You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war, magic, and heavy, armored beasts. You have slain a Demon of the Deep with a pointy stick and branched out into alchemic magic. Industrialization ahoy.

    Last Post from Previous Thread:

You stow the glove and head back to the fields, deciding to try your hand at a different kind of magic tonight. So far, you haven't used your casting for anything useful, so this will hopefully give you the capability to put your magical mind to work. For hours you travel back and forth from the fields to the forest, lugging back as many shrubs as you can carry. By lunch, you've got a wall and a half done. By sundown, all but the last eighth of the second field's wall is complete.

Your epic saga continues to unfold, with Jack fast becoming the hero of a revolution he didn't intend to start, and the wealthy, fat-cat lords of Aku's Earth stomping on him at every turn. Aki faces of with the Scotsman at the end of the episode, which you end with a cliffhanger, the apprentice holding the Scot against the wall with a magic shield and thousands of demonic minions approaching from the sky.

In your cavern, you test the glove, pressing it against the cracking wall and imagining the surface becoming whole again. Nothing happens. You repeat the procedure over and over again, focusing on the wall through the glove, but you feel nothing. The tablet's whispers almost sound like laughter as you switch to ice magic, summoning a block of ice the size of your head with practiced effort and laying against it as you sleep.

The night's disappointment is erased by the morning sun as you eat and set to work again, mulling over various bits of information you've learned from the books you're going through. The Demon of the Deep isn't in the Forest Lore text, but you didn't really expect it to be. Instead, there are things like Roken and Sarroths, resembling Tiger-Bears and Spider-Lizards, respectively. The forest holds creatures far beyond the pitiful, stupid averron.

Work progresses easily and quickly, and by sunset you and the farmers have finished planting/transplanting the third field's windbreak as well. All of the Flashweed has been planted, the meager supply of Beet seeds has nearly run out, and once the load Bem is (hopefully) bringing back is in the ground, the irrigation can start. With this in mind, you return to the story, having the Scotsman escape his captors by turning his artificial leg into a rocket and flying THROUGH the demon swarm, while Jack brings a local overlord down with an army of working men and women brandishing pipe wrenches and hacksaws.

After sunset, you meet with some minuscule degree of success with the glove, learning that the mindset required to 'operate' it is quite a bit different from that which brings you ice. You press it against the wall, imagining repair, and one tiny crack seals in a flash of green. You fall asleep almost immediately, completely drained. It's like going through the same thing all over again. Maybe once you've got a bit more stamina you can start learning more rapidly. Until then, it'll be slow going, but you're happy to be learning. You could never do this kind of thing on Earth, after all.

Your library now contains books on Economics, Medicine, Forest Lore, Mining, Sailing, Construction, and Woodworking, with a biography of a noble Lieutenant-General to round it out.

Planting the remaining Beets will take no more than a few hours, and completing the windbreak will take until mid-evening. After that, the irrigation system will finally be tested.

As the sun returns to the sky you awake, feeling out of it but otherwise fine. The close call with the Demon was sobering, but the important thing is that no one was hurt. You can take care of yourself for the most part, but the villagers, without their hunters... Well, Lark can probably summon thousands of bees or something, right? They survived just fine before you, and there is no way you can protect them from absolutely everything. Best not to dwell on it.

After breakfast, the Beet seeds Bem picked up go in, with practiced ease. No more than a few hours pass before this season's planting is done. For the next few months, you'll be getting to work on some of the more 'industrial' things, like making sure these people actually have nice, safe, warm places to live, instead of collapsing wooden huts. Without a moment's rest you pick up your improvised shovel and head off into the woods, picking and choosing the shrubs the women told you have the best berries.

Dirt comes up, plants go in. Before you know it, it's lunchtime, and you're diving back into the books, going over the map a little as well. This area, heavily forested though it is, is scattered with tiny settlements, broken in places by town hubs and occasional fortifications. Far, far South, the stream that runs through Ballassas feeds into a much larger river, one big enough to support sizable trading vessels, if the proportions on the map are correct. You might want to have a look at the Sailing text next.

Lunch ends quietly, and you get back into it. The minutes turn into hours, the sun sweeps across the sky, and as the ground slowly turns a reddish-orange, you drop the last small bush into its place, to the cheers of your helpers. It's time to test this little marvel of engineering you've built.

