    Background:
*Click* The muffled click isn't reassuring. Maybe in some contexts it would be. But there's a barrel in your field of vision, so the click of a hammer being pulled back is doing nothing but making you think that you're in the wrong line of work. You open your mouth to say something, but a pair of hands quickly wraps over throat and mouth, forcefully keeping you down in the bed that only moments before you'd been sleeping comfortably in.
    “He's awake.”
“Good, these fucking bastards deserve to be awake for this.”
    “Just do it.”
“Oh I will, but my brother was in Tango on the Ark Royal”
“Bloody hell. Yeah, go ahead then, take your time with him.”
The hushed whispers race through your brain, the words not connected to events, almost displaced from reality. The gun aimed between your eyes though, that is clearly real.
    >> op again !XQ6W0CNp/o 10/15/10(Fri)12:34 No.12453314
Your mind is racing, trying to figure out what is going on, when suddenly a deafening explosions tears across the silence and the gun disappears. The hands on your throat slacken as a huge weight collapses on you, and moments later you feel a warm wet feeling on your face and chest, the familiar copper tang of blood in your mouth and nose. Slowly you begin to hear the sound of gunfire and shouting as the ringing in your ears subsides.
    “Deux. Solide.”
    “Bon, le pilote est sauf?”
    “Sais pas.”
    “Bien, va regardez estit!”
You feel the weight lifted and suddenly you're being hefted out of bed roughly by your flight suit.
“Ami! Allo, pay attention! We're under attack, surprise assault, we're pulling out, you understand?”
You don't, but you nod your head anyway at the man shouting at you as he holds you upright. Over his shoulder you can see another holding a gun that keeps firing out of your tent.
    >> op again !XQ6W0CNp/o 10/15/10(Fri)12:36 No.12453327
“Il comprend! Allright, allons-y mon ami! We get to the hangars, you fly us out, here take this if it gets rough, you know how to use it yes?”
You feel a weight slapped into your hand, your fingers making out the pistol's grip. You nod again, it seems like the right response. A quick glance around shows that your bed is covered in blood, and the ragged corpses of the mysterious intruders lay motionless on the ground next to it. A nearby explosion snaps you back to the more pressing issue of getting off the airfield alive.

Oh yes. Yes. This is excellent. I suspect Steve is going to use another rules-set for personal ground combat, and then there might be some hairy low-altitude knife-fighting once you get wheels/skids up.

I've had this exact scenario happen in my X-COM game; my players fought their way back to the Skyranger, and then the pilot had to deal with a small UFO bouncing them as they got airborne. It was awesome.

First things first- search the bodies of the recently-gibbed British mercs for grenades, flashbangs, smoke grenades, and most importantly, body armor.

And get your hands on a goddamn rifle.

I know. Ark Royal was a Brit converted carrier operating in Somalia post-WW2, another was a carrier that sunk during WW2. Many Brit ships sailed under the name of Queen Vic, but I think at least some of her sister ships were dunked in the wars.

This. Ark Royal was the british answer to the whole cruise ship fiasco, which ended with their Harrier waing getting bounced by OPs flight followed by a demonstration of just how unfair a duel between subsonic fighter/bombers without radar-guided missiles and supersonic-capable fighters with radar-guided missiles can be. The Harriers did do some real damage once OPs flight got into a dogfight with them, but OP&Co still pretty much shredded Ark Royal's carrier wing to the point of it being inoperable as a combat unit.

French. I can't give a word-to-word translation, but just by my general idea of romanic languages and context suggests the FLF pwned the brit commandos trying to whack the pilot, and mostly just discussed whether the guy has any bullet holes in him.

My guess is that this is Baron's cockipt chum, the base is being shot to shit, and he's being asked to fly the FLF buddies out of there before everyone gets shot to shit.

OP again promised to dig those homebrew rules out, like, in the third or fourth thread (i.e. over a year ago) and basically found out that they don't really exist; at best just in the form of quick reference notes pulled out of Steve's head. Stuff like, certain aircraft require two or three rounds to hit full afterburner, because their engines need to spool up, etc, and extra "feats" for pilots, introduced on an as-needed basis ("I'm on a Boat!" was introduced when it was revealed they were going to be operating off a carrier for a few missions, for example.)

OP again just says "I'll try" now, because it's easier then explaining why these custom rules don't really exist in deliverable format in EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THREAD. Honestly, it's nothing that I couldn't do myself, with some reference books.

Wow. Rely on Steve to keep it sizzling.

This can go 2 ways, RP-wise. Either it's a quick intro to get yo back in the pilot seat and flying another mission. Or it is a first attempt of Steve to soften up the genre a bit and integrate the main focus of flying jets into more of an all encompassing roleplaying game.

If the latter is the case, do these things:
    1) Search the bodies of the baddies for any identifying details or intelligence slipups. I once identified a black ops team by the first name stitched into one dead soldier's undies.

    2) Check your plane, hangar and runway for booby traps as best you can. I have never seen an assassination where interdicting enemy extraction wasn't one of the first orders of business.

    3) Get a good look at your rescuers. Ask them the important questions in the heat of battle when they're distracted. Who is their commanding officer? When did they get the mission? Is this an official rescue operation or a dark little secret of the FFL?

    4) Have an emergency evacuation plan ready beforehand. Make sure your AtAs take out any bogeys while everyone else disappears in a different direction hugging the grass in silence. Have a safe meeting point and an alternate ready. Have code phrases to identify each other's messages, and inconspicuous signs to leave hints for your friends (Two white planks next to the runway of any airfield will indicate my heading - 70°, or something like that).

Actually, that mission wasn't really a huge FUCK YEAH BLACKDOG moment. Hell's Aces managed to hold off against a massive force of Harriers and a few fighters (F-14s? Tornadoes?) but in the end, Ark Royale's air wing took down a considerable chunk of the company's assets before they could be evac'd and utterly obliterated the airfield, AND demonstrated that (at least, that early in the game) the Hell's Black Aces just were not ready to take on a proper government-funded military force.

It was basically a "you're not the biggest fish" mission. Because mercs survive, ultimately, only by the grace of the much better supported national armed forces of the world.

Quite true, but that's simply an extension of the difficulty of identifying targets when you're 4,000 feet up moving at 550 knots. But HOLLAYVOOD loves to show that troops designating is needed even when the target would be easily identified from the air.

They're mercenaries. They're bad people. They make orphans and widows for a living. They KILL orphans and widows for a living. They may be friends, but their life is one where callousness equals survival and empathy equals death. These guys are why we believe in things like hell.

And still, somehow, I can't help but be in awe over the lot, and the game they're part of.

This would be one way to "blaze of glory" the game out of existence but I think Steve is more likely to let them get away by the skin of their teeth but end up being cut off from most of their resources in their escape...then killing them off a week later via intercept fighter group as they attempt to link back up with other Black Flag resources. And when they think another squadron of Black Flag aircraft are coming to their rescue it ends up being just another flight of enemies...and they go down knowing that they'd become to much of a liability to the company for them to support any longer.

Eh...just one take on it I guess.

Depends, off the shelf components make an x-plane cheaper, see the X-29's gear/engine for example. But some X planes need custom engines, and the engine becomes part of their total development cost.
