrate Anon 10/13/10(Wed)21:10 No.12434786
There is silence. Terrible silence. We are alone. It is worse than before, with the Psi Disruptor. At least then, we had the buzzing to remind us that we were alive. Now?

    Nothing.

    Nothing.

    Noth--

"Executor, welcome to the battlefield that was once the province of Antioch."

A voice! The glorious sound of sentience! Oh, what a magical resonance it carries! We have been so long in the silence that we had forgotten even our own self.

"Templar Feneschal has bought us the homeworld with her very flesh. She may have betrayed us with her cowardly retreat, but she has repaid her debt to our kind a thousandfold with her sacrifice. Her name shall be kept in song forever."

Feneschal. We remember that name. Rage boils into us. Feneschal. That Protoss destroyed the Overmind.

"It has been four days since the Overmind was slain, and still the rampant Zerg in the air and on the surface tear our forces and their own apart in blood. One of the arbiter captains has calculated that the debris and organic matter from the battle overhead will tint the sky red for almost six hundred years!"

The battle...the battle of...Aiur! The Protoss have regained their homeworld from us, and murdered our Father! But how can we hear this? It would require us to have...

We sense the fingers of the fleshling. We have kept control of it after the loss of the Overmind! How? No matter. It shudders over the controls of the crippled carrier. Warning lights flash on every console. The ship has little left but communications.

The Overmind is dead, but we yet live. Can we endure in Its absence?

    >Big floating cellphone

A cell phone would be able to send. Currently, the circuitry indicates that we may not even be capable of that. Upon closer inspection, we find that we can hear...resonances...from the other dormant fleshlings on the ship. If this holds true for all of them...

We reach out to the crews of the ships over Char. We hear resonances. We reach out to the surviving fleshlings on Xenta. Resonance.

If we can figure out what woke this fleshling, we may be able to awaken the others. We had less than a hundred left at last count, and probably less now, but it would be a start!

Wow... We really screwed the universe up if the Protoss are united enough to fight the Zerg off of Auir after killing the Overmind. They had to abandon it in canon.

We cast about our own mind, as well as the fleshling's.

As far as we can tell, it "woke up" when it heard the voice. It's almost as if it were subconsciously aware of our need for a voice...any voice...to stabilize us.

Hoo-boy. We've had some zingers. Prematurely putting the Confederacy on alert, removing the Sons of Korhol's destabilizing influence from the Terrans, inadvertently convincing the Protoss in charge of their Warp network that the Battle of Aiur was lost, causing every able-bodied Protoss to be instantly recalled out to regroup...

And now, the Overmind is dead.

    >>12434935

Well... the whole thing about messing with Mengsk's plan to overthrow the Dominion really screwed up this timeline's events in comparison to the canon. The Dominion was supposed to have lost one of their strongest planets to the Zerg, and there was probably a TON of Terran infighting once Mengsk set his hostile takeover into motion. This resulted in preventing KINGSTOOOOOOOOON's death via nuclear bombardment and/or zergy claws.

Also, Daggoth was killed prior to the invasion of Aiur by the Dark Templar. That's one thing that might've just been alternate timeline hijinks writing and not any real fault of our own (to my knowledge). In the canon timeline, Daggoth survived well into the Brood War.

    Pfft. Such a defeatist attitude!

Think of it as this way: Cerebrate Anon could've just given us a carbon copy of the Starcraft storyline but with anon driving the main story for the Zerg, or just presented it with minor modifications (or even worse, a complete roflstomp of non-zerg forces).

Instead, we are given a storyline with its ups and downs. Some other quests that follow other certain shows'/games' storylines have had some points where the main Player-character force has taken losses, or even made things worse for their faction in the long run. Right now, we're in a very bad way.

But we now have a golden opportunity to re-invent the Zerg! We must EVOLVE! EVOLVE!! EEEEVOOOOOOLLLLVE!
    >> Anonymous 10/13/10(Wed)21:46 No.12435157
    >>12435069
Keep in mind that the UED in the canon storyline underestimated the sector, and sent a small fleet with older technology (so it could be compatible with the sector/blizzard didn't want to introduce too many new units for the terrans). It's true that the UED did amass a big fleet during Broodwars, but it was mostly confederate remnants.
Now, seeing 2 united strong powers, the Terran Confederacy and the Protoss, on the sector, I would expect the UED to send a big fleet with their newest technology to pacify the sector.
So yeah, we're doomed... Can we surrender and restart the campaign?.

