Hey /tg/, I was bored while 4chan was down yesterday, so I made this list for you.
Maybe I can broaden your Miniature Wargaming horizon a bit.

Will also dump some pics to show different scales and miniature manufacturer.

Really my only complaint with these systems is that I have never found anyone I'd wish to play with.

The two people I know who play Flames of War sneer at Warhammer (not 40k, Fantasy) for being childish and simple and dislike Battletech for reasons unknown, and the only Wargaming club I know of Exclusively plays these games and look down upon Flames of War for not being realistic ENOUGH.

So yeah, once I find someone who'll make these games fun, I'll look into it. Thanks for the help, though.

Retreating is an insidious tactic, because then you'll have to invade and add Italy to your empire. And then is when you'll have problems, in three years you'll leave them alone or lose all your money on help funds.

I've started getting interested in historic minis as well lately, which I suppose means I'm getting old. However, I'm not sure I'd be able to get enough players to actually get something going.
    >> Anonymous 01/15/10(Fri)07:04 No.7598745
One problem with getting started with historics for me is that not only do you need other players, you also need other players who are interested in armies of the same era and geographic area as you. A lot of the rules allows you to make pretty much anything within a very broad limit, which means I could do a an army of vikings and find out that the only other player in my area has ancient egyptians. Thus, there will be no way for us to play without a very silly time travel scenario.

Just find an appropriate movie. Loads of gamers change genre because of a recent movie with a big battle in it they like. Like Gladiator created loads of roman players. WW2 is perpetually popular, with lots of big budget movies. Vietnam less so because most people think of the movies where the fights are small skirmishes in jungle rather than say, the big urban battles.

You could try DBA, it's a very simple and popular game and requires only a dozen bases, because each base can represents some thousand men.
You can paint a army in about a week.

If you get people interested then and want something bigger and more complex you can use the minis for Impetus or Field of Glory without having to rebase.

Is not a bad thing, several systems like the DBx series or Impetus manage to do this quite well by covering a large number of similar periods in one set.

    >>7598822

Yes, but even if you use a system like Fields of Glory, which works for any army that doesn't have gunpowder, you still risk getting silly combinations like Holy Roman knights vs Roman Empire legionaries or vikings vs samurai. Not saying that this wouldn't be awesome, but it kinda ruins the point of playing a "realistic" game.

not so viable due to change of scale in amount of people. you can kind of get away with it with early renaissance and earlier but after that armies start getting too big to be comparable. You go from 20,000 a side being gigantic to, well, by Napoleonics you can stick another 0 on there. even small engagements at later periods end up being way bigger than average battles of medieval and earlier.

I played a very interesting Samuri vs. Romans game once. The Romans lost by the way, largely just because the Samuri had a fuck load of attacks, and everyman came with a bow and two swords or some shit. We largely got gunned down by arrow fire before we could even reach their front lines. And then they charged...