Gates come up in sequence, letting the pure, clear water flow in, trickling over the bumps as it makes its way down the channels. It fills them all, leveling off at the ends like you expected. Perfect. With any luck, the harvest this year will be plentiful, and crop rotation will increase yields even more. You're well on your way.

It does. Quite well, actually, as long as the gates are not repeatedly disturbed.

The process of making lye soap is actually quite easy, once you've got the lye. Since it is used extensively in tanning, and furs are this town's main export, the farmer/chemists have plenty of experience with it. With the appropriate portions of lye, cold water, and lard, tallow, or oil, you can make soap with a kettle and a spoon.

What, we're no where near finishing the Tale of Samurai Jack.
We still have to tell the part about how Aki tried to trick him by posing as an adventurer named looking for a jewel that legends say could send Jack back to the past. The two bond over their shared adventures, and eventually Aki begins to suspect that this man isn't as horrible as her father made him out-but is still conflicted over her loyalty to Papa Aku. The two spot the jewel, and Jack speaks requesting to use its power and in response it bathes them both in a beam of light -a giant six-armed figure materializes to attack them. Jack refuses to fight and is blasted by the creature’s jewel-beam. Aki attacks it but is blown away, and the six armed ceature enlarges. Jack attacks the monster to defend her and is victorous, but Aki shatters the jewel.

That night, there is a minor feast to celebrate the end of planting, and the Elders discuss, among many things, clearing space for more fields. The merchant the town received a little while ago commented on how much everything had changed, but he had been elsewhere for about a year, so he probably didn't suspect anything. As expansion continues, though, it's going to get difficult to explain to anyone who comes calling how exactly a village of 98 constructed a bathhouse the size of a barn, heated by a furnace burning methane harvested from the cesspit, with indoor bathrooms on top of it all.

Your continuing saga takes their minds off it for a little while, filling their heads with the magic of modern cartoon epic. You introduce the apprentice Aki to Jack, disguising her as an adventurer looking for an artifact that could send the Samurai back to his home. Suspense builds and builds and builds until you bring the hammer down, revealing the artifact to be a jewel possessed by a demon, forcing Jack to defend the person he thinks is his friend, only to have his last hope crushed as she smashes the jewel.

You suppose that could count as the season finale. There is no end of talk about how Jack will recover from this, and if he will ever get home at all. It feels pretty good, entertaining them like this. As you walk the short distance to your rocky home, you start to go over all of the stories you've heard. From the old Greek myths to Lord of the Rings, all the way down the line. There should be no end of 'new' material you can share with these people.

You retrieve the glove from its pouch, pressing it against the damaged cavern wall and focusing on it, through it, the very idea of repair. The runic circle on the palm glows in your mind, and with a burst of soft green light, a small crack seals. You've never felt so tired in your life.

Lying against the rock, you let the glove fall to the floor, slowly drifting off to the sound of the tablet's whisper.

Over breakfast, you go over the principles of soapmaking with the chemists. They've heard a small bit of it from various sources, but never put it to practice, and never felt they needed to. Your short lecture on the effects of sanitation, and the things that can happen where it is absent, convinces them easily. Lark can heal minor wounds with his talents, but where major surgery is required, he's not as useful. These people are their own doctors and nurses. Either way, a great deal of the work will fall to the villagers, since they'll have to manage sealing the underground structures. Also, we'll need to design them carefully to allow for proper ventilation and such.

But if it works... defensible, warm without a great deal of heating, relatively inconspicuous; there is a great deal to recommend subterranean construction methods.

Scavengers pick apart anything in the forest that is not being actively watched. You could hide fields in this manner, but you would need at least one guard at all times. As well, the Governors are currently forbidden from performing regular inspections, as it wastes resources needed for the war effort. An impromptu visit from a government liason is always possible, but this is, to put it mildly, a shithole. Thirteen days have passed. It is the fourth month of the year, gradually getting warmer. The Flashweed is growing marvelously, already starting to spread slowly, creeping towards the shadows of the windbreak walls. In another month and a half, you will be able to harvest a fair-size crop, though it won't reach maturity for yet another month after that, if you want the best-quality oil. Irrigation has worked wonders, doubling the rate of growth if you want to believe the farmers' excited exaggerations, or increasing it by about half if you listen to Mal and Sahl. Either way, you're getting a lot of pats on the back... of the knee.

