So I didnt get to properly debrief the last mission so I'll do one now.

    >Start Log

    > Mission report one: Bravo Team has gained a foothold in an abandoned tunnel system. New recruits as well as some remnants of the Hearth defense forces have joined in on the fight to carry a counter offense to a hive.

During which there were expected xenomorph presence that used tunneling strategies extensively, despite that, Bravo team has made acceptable headway and lost only two armor units.

A temporary base has been established at one of the starting arteries of the tunnel system, an F Class sized mining transport secured for the [censored] kilometer insertion operation.

    Unit [K] Blinky,

    and

    Unit [K] Lost

have recieved a class upgrade and a point upgrade respectively.

Walker is also calling for command chains and sub units to be established...

    Updates are being processed now...

Operation time to resume is pending....

Weird, Orbital, and I have been talking about the whole ranking/upgrading thing, and we've come up with a new system.

From now on, getting a new rank does not equate to kill counts. Rather, it will be dependent on your performance, actions, and participation, and will be awarded by your respective CO. Upgrades (levels), however, will still be dependent upon kill counts.

So essentially, you can get two upgrades, but still remain at the recruit/private rank.

However, those of you who currently hold a rank still get to keep them. Because that would be a dick move to demote you guys after your actions.

    >This was done because of some confusion regarding multi-class ranking, and the fact that it would be odd if we had like 10 sergeants running around.

Maybe we should get a few more intermediate ranks in there? Something like:
    >recruit/private>pfc>specialist>lance corporal>corporal>sergeant
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 12/04/10(Sat)17:39 No.13029333
Walker, in order to prompt a rearrangement of fighting forces you will need the following.

At least [1] Lieutenant to supplant as Field Commanders
At least [1] Sgt. who will act as squad leaders for their Squads.
Below SGT. Rank is Corporal who maybe pending SGTs. should they fall in battle.

And among corporals are private 1st class, or specialist [spc] ranks who are experienced veterans

all new recruits begin at private-

Squads can be as few as three units-

    ======================
    [Lieutenants]
    -
    -

    [Squad Name]
    [SGT]
    [Corporals]
    -
    -
    [Pvts]
    >> [Gr.CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/04/10(Sat)17:41 No.13029347
Also, the kills required for upgrades are as follows:

Infantry: 5, 10 (special. class opened), 15, 20 (master class opened)

Armor: 10, 20 (special. class opened), 40, 80 (master class opened)

Also, each base unit class has it's own upgrade path. This means that kills in one unit class only goes towards that upgrade tree, not any others. So for instance, Player A gets 4 kills as an Anti-Armor, and 2 as a Rifleman. The 4 kills as the Anti-Armor go towards that class' upgrade path, and the 2 go towards the Rifleman path. Only when that player gets 5 kills as one specific class do they get an upgrade point for that class.

For the ground forces, I plan for lieutenants to be platoon commanders - essentially, they'll be responsible for two or three squads, each head by a sergeant.

Additionally, if no proper commanding officer is present, the lieutenant and his sergeants will act as a "CO council." Essentially, the lieutenant will be the CO, but the sergeants will be like his cabinet members. If multiple platoons are present, then the entire group are to work together, with each lieutenant responsible for his platoon.

Oh yeah, due to the nature of this game, I'll let the soldiers decide who they want to work under. However, I would like the lieutenants to at least run the list of their preferred sergeants by me first. This is merely for permanent posting, and does not rigidly bind any soldier to a specific squad/platoon, as certain squad/platoon leaders may not be available at all times.

Squad/Platoon names are to be decided by the unit's respective leader, just as the name Bravo and Sword of Damocles was decided by me and Weird.

just a re-post of the story I wrote,

Aberham walked slowly down the racks, his quarry could not move. It was cold here; indefinite storage, not active duty; which was pointless, considering all the tanks were so well insulated you could leave them out for 100 years and not see a single K rise, or so the techs said.

