Walker sat in his command seat, observing the battle from the holo-screen. He was tense, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the armrests.

Hadn't he promised? To his men? To that man? That he would never do something like this, ever again. That he would do everything he could to bring his men home, to avoid sacrificing them. He promised them. He promised himself. His brother's grave.

He rubbed his eye sockets. He felt old and frustrated - wasn't this the same as last time? Here he was, safe and sound, while his men were fighting for their lives. He was powerless to help them, or save them. All he could do was give them orders.

Blood splattered all across the train deck as a Mantisoid emerged from a hidden tunnel and beheaded Warsaw and Weird both in one strike. Sand Roaches swarmed around two figures in hulking power armor and a gaint spiked ball. One of the figures, already sparking, was finally brought low by the crush of bodies. The other, multiple rents visible in his armor made a leap for the open hatch on top of the Armored Gyro. Diving through, he slammed hard into the wall of the Gyro, the hatch closing behind him.

"Damn Shot, glad you and Betsy were here." Blinky gasped as he sat up from the sprawl he landed in.
"Looking pretty bad out there, I think we're all that's going to be in Team Nuke The Bitch..."

The Gyro growled, then roared as it went for it's final run, crushing all manner of bugs under it. As Blinky grabbed hold of the Nuke and prepared his rockets, a hiss started building in intensity over the angry roar of Betsy.

As first one elite guard was swerved around, then another, the hiss became a definable sound, coming from the driver's seat of Betsy.

Betsy's engine was burning out, but where they were going they wouldn't need it. The Gyro made it's final approach, slamming into the back leg of a Mantisoid, launching it airborn. The Bug Queen was dead ahead and there was a Raging Armored Gyro heading straight for its face at over 150 miles per hour. And transmitted over the unit coms were the last words of Shot.

Ghost sat in the bitank, doing his best to push back the bugs when the Major's voice come over the com essentially ordering a suicide charge. To him it felt like giving up, and while the situation was dire he couldn't help but feel his life was being thrown away. It was true he was a clone and he we just upload to a new body, but he knew that one day they would run out. There would be no new body waiting for him, either imprisonment with the network or oblivion.

A [TA] is a Tactical Adviser. They were a unit created mainly for those who entered the game late, and to, well, tactically advise the men on the ground.

Of course, as things went on, with various developments, the [TA] position is kind of... well, it overlaps with many other positions, and it's now the place where dead soldiers go while they wait to redeploy.

Walker traced the remote detonation button on his screen. He could press it. End the battle, then and there. Spare his men the horrors of being ripped to shreds by angry xenoforms.

But that would be to admit the situation was already lost, that he couldn't save any of them. That he lost faith in them. It would deny them a proper death against their enemy. Sure, they would be torn to shreds, or impaled, but they would be slaying their foes with their hands as they did so, mocking them.

He continued to trace the little symbol. He could end it, then and there. Yes, he could...

But no, he wouldn't. It wasn't fair to them, to anyone. He got them in this mess, and he would do his damned best to get them out of it. He didn't owe them that - he was expected to.

They don't tell you this when you're recruited, but being eaten alive by an atomic fireball hurts like a bitch. It's honestly one of the worst experiances Shot's ever had in his lifetime, as a ripe old man of 70.