Now seriously, considering that father did consider us, along Kerrigan, a success (even after our failures) we should scan our memories to see if there was a hidden message from father in case of his demise.

There are no recording devices. We improvise by dragging the dormant fleshlings to the comm panel. Nothing happens as the Protoss continue talking. This Fenix person appears to be commenting on what "worthy adversaries" we are.

We press one of the fleshlings' ears to the speaker. Nothing.

We fiddle with this resonance. It's like the wind blowing over the lip of a bottle in a garbage heap. We can tell the bottle is there, but the noise does not tell us where it is.

And we'd damn well better keep it that way.

Our next goal: create infiltrators, have them set the Confederacy and the Protoss against each other to buy us time to regroup.

Also, when we attempt to become the new Overmind, we do it smarter than the first: distributed network across the entire part of the swarm we control, instead of a giant stationary target. As the new Overmind, we would be a gestalt consciousness created by the minds of our Swarm, all members both individual and not individual at once.

Think like how the Geth work in ME (especially Legion), or Petey from Schlock Mercenary.

With the fleshling we already have, we can see the surrounding fleshlings, so we should try to focus ourselves on one of them. The message probably did nothing by itself, and it was our need to know what was happening what made us control the fleshling (the message just being a coincidence).
If that doesn't work, well I would guess we need to spawn more overlords, since our control would be a maximum of 1 without them. So try to focus on a hive.

Try to start up the brain of the fleshling. Allow it at least enough of a mind that it can supplement our psychic energy with its own. Then use the combined strength of both minds to reach out to the second fleshling. Lather, rinse, repeat until our consciousness is running on top of the minds of our fleshlings, with each of their mental voices adding to the psychic chorus that now forms our mind and soul.

For the 3rd fleshling... have it listen in to the Protoss conversation, if it is still going on. We need to know if they've made any significant headway on ousting the Zerg from Aiur, and if they've made any plans on conquering Zergworld. At this point, any news is good news, since we've been in an Overmind-death-induced coma.

I'm for focusing our revival efforts on Xenta. We need to see if we can get our base of operations started up if at all possible. It might be the only major zerg stronghold that hasn't been ravaged yet.

Over Aiur. Those are probably the ones in the most immediate danger, now that the Protoss have reclaimed their homeworld.

Also, we need to confirm whether or not the Warp Network is down.

After we get them active, start activating the ones outside. Then we focus the fleshlings near us into a giant psychic antenna that we can use on the rest of our spawn above Char and on Xenta.

Alternatively, we try to send a chain of Psionic Brofists through all of our fleshlings, sort of like an interstellar psychic hivemind version of Domino Rally.

We turn our gaze to Xenta...which reminds us...

A thin film of flesh has grown over our Eye, long unused in the service of the Overmind, and its bleeds as its tears. The blood stings, but we See. We can look around us, at the spasmodic ridge-scratcher, at the confusedly-circling drones, and at the thrashing battle units. Overlords float across the sky, bumping into one another, falling to the ground, flying upside-down...It is chaos.

We reach out to the nearest fleshling, and we nudge it awake brusquely. It is inside one of our automated factories, still producing cloaking harnesses without supervision.

As we set the fleshlings toward what Psi Emitters we know about, two things happen in rapid succession.

The first is planned. We begin awakening fleshlings above Char. It appears that the ships are unharmed, though one battlecruiser is under attack by a spore colony. We have it ascend out of range.

The second is astounding, and completely unplanned. The minds of hundreds of units across Xenta and Besilus flood into our consciousness suddenly. We take a moment to revel in the familiar psionic noise before we try to piece together what just happened.

After a few seconds, Labbrate and Accountantbrate's voices stream into our thoughts, exultant in their success at placing the Psi Emitters around our primary forces here, wired to activate at the command of Labbrate. Labbrate apologizes for taking a full 4 days, but reminds us that it had to grow a feeling tentacle and blindly discover the activation controls. It vows to be more on-the-ball in the future.

The Psi Emitters functioned for only a moment before shutting off, but they regained us control of almost the whole planet and moon!

