The three llanowar elves, completely focused, in perfect unison flexed their fabulous muscles. The air was filled with a writhing, sweaty, green-flavored energy as the summoning began.
Sweat poured down their faces, turning blanch as they grimaced like gimps in clown make-up.

But their power was not enough.

The planeswalker watched as the farmer threw himself at the dusky scaled wurm.

"Stop!! don't throw your lives away!!"

The farmer stood defiant as the wurm bore down and trampled through him, it's pitchfork barely knicking the thick scales of the beast.

But the peasants did not listen. Through the wheat covered plains, they took up their arms, and one by one, fell before the wurm. But with each farmer crushed beneath the might of the wurm, another wound appeared on its massive body.

The wurm, bloodied yet still charging, was only steps away from the planeswalker, before the seventh farmer struck. He drove his hoe deep into the wurm's flesh, it cried in pain as it fell, but in it's death throes lashed out at the planeswalker. The farmer shoved his master out of the way and took the bone shattering blow.

The wurm lay dead, struck by a half dozen and one farming implements, a half dozen corpses lay in its wake.

The planeswalker cradled the dying farmer in his arms.

"I...I'm sorry...I don't have any healing salves..." he said, biting back his tears.

"we owed our lives and livelihood to you sah" the farmer spoked through bloodied gasps, the light of his gentle eyes fading.
"and today, you collect that debt"

The planeswalker cradled the body in his arms, until the warmth faded from his hands. White hot tears fell down his face.

We all have to understand that when Magic was starting out, they probably didn't have the clout or the money to hire better artists than the ones they had. Wizards (or whatever the fuck they were called at the time) only picked up the game on a trial basis after a few years of consideration and only when they felt that Garfield's new collectible card game idea was something they could tap into.

And at the beginning it wasn't like they could hire staff that gave a shit about fantasy bad-assery or understand how bad-ass these Plainswalkers were whilst throwing golems and flaming rhino monks at each other. (Oh shit, just caught that pun up there). At the beginning, some people in positions of serious creative artistic control didn't give a shit about the game. See link and search for "Sue Ann Harkey"

The art itself was pretty good at times, I agree with that. But the extremely washed out colours and "historicalness" of it just didn't fit the rest of the game at all.

Some of Quinton Hoover's old cards in alpha/beta were good, I think.

I really like this picture, it looks like a woodcut illustration from an old fencing manual or something.

The art for Magic these days is certainly to higher standard of proficiency, but I don't really like the over-the-top aesthetic it has these days.

    >>At the beginning, some people in positions of serious creative artistic control didn't give a shit about the game.

Look at Homelands as the best example of inner conflict. From what I understand the creative director wanted it to be the first real story based set, whereas the design team just threw together random powers and creatures.

"Oh awesome idea: let's make a card that removes Poison Counters and another that's a Summon Hero who gets more powerful with every other Summon Hero. We'll finally get people to play with Benalish Hero and thus Banding!"
"Uhh, the Creative Team is talking about utilizing vampires from the Sengir clan and warriors of the Serra clan."

A tear fell beside the now fallen farmer. The White Planeswalker looked up. In his eyes now burned not a fire of chaos, but a fire a vengeance. He stood up and searched through his mental repertoire of more potent allies.

"These loyal souls may have given their lives for me, but now you face a foe who will gladly repay their debt!" shouted the White Planeswalker.

From far above the field, the clouds began to part, and a single beam of light struck the Green Planeswalker. The beastial summoner was unable to move as he saw another glint of light appear above the horizon. As the light approached, he was that it in fact was light reflecting off the pristine golden armor of an angelic champion, speeding forward with the tip of its sword outstretched, ready to pierce the flesh of he who would so wastefully treat life.

Three hairy protrusions erupted from the ground, engulfing the angel before it could reach the Green Mage. The enormous arachnoid continued to emerge from the ground as its master smiled. The angel fought valiantly, as eight enormous eyes bore at the winged being.

Amidst the conflict between the angel and the giant spider, both Planeswalkers felt an evil chill permeate the battlefield. Both had to concentrate to not plunge into their repulsive aura.

As the White Planeswalker looked down in sickness, he noticed the farmer by his feet begin to writhe on the ground, blood and ichor erupting from his mouth and eyes. Both Planeswalkers scanned the battlefield as all the fallen beings jerked in a similar fashion.

The White Mage was fortuitous enough to instantly cast a protective circle around himself as the fallen farmer swiped at his leg. Soon all 7 farmers and the wurm were staring upon the White Summoner, a glazed look upon their eyes.

"Ahh, nothing like the games of children to resupply my immortal army," proclaimed a shadowy figure on the horizon.

Ok, I'm back, and I'll make this quick and dirty for you all.

The dark, cloaked figure noiselessly approached the battleground, flanked by two bare-chested demons. The other Planeswalkers, in fear for the safety gave each other a silent order and united their abilities together, hoping the combination of White and Green Mana would be able to overpower these dark beings and their foul master.

A beam of white and green energy combined between them, fueled by their being. It generated a force that erupted out, decimating their fallen allies, the two demons, and impacting against the chest of the Black Planeswalker.

As the dust cleared, there hopes were dashed as beneath the dark cloak was not a frail, ancient evil, but something out of a gothic sculpture. The Dark One's alabaster skin showed his blue veins as well as his rippling abs. Now shirtless, the Black Mage approached the two laughing at their futile attempt.

"Now," scolded the Black Planeswalker. "Now, I will show you true power."

    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)21:15 No.7708424
The bird pecked and scratched as it twittered. It was maddening to the red planeswalker, his brow furrowing with each strike. The blue planeswalker had nothing to do but smile as the pecking brought awesome thoughts and strategies to mind.

The magpie fluttered and dove at the red wizards head. "ENOUGH!" shouted the muscled man with nothing but a crimson kilt on. His rippling sinew was highlighted by sweat pouring from his body as the fire was stoked in his palm.

The massive fireball burnt all the hair off of the kilt wearing sorcerer as he hurled it. "HALT KNAVE!" demanded the blue wizard as he flexed all the muscles in his torso. The red mage lost his concentration. His spell feel to the ground in a heap as it dissolved into the air.

The magpie struck one last time with its mighty beak. It was the last straw. The red planeswalker's legs buckled beneath him as he fell to the ground. His taught muscles finally tensed for the first time in a many thousand years. The last sight was of a sweating, perfectly tanned planeswalker, his perfectly toned sinew spewing blue mana. A tiny magpie chirped a song happily on his shoulder.