You've started a sort of communal school, helping the Elders teach the less-literate how to recognize letters and spell out words. It's slow going, but now that you have a page-turner, ingeniously manufactured from a thin stick and a short, flat brush, you can read without struggling to manipulate the tiny books with your enormous blue hands. The farmers, when they're not learning how to read, are alternately building, making soap, and forging, in addition to their normal duties.

The chemists don't have it quite right yet, but they've come a long way from their first batch, so strong it could take the skin off. Clothes, utensils, and dishes now look like they never have before, a vast improvement over their original status.

The Hall and the storehouse are no longer in any danger of collapsing, and in the latter case, can actually keep pests out reliably. Two completely new cabins, built partially on the old stone foundations, have taken shape on the Eastern side of town, while repairs to the huts are ongoing. It was decided, by unanimous agreement, that the families with the most pressing needs will occupy the new homes first, and the Elders will move last.

A small, stone-lined cellar has been constructed beside the Hall and the Beet garden, and filled with the ice you've been producing as part of your practice. Berries and wild vegetables will keep for days in there without spoiling, which is no small thing to a village of medieval peasants. Your cold aura doesn't last long enough yet to make a real difference, but you're hoping that if you increase your skill further, you can make it permanent, like the stream charm.

As lumber is harvested from the edge of the forest, the stumps are pulled (mostly by you, of course) and the ground tilled. A brand-new field is taking shape beside the fourth, and at the rate you're going, should be ready for planting by next season. Some of the sub-quality wood has been turned into javelins for your use, and practice arrows for the few bows one of the hunters has managed to make. They're difficult to use, and would make an army instructor cry, but are important for teaching the basic principles of ballistics, which will be important once you acquire some real crossbows and later, manufacture guns.

Besides all of this, you have also managed to get through the Forest Lore and Medicine texts, and are now working through the Sailing and Woodworking books. Interesting stuff, to say the least. At night, you work your magic in the beaten cavern, tearing it up with ice and repairing it with alchemy. You can throw ice beams around like cruise missiles, cast grenades separately or in groups of up to 17, chill the whole cavern 20 degrees for eight hours, or summon a block of ice the size of a mattress. The alchemy business is much slower, but you have figured out how to force whatever force you're manipulating to see 'sharpen' as 'restore order'. All of Kel's knives and bolt-points shine like silver now.

At sunset on the thirteenth day, Raik reported that he had not only succeeded in shaping an Averron plate into a pipe without burning it, but that he managed to soften a piece of Magma Steel enough to bend the corner. I find myself wondering how we can get more people. As a rule, security emerges from strength; strength emerges from many people working together, as helpful as one well-educated frost giant is. Perhaps there are other impoverished villages, or maybe refugees from the war, that we might be able to recruit?

Worth thinking on, at any rate. In the meantime, I'd like to propose that we focus on the chill aura spell exclusively during the next timeskip; I'd like to get refrigeration down pat as soon as possible. Hell, if we manage to completely master the concept we might even be able to weaponize it, if we can link it to ourselves and make the temperature drop great enough.

This would be a good plan, if you could guarantee that it went the way you want. Perspective puts an interesting spin on it, though. The map you have shows a tiny corner of a nation that itself occupies only a tiny corner of the world. Its Northern border is hundreds of miles long. The area you reside in, a poor, rural sector, is as big as Rhode Island. There are 23 more. The capitol sector is the size of Kansas.

This nation is at war with a nation that is twice its size. You are a 14-foot tall, one-ton Frost Giant. A dabbling mage, vulnerable to fire. If you want to make the Governor an offer he can't refuse, you're going to need a little more than ice grenades.

We'll end up on the aristocracy's radar as soon as someone notices the massive improvements we've been making to the town in any case. Getting immigrants is a long-term project, I think, so we might as well get started on it sooner rather than later; by the time it starts showing serious results we might well have already been noticed.

As for job openings... we're building housing, and there's plenty of room for more farmers, hunters, or whatever skilled craftsmen we might be able to get in a village on the rise. Get the people, and there will be ways to apply their skills.

