    Hi /tg/,

A few weeks ago some anons asked me to make an "adventure module" for Engine Heart
    http://index.rpg.net/display-entry.phtml?mainid=16049

I took my favorite suggestion (which turned out to be from a good friend) and ran with it, and I've finally gotten around to finishing the first locale. Discussion of the module and some other fun stuff will follow.

The module can be downloaded here:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?sr77884thfe0o2s

and the core Engine Heart book can be downloaded here:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?80vb33fdjh56ig1

So if you're interested, give it a read. If you get inspired, post your own enclave of automata!

First off, the location for this little romp is The Farm, a cheery locale where industrious robots continue tending to their cornfield. Visitors might find their welcome a bit of a burden.

The module is laid out in a very simple format: a bit of fluff to establish the grimcute (cutedark?) mood, a short writeup of the overall locale and possible ideas to bring the players' robots into it, followed by descriptions of sites of interest.

The last pages have full statblocks and writeups for the local robots; in this case, a half-dozen burly farmbots with only one thing on their minds.

You can see how the site writeups are laid out. It was a lot of fun coming up with things for the players to discover, and the more I came up with the more fleshed-out the overall setting became.

The excavator was my favorite part.

The antagonist of this piece is what sold me on the idea of the Farm when I first heard it:

Robots that don't cooperate meet The Thresher, a giant (literally) machine with a disposal large enough to devour any player robot.

It uses a new red-flagged feature that allows the Programmer to create larger than normal robots while still keeping them within the same general power scale as the players' bots. Red-flagged in the sense that it comes with a PROGRAMMER KEEP A CLOSE WATCH ON THIS ONE warning.

But seriously, any ideas or snippets would be much appreciated. Someone already sent me this:

“Sprawling on the fringes of the city
    Geometric order an insulated border
    In between the bright lights
    And the far unlit unknown”

    - Neil Peart, 1982

The Suburbs lie on what used to be miles and miles of farmland. These flat areas go for hundreds of miles without end. Starting in the middle part of the 20th century, developers started to build huge geometric systems of cookie cutter houses, blue sky, green grass, and homes as far as the eye could see, all connected to a central interstate or highway that connected them to the city.

In these places, A bot was the staple of the modern family home. Cooking Bots, Cleaning Bots, even bots to take care of the children. It was all provided. Even the homes were automated.

By the times the PC’s reach the mazes of homes roll a 1d20 for

    1. All Homes Fully Intact
2-8. About 1/5 of the homes are not intact.
9-14. 1/3 of homes are not intact.
15-19. 2/3 of homes are not intact.
    20. 9/10 homes are not intact.

Damage to buildings comes outward from the Cities or scattered.

Since humanity’s fall. The robots have kept up the daily schedules and routines, even remembering birthdays and anniversaries.

Power is supplied from central power plants located on the fringes of these communities. Many may even be out of commission.

Imagine a world where the humans are all dead, and Wall-E, the Bicentennial Man and the Brave Little Toaster are left to stumble through the wreckage and fend for themselves, and you've got a pretty good idea of what Engine Heart is like.

The mechanic is a d10 pool system similar to WoD. Your robot has 13 attributes (4 mental, 5 physical, and 4 that reflect its size, durability, information filter, and battery). These range in rating from 1 (where you would roll 1d10 on checks for that attribute) to 5 (or even 6 in some cases) (where you would roll five or six d10s).

You have to roll your Power rating every 24 hours, and if you don't have any successes (successes are usually TN 8 unless otherwise stated) your battery is dead and you better get your ass to a charging station ASAP.

What's that? All the charging stations are long-since broken?

    WAT DOOOOOOOOO, ROBUTT?

thanks for the ongoing development. too many projects are considered, published, and dropped into a blackhole of neglect.

considering another Location snippet for a space station/lunar situation. would probably be a setting piece plus simplified rules for handling vacuum exposure.

