    Uzumaki, The Eternal Spiral

Of all the Elder Evils who seek to reform worlds to further their twisted agendas, Uzumaki, The Eternal Spiral is the least threatening - and yet one with the hardest influence to escape. Crafted by unknown hands (or perhaps by no hands at all?), Uzumaki is a colossal spiral of petrified root and shell that sits atop a great dias surrounded and composed of smaller and equally perfect spirals; overlooking an underground ruin of massive spiraling columns, stalagtites and a sea of long-petrified thralls with bodies twined and interlocked together as their dead faces still stare at The Eternal Spiral in awe.

Though pulsing with god-like telepathic, psychic and supernatural abilities, Uzumaki is nonetheless at the mercy of gravity. Given life deep underground, Uzumaki desires only to exist on the surface so that it might have better control of its reformation of the planet into the ultimate spiraled shape. However, such ambitious goals take a lot of energy and followers - which the latter, unfortunately for Uzumaki, only ever appear in finite numbers. Thus, the destruction caused by The Eternal Spiral's awakenings has always been limited to a single location throughout the eons. But as the ages pass and the old legends are forgotten is when Uzumaki stirs once more - when the new kingdoms build upon the bones of the old...

    Signs of The Eternal Spiral
    ---------------------------
Spiral Enthrallment: What begins as a slight fascination with a spiral shape ends with a full-body transformation into something outright alien that is wholly devoted to The Eternal Spiral.

    * Faint DC 45 - A few individuals start to take great interest in spiral shspes, both in collecting and crafting them (pottery, clothing, artwork, etc...).

    * Moderate DC 35 - Those who have found themselves slaves to Uzumaki begin to mutilate their bodies to resemble spirals by breaking their bones and wrenching their limbs into coiled shapes. Some thralls actually mutate into choiled shapes naturally with elongated, wirey limbs and tongues. Either way, few thralls survive this process. Non-thralls will begin to feel on edge.

    * Strong DC 25 - As Moderate, except thralls change form naturally and their survival rate is increased. Non-thralls may begin to experience traumatic changes to their minds and bodies as well, now. Those who are lethargic and exhausted may find themselves slowly turning into 'snail people' over the course of one week. Those who remain within zones heavilly-tainted by Uzumaki's influence could turn into horned spiral beasts. And those charismatic few who draw attention to themselves or crave admiration may transform into a short-lived spiral medusa or devouring spiral.

    * Overwhelming DC 15 - As Strong, except all but a handfull of survivors will mutate into either a snail person or a devoted spiral thrall.
    >> Anonymous 01/14/10(Thu)18:09 No.7589146
Nature's Spiral: Such is the power of Uzumaki that even nature, space and time spiral under its influence.

    * Faint DC 45 - Subtle changes in the weather cause small whirlwinds to spin about with increasing frequency, streams and rivers are pockmarked with tiny whirlpools, fiddleheads grow in abundance even out of season and tiny snails are seen in the daytime more than usual.

    * Moderate DC 35 - As Faint, except steam and smoke rising into the air swirls in an unnatural spiraling manner that filters back to the ground above the hidden entrance to Uzumaki. If the smoke is from a funeral pyre the spiraling ashes breifly take on the visage of the deceased. Clusters of spiral galaxies appear brighter in the night sky.

    * Strong DC 25 - As Moderate, except nature is fully under the control of Uzumaki - grass and trees grow and warp into spiral curls, clouds swirl overhead in terminating spirals, and whirlwinds and whirlpools are a common event and have much greater force.

    * Overwhelming DC 15 - Any unfortunate attempting to leave Uzumaki's spiral influence is now doomed to failure. Hurricanes center over the affected area and may remain motionless for days on end with winds that can manipulate any object Uzumeki desires. Any rapid movement of the air (via running, exhaling heavilly, swinging a weapon, etc...) creates a hurricane force wind that travels in a cone towards the direction aimed; flying creatures or objects that stir the air heavilly are instantly swallowed by a tornado and grounded. Colossal whirlpools likewise devour any vessel on the open water. Reality itself is also warped - any individual who tries to leave the spiral will find all routes leading back into themselves, as well as being affected by time differently (1 hour spent in the fringes = 2 months passed in the spiral).