Also, I think we might want to get started on the whole "transformation into a being of pure thought" thing. To help that one out, task Labbrate with engineering a gene sequence that would create biological Psi Emitters within ourself and the rest of our brood and a second one that immunizes our soul-link against the Psi Disruptor or other similar interference.

That's essentially creating psi-emitters using the same parts, but using fleshy bits and hands to assemble it instead of complex machinery. A good idea, but it might be a bit *too* complex for Us to assemble without tons of fine-toothed evolutionary measures taken (like evolving generations upon generations of tiny creatures to assemble certain parts of the emitters, and having an overlord to manage them). We already have factories that do pretty much the same thing, but without the psionic power diverted to micromanaging the assembling.

It might be worth trying to investigate a new form of psionic communication that is less prone to getting disrupted by outside sources of interference, though.

-Secondly, find Kerrigan and offer her friendship/some of those resources at our disposal in accordance with the final command of our father.
-Thirdly, figure out what the fuck is going on.

So... stealth scouts, I guess. If we've got any sort of terran tech, comsat scanners would probably be better than sending in cloaked overlords in terms of locating things while remaining concealed.

If Aiur has other sister planets, or moons, then they should be composed of the same base materials as Aiur itself (cosmology!)... This is a long term project, obviously, given that the Protoss have the biggest army camped on Aiur right.

Additionally, the gloves have to come off. Ask Labbrate to begin designing lethal plagues against both the Protoss and humanity. We should know enough about both species' physiology to design something very nasty.

At this point, we need to begin to directly assault both forces' supply structures.

Worst case scenario? Protoss glass Aiur, and we're free to build in the darkness for our counterattack.

    1. Brotip: There are no feral Zerg on Char to regain control of. Just Cerebrates.

    2. Sure. We have control over several fleshlings, contained in the ventral sacs of feral overlords. (Didn't see what you guys expected to gain from this...)

    3. The fleshlings work as fast as they can. The systems are fried, and it has only been a few minutes.

Try to reach out to the existing Old-guard Cerebrates. I know that Gorn is dead, but the protoss there may have killed more, or they might have died on their own. Can we get a count on which Cerebrates are still alive (albeit dying)?

Appraise them of Our current situation (read: doin' OK on Xenta). Gauge their reactions to our being relatively fine and them essentially being bleeding dying masses of brain tissue. Tell them that we may have a possible means of keeping them alive to carry on the Overmind's legacy.

    See which ones are receptive.

The fairly big light show brought on by Feneschal might lead them to believe that. But I think Zeratul might know that we were not on Char, and that we're still floating about somewhere.

Then again, they might assume that we're just slowly dying like the rest of the Cerebrates. If we're gonna rescue some of them, we will have to do it stealthily.

    Wow. Consensus. That's rare.

We order the fleshlings over Aiur to claw their ways free of the overlords they inhabit. They have a moment of contemplation to orient themselves before some of them are beset by wild mutalisks. We lose two fleshlings, but the rest are able to swim away. They have located a crippled carrier and a disabled arbiter. Attempt to take one, or keep swimming to our damaged ship?

An overlord is loaded with a drone and an Emitter. It begins the trip to Char. Our ships above Char stay in a holding pattern as Gorn, Nargil, and two lesser Cerebrates are brought into our fold.

Gorn is elated to hear our thoughts. It doesn't seem to care who is in charge, so long as we intend to use it to slaughter its enemies. We get the feeling it didn't listen to our warnings on Aiur because it was too occupied with the glory of battle.

Nargil, on the other hand, is outraged. Its role in the Swarm was very normative, evaluating species for the Overmind for utility, and obeying its orders for infestation or annihilation to the letter. It believes we have besmirched the name of the Swarm...but it is still grateful for the rescue.

The lesser Cerebrates seem too injured for opinions at the moment. They are grateful to be alive.

Also, while we evacuate the Koprulu sector, we should continually scour each world for resources and interesting genetics. There's no reason why we can't plant a backup clone of ourselves on every world, now that the Overmind is dead.

we tell Gorn to manifest on Xenta until we can gain enough troops to send it into battle. It does so with fervor.

We tell Nargil about the Overmind's plan, but it doesn't want to listen. We plead for a few minutes before taking a new approach. We mention the fleshlings, our half-human hybrids from altering Zerg strains to have genitalia. We get almost half-way through explaining the breeding patterns we tried before it begins manifesting on Xenta. This may be an interesting ride.