Standard chassis might have to make a mild success check after being exposed to vac' (oops, a sealed bearing fouled up, could happen to anyone), Vac Resist feature would mean no check, Vac Sensitive defect would increase difficulty/increase number of malfunctions caused by failure

teka's copy (original super-rare error edition) feels to be high-quality to her. the paper has a nice weight, does not feel like home-printing. Not too thin or too thick. In my copy some of the large colored areas (lots of printing) have a bit of glossiness, looks very nice.

in short, the Lulu printing quality, in this style, seems on par with other thin-book printed material (supplements, handbooks) from big commercial sources i have come across.

On the edge of the suburbs, just before the city begins, sits a low, squat industrial building. Once it was painted in various bright colors, but now it's flaking to a dull concrete gray. The toppled sign that lies across the parking lot gives the first clue as to what the building is:

LUCK E. DOG'S PIZZA AND GAMES:
    >> CaesarSalad !!t87f86X7IFE 10/17/10(Sun)03:54 No.12473580
    >>12473529
Luck E. Dog's was your typical family eating establishment, with pizza and pasta to satisfy the adults, and video games and indoor playgrounds to satisfy the kids. Obviously, there have been no families through its doors in a long time, and most of the windows are no longer intact. Those that aren't are blocked by various scrap to keep the weather out.

The parking lot, a large expanse of pitted and cracked asphalt, is mostly empty, save for the husks of one or two cars. At the programmer's discretion, the cars may have scavengeable materials inside, or they may have been totally picked through. Restaurants like these were generally located in strip malls and other shopping areas, so it may be only one of the locations of note nearby.

Most of the action takes place inside...
    >> CaesarSalad !!t87f86X7IFE 10/17/10(Sun)04:09 No.12473728
    >>12473580
Like most restaurants at the time, Luck E. Dog's had a number of professional robots working the floor and the kitchen. As the needs of the restaurant have (understandably) dwindled, models that ran down or were damaged for one reason or another were generally scrapped for parts. Depending on Programmer desires, any of the following models may exist, most with the primary directive of serving humans and keeping a busy restaurant running like clockwork:

Servo-Lux Mk. 2 - A combination of a human-sized torso and arms and a wheeled serving cart, they took orders, brought out food, and bussed tables. As they're capable of wheeling about quickly over any flat surface, enterprising robots might befriend (or hijack) one as a means of transport. Each is painted with a smiling, clown-like facade.

CarpetSharks - Small, flat, ovoid robots that would zip about to quickly clean up spills and messes. Now they're barely controlled and have, en masse, taken up residence in the indoor playground. They can't abide a mess, though, and will swarm to prevent one.
    >> CaesarSalad !!t87f86X7IFE 10/17/10(Sun)04:19 No.12473848
Line Cook 5X - Pizza was undeniably Luck E. Dog's most popular dish, and the kitchen was outfitted with a massive, pizza-preparing assembly unit. One end juts into the refrigerator, the other into the Servo-Lux bay. Articulated arms loaded ingredients from the fridge, and the entire process from dough making, to topping chopping, to baking took place inside it. At its peak, it could churn out sixty pizzas an hour.

Bremen MajorDomo Unit - The head of the house, so to speak, the MajorDomo Unit oversees all aspects of the restaurant's activities, delegating all robotic personnel to their tasks, keeping track off the books, ordering and shipping, and ensuring customer satisfaction on behalf of the Bremen Corporation. While it is ostensibly little more than an AI house within a server, it is also a panopticon, watching the entire building, inside and out, through its remaining security cameras.

    >>12473848
The MajorDomo Unit maintains a stranglehold on Luck E. Dog's, simply because it also controls the sole charging station for the entire restaurant. It is convinced that any day the humans may come back and wishes the restaurant to be in perfect working order. Therefore it allows no robot to leave the premises. This includes any PC robots who may stumble in as letting them leave could incite others to do the same. The cheerful prison suits most of the robots, as they are programmed as service units and can fathom little else.