    Combat
    ------
Uzumaki, lacking movement, sits atop its dias and emits a slow and steady greenish-blue pulse that reflects off of the other spiral designs in the cavern and illuminates all. The danger comes from staring at an illuminated spiral for more than a few moments or else risking being mesmerized. While mesmerized the victim must make a Will save DC 25 or begin to petrify via Uzumaki's calcifying aura. In addition to the threat from the hypnotic effect, the spirals around the cavern pose threats all their own - treading on the uneven growths counts as difficult terrain as they grab outward to try and trip any would-be champion (DC 20 Balance check to keep from falling), and the small and medium-sized spirals that line Uzumaki's cavern stab outward to slay intruders who venture too close.

After Uzumaki's HP is reduced by 50% (or if all combatants are dead or have retreated to the surface) it will cease pulsing and begin accumulating a massive quantity of mana (all spellcaster characters will feel this and should be given the hint that something powerful will soon be cast). After 10 rounds of drawing mana, the stairway leading to the surface will begin to corkscrew upwards and eventually lock into place with the completed spiral above ground (taking a total of 10 more rounds). The round in which the stairway locks and Uzumaki has finished storing mana (on the 20th round) Uzumaki will cast Time Stop on its lair with no save afforded. Any characters remaining in the chamber will be instantly calcified and locked in stasis until a time in the distant future when The Eternal Spiral stirs once more.

    Templates
(with the exception of Snail Person and Spiral Medusa, all templates below turn the creature's alignment lawful evil)
    ---------
Snail Person: A sad fate awaits the lethargic or those who tire themselves wandering on the fringes of Uzumaki's influence. 'Snail People' are humanoids who have slowed down enough to be snared by Uzumaki, and thus are reformed into a more fitting shape - that of a generic snail. Snail people retain their original form's size and a few of their facial features but nothing else. Only a Wish or Miracle can undo the curse, but ONLY after Uzumaki has been driven back into stasis or less likely, destroyed.

Spiral Medusa: Uzumaki bores into the minds of all within his spiral and his influence can rattle even the kindest humanoids. Spiral medusas are nothing more than these unnerved unfortunates suddenly cursed with very, VERY long hair spun into large spiraling patterns over their heads. Sadly, those that would rather not accept this gift find themselves unable to refuse - as their hair turns upon them at the first sign of rebellion. Thus, spiral medusas unwillingly (or proudly!) go about their daily lives while their hair hypnotises all who gaze upon their spiraling patterns. Templated humanoid (with required CHA of 14+) is constantly Fatigued; take 1 CON damage per day that does not regenerate until their hair is cut or burned off; gains a Hypnotic gaze (as the spell) to all targets within 30'; gains reach 15'; always makes a grapple attempt after any successful melee attack; is never considered flat-footed; CR +2.
    >> Anonymous 01/14/10(Thu)18:12 No.7589201
Spiral Thrall: To some, the mesmerizing pull of spirals is so great that they themselves desire to become one with them. This process is both painful and terrifying and yet wonderous to those in the grip of madness. To others, however, becoming a spiral thrall starts simply out of survival. As the powers of Uzumaki manifest ever stronger, humanoids that band together find safe shelter harder to find. Out of desperation even good beings may begin to deny entry to wayfarers, hoard food for themselves and develop a mob mentality. These like-minded groups of individuals don't even realize until it's too late that they have become uncaring thralls who are wound around each other like a ball of vipers. Templated humanoid's movement speed reduced to 10' and loses any other types of movement unless magical; -8 penalty on all skill checks (except climbing); reach 10'; can make a grapple attempt after any successful melee attack; CR -1.