Ghost was off duty. Not that Aberham expected to be interrupted either way.
Row 3, unit 8: he stopped. From his pocket he pulled a notepad, on it some of Ghost’s handwriting some his, he scanned it over briefly.

For a minute or so he deliberately punched the controls. Bypass maintenance cycle routine, normalize pressure, automatic interrupt engaged 2 min 30 second, antimicrobial stasis in place.

Aberham stood back, and watched the black, windowless cover of the tank slide past -Maybe not so pointless after all-

For a few minutes he stood observing that mirror, his mirror. He could feel himself more acutely while looking into it; his breath clouding the air, his mind building what he sees, the rubber of his boots flexing to accommodate his shifting weight, a ‘centered’ moment.

He smiles, and allows himself a sharp inhale.

“I may not need to see you again…you should remember this too.”

    “sleep well”

    The timer runs to zero, and the cover closes, he moves to leave, but sees a new tank in a previously empty rack. It’s only distinguishing characteristic: a small fogged window. He approaches it, and with his sleeve wipes the frost from the portal;

and then walks away, without as much as a glance.

I like the leveling system, but it doesn't take medics into account. Will you be sticking with the heals and drop count for medic leveling or making up something else? Also I would suggest making drops count for every class, it's only fair. Plus it can be difficult to get kills when Iron's is running around in his death machine.

    >What Warsaw did after the last mission

Warsaw sat reclined against against the damp sewer wall, his headphones in his lap blasting yet another particularly loud song. It was an attempt to relax before the next part of the operation. Not that he needed it. Aberham had done all the real work, hauling Roosevelt out of a swarm of bugs and getting him standing again, patching up Lost after she'd taken one too many hits. In comparison all Warsaw had done was sit on his ass in Betsy and take a stroll with Nomad. That was good though, for Warsaw being useful usually meant people were injured. He'd seen enough fighting by now to realize that you were lucky if all you got was injured. Odds were far more likely you'd end up dead. So if being useless meant people weren't getting hurt Warsaw could deal with that. He just hoped he'd get to use a strider again sometime soon.

Drop counts? As in, the number of times you are deployed? I guess that goes towards the ranks, but not upgrades.

Also, for medics, you get points for successful saves (heal actions, but not total hearts healed), and kills (you can get kills via grav gun, you know). Just note, saving someone via grav gun doesn't count (like simply deflecting a missile or just pulling a person). They do count towards badassery points that would allow a person to be promoted by a CO.

Also, in terms of upgrades, anything with a number except for actions can be upgraded on your unit card. Additionally, spec. classes replace your old one, so Wolf and Hawkes cannot go back to being a simple rifleman. However, past upgrades and the point that comes with the spec class carry over.

Not really. In essence, a medic could be a god-send badass on the field. So yeah, you don't get a point for deflecting a missile. You get a point if that missile blows someone up. And while pulling someone towards you doesn't in of itself get a point, saving the wounded soldier you just drag does.

Dragon sat looking down into darkness. They found a tunnel deeper down but HQ was setting up a base camp, Dragon hadn't fired a round so naturaly he volunteered for first watch.

Deep down the swarm waited, and soon a nuke would be the end of all that.

"Man that'd be something to see" The private talked to him self and only a dull echo answered.

He was itching for some real action, and there was some real fighting on the other side. So close, he thought, so damn close. The thought of death ment little to him, after all he was a clone, and clones were made for dieing.

Lighting one of Howe's cigs, the urge to pop off a rocket into the darkness was a strong one. The threat of damage to the rails the only thing that stoped him.

"Just want to blow q*censored* up."

No doubt, after all Aberham has preserved Roosevelt's clones very effectively, and helped Blinky dodge a rocket

However there is a rather large question of contingency when it comes to medic actions, that is: the unit must be in range, and must be injured,

While a typical unit will more often then not have a target to engage, and with more efficient actions.

Games tend to happen when they happen. OC usually gives us advanced warning about when one might happen, but not always.

Correction: the infantry upgrade path is 5,10, 20, 40, not 5,10,15,20.