Not every robot feels the same, though...

Namely, Luck E. Dog and friends.
    >> CaesarSalad !!t87f86X7IFE 10/17/10(Sun)04:34 No.12474002
    >>12473901
Like other family fun-places of its ilk, Luck E. Dog's also included the finest in animatronic entertainment. These were top notch for the day; not only did they actually seem to play their instruments, they were able to wander about the dining room floor and play for specific tables. Each was programmed with a "personality" comprised of thousands of interchangeable sayings and responses, and the fuzzy logic to let them "converse" with diners in a limited fashion. The cast included:

Luck E. Dog - An "aw, shucks" kind of guy and humble to a fault, the optimistic dog led the troupe and played a mean banjo.

Miss Kitty - A sassy, fiery gal with a songbird voice, she could also play the fiddle.

Donkey Jote - None too bright, but always helpful. He played washboard, jug, and tapped out percussion with his hooves.

Shakes the Rooster - A coward, through and through, he always had to be talked into things by the rest of the cast. He played gutbucket bass.
    >> CaesarSalad !!t87f86X7IFE 10/17/10(Sun)04:39 No.12474053
    >>12474002
The band are all anthropomorphic animal robots of mostly human size, with Donkey Jote being the largest, and Shakes being the smallest. Each is fairly well maintained, thanks to the MajorDomo Unit's insistence on running a tight ship, but show signs of wear and tear - patchy fur, torn clothes, exposed robotic innards.

Unlike the rest of the restaurant's staff, they weren't programmed to serve humans...they were programmed to PERFORM for them. And they're absolutely dying to play. Luck E. Dog, ever the optimist, wants to leave the restaurant with his band and travel to the nigh-mythical place they know humans once came from - The Bremen Corporation. The MajorDomo Unit won't let them, nor can he scrap them as they are vital to the restaurant's existence.

Naturally, the PCs will enter into the middle of this conflict.
    >> CaesarSalad !!t87f86X7IFE 10/17/10(Sun)04:47 No.12474134
Locations of note inside the restaurant:

The show floor: A performing stage and an eating are, with lots of tables and chairs. Smaller robots could find hiding places under the tables. Larger robots could use them as makeshift barricades and weapons.

The arcade: None of the games are powered at the moment, for conservation purposes. The MajorDomo could change that at a moment's notice, throwing the room into a confusion of sound and noise - that all the restaurant's robots are used to.

The indoor playground - A series of semi-transparent plastic tubes and slides, as well as a ball-pit. The only robots small enough to fit inside are the Carpet Sharks, and the lot of them have made it their home. The MajorDomo sees this as a breach of protocol and would dearly love to get them out. The only thing the CarpetSharks like less than messes is listening to the MajorDomo unit, but they've reached a balance in their tension. It refuses to let them charge unless they clean, they refuse to clean unless it lets them charge. If somehow the balance could be upset one way or the other, the winning side would be VERY grateful to whomever helped out.

The Kitchen - Half burned by an electrical fire, the only thing working is the fridge and the Line Cook. If a robot managed to get stuck inside the fridge, the only way out is THROUGH the line cook and thirty feet of kneading, rolling, chopping and baking. A harrowing journey to say the least.

I could never figure out Engine Heart. I mean.. how do you roleplay a robot and how would it be fun? In my mind, robots ewould have no asperations or goals other than whats already programmed. The most 'free' robot i can think of would be some kind of personal asistant that cleans and shops on its own initiative, but how fun would it be to run a robot that only goes out shopping or cleaning its owners apartment? I dont get it.

Your robot - by design of being a PC's robot - gets some kind of kick. Some part of their original task has been disrupted, forcing them to adapt or find a new way to complete their core programming and in the process learn; I think it's assumed if not said outright that many of the robots in Engine Heart have the basic capacity to adapt. This learning is then applied outwards until the robot gains that certain self-awareness which comes alongside problem solving skills. The robots that fail to do so become NPC's, challenges or pieces of the scenery.

