So the last thread kinda died while I was asleep.

Anyway, is the Gm or any of the other players up right now?

Yeah. The attack on the camp was started, and the paras had put smoke on an AA missile truck, and something airborne was coming at us from the north.

Well I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

Like I said in the previous thread, I think we might be able to work around timezone differences by having one single continuous thread at a time, where we can post and bump at our leisure. Kind of like the Infin/tg/ thread or Sororitas Quest.

    What do you guys think?

It could work, especially as there's only 4 active players plus the GM.
We'd have to keep an eye on it though and watch for auto-sage, but that's not too difficult to do.

Also it seemed like we didn't have Gato with us given the map the GM made. (I didn't notice it the first time around, probably because it was like 3am for me at the time.) Probably because he showed up after the roll call, but the GM said that we could discuss whether he'd appear on the mission or not.

So I suppose Lofty here will probably be using his roll 7 to attack that SAM.

    On the ground?
Not that much, likely some SAMs, and whatever reinforcements are quick enough to head to the prison camp on time. Probably not likely to be much in the way of armor.

    In the air?

The Myanmar Air Force's main frontline fighter aircraft is the Chengdu J-7 Airguard, which my character would be quite familiar with.

/tg/-based Planes & Mercs quest with, an admittedly forewarned by the GM, irregular session schedule.

Basically the players are a mercenary air squadron.

I'm not quite sure what system the GM is using, but he said he's mostly freestyling it.

Currently as you can see from the profiles we've got 5 players. The GM said we needed 4-6, so there's still room for one more.

Last session ended in the middle of a mission though, so if you're interested in playing you'd have to wait until the next mission.

I'll post the character creation options for you.

Just for reference, here are the company profiles the GM gave us. We had to pick one, so we chose Showtime Flight Services:

    Advantage Flight Solutions
    HQ: UAE
    Budget: Large
    Access: Global
    ROE: Restrictive
Advantage is a big name player, and is traded on the stock markets. Top flight benefits make it appealing, but expect HR to talk your ear off about 'unacceptable casualties'

    Showtime Flight Services
    HQ: Australia
    Budget: Moderate
    Access: European Defense
    ROE: Moderate
Showtime is the brainchild of Harold "Hog" Blackburn, a former RAAF pilot. You won't be asked to do anything morally reprehensible, and the parties are great, but the paycheque isn't great.

    Executive Outcomes
    HQ: Capetown, SA
    Budget: Limited
    Access: Former Soviet Bloc
    ROE: What Hospital?
Executive Outcomes does the jobs no one else will take. Calling their aircraft flightworthy is a stretch, but you're only required to get the job done, no strings attached.

    Air America
    HQ: Virginia, USA
    Access: American Defense
    Budget: Excessive, suspiciously so
    ROE: Variable
This sleek and all American operation works 24/7 to make the world a safer place for Americans. You get paid handsomely, but the moneypot almost seems too full.

    Rusforce
Budget: A case of Vodka and a two for one Frozen yogurt coupon.
    ROE: Liberal
    Access: Soviet Bloc

    Achmed's Discount Air Service
HQ: A cave, well furnished with rugs and betamax!
    ROE: DIE INFIDELS!
Access: We offer the ENTIRE range of fighter combat aircraft from Cessna and Piper! For you, I make special price!
Budget: Two Camels and my third wife, but no more, you are bleeding me dry, how do I feed my children! What? Fine, Three Camels, my third wife and this watch, but that is my last offer! What? No! How dare you accuse me of cheating you, FOLEX is quality brand name watch!

Last session we got a choice of three different contracts for our first mission:

    Mission Contract #1
    Location Colombia
Description: The Colombian government is contracting out a strike on an entrenched drug plantation and processing facility.
    Threat level: Low-Moderate

    Mission Contract #2
    Location: Taiwan
Description: The ROC is offering a coastal patrol contract to protect their surface interdiction ships working to stop human trafficking.
    Threat Level: Low

    Mission Contract #3
    Location Burma
Description: Amnesty International is organizing a direct action against a Burmese political prison camp, and requires both air cover and air support.
    Threat Level: Moderate

We picked number three because it seemed like it would pay the most, also because it was the most lulzy.