Special class available at 10, Master at 40. Sorry about the confusion.

And yes, you get an upgrade point at each level, ones from prior levels transfer to the new class, so at 10 you should have a total of two (2) points, with one already spent and transferring to your new class and another that is to be applied to the new class.

This is to promote more individuality/specialization among our troops. And no, it's not incredibly broken, because our enemies will be just as broken at this point.

    >Okay, posting this, then I'll actually read.

There is a splash as the hand reaches into the intelpool. It pulls back up a life-support umbilical that goes taunt, hauling out a head.
A gasp as the umbilical is undocked. “Are you trying to kill me?!”
Laughter. “Of course not. You of all people know I won’t need to be here to do that.”
A hand wipes away conductive fluid. “I assume you want to know the results?”
“I already got a base read, just want to hear it from an ‘expert’.”
“You know that by requesting her brain scans, you tripled her psicomm bandwidth? If Walker was to find out, he--”
“He won’t: masked it as background data.”
“With an in-depth look, he’ll track it down. And then he’ll see--”
“He’s been busy with the fight, and he’ll be working on other things now. Quit worrying.”
    A sigh. “Okay.”
“So, what did you find? She gone active?”
“She’s only been in the field for a day. So far her knight combat has been in good order, and she showed remarkable braver--”
“I don’t care about her bravery. She’s a hunk of meat. What about her mind?”
A longer sigh. “She’s still passive, but that’s to be expected. She’s starting to be aware of it consciously.”
    “And?”
“She’s very receptive. Her waves are spiking when xenomorphs are getting in range. It’s having emotional--”
“Yet she killed 3 of them… impressive.”
“It’s terrifying her. She’s a new recruit and having the equivalent of torture being done to her every time one of these--”
A sneer. “Don’t be a bleeding heart, doc. You knew what this was when you signed up.”
“I know… Okay, so she’s heading into a full-blown hive. I suggest we dampen her receptivity with--”
“What? No. We’re going in increase it.”
“You’re mad! We do that and she’ll snap. A complete emotional breakdown. She’ll be useless to us.”

“A snap might mean an active manifestation. And if it doesn’t? They’ll tear her to pieces and we’ll have the new clone.”
A pause. “But that physic damage will transfer.”
“There are trauma filters in place, just like with every death. They should take the sting out.”
“It might. Okay, so hypothetically, how are you going to raise her receptivity?”
“Adenosine blockers, plus a slow-release stimulant. Both standard on-board meds.”
“She’s just recovering from sever wounds. She needs to sleep.”
    “That just sweetens the pot.”
    “I… I won’t do that.”
A grin. “You don’t have to, already done.”
    “You…”
“Oh, I can’t wait to see how she fairs against the broodmother.”
“Its physic energy is going to rip her mind apart.”
“Unless she adapts. You always forget our adaptability, especially in times of stress.”
    “You--”
“Anything else come up in the pool?”
“She’s responding to the emotions of her squad, primarily those directed at her or thoughts of her. I think.”
    “Interesting. Anything else?”
“Nothing concrete. It’ll take more time in the pool, probably more readings…”
    “Very well. Keep monitoring.”
    A sigh. “You’re a monster.”
Silence. With a last mournful look, the figure recedes back into the interpool.

A wry laugh. “I’m a human, and I’ll do anything I think is necessary for its survival.”

On the note of TA's and AFK units:

TAs, as you know, are Tactical Advisers. When a player dies on the field, they are automatically uploaded into the TA network, becoming a TA.

In the event of no CO presence, a TA may assume the duties of the CO, calling in support, redeploying soldiers, botting AFK players, etc. However, they defer to the Lt's deployed on the field in such a situation.

From the TA network, a CO may decide to redeploy a TA, in which they are returned to the field as a soldier or a pilot of a vehicle. This method deducts from a player's clone pool. Additionally, a CO may decide to assign a TA to an empty vehicle, in which case the TA still retains their TA tag, and essentially "bots" the vehicle much like they would an AFK player. This method does not count against the TA's clone pool.