It has been five days. A full-grown Averron, wandering at the edge of the forest, was brought down yesterday, resulting in a brief influx of meat and chitin armor. Raik continues to improve his smithing, using the smaller pieces of chitin and tools, weapons, etc. that were cast off as 'unusable'. He has succeeded in melting a tiny chitin plate and pouring the resulting liquid into a clay mold, but the solid piece, once cooled, was as durable as a wheat cracker. It snapped in half at the slightest pressure.

In between teaching, construction, and reading, you've been working out, training for stamina and endurance, as well as swift, quiet movement. The hunters tire too quickly to catch you, but you can't outrun crossbow bolts. Their eyes can spot you moving if you're in front of them, though a mud-and-leaf camouflage helps with that. As for sound, you're very good at sneaking, but your size makes it difficult to avoid every little twig and branch.

Bem went off to Fain on the first day and came back at sunset the next, with enough beet seeds to cover the remainder of the last field, some pound cakes from the bread shop, and some assorted small items, such as the next volume of the smithing manual. At your request, the Magma Steel was transferred to your cavern, where it sits behind an enormous boulder. If anyone does come inspecting, they're unlikely to find it.

Magic-wise, you've focused almost exclusively on the cold aura, compacting it into a cellar-size space and trying to extend the duration. You've found that it can be used offensively, testing it outside on one occasion. It froze every plant within a three-foot radius, once you'd figured out how to visualize a rapid, massive drop in temperature. If nothing else, you can straight-up freeze any animal or human near you, regardless of armor. In the time department, the maximum the aura can maintain is twelve hours, after which it dissipates. Pouring more energy into it only seems to make it colder. If the tablet truly holds near-infinite power, it's doubtful you've hit an absolute limit. It might just require a different approach.

On the fifth night, you decide to venture into one of the tunnels. Despite Lark's warnings, which he got second-hand anyway, there might be something useful in them, like valuable minerals or gems. They might even lead to other towns or caves near them, straight under the crust. With your armor on and your axe handy, you search for ones that have a slighter slope, and find a few, among the 90 or so that branch off down here.

Stepping in, you find the walls to be incredibly smooth, extending in a nearly perfect circle all around. Even with your eyes, you can barely see fifty feet in front of you, so you unfasten the pouch where you keep the tablet, letting its soft blue glow spill out ahead. It seems brighter now, and the whisper louder, but you have plenty of practice ignoring it. The tunnel continues for some distance before branching, with one end moving sharply to the left and downward, while the other two paths curve right, one slightly and the other at a large angle, both remaining level.

Once again, consensus changed when I was almost done with the timeskip. I need better timing.

Solid log construction ie. with stacked logs the size of a tree, has a fairly poor R-value. They dont keep heat in very well. This is especially true because wood will expand or contract as it's exposed to moisture.

Modern Log cabins are normally built using sealants and outter coatings to keep excess moisture out. Old Cabins built back in the day had a tendency to develop gaps between the logs as they expended and contracted. These gaps were routinely sealed with equivilants of concrete or clay which REALLY dont hold in the heat in the middle of winter.

What we should be going for is a good solid wood framed house with walls built out of lighter boards which can have insulation put inside. Sawdust is classic and good form of insulation it just has a tendancy to catch fire easily which is why people stopped using it with the advent of electricity.

Wood to be used in the construction of houses should be stored some place where the humidity can be controlled or is near a constant level. (dryer is better) Building with 'green' wood should be avoided as it'll change shape as the moisture seeps out of it.

You retreat from the tunnel long enough to pick up a suitably chalk-like rock with which to mark the walls. It makes a nice, gray line on the tunnel surface when you scrape it across.

You head down the sharp right curve, marking the entrance and then the wall, periodically as you travel. It winds left and right, back and forth, in a disorienting pattern, but a few quick backward glances confirm that the marks are still on the walls. After about ten minutes of walking, you find that the tunnel straightens out, and angles down, at a slope that would make a dubious climb without handholds.

The question now is, indeed, how we can possibly turn the gems into applicable wealth. Or can we perhaps use them as magical foci? That would let us use at least some of them in a productive manner without needing to actually get rid of them. We should ask Lark about such things.

We now have a giants horde with which to help the village.

I think we give the body to the villagers with a small portion of the gems, and keep a SECRET 'giants horde' with which to help the village when it heeds it.

Because if a whole lot of fucking valuable gems show up in a backwater farmtown we're drawing all kinds of attention.

    Pic VERY related.

It's roughly 45000 carats worth of gem.