    To quote one anon:
    >I love it, two heavily loaded bomber/attack aircraft, protected by mach 2 lawn darts fighting for Amnesty International in the skies over Burma. And one of the bombers is loaded with napalm.

Sure, it's not like drones are already the most effective weapon used in the entire afghani conflict, it's nothing but matter of time till they're equal in efficiency in air to air combat, and even if it takes 2 or 3 drones to take one manned plane down, you're probably ahead of the game with it, since they costed, totally half of what that plane was worth.

In that case I shall get to work right away on my pilot.

Also, my research has turned up the F-4F, an export version of the F-4E currently in used by the German air force. It technically is a 'Nam era plane, but with modern avionics (capable of carrying AIM-120s)

Sadly, Europe seems to have something against attack helicopters, as the only dedicated attack platform I can find for any European nation is the Euro Tiger. If there was any way I could zip around in an Mi-24 or hell even an AH-6 I would be happy. Hopefully the GM will show up and give me a yes or no on the chopper question.

If we're honest, the Russians developed the attack helicopter in the 1970s. You wouldn't find anything that really fit that description in the 'early' jet age purchasing power era that this group seems to be in. And an F-4 with modern avi is probably beyond purchasing power as well.

Untrue. The AH-1 was deployed in the late 60s, and there were always the up gunned UH-1s and the infamous ACH-47.

The UH-1s widely exported, so that might work, but they are a little thin skinned for my taste. At least with the AH-6 I would have speed and maneuverability, not to mention less than half the size of the UH-1.

Not sure. The GM originally called for 4-6 players because he thought that that was the optimum needed for a really solid game.

As it is it seems like Sgt. Varn's gonna be our sixth member. I dunno, though. The GM might allow for one more, but you'd have to talk to him when (and if) he gets back to us.

The Mi-8 falls in line with the UH-1, it was a transport and utility chopper that they later strapped guns to. If Wikipedia is to be believed, then the AH-1 beat the Hind into production. The AH-1 is listed as being first flown in 1965, and entering service in 1967; the Hind was first flown in 1969, but wasn't introduced to the military until 1972.

All of this is moot though since neither of them could be classified as "European Defense" The only real Euro attack choppers out there are the Tiger, Brit licensed WAH-64s, and the Italian A129, all of which are far beyond the current funding limit.

I'm now playing with the idea of going for an F-5, but I'm not sure how well that would work with my idea for a CAS-speced pilot. I might just going for a middle ground jack of all trades sort of pilot instead. Or maybe a pure AtA since there is only one of them in the squad already.

The GM really needs to get back in here.

Yea, I'm going to go with the F-5 to start with. It was introduced in the early 60s and was build mainly for export and several European nations used it, so availability shouldn't be a problem.

I'll probably go with AtG or maybe JoaT, since the Tiger II's only real AA weapons are AIM-9s and 120s, and I'd really like to keep my options open for better AtG stuff later on (crossing fingers for an A-10).

At a glance a good standard payload would be:
x2 AIM-9 on wing tip rails
    x2 CBU-24/52/58s under wing
x2 Matra or LAU-05003 rocket pods under wing
x1 Mk80 series (looking at the 83 or 84 mostly) centerline

It's because in the BBS medium that we are limited to, AtA is just, well, dull. It's hard to describe a dog fight in an interesting way as well as make it mechanically viable without over simplifying, or being to complex. With AtG you have a much more varied assortment of munitions available to you, and can have fun using them in creative and different ways against a large selection of targets.

While I'll admit most air superiority fighters are sexy as hell, but ground pounders are just fucking cool. I'd take dropping several hundred pounds of FUCK YOU on some poor sap over splashing some guy with an AMRAAM any day.

I wouldn't mind being the dedicated ground attack. It seems like the end game would be fun. Everyone else is fighting Raptors and Terminators, while the lone bomber has to handle AA guns, SAMs, terrain, the occasional fighter who thinks he can get a kill, weather, and aiming.

    Dice, dice everywhere.

