Good heavens is that the time already?

    IN OUR LAST EPISODE

Our intrepid heroe's led by Ace Pilot David Lister are transferred out Garma Zabi's honour guard and placed into an Independant Corps, and then shuffled off to Hawaii military base for practice with Marine Mobile Suits.

We arrived just in time to take part in the Battle of Midway. The largest naval battle of the entire One Year War.

It is August the 11th, Universal Century 0079.

You have just landed on the Hawaiian Naval Base, your Gaw has overstrained it's engines carrying you and will be unable to leave until repairs are made.

In any case, the enemy fleet (possessing at least two Aircraft Carriers) is roughly half an hour away. This is enough time to reload and re-arm yourselves.
Alternatively, you can attempt to switch your current rides for Marine MS. You're current hangar contents will be stored in a MS hangar for retrieval later.

    >Is the enemy trying to land, or will this just be a naval engagement?

    >Do we know much about the makeup of their forces?

You know for a fact that there are at least two carriers, so the possibility of air attack can't be ruled out. You also know that the fleet possessed surface navy vessels, but you couldn't say off the top of your head which was which. You saw a lot of smaller ships and some bigger ships.
You also think you saw landing vessels, so a ground attack could occur as well.

You'll know more if you try to contact local command forces. You're currently standing on the airfield.

    >A marine MS would lend itself to a stealthier sort of attack, but we....we don't do stealthy very well, do we.

Actually, Marine MS are less stealthy than any other kind of MS as minovsky particles don't spread underwater, and even if they did, sonar would be unaffected by them.
The main draw of Marine MS are that a) They can travel in water as well as land, and b) They have water cooled MS scale beam weapons.

This possibly the first time we've really been outgunned: All the cruisers and battleships in that fleet will bomb the island flat, and us with it, if we stay on land exclusively. The Hidolfr is the only unit we have that can engage them at that range, and its only one MS. If we don't take the fight to them, they'll pick us off.

Agreed, Staying on land means the Feddies can snipe from a distance and do blitz attacks with their MAs.

I say we take the fight to them and try sinking the Carriers first, If we can take out the carriers the enemy MAs won´t have any place to reload and refuel, Meaning they can´t keep on fighting.

That means the battle will go smoother for us if it drags on.

Is the Feddie surface fleet going to be spreading Minovsky particles? If so, we're going to want to use our Marine MS to spot for the Hildolfr; attach some sort of comms cable between it and our suit.

Zol stays in his Gouf Custom, meleeing the fuck out of any ships he comes across.

Elaine in a second Marine MS, to cover us while we do the artillery spotting thing.

Jolyne to stay with the Hilda, assuming her Zaku Cannon has decent range; she'll help give it some cover while shelling the Feddie fleet.

Hmm. I do think we should put Jolyne into the Zock. And we definitely want to use our artillery advantage here; I think the Hildolfr outranges anything the Feddies have in that fleet (aside from the aircraft of course), so the more damage we do as the fleet approaches, the easier the job of our MS forces once the close-quarters fighting starts.

But Zol in a Z'Gok does sound reasonable. Switch my proposed force to that.

And we can have the other guys from the base cover Jolyne and Hovis while Zol, Elaine and Dave head out to spot for the artillery and pick off ships.
    >> Kemal von Hindenburg 01/16/10(Sat)13:49 No.7618743
Here's the relevant Zock info from MAHQ:

Produced at the Principality of Zeon's California Base during the latter weeks of the Universal Century Era's One Year War, the MSM-10 Zock was one of the last amphibious mobile suits to be produced - though its form represented the shift from mobile suits to the new mobile armor concept. With the thrusters in its armor "skirt" and short, non-functional feet, the Zock could best be described as a hovering gun emplacement, capable of covering all angles of attack with its front-and-back symmetrical design.

FIXED ARMAMENTS: photon maser gun, mounted in head; 8 x mega particle gun, mounted in torso (4 facing front, 4 facing rear)

Priority targets for the arty are the carriers and the battleship. If we can, let's try to pull a genuine Second Midway on the Feddies and shell the carriers when they've got planes rearming and refueling for a strike; under those circumstances, one or two shells at most should be enough to make those carriers go up like it was July 4th (or November 5th, for the British contingent).

Landing craft are the third major target, after the carriers and the battleship.

Once those ships are all eliminated, shift to a general attack on whatever the Feddies have left as they attempt to flee.
    >> Sciencegar Sciencebolt 01/16/10(Sat)14:03 No.7618919
Using the Zock does seem like a good idea, but we need someone to pull anti-air, otherwise the Hildolfr will be cut to shreds by planes. Reubens should stay with Hovis if Jolyne is taking the Zock.