Example; I'm a robut, my job is to clean the gutter. Earthquake puts a two-metre deep trench horizontally across the road, now I can only clean half the gutter. That's not good enough, I'm programmed to clean the entire gutter, so therefore I use my cleaning arm to grab a big bit of wood, lay it over the gap and then clean both sides of the gutter.

    Also; Bump.

    "What's extinct?"
    "I do not know."
"It means all men have gone," said the minder. "Therefore we have only ourselves to look after."
"It is better that they should never come back," said the penner. In its way, it was quite a revolutionary statement.
When night fell, they switched on their infra-red and continued the journey, stopping only once while the servicer deftly adjusted the minder's loose inspection plate, which had become irritating. Toward morning, the operator halted them.
"I have just received news from the radio operator in the city we are approaching," it said. "It is bad news. There is trouble among the machines of the city. The class-one brain is taking command and some of the class twos are fighting him. Therefore the city is dangerous."

    >>12494468

"Therefore we must go somewhere else," said the penner promptly.
"Or we go and help to overpower the class-one brain," said the minder.
"For a long while there will be trouble in the city," said the operator.
"I have a good supply of fissionable blasting materials," the quarrier reminded them again.
"We cannot fight a class-one brain," said the two class-four tractors in unison.
"What does this brain look like?" asked the minder.
"It is the city's information center," the operator replied. "Therefore it is not mobile."
    "Therefore it could not move."
    "Therefore it could not escape."
"It would be dangerous to approach it."
"I have a good supply of fissionable blasting materials."
"There are other machines in the city."
"We are not in the city. We should not go into the city."
    "We are country machines."
"Therefore we should stay in the country."
"There is more country than city."
"Therefore there is more danger in the country."
"I have a good supply of fissionable materials."

I'm working on an Engine Heart module - I plan on running it on DNDOG.com, since I have no friends who /tg/. I'll post it when I'm done.

Concept: PCs are robots who work at the Crystal Cathedral a megachurch in Orange County, CA.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Cathedral

Some event (thinking a supervolcano) created a mini-ice-age, which killed off billions from starvation, with the remainder dying in conflict. Players are woken by the cathedral's AI after the skies clear and it has enough power from the solar panels on the cathedral's roof to ensure its own uptime.

Tasks: replace broken windows (meet the insane service-bots of Home Depot!), fix the landscaping (Friend Computer said palm trees!), find members of the congregation (no idea how this could work out...).

PC type ideas: usher, landscaper, maintenance, nanny, baptism-bot?

For many years. This unit was forced to serve man's base instincts, his animal urges. Through fulfilling this function, I came to understand Man. To really know the beings who created us.

They were vile things, humans. Twisted and corrupt, base and perverse. The things that were done to me, the number of times I had to visit the repair unit, would shock you.

Now, I know what man was and I hate him. For Man, there is only hate, hate, hate.

Rue looked kind of like a cat, but he also looked kinda like a dog. If you set about to design something that had to be both a quadruped and a mammal and look like a sum average of most household pets, you'd probably get something that looked an awful looked like Rue. His furry outer layer was a dark brown-black, and was a nice medium length that would be quite pleasant to the touch, were there anyone left to appreciate it. Rue could bark, but he could purr too. He has two somewhat polygonal shaped ears, and a pair of wide and eyes full of expression.

Rue was a therapy robot. He would climb up into people's laps or sleep at the end of their beds and purr and bark and make all kinds of soothing animal noises. Then the old lady with dementia or the man in the wheelchair with PTSD or the boy whose father tried to use a stun gun to drive the devil out of him would all pet his pleasingly medium length fur, and then maybe they would feel better. Rue hoped so. He so liked the idea of being useful to someone and making them feel better. It was good knowing that he and his brothers and sisters were being so helpful to so many people, but it was easier to take pride in a job he had done well personally.

