(I will never be on time)

The beasts had us by surprise and they charged, knocking into our craft. If that wasn’t bad enough being nearly level with the shallow bog water allowed the beast to swipe at anyone near the edge.

I’ve never been so glad to be in a cage. Impacting against wood would be far better than going in the water with those things. Lupus, Cú, and Rip were able to keep standing, but Uriel, the “angel of death”, wasn’t as lucky. Amazingly she turned the horrible fall from her perch into a graceful dive. I’ll never know how she missed the bottom, but I can only assume it was one of her many powers.

The prime target of the beasts seemed to be Cú. Standing at the bow left him wide open and they did their best to capitalize. Unfortunately his armor and grit proved too hard to crack. Lupus was also targeted but his agility and reflexes made this futile.

It was quickly apparent that these beasts weren’t the only things in this swamp. Cultists gathered on the shore brandishing man catchers and bolas as they did before. Just as before, this would make it very easy to kill them.

Uriel was the first to act and used her grapnel to move into the treetops. I never sighted her again but her work was all I needed to see. Two of the Cultists dropped instantly and with her silencer Uriel simply could not be tracked.

    >Slipping into the swift flow of battle and song, I had a peculiar thought.

    >These things swarming before me, clambering their decaying bulk up the edge of boat, only to be stricken down and driven back the moment their grip finds purchase...

    >It felt much like a game we used to play on Dusk called, "King of the Mountain." The children were much better at the game than these things though, I must confess.
    >> Joseph Evens 10/17/10(Sun)20:38 No.12482029
Cú was the next to act, his mask slid down and once again he went silent. Lupus brandished his chainsword, seems he was now ready to use the weapon we found so long ago. The beast began to climb onto the boat but that would prove costly. One swipe and his arm was missing chunks, another and his torso was nearly bisected. The beast plunged back into the water, dead and more would follow.

I had to take time to get on my feet, by the Emperor those beasts smelt foul! Striking them only released a new wave of odor but we were all quite prepared. My mask and Rips augments filtered out the worst of it and the rebreathers made Lupus and Cú immune to the effects.

The only person who would feel the effects would be Conrad…wait, where did Conrad go!?

I did not have time to look for the man. Beasts were everywhere, so I attempted to stave a few off. I fired full auto, hitting a few that were getting ready to charge. Quite a few of my blows landed true, but none of the beast were killed.

Rip fired her Meat hammer at one standing by the boat and scored a hit. It somehow survived the tri-barreled shotgun and retaliated. The blow landed, but she seemed ok for the moment.

More charged and I was knocked down as the boat rocked. Lupus was thrown towards the back of the ship, but Rip saw this. She quickly turned and softened the blow. Both of them seemed unharmed, Emperor as my witness Lupus had plenty to cushion his fall and Rip was hardy enough to withstand the impact. The assassin seemed thankful and would soon return the favor.

The cultists waded into the water, keen on taking us for whatever purpose, but before they could make it they were cut down my more unseen automatic fire.

Cú swung at the beast ahead of him and removed several of the beast’s layers. It was still alive!? I had no idea these creatures could be so hardy! I expected my burst to go mostly unnoticed but for them to take Cú’s powerful swing and Rip’s meat hammer…this would prove to be a challenge.

Lupus defended Rip, cutting deep into the one that attacked her moments before. Like the beast before it this one also fell to Lupus’ chainsword, more so because of the previous shotgun blast.

It took me a few seconds to stand and it was then I saw what became of Conrad. He must have been flung from the boat after the first charge and now one of the beasts had him. I was forced to make a choice, there were more approaching us, but Conrad was in peril.

    I didn’t choose him.

I fired again at the beasts that were away from the boat. What’s worse is that another ship was on the horizon and it was full of cultists. It appears Uriel sensed the presence of a witch on the ship and claimed the kill as her own.

Rip drew her combat shotgun and followed my lead, shooting at the monsters that were not yet at the ship.

Much to my joy, many of the creatures began to flee. It seems they truly were animals and they were not suicidal unlike the cultists. As the one turned away from Cú, it left itself wide open and he took advantage of the situation. A massive gash across the beast’s spine was all it needed to join the two others in the afterlife.

It seemed only the ones we hit would lose the will to fight as any that weren’t engaged continued towards the ship with the intent of killing us.

Cú was besieged on all sides, and while their attacks never seemed to make it through, the horrible diseases and rot couldn’t be good for him, and once again I found myself on the ground. Lupus was also tossed but managed to grab the ships edge. I thought balance like that was impossible, but he simply palmed the boats thin ridge and stopped his fall.

More cultists flowed out of the woods and into the bog while the ship drew closer. This would prove to be a fatal error on their part. Shots tore through their flesh and the witch was dead. Uriel continued to live up to her…”name”. The other cultist caught in the hail of rounds lived, but did not fare much better. Dum dum rounds seemed to be the ammunition used, and they were truly lethal.