Horned Spiral Beast: Within Uzumaki's spiral of influence there are isolated areas of concentrated taint. Those who seek rest in these areas will quickly be infested with cone-shaped blisters that gradually harden and elongate. Given enough time the growths will sharpen and extend from every inch of the victim - even from their eyesockets. Templated humanoid takes -8 penalty on Search and Spot checks; gains blindsight 60'; gains a gore attack (2d4 +STR bonus); deals an extra 1d4 piercing damage with every unarmed attack; deals 1 point of piercing damage when grappling/grappled; CR +2.
    >> Anonymous 01/14/10(Thu)18:13 No.7589208
Devouring Spiral: Perhaps the most dangerous of Uzumaki's mutated victims are those that turn into devouring spirals. Ever craving the attention of others, these lonely individuals have en emptiness eating away inside of them. Literally. Devouring spirals may wake one day to find what used to be a simple scar or a tattoo on their body has warped into an actual moving spiral that consumes them inch by inch until they have collapsed into themselves and the void within. Within this time period, however, devouring spirals are driven to that which they desire most - a lover, a work of art, or perhaps a rival they were always jealous of. Templated humanoid (with required CHA of 14+) gains an opening on their body that acts as a Sphere of Annhilation that grows larger every moment; any object or equal-sized or smaller creature that moves adjacent must make a DC 20 STR check or be drawn into the opening and destroyed utterly; takes 1 CON drain per hour; when CON reaches 0 collapses upon itself and is destroyed without a trace; CR +4.

This is pretty fucking awesome. Good job OP, but I would give it more hit points. 240 isn't all that much when you think about it, a dedicated band of PCs with proper gear could take that out well before it gathered enough mana to time stop everyone.

Of course, that's if they are properly prepared. Having them stumble onto it out of the blue, now that would fuck someone's day over. The templates are pretty interesting as well. Good stuff to subject the poor party to before hand.

Actually, if you read Uzumaki, you'll see that the protagonists stay sane despite the horrors throughout the entire manga. I'd imagine they are the few with enough resistance to keep a level head about them during all this.

Maybe the tendrils in the cave force transformation, maybe the only path that works to get to the center is a spiral.

It definitely cares. Soichi explained what the spiral cares about: sucking things in and drawing their absolute attention. In the end, Uzumaki was an attention whore, and they truly did defy it with their love, although they died in the process.

Honestly I think that instead of being able to kill Uzumaki, the only way to beat it is to leave as soon as someone starts getting obsessed with spirals. Once the town gets cut off from the outside world you're fucked and there's nothing you can do about it.

Don't tell your players this and laugh while you watch them try to defy the inevitable.

Knowing TTGL, the end of the TTGL vs Uzumaki fight would probably play out with TTGL using Giga Drill Breaker, hitting Uzumaki in the dead centre. Uzumaki then starts glowing green, and spins in the opposite direction.

And then reality itself turns into a giant robot. A giant robot the size of REALITY ITSELF.

Don't forget the dimensional peculiarities of the village. The spiral eventually start affecting the dimensions of the place, until the only exits from town start curving and spiralling around themselves. The only way to escape once the paths begin spiralling is to move through them faster than they can spiral outwards.

They can't escape once they know enough to escape. They have to be able to not lose the encounter in some way for it to be possessed of any meaning as a campaign.

Speaking of dorfs, even while it's sort of late for the thread, the 2D Dorf Fort has an engraving, at least for demon's, where they're smeared to a spiral.

I don't think the stats were harsh enough. Too low hit points, not enough continuous damage. We could have used a better description of how just looking at the monster would force you to roll each round to avoid being hypnotised and then start losing constitution each round as you turn to stone until someone snaps you out of it, or you pass the save. That would make it a much more dangerous boss fight. But I still think that it's better suited for a level 10-12 party of five definately not for epic levels.