All kills made by TAs and units botted by a TA or CO do not count - neither TA or AFK player earn those kills. But at the same time, deaths do not count either - AFK players are not penalized, and TA's are not penalized if a player/empty vehicle is destroyed while they are botting it.
    >> [Gr.CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/04/10(Sat)21:28 No.13031511
    >>13031436

Additionally, if a player exhausts all their lives, they have the option of maintaining that character as a TA, until they are awarded a new body. Note that this is solely up to the acting CO or OC. An alternative is to simply roll a new character, independent of the now-dead one.

Also, with the new squad system in place, squad/platoon leaders may bot any AFK players under their command, and, in the event of death and transferal to the TA network, are assigned to their respective unit.

It should be noted that only OC or a CO are allowed to award new clones to any player. Only in extreme cases is a TA or any other player with a commanding rank allowed to do so.

It should also be noted that, while a TA may not award a new clone to players (including themselves/other TAs), they CAN, in the absence of any other player out-ranking them, redeploy themselves.

Also going prone makes an attack more accurite by one. Any unit can melee for 4 (save for knights who have the sword instead) does that get the benifit from going prone?

I do believe it's something different, unless OC drops a new unit card explicitly stating that that is your new class.

And yes, I spoke to OC about that sonic lance. From my understanding, that is your point upgrade. I believe the class upgrade may refer to your rank; however, it could indeed refer to a special class.

    Apologies, must've misunderstood Orbital.

You do not get an upgrade point when you get to your specialist class; simply the one you spent before transfers over. So if you put a point into accuracy for an attack, the equivalent attack inherits it.

If you want to think of it in another way, the spec. class replaces the normal point you get.

Either way it is a nightmare, just one that could have turned out real, depending if I’m right.

Lost slept. Lost slept and her dreams were nightmares.

The hate was a sea of red. So was the hunger. And it was growing. A sea of red surrounded Lost, and she tried desperately to keep the boat afloat. It was a metal boat, with a single metal seat running across, about a foot from center. In the back of her mind she knew it was a knight’s shield, with the tactical strap the seat.

A sharp scrapping sound issued from the bottom of the boat and a sharp tip sprang up from the bottom of the boat, before retracting. Then the torrent of “water” started to pour in. It was a thick red fluid, and she could smell the metallic tang. It was blood, fresh pumping blood. She also realized she didn’t have her armor on, she didn’t have anything one. She was completely defenseless. Quickly she placed her hand over the hole, trying to stop the boat from sinking.

Another scrape, and another, and talons and beaks ripped holes before fleeing. Lost moved first a hand, and then a knee, covering both holes. Another screech as a rock whizzed through, missing Lost’s face by inches. She reached out to cover the hole, and realized that hand had already been stopping another gash. She quickly moved her knee to cover the vacated hole. A panicked laughter started up her throat before she could stop it.

More holes were opened up, and Lost used elbows and feet to try and stop the tide to no avail. As the blood pooled around her feet, and then slowly climbing up her limbs, it burned. It started as a warm sensation, but as it grew thicker it gained more and more heat. More and more emotions flooded in with the sensation: hate, rage, hunger, and desire. Lost started to whimper, wishing to pull away, and knowing that would only sink her faster.

Soon it had encompassed her body, and only her head, held back and up, was above it. The entire shield-boat was swamped, with only the last few inches of the rim showing around her. It hurt so much that she didn’t even notice she was screaming. Her eyes rolled, wild with panic, and suddenly her cry was silenced as the boat rolled over.

A rush of bubbles stung her face, and she clamped a hand over her screaming mouth. Her throat convulsed, still trying to scream and suck down more air for more screams. Pain and emotions rippled up and down her naked body, burning. She felt like she was being deep fried alive. As she looked around, her eyes feeling like they had been rolled in salt and were being squeezed, she saw that the light from above was fading. She was sinking. She desperately tried to swim, but her limbs were leaden weights, fainting twitching from the pain.