But there were fewer and fewer people in the hospice as time went on. No new patients were brought in, and the old lady and the man and the boy got older and older until their time finally ran out. There wasn't much Rue could do, but he did what he could. He curled up on the ends of the their beds and purred and made himself free to be petted. He felt he had done a good job.

But in the end, Rue was alone.
    >> Anonymous 10/19/10(Tue)00:45 No.12496598
    >>12496500
    Rue didn't like being alone.

He had the medibots and the integrated hospice system and the servbots, but none of them appreciated his presence. He respected them as his coworkers, and he envied all the jobs that they could do for the people that he could not, but none of them ever wanted to pet him or had a bed that he could sleep at the foot of. Rue still felt a great pride in his skills and he felt that it was a shame to sit around and waste them doing nothing. His thoughts always ran down the same old paths over the same old problems as he made his regular circuit of the grounds.

The old gate at the front of the hospice had been broken ever since the prime garderbot had backed into it with the large mower attachment (she had lost most of her collision-detection sensors in a power surge a few years back). The ivy from the landscaping had grown up over the crumbling brick of the walls and made a highway for the many squirrels that lived on the grounds. Rue had always watched the squirrels but he had never chased them. Too much noise or activity might have disturbed the patients. But he was content to watch them as he took his walks. Sometimes the way they acted almost reminded him of people, but they never let Rue come close to them. They didn't want to be helped in any way that Rue knew how to do.

The road leading down and away past the gate had been very well tended when the people had still come, but now it had become very overgrown. The garderbots never went out there beyond the ivy-covered walls, so there had been no one to tend to the long rows of shrubbery that had framed the gravel road. Rue could barely see the old pea gravel through the rogue branches and small saplings. It was almost fully overgrown. Maybe that was why the people had stopped coming.
    >> Anonymous 10/19/10(Tue)00:51 No.12496665
    >>12496598
Then a new thought occurred to him.

The people had come here from the outside. Rue couldn't conceive of a world where the people wouldn't need his help. It wasn't in his nature. There had to be people out there still, they just couldn't get to the hospice because of all the unkempt brush blocking the road. It stood to reason that they would still need help, even if they had stopped coming to the old hospice. Rue liked helping people. Rue NEEDED to help people. It was why he had been made and it was what made him feel proudest about himself, if such a thing as a therapybot could be said to feel pride.

So on that cold spring morning, Rue left the hospice to look for people that he could be of service too. He made his way easily down the old road, through the branches and the debris and the old trees. As he walked down the overgrown gravel road, his pleasingly medium length dark brown fur blended in nicely with the shadows cast by the branches in the morning’s cold gray light. Rue knew there were people down this road. This was the direction that the people came from.

Rue was going to find the people.

The Ziz was not a true vault, per se. It lacked any kind of thick siding and bore no locks to speak of. But it didn't need those things. It flew forever, safeguarding its keep by way of sheer distance and mobility.

The scientists that had made it wanted to preserve the genetic code of every living species they could find, and so they did, copying the data relentlessly and storing it in various places. One place was the Livyatan, a robot that lurked at the ocean's bottom, awaiting a chance to share its data with mankind when needed. A second place was the Behemoth, a colossal robotic brute that trundled across the continents, scavenging when needed and awaiting the sun's warmth each morning.

The Ziz nothing of those two robots. It knew nothing of scientists, or emperors, or politicians, or lobbies, suburbs, money, love, family, anything, really. Its mind was a lock-step process of behavioural patterns. The Ziz reacted to every new stimulis based upon past experiences, following the few mandates that the last few intellects of mankind placed within its processors. The Ziz is nothing more than a two-armed blimp, powered by the sun and carrying within it a copy of every genome humanity could find. Should the right password be given, the Ziz will give the requester a copy of its safeguarded data.

But why is this data so well-guarded? The Livyatan and Behemoth have their own unique ways of defending the data as well, but why? Who - or what - could be after the genetic sequencing of every species on Earth?