Cú swung his sword at another of the many beasts near him, and as before it was wounded. Lupus simply rolled his hand and skillfully ended up in the water. It seems he was planning to cut off the cultists that came from the land. I couldn’t help but find the differences between us funny. He made it look easy but once again I had to take my time to stand. I left my Creed-9 on the floor and drew my tranter. I aimed, I fired, and the heavy round pushed itself through the wooden cages and punching a deep hole into the beast that was drowning Conrad. Beasts continued to charge, and rip would soon be drawn into melee. With this in mind she dropped her gun and drew a chainsword

Wait, where the hell did she get that from?

    >The onslaught of these things' massive, blubbery fists and their clumsy clawing at my armor was exhilarating and, truthfully, almost humorous.

    >They were each far bulkier than a large man, yet, even with three of them charging me in tandem, they could only bruise me as I cut into their flesh.

    >I had to cut deeply. They were like massive bags of rotting fat, their soggy flesh sloughing of in loose clumps like meat far overcooked.
    >> Joseph Evens 10/17/10(Sun)22:22 No.12483211
She didn’t seem to have the training to use it like Lupus. She even seemed to have some difficulty holding onto it once the blades started rotating, but she was skilled enough. It tore into the nearest stench beast. There had to be at least twenty of the beasts and they just kept getting closer. Even the cultists were in high number, and another boat was spotted behind us along with another witch.

More beasts began to flee, unfortunately so did the one who had Conrad in its claws. The way they ran was not unlike an ape, and its large hand was wrapped around his head. Worse, these beasts were heavy. If he survived, it would only be by the grace of the Emperor.

Uriel seemed to have faith in this as the beast was cut down in a hail of shells. Conrad didn’t seem conscious and with the heavy rain the current began to pick up and pull his body away.

Cú continued to carve into the beast, and they continued to flee only to be cut down upon giving the opening. The water near the head of the ship started to resemble a disgusting pea soup.

Lupus got in a fight with a beast of his own, taking some pressure off of Cú who has been charged by one for each one that fled. The massive claw was dodged with ease and received a horrible gash for all its trouble. I stood again, and did my best to help Rip, who was being overwhelmed. Another Tranter round and another hit was the best I could do.

Rip cut into another with her sword but she was starting to look tired. The beasts have been slowly chipping away at her but this was the last of them. If we drove them away, we’d only have to deal with the cultists. A far better option.

Sure enough they fled Lupus and Cú both taking their aggressors down as they fled. Now it was the cultists’ turn to swarm. Several attempted to entrap Cú, but it was a fruitless effort. The many charging Lupus managed to ensnare him but he would work his way out before being truly trapped.

Uriel began to assault the boat approaching from the rear. Again the witch was her primary target, and I agree with the priority she put on them. Like the two before, this one was a fine red mist before it had a chance to use its unholy powers.

(I have lost massive ammounts of steam, I am sorry)
    >> Joseph Evens 10/18/10(Mon)00:14 No.12484362
Cú leapt off the front of the boat to meet the cultists, his sword struck true and plunged all the way through a cultist, killing the man instantly.

Lupus used his blinding speed to make a bad situation into something manageable. The cultist surrounded him on 3 sides but his speed made this advantage trivial. One was suddenly missing an ear, and the other had a massive cut across his chest.

h the cage in an effort to ensnare me, but missed horribly. I found this entire thing to be quite amusing, why he didn’t just lock the cage I’ll never know. Still he made my job easy for me. A burst from my Creed-9 was all it took to make his body looked like perforated cheese.

Rip quickly ran towards the front of the ship where the last cultists were and deployed her heavy stubber.

…where the hell did she keep all these things?

While Cú had the one cultist impaled, another attempted to ensnare him from behind. Cú turned to the man and lifted his sword out of the first cultist, splitting him in half from the point of entry only to smash it down on the one behind him, slicing him in two.

They kept coming though; truly these men were mad to keep coming.

Lupus easily dodged the men’s nets, finishing the earless one by burying his chainsword in his chest and ripping it out to carve into the last one’s leg. I reloaded my empty weapons and Rip began to shred the last cultists.

The battle was ours. Cú cleaving men to pieces, Lupus using his agility to strike the injured man’s head from his shoulders and finish off another, Rip firing one last salvo at those that remained, it was all over.

I stored my weapons and helped Lupus into the boat, as soon as Cú exited his rage he dove after Conrad. The man swam like a fish; recovering both Conrad and his shotgun with ease.

Uriel simply landed on the boat, it seems she had eliminated every cultist on the boat that was coming from behind and simply grapneled back on to our ship.

We all looked at the broken man at our feet, and Rip made it as simple as could be.
    Conrad was dead.