Slowly, painfully, she curled up into a ball. It was almost black around her now, and a pressure was starting to build. She wished she could faint, even if it meant death, just to escape from the searing emotions and pain. The pressure increased, both inside and out, until she couldn’t tell them apart. Pain and emotion combined and tried to tear her mind apart.

Lost’s arms strained against her curled up legs. Her eyes were clenched shut. Bubbles occasionally ran out her nose, whizzing by her blond hair that trailed upward as she drifted downward. She was barely aware of that, of anything, as she tried desperately to hold on. She didn’t know how, but if she gave up, surrendered, breathed in the hateful blood she would be lost; worse her body would be controlled by the very things that hated her.

With the life and death struggle, Lost only hanging on by a mental fingernail, it took her a while to notice the pounding thump. The beat, like a massive drum, throbbed across her, suppressing and supplanting even the pain. Slowly, ever so slowly, she cracked her eyes open. They widened in surprise at what she saw. And what she felt.

In many ways it was like a beating heart, in others, like a mind. But at the very core, it was a stomach. It had a sentience, both wide and infantile, and a knowledge that it was the most important thing on the planet. It stood at the heart of things, and would grow to encompass the entire world. But it was what was trapped in there that took Lost’s breath away.

It had people inside of it. Not physical people, Lost knew with a sickening certainty, for their bodies had been rendered into food for its body, but their minds. Their minds, their souls, where trapped inside of this being, and it was digesting them. Like bright blue on this campus of red she could see them, inside the jellied throbbing mess that was their captor. It worked slowly and methodically on each and every one, knowing when it broke one, soon another would follow, and another: a dam bursting, filling it with information. And every second she watched another was added to it.
    >> [K] Lost !Ykpfge10hU 12/04/10(Sat)23:14 No.13032711
    Continued from >>13032695

Suddenly she could feel the things sentience turn towards her, the attention burning her like a raging inferno. Lost screamed, the last of her air rushing out, as a jellied tentacle reached out… and wrapped around her leg. Anguish flooded her, making all the pain and suffering she had endured so fair a candle in the face of a sun. Its touch was an anathema to life: to her life, her very sentience. It wanted to feed on her, to take her flesh into its flesh, her mind into its mind. It was huge, in mind in body, she merely a worm to hungry bird. She couldn’t fight it, she had to run, she had to—

A scream ripped its way out of Lost’s throat as she awoke. Only then did she notice that she had bolted upright, her hair flooding around her. Her eyes, wide in panic, swept around, not seeming to see what was there. Suddenly, as reality blooded back to her, the scream cut off, before she coughed and started to take short gasp of air that were sobs as much as breathing. Holding her head in her hands, she wept.

She wept because she was alive, because she was whole, because she had managed to escape. She wept for those people who were trapped, trapped by what she was now sure was the brood queen. That soon their very souls would be dissolved by the creature. She wept because she was glad, glad not to be one of them, and hating herself for that.

    >Phew. Done.

    >Identification verified, welcome back Major. You have one unread message. Open?
    >Opening message…

    To: “The Ranger”
    From: Annabelle Adams

When I received your message three days ago, I nearly fell off my seat from laughter. The kids walked in right when it happened – you should have seen the look on their faces! James thought I was going crazy, and Sarah thought I was sick or something. And for a minute, I thought you were joking. Until I realized you weren’t. But that’s when I almost fell off my seat.

That reminds me so much of when I first met you and John. Or rather, unknowingly. To this day, I still can’t believe the two of you did that. For two weeks! For two weeks I had no idea that I was talking to two people! I would have called the police if what you and John did wasn’t so sweet. And mind-numbingly complex.

But you were always the mischievous of the two, weren’t you? John was a bit more benign, if you could call him that. To think that you would do something like that – the scary part is, I KNOW that’s something you’d do. It was always you behind all the mean little tricks, always you crafting and plotting. I really wish you could be here for Sarah’s birthday. I just KNOW you would have made it memorable.

