Kel passes you, unleashing another bolt into the creature's face as he runs out of daggers. You ignore his impassioned orders to run, and sprint forward, bringing up your wooden spear.

The black thing moves steadily backward, screaming in a voice made of fire and hate as you come up, driving the splintered stick into its broken eye and through, further and further into its skull.

The end snaps off as you drop down, bringing your hands up to defend yourself. But there's no need.

The huge, black monstrosity falls to the ground, legs splayed in every direction as its head hits the dirt, a pink, viscous fluid leaking from its eyes. The fire is gone.

There is nothing but the dull red now.

Yeah as said, thank Kel, then ask about the thing. From the looks of it he's seen such a beast before. Are they common? Do they plague the village?

You ask, in no uncertain terms, what the thing is, while thanking the hunter for saving you from possible burning death. Kel responds, panting as he loads another bolt, that it's a creature of fire from the pits of the earth, dwelling beside the hot, molten rivers beneath the surface.

There are more people coming, with the rest of the hunters leading. The entire village is coming to your defense, with whatever weapons they can carry.

"I've only seen one of these once before," Kel says in between gasps of air, "It killed at least a hundred before they put it down. But that was far from here. Very far."

"Thank you," you tell him, patting him on the shoulder, being careful not to hurt him, "I'm glad you were here to help me."

He smiles, turning to the bleeding corpse to retrieve his daggers, "It's nothing. I would do the same for any others in my family."

You thank him again, and tell him you are glad to be a part of his family, and then you give him the best hug you can muster without hurting him, bending down on one knee and wrapping your arms gently around his armored frame. He hugs you back, assuring you that he would gladly do whatever is necessary to make sure you and the rest of the village survive.

As your farmer fire support arrives, swinging shovels and scythes in every direction, you ask Kel where it could have come from. He says that the only tunnels he knows of in this area lead to your cavern, and if it came from there, it would either have run into you a long time ago or approached the town from another direction.

The butcher/farmers immediately set to work on the thing, searching for breaks in its armor and sliding their tools into the gaps, prying great, shining plates of metal off of its steaming hide. Sahl and the others ask you if you're alright, swarming over you like anxious parents as you assure them that you're fine.

You ask Kel about arming the peasants, just in case, but he replies that the quickest way to disable them or turn them away is to hit they eyes, and the only way you'll get close enough to do that with an axe or a sword is by losing dozens of men distracting it. The best weapon for dealing with them is a crossbow, which would be difficult to make with the tools at hand, and are more expensive than you'd think. In his opinion, it'd be a waste of effort, as things like this aren't exactly common fare in the deep forest. Still, if you think it's necessary, he'll see about training more bowmen.

He was in a large town to the far West, over a hundred miles past Fain. It crawled up out of a mineshaft, slaughtering workers and spitting fire. Most of the local militia were swordsmen, near-useless against such a thing. Only the bowmen, aiming for the eyes, eventually brought it down. He was part of the closest garrison at the time, and he arrived just as the fight was ending. It was horrifying, but it was by no means a common occurence.

The hide is covered in a tarnished, silvery armor that seems to absorb light from certain directions. Kel informs you that the plates are incredibly sturdy, and can't be shaped or softened by anything he's got. They were forged in a place where rock runs like water, and without a bellows and a furnace, there's no way he can get a high enough temperature to melt it.

As for the rest of it, the meat is horrid-tasting but extremely nutritious in small quantities, fortified with a great density of essential minerals. One of the purifying organs has been known to contain gems, and almost all of them are made of a material that is entirely fireproof and heat-resistant, yet flexible. The eyes, if undamaged, are covered by a transparent casing that can be flattened into sheets to make windows. As for the limbs, the blades are solid pieces of metal like the armor, and can be used in weapons or farming implements.

The butchers, directed by Kel, tear apart the smoldering corpse, prying off the armor and cutting the thick meat into manageable chunks. The plates are still a bit hot, but you manage to carry them pretty easily, dipping your hands into the stream after setting them down to cool off.

It takes about an hour and a half to break the heavy parts into sections and move them, and after that, it's just a matter of removing the useable portions and discarding the rest. Even this close to the town, scavengers will carry off whatever is left behind.

You suggest that the limb-blades be used to fashion new scythes, as the current ones are dull and chipped, obviously unsuitable for such a fantastic town. Mal says that, without proper forging equipment, they'll just be brute-forced into wooden poles, and could easily be taken out and used for something else, if necessary. They won't need to be sharpened for quite a while, either.

A halberd would be longer and thus slightly more difficult to use precisely/carry, the axe blade could interfere with impaling, and the spear point could interfere with chopping.

I can make the skirt longer if you guys want. It really isn't a huge deal. Odds are that I won't get done by tonight anyway. Eventually there will be a peasant kid sitting/standing in Maya's hand. Possibly one of the elders looking up at the shenanigans to show relate heights and all that jazz.

Also, my vote is for getting back to work since it is still morning (?). Those fields aren't going to fix themselves.

Frost giants are generally dicks and we won't have a large physical advantage over them. I'm somewhat opposed to seeking out others.

I'm not sure. I was thinking that we'd continue working with them for at least a few years. I suppose eventually we'll need to reveal that we've been helping them, once people start asking about all the new methods and technology that they have/will have. I feel that that's a big enough goal for now.

To be fair, we have no idea if our body was generated when we got here or if it was a cross-dimensional level exchange of consciousness. We probably won't know one way or another for awhile.