It's a matter of balancing getting paid large amounts of money, and staying alive to spend those large amounts of money.

The Taiwan job probably would have seen us dancing around with PLA fighters, which would have not been fun.
The Colombian job, while not difficult in itself, would have earned us the ire of the drug cartels. We'd have to kill every single drug lord there to make sure that a hit squad isn't sent after us (we should be paid to kill people; doing it for free is a bad precedent).

Well that and the fact that it honestly sounded like too easy of a mission, for me anyway. At most the drug dealers would have some of the 'lighter' SAMs available on the black market to deal with COIN aircraft. I doubt they'd have been able to do much against ground-attack jets and dedicated bombers.

Also, I didn't think it would be much fun killing a drug-runner plane. Turkey shoot and all that.

    And finally-

    Name: Roger Sowman
    Callsign: Neck
    Nationality: British
    Age: 34
    Aircraft: English Electric Lightning F1
    Specialization: Air to Air
Abilities: Lead Storm, Where do you think you're going?
Background: While a talented pilot, his tendency to clash with superiors and get drunk whenever possible eventually resulted into early retirement. Since then, he has been looking for any work that could utilise his skills, and hopefully help him keep his bar tab open...

About the wargear, though- is it possible to rig the Lightning with Sidewinders or Sparrows? Historically it has either 2 Red Tops or Firestreaks, both poor-mans Sidewinders, about the same size but half the weight of a Sparrow.

    >accuracy glamis

Yes, I know historically accuracy is more glamorous, but gameplay comes first Captcha!

    >About the wargear, though- is it possible to rig the Lightning with Sidewinders or Sparrows? Historically it has either 2 Red Tops or Firestreaks, both poor-mans Sidewinders, about the same size but half the weight of a Sparrow

    Well according to this: http://www.vectorsite.net/aveeltg.html

    >Sidewinder fit had been mocked up on a Lightning in 1982, but that was the sum of it.

So unless the GM allows you to spend some money on having making some modifications to your aircraft, I think you may have a bit of a problem. On the positive side, your specialization is with your gun armament anyway.

Yeah, last games I've been in I took either a ground-poiunder or EW/SEAD. I just like the idea of getting on the deck and blowing shit up. Might as well try out something more inclined to survive a dogfight.

I'm not overly concerned over the missiles, not with a pair of 30mm ADEN cannons. Should be able to zoom-and-boom rather effectively.

I personally hope that Neck and Hammer will be able to participate, since that's another interceptor to keep enemy fighters busy and another attacker to handle CAS and low-altitude attacks.

I'm torn between moving towards an EW airframe with some ground attack capabilities, or go completely AWACS and go for one of the dedicated EW and C3 aircraft.

You could always try and grab an E-2, I think that would be a lot easier and more manageable than a full on Boeing 707, much smaller crew requirements as well.

I question the usefulness of such an plane in our squadron though. Do we really need such a large EW platform? It's not like we need to cover a whole wing worth of planes on a massive battlefield. I would think a single craft with ECM/EW pods would be enough to cover our flight, not to mention still be able to fulfill a SEAD role and/or be able to at least hold their own in a fight.

An E-2/3 would require much more resources to operate, and require another plane to watch over it. It would also eliminate any chance of steal our flight might have with its huge active radar systems.

Admittedly, the Hawkeye might be a little overkill for the level of operations we would engage in. I was thinking of an R-99 if I was to go the dedicated AEWC route.

For a more versatile aircraft, I was thinking of either an EA-6 Prowler, or if I can afford it, an EA-18 Growler.
    >> Sgt. Varn !q8XtSW4.HY 12/08/10(Wed)20:34 No.13082405
    >>13082218
I think the EA-6 would be the best pick. It fulfills the EM roles while still being able to handle SEAD and it's own defense in the air.

I don't think we'll be able to get anything new and shiny like the Growler for some time. Besides, the only big advantage they have over the Prowler is logistical. The US Navy didn't want to have a bunch of different plans all with different part requirements, so they built an EW craft on the Super Hornet frame. Besides, the Growler gets most of its EW capacity from under wing pods.

    Powerman 5000- Action