The lesser Cerebrates do as they are told. They may regain their personalities over time, but for now, they are still in shock.

The fleshlings over Aiur swim toward the arbiter. Its hull is mostly intact, but a large breach allows them entry. They begin working their way through its winding corridors.

After a few minutes, it becomes obvious that they have walked farther than should be possible. The ship's internal geography does not match the apparent size of the exterior of the ship.

Damn scanner is being a douche.

Anyway, Ive got my desiegns so far. Internals filled with creep, and wired up so that the pilot inside is entirely connected with the craft. Everything is connected by creep, and if it is removed, then the whole thing is a useless shell with spare parts. The iris on the external surface is forward facing, and actually a giant metal plate, with the pilots position being entirely randomized inside. Its as if the entire thing is an organism in and of it self, though with no sense of coherence without a pilot.. Between each of four symmetrical blades situated every 90 degrees starting at 0 is a door, which allows for a payload to escape. This payload can be anything from Drones, to zerglings, to Scourge, to flesh-lings.

The only indication that it is a zerg construct is that the back 7% is covered in creep, and houses engine modules.

Sensors are online, and attitude thrusters are working. We can move the ship a few meters at a time. It is no longer spinning.

The arbiter team has found what appears to be a laboratory. Various odd devices line the room, unkempt either from the battle or from sheer disorganization. There is another door to another hallway at the opposite edge of the room. Continue exploring? Check out the free stuff? Take a smoke break?

For the last several threads we've been screwed because we haven't had time nor resources on our side. Nargil feels excited and happy to be doing its work, but it reacts as if this is merely another scientific experiment. It is pleased by the thorough nature of our previous research. Apparently, breeding trials have never been attempted in the Swarm.

The fleshling in the lab has determined the nature of several objects, but most of them are odd writing utensils, mathematical instruments, or very complex, clockwork paperweights. One was a booby trap that left it electrocuted on the floor for several minutes. It is currently shaking that off.

One fleshling begins to explore the Engine Room. It finds that the engine has been shut down automatically. Restarting it will take at least five hours.

The last fleshling continues to search for the Bridge.

The fleshlings aboard the carrier have sensors working at full capacity, and have finally adjusted for the debris field (partially). They have a clear enough picture of Aiur to confirm that Tsinoseng is no more. It appears that a psionic storm has covered the entire Southern continent.

(It's posts like these that make me wish I had the talent to drawfag a fleshling)

Have the fleshling run diagnostics on the engine system if possible; we don't want to blow the ship up as the engines come to life. As soon as possible, have the ship jump to Xenta via random systems, and make sure all comm equipment is disable before moving.

Good news on Tsinoseng, without warp mobility, the Protoss are going to have to physically transport their war materials like everyone else. Should dramatically slow all colony-building on their part.

What was on the Southern continent in terms of resources and Protoss? Did we royally fuck them up as a parting gift?

Also on the subject of Fleshlings and all that, would it be fair to say that they're sort of like non-psionic Kerrigans? I think they've got far more potential than we've been giving them, and hopefully Nargil will be able to come up with something to do with them.

Also, we should probably put Gorn to work. He's got the whole berserker warrior thing going on for him so let's play him to his strengths and get him working on making a fighting force designed for punching holes in the enemy's face.

(Sorry. Was finishing the Aspie Quiz. Apparently, I'm half and half? This chart makes no goddamn sense)

The bridge is dark, with only the dark blue emergency lights active. Several consoles flash with backup power. A thin layer of ice crystals coats much of the area. There is a body stuck halfway through a breach near the main viewscreen. If this was the last refuge of the crew, they have long since died.

One panel in particular flashes orange, an unusual color inside a Protoss ship.

Labbrate believes the orange console is the control for a localized temporal distortion field. It has no idea where the field might be centered, or why it has its own control panel. It informs us that most of the other panels are just indicating that they have no power, or that the systems they are reporting on have no power. Very little actual information is available.

Based on radio chatter, and just looking at general activity, would it be possible to sneak aboard one of the ships in orbit that wasn't so fortunate to have it's crew survive, and, oh I don't know, toggle the engines for a second to force it into a decaying orbit, or even into another ship.

For all the Protoss know, it could a simple engine error, or maybe it was adrift in the murky blood/flesh pool. Either way, causes some nice collateral damage if we pull it off.