Sorry, I was having my Dinner.

Oh and for people discussing the Hildolfr Vs Zock debate, I'd point out at this point that in my overarching plans, if you had opted to go with the Marine Corps, Hovis would have arrived in the Zock.
Also, if you'd stuck with the Marine Corps, I would have given you these.

About Hilda's gun vs the enemy fleet.

Whilst the Cruisers probably lack 300mm cannons with her range, the Battleship might not. Hell, it might actually be able to outrange the Hilda.
Ultimately, there's only one way to find out.

    >post a basic summary of what they do in the meantime?

Z'Gok = Excellent Marine MS with Beam guns in the arms and claws, torpedo launcher in the head. Equivalent in power to an F2.
Z'Gok Command = Same as above but 33% better.
Gogg = High powered beam cannons in the chest, torpedo launchers and big claws on extendable arms, old but dangerous.
Acguy = WHAT IS LOVE? Essentially the same perfromance as a Zaku, armed with machine guns in the arms and head vulcans. The cheapest of the Marine MS, but also the smallest, and most adorable.

Consolidating my final proposed loadout for ease of use.

    SPOTTING/STRIKE FORCE:
    Lister: Command Z'Gok
    Zol: Z'Gok
Elaine: Z'Gok (Acguy is just too slow to keep up, looks like)
    Flanagan: Grabro

    SMITING FORCE:
    Jolyne: Zock
    Hovis: Hildolfr
Assorted other pilots from base: Acguys and Goggs

Spotting/Striking force gives our arty targeting data and picks off targets of opportunity. Smiting force smites the Feddie fleet with the targeting data we're giving them; the pilots that aren't Jolyne or Hovis are there to give them AA and close-range support.

Priority targets are battleship, carriers, landing craft/amphibious assault vehicles, in that order. The exception to this is that if we have a chance to hit the carriers while they're preparing an airstrike for launch, we take it.

Sounds good, you organise with Hovis that on green flares he starts shelling on that position, on red he stops. You then check that the Z'Gok Command can even do this (it can.)

You tell the base commander that you're setting up a squad of mixed AA and Artillery Assets on the shoreline to support him, he agrees and sends a squad of his AA units and Artillery to your positions to boost your effectiveness.

The base will soon be spreading high density minovsky particles to obscure the enemies radar and communications, so further communications will have to be directed via Lasercomm to either each other or to the orbiting Luggun AWAC's planes.

This process has taken 20 minutes. The enemy is 10 minutes away. The MS forces are moving forward slowly along the seabed to ambush whilst the Subs hold back as bait.
You are currently still on the shore, wishing that just once you could visit somewhere and not have to shoot things as soon as you get there.

The Hawaiian islands have hardwired comm lines between them (telephone, data cables, etc.), so we should probably use those for our spotting if at all possible. That way we don't have to worry about either Minovsky density or a fragile floating cable between us and the base.

The best parts are without a doubt: The theme tune, Ming and Brian Blessed.
    In no particular order.

    Anyway.

You begin stepping into the pacific ocean for the first time as Ookawara gives you a quick crash course over the intercom.

"You've got two movement modes which is activated by the red toggle on your left console. It has the setting LD and MS on it, it should be currently set to MS. If you switch to Long Distance mode whilst in the water, your MS will go horizontal and activate it's backpack propellers. You're underwater speed will vastly increase up to about 100 knots, and your head torps will be more accurate. But enemy sonar will have an easier time hearing you. Also keep in mind that your ballast systems aren't as fast as thrusters, you'll sink slower than you can move up. Or any other direction for that matter. If you have to dodge, dodge into cover or straight up. Just don't raise so high that you reveal yourself to enemy surface fire. Watch out for Anti-Submarine planes. The base is low on Interceptors, and they wont attack until the enemy forces get closer to the base. Well, I guess that's it, good luck."

You keep on walking, just as the water is lapping over your head, Ookawara talks again."

"Wait! One last thing, when you fire your particle cannons the coolant systems flush out expended cool[shhhhhkkkkklkt - connection lost]."

"Uh boss? Should we go se what the end of that sentence was?"

"No, I can guess. These beams are like old recoilless rifles, we fire them and we scoot before the enemy uses the bubble stream of ejected coolant to track us."

    "Really? You guessed that?"

    "Yeah, isn't it obvious?"

You are now fully submerged underneath the pacific. You are currently in MS mode and there are 6 squads of friendly MS ahead of you trying to stealthy set up an ambush, you can see the Subs on Radar, they are somewhat closer to you.

