    Previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/7787876/

A few months ago, you were the girlfriend of a hero, frustrated with his inattention to you and constant focus on fighting evil and determined to do something about it. You became an aspiring sorceress, learning magic in the hopes of becoming a villain and forcing your love to finally focus on you fully.

A few weeks ago, you were a terrified and abused vampire bride, watching in horror as you were frequently tortured by the older vampire Adrienne and committing one dire sin after another in your injuries and desperate hunger. The stress and pain changed you quickly, and after attacking and killing Adrienne you have been moved by your master to the city of Itonia, where you have amicably met his other scions and slaughtered dozens of the living for your own benefit.

And now, after a rash of theft, murder, kidnapping, and blackmail, you have stolen or built the tools and lairs you need to grow into a power in your own right. You are the dark sorceress that you once wished to be, although the price is more than you ever thought you would pay.

You have promised to meet with your former lover in two days' time.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 02/01/10(Mon)13:40 No.7874338
Sheryl, a young streetwalker you recruited to your service with gold and promises, has proven herself quite useful as your agent amongst the living. As she was pound by a fae pact to serve you, you have no fear that she will turn against you in any but the most egregious circumstances.

You possess numerous summoned servitors, each with their own set of abilities, are ready to do whatever you ask of them. Their magical and mundane skills can do what yours cannot, and have proven invaluable in almost all your successes thus far. Two sprites, a mimir, three earth spirits, an air spirit, an assassin imp, a warling, two faelings, an apprentice shade, and a spellrat are ready to carry out your will however you (or they) see fit.

    ***

You awaken to a cool and foggy night. You managed to finish your year-long binding spell yesterday after a great deal of work. While you could test it tonight, your scheduled meeting with your ex-boyfriend is tomorrow; if you wish to make any preparations or do anything before going to see him, now is the time.

    What will you do?
    >> Undead Monstrosity 02/01/10(Mon)13:52 No.7874452
I should note that I'm hoping to finish this quest today if all goes well; if you're not destroyed I'll write up an epilogue. The heroine is unlikely to encounter situations which will significantly alter her personality following this one, and I don't have much interest in making this a quest that's more about gathering power than watching the main character evolve.

    So much frowny face.
There are many many situations in which a person can change and adapt, as well as the society around that person.

Think of a real human-- does her life end after she's reconciled or broken up with her ex?

Your praise is appreciated. I should point out, though, that I will need you to provide a course of action before we can move forward.

Your ex-boyfriend will expect you early tomorrow evening, probably; your note specified day but not time. Unless you wish to arrive later, you'll have to complete all preparations you wish to make tonight.

Alright, we need a plan of escape if things go bad. Do we know where we are meeting our boyfriend? If we do, we can have the three earth elementals hollow out the ground beneath the meeting site, save for a few supporting pillars. Then, if we signal it, they knock out the pillars, causing our boyfriend and his party to fall into the pit trap, buying us valuable seconds to make our escape.

Alternatively, we can see about contacting Trudan and get him a message, preferable the night of the meeting, telling him where he can go to find the "party" that robbed his warehouse and the pawnbroker. If things go well at the meeting, we help our boyfriend kill Trudan's assassins, but if they go poorly, we use the confusion to escape.

The trick to this plan is getting a message to Trudan and also having arrive on time, but not too early.

    >The trick to this plan is getting a message to Trudan and also having arrive on time, but not too early.

So you're hoping that by the power of plot he arrives exactly when we need him to? Yeah, somehow that doesn't seem like what would happen, going by how UM has been running this. Way to much reality getting in the way of any narravitium.

You've only specified the town in which you're meeting him, not the place within it. The town in question about a day away at human speed- no more than an hour or two for you- and has only a couple thousand people; locating an adventurer or adventuring party shouldn't be that difficult.

Eh, let's just go. I remember last thread you mentioned that we might try a "I've done bad things but please love me anyway" approach. I'm in favor of that.

    >>7874687
Hey, I'm just tossing ideas at the wall. Besides, the more realistic response would be for Trudan to ignore the message, not wanting to walk into a trap.

For it to work, we would need to send the message out as we leave for the meeting, telling Trudan that the party responsible are currently at location X, and that he needs to act fast if he wants to catch them. This way he doesn't have time to lay a trap and won't arrive to early, if he arrives at all.

The thought that you might want to test your new binding spell is driven from your mind in a flurry of worries over the meeting tomorrow. How will you find him? How will you avoid having him kill you? Perhaps you could arrange the terrain in your favor- have your earth spirits or sprites prepare a trap of some kind to let you get away, and lure him into it for the meeting. Or convince one of the people that you've antagonized, like the underworld boss Trudan, to send someone who might interfere.