I sometimes wish you really COULD come back. Even if it’s just for a little bit. James remembers, but sometimes I’m afraid he’ll come to hate his father for leaving. Sarah… remembers, but not much. What she knows mostly comes from my stories, the pictures and bits of recording I have left. I just worry, you know? That she’s going to grow up with some father issues because of this. I know it’s tough, but please, could you send a letter to the kids?

With all my heart and prayers,
    Annie

    >Creating new message…

    To: Annabelle Adams
    From: “The Ranger”

Annie, I know what you’re trying to do. And I don’t know if I can. I know, I know, he’d probably want me to. But there’s still doubt, understand? For our whole lives, most people thought of us as a single person. A few others did. You among them, which the both of us are grateful for.

But I can’t shake this doubt from me, that I might unknowingly destroy him. While you’re aware that we were two different people, what about Sarah? She might unconsciously merge us. James would know, hopefully. But Sarah… I can’t do that to him. I mean, we share the same face and voice – for her, who was so young when John left, it would be easy for me to accidentally become him. Or the other way around. And I can’t do that. To him, or you, or her. I can’t destroy my brother; I can’t take his place; I can’t become him. Even if he came back as a ghost and begged me to, I can’t. I won’t.

But for what’s left, I’ll think about it. But honestly, I’m not sure where to start. What do I say? It seems so intimidating, really. I’ve sent men to their deaths, yet I can’t write a simple letter, huh? I’ll give it a shot. Just, don’t expect me to be him, okay?

With love for you and the kids,
    Walker

I could go for a short game now, if you're willing. Doesn't have to be the next full-on mission; we could run a training sim or something.

If not, then six tomorrow works. Hopefully it won't run more than six or eight hours.

"Well looks like platoon drafting is done for the night." Hawkes sits down with his back against one of the cavern walls. From his large coat he pulls a lightly charred book he found in Aggoria. The title of the book, at least what's left of it, reads: Br-ve -e- w---d. Whatever the hell that means. Hawkes flips open to his bookmark and begins to silently read.

    IRC is easy, just enter

    irc://irc.rizon.net/skirmishquest

In the address bar. If you don't have an IRC client, pick mibbit when the launch application pops up. Pick nickname, make funny talk at people. If you have a common use name, Wolf for example, it may be taken already. Just attach your rank and/or class descriptor (i.e. RR_Wolf) and you should be good.

    >Morning everyone... sheesh I'm tired. About to go off to help set-up. It looks like I'm going to be about 30 minutes to an hour late for tonight's game, more if we started early. But I will be there. If I'm not there when we start up, and we're about to go into combat, would someone mind posting this:

    >Start.

    >Lost sat in the belly of the transport, something akin to panic overtaking her. She told herself that panic was normal, everyone was nervous, but more then a feeling of dread was descending on her. The sensation, sensed more then felt, was coming back, the maelstrom of raw negative emotions.

    >It started as shakes, a faint tremble what stopped when she focused on it. It grew stronger and harder to stop as it took more and more of her energy to simply push back mentally against the torrent of hate and hunger. Soon it was getting so bad that the tremble had turned into an uncontrollable shiver that rattled her teeth and drummed her feet on the ground.

    >She could her the concerned voices of her teammates, even a steadying hand on her shoulder, but the sense of the xenos was overwhelming. Blackness encroached in her vision and Lost’s mouth began to froth as her back arched. The harness groaned as her suits servos pushed her own strength to new heights. Other soldiers were unstrapping now, trying to push her back into her seat, hold her madly flailing arms down, trying to check her airway without her convulsions biting off fingers.

    >Lost’s voice was a froth-gurgled scream:

    “OH GOD, THEY’RE EVERYWHERE, THEY’RE--”

    >The knight head suddenly lolled to her chest and the convulsions stopped.

    >On Walkers holo screen, a small icon pulsing yellow suddenly turned read.

    >ALERT: KNIGHT UNIT AB45-893K "LOST" ALPHA WAVE ACTIVITY AT 0%. VEGETATIVE STATE PROBABLE.

    >End.