It's highly unlikely that it'll get that bad. For a start Kamille had probably the highest rated newtype sensitivity in history. That's why he kept seeing dead women everywhere.

The fact that he was in a Tomino directed show didn't help either admittedly.

We head up as far as we can on LD-mode before the Feddies can pick us up, then switch to MS-mode (figure about the sub line, or maybe a bit ahead of it). The MS line waits for the fleet to pass over it. When the fleet does, (at about 22-23km, for best effect), we and Zol pop up, kill the battleship, and launch flares for the Hilda to use against the carriers. Then the MS ambush comes in from the rear, the subs come in from the front, and we and Zol are smashing anything that we aren't marking for the arty to take care of.

You greet the captain via contact-comms.

"It's nice to see some more reinforcements! We're pretty sure the feds have already spotted us this far out, but we don't think they've spotted the Mobile Suits. If you want to attack the enemy ships, the best time would be to zoom ahead on LD when the ambush springs.
Alternatively, if you have to travel forward without being spotted, there's a deep trench made by falling colony pieces, you can sneak up on LD mode all the way to the enemy fleet. Except it's pretty fraught, that far deep even small scratches will implode your suit, and there's a LOT of periodic falling debris. That's why our Marine Suits didn't take the route."

Well, the Indiana Jones routine has always worked thus far. Then again, this is our first time in a marine MS, so I don't think we're acclimated enough to pull such risky maneuvers in a suit we have no idea how to use. I say we play it safe and launch in LD mode with the rest of the subs when the attack begins.

You opt for the trench run. The captain directs you and using MS mode you stealthily drop down into it.
The cockpit creaks ominously as the pressure rises, but the computer assures you everythings fine.
In the gloom you switch to low light and then flick the toggle to LD mode.

You guide your one man submersible through the deep interconnecting troughs gouged in the seabed by chunks of colony that criss-cross the area. Your route is illuminated up on a computer map for you to follow.

In the deep dark, you spot a large chunk of the colony fall into your path, you and Zolomon nimbly dodge it, but in the silence, finding and dodging falling colony pieces is difficult. You keep an eye on the artifical ceiling for weak parts.
Two minutes in and you think your getting a feel for aquatic mobile suits, they can't dodge to fast, so you have to think ahead, but since everything else is slower as well it all balances.

Shortly after thinking this, pretty much the whole ceiling collapses. Teaches you to get so confident. You push forwards as you see a gap to the other side. Yeah hear Zolomon signal out behind you on laser comm
    "Crap."
It doesn't sound like he's in trouble but you don't have time to toggle your rearview camera to see what's happening. You dart through the opening and dodge a couple of additional pieces. You switch to MS mode and turn around.
The debris has blocked the way back, but there are still holes enough to see Zolomon unharmed on the other side, and get a lasercomm off.

"Sorry, I had to pull back to stop my suit from getting tagged. What now?"

There are alternate routes Zolomon could try alone if you want, but then he'd be without help in a hostile environment.
Attempting to clear the debris will probably cause sufficient disturbance to alert the enemy forces.
There have been numerous places where you can simply escape the trench and move into the ocean proper.

You tell Zolomon to walk his way to the other ambushing MS whilst you go on ahead. He salutes and walks his way out carefully.
You turn around and switch to LD mode and move off. Another two minutes of dodging slow moving debris and your onboard computer tells you that you should have moved far enough.

You find a hole large enough to travel through and poke your head out.

You have guessed well and come out underneath the enemy fleets.

You can see three large targets surrounded by smaller vessels above you. You can also see a couple of Submarines travelling ahead of you.

You aim yourself upwards at the nearest big target. You then switch to LD mode and zip upwards. As you go up you prime your torpedo launchers and fire a salvo ahead of you.
Your enemy Torpedo detector goes off as you rise, but hopefully you'll be too close to the ship before it get's close. Your torps hit the armoured underside of the ship with a muffled crump.
Just to make sure you toggle your beam cannons and fire a shot from each arm in the same locations. Jets of bubbles stream out of the coolant ports, and arms (and claws) forwards you crash into the cracked underside.

You manage to tear through the underside of the vessel and begin pushing up. Below you, the persuing torpedoes self-destruct to prevent them from hitting the ship.
You tear upwards through small rooms and corridors until you come out into a large hangar.

You leap off the Carrier deck a couple of long iron shafts flying around you. You dive into ocean and switch into LD mode and head towards the battleship. Explosions rock around you as advance towards it. Behind you, your sonar registers 18 objects plunging into the sea, it's a fair bet it's those Balls with claws you saw on the deck.
To the west you can still register explosions, the fighting at the ambush site must still be carrying on.

Being in the water increases the cooling rate of your beam weapons, both beam guns are now fine for use.

Speaking of which, you push forwards, dodging yet more point blank fire and fire into the flanks of the battleship with your beam weapons. You turn around. Hoping that with the Battleship behind you, some of the balls will hesitate to fire. You fire a couple shots from your beam cannons at the oncoming enemies, taking out one.
The other begin firing at you, evidently they don't think their weapons are capable of harming the battleship. You dodge just in time, a couple of the iron spears ricochet of the curved surfaces of your head, but luckily do no harm.

You have to dive to the side, and you fire off another beam, scoring another kill.

Diving on ballast would take time, but if you switched to LD mode to do it you wouldn't be able to fire back. But on the other hand, you're running out of cover.

You might be able to win by sticking it out, but it'd be risky.

Diesel fuel man. No point in taking fusion fuel away from everything else that might need it when there'd be litterally tons of Diesel fuel around. That and if they refit older existing Battleships it's much cheaper than putting new reactors in.

Either way I still support the 'jump out of the water and bash in the Bridge' idea. Besides it'd be easy to locate and shoot the Magazines from above. Just aim for the decking next to/behind the turrets.

Feck. 4chan ate my post. Plus I think were autosaging.

On the other hand were close to the end, so I'm conflicted about starting another thread.

    Anyway.

You switch to LD mode and dive under the Battleship, coming swiftly up the other side. Like a salmon you break the water and leap directly on the vessel.
A giant turret with 900mm cannon is directly to your left, you fire your beam at it.
It doesn't explode, but it's no longer traversing. So theres that.
AA weapons and secondary guns swivel to meet you and you leap into the superstructure to try and give yourself some cover, and also to start climbing to the bridge. Your claws rent huge gouges in the vessel as you climb, small caliber bullets pinging off your armour. Occaisionally you stumble as a secondary gun manages to get a bead on you, but your armour takes it.
You soon reach the Bridge, lean forward and fire your torpedoes.
Unfortunately, this is the time that the Battleship fires it's main guns, nearly knocking you off with the violent recoil. (You note that the turret you shot didn't fire)
Some of your torps hit, and the area is obscured by smoke and explosions.
You are unsure if you have killed the target, but there are Don Escargot orbiting ahead and the Balls are beginning to surface.
Now might be the best time escape.

You can't spot the other one from where you are, but the one you just hit is currently being heavily shelled and belching smoke and flame. It's moving slowly and seems to be deeper in the water than it was a few minutes ago. It's probably going to sink shortly.

Your claw grasps at where the Bridge used to be, and squeezes. As you do so, you fire off another shot from your beam arm.

If that doesn't do it, you're not sure what will.

You dive headfirst into the sea, the Balls fire continuing to miss or bounce off. (A Gogg might have been a pin cushion by now though...) and switch LD mode on the moment you hit the water.
You dive as fast as you can, your ears complain from the extra pressure, but you deal with it. It's nothing worse than you'd get in a colony section with a faulty pressure gauge.
You dive down, being hotly persued by the enemy Marine Armours and falling depth charges. Your cockpit bounces as the concussive blasts rock your mobile suit. Eventually you reach the trench network. Do you risk it with all of the Depthcharges, knowing that the Balls would have to be suicidal to follow, or do you continue west, hoping to meet up with Zolomon and the other Marine forces?

You fire a salvo of torps at the balls to scatter them and then dive into the network of trenchs and tunnels.

Fragments and debris are falling constantly where you are, and you endevour to get out of dodge as quickly as possible.
You find yourself zipping through small spaces between falling colony mirrors and support structures, behind you the Balls follow, making occaisional shots with their harpoons, but you suspect that they're running out of ammo now.
You can hear the muffled thud of depth charges above you making the situation down here worse.

The must be saturating the entire area with them.

The entire roof in front of you collapses and you force yourself out of LD mode and swing back to decelerate. You turn around and take out the lead persuer with your beam cannon. You then fire your last salvo of torpedoes into the corridor section made by the curvature of a colony segment that you just came down. It collapses, trapping, hopefully dealing with your persuers.

You search for alternate exits and luckily find a small one you can pass through. About a minute of yet more debris dodging the depth charging stops, and it becomes easier going.
You pop up at the sub line. You can see several Jukons in the area tending to battle damaged MS's. It looks like the entire force has moved back to this area.