Regardless, your move now is to investigate the place. Waving farewell to Sheryl, you begin to run for the town where your lost love awaits. Your sprites, air spirit, and earth spirits accompany you, and you find yourself slowing your pace somewhat to accommodate them. You might as well have some measure of backup.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 02/01/10(Mon)14:50 No.7875026
The fog of the night rolls back before you steadily, and the road is all but deserted. It doesn't take long to find the town- an unremarkable place, with small fields surrounding it and heavy woods beyond them. It seems peaceful, even sleepy, in spite of the bustling metropolis so nearby.

You walk confidently into its streets. They're mostly empty, although cheerful music comes from several buildings, likely taverns. One of those, or an inn, will be the most likely place to find your boyfriend. A quick gesture and a mental image to your air spirit, and it checks each of them in turn. It only takes a few minutes before it returns to you with news.

He's here already, sitting at a table in one of the inns with two other men and a woman. They arrived at least a day early. An impulse telling you to run to your boyfriend's arms strikes you, but you shove it aside; that would be far beyond foolish.

Just the same, you could act now, if you want to, moving the schedule up or sending a message to set a specific meeting location for tomorrow. That would give you the rest of the night to make preparations- summon more creatures, or perhaps prepare a specific spot for the meeting. Your resolution from last night to tell him that you're leaving him and he should leave you behind as well comes to mind- if you wish to stick to it, doing so without a fallback plan would probably be a very poor idea.

    What will you do?

Send the ranger sprite to find two or three spots a little removed from town, easy to defend and hard to surround, like a recess in a cliff, or a ravine, maybe a cave. The earth elemental will go with him, and search for abandonned buildings (we can enter uninhabited houses, right ?) in town. They should have no difficulties finding those. Then they should start creating tunnels going from each spot to one of the buildings. The entrances should be narrow enough so that we can enter swiftly with our vampire agility, but not a cleric or fighter in armor. A short way inside the tunnel should be prepared a section that can easily collapse behind us, should we ask a earth elemental. The sprite will hide the entrances in vegetation, and grow also the surrounding plants so that it won't be obvious to an experienced adventurer.
Bind two more air spirits, send them with the first to keep watch on each spot.
Ask vaesh and the other if they could use preparation to make better illusions, and is so, send them too so that they can be ready.

We'll contact the boyfriend tomorrow and give him one of the locations.

No, there's no such thing as evil.
There are only psychological motivations that may or may not be beneficial to other organisms.

UM just wants to make the loyal-to-bf option the *desired* option, punishing all others that don't comply.
There can be far more depth to a character than her romantic relationships and moral quandaries.

Well, screw them. We are playing a woman, so changing our mind on a whim isn't out of character. We should decide not to break up with him and that we still love him. Then, when we get to the meeting, we blame him for us turning into a vampire, because he never made time for me. Then if things go bad, we should tell him he has a small penis.

As you think, you move through the town to reach the inn where your boyfriend waits, moving almost automatically across rooftops with silent, light-footed steps. A dark and ominous hunter drawn to a monster slayer like a moth to flame; that's you. Seated on a rooftop from which you can stare at the light pouring from the inn's windows, you call your air spirit to you. "Bear my words to him."

You take a long breath. What to say? "Love, I will meet you tomorrow in this town as promised, shortly after dark. I would prefer it to be somewhere with only you present; this is between us, as it always has been. If you wish to name a place, do so now and I shall hear it." You stop speaking, wondering if you have said enough, if you should tell him how much you've thought of him and how much you've changed. It's a long minute of silence before you finally will your spirit to deliver your message.

    >>7875263
The minutes pass as you wait for a reply, your mind turning to thoughts of regrets. Why had things turned out this way? Why hadn't you been stronger, less callous, something that your lover might have been able to still love? Is having spirits and servants at your beck, all the wealth you can seize, all the knowledge you have time to study, and the black powers of the undead really worth giving up the dreams that you'd once treasured? When did you turn down the dark road, and when did you go so far that you can't turn back? The thought of trying to be good now is nothing more than a laughable mockery of those who truly attempt righteousness; you've gone too far in the name of... what were you even working for?

Your spirit is back, and from its breezy form swirls a long-dreamt-of voice that makes your unbeating heart ache in memory, even caught off guard while speaking of other topics. "-sword. I- what? Are you- honey, are you there?" A murmur of voices fills the spirit for a moment, interrupting one another so much that for a moment you can't hear anything; everyone at his table must be chiming in. "If you're here, just come in now! But... fine. Tomorrow, I'll meet you just outside town."

The spirit fills once again with the murmur of voices; the people with him are arguing against his going alone to face what they expect to be a dangerous monster. He doesn't seem to be particularly stubborn on the point; he may or may not show up alone. You tell the air spirit to return to the inn and listen in further, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible. It feels untrusting, but... this is a matter on which a little distrust is warranted, you think.

    >>7875473
With that done... you'll need someplace to run, if he does try to kill you. Getting to where the sprites are waiting outside of town is the work of moments, and you quickly instruct them to find likely places in the wilderness- cliffs, ravines, whatever- and work with the earth spirits to create collapsible tunnels leading to them, concealing the entrances with vegetation. The tunnels should lead to inconspicuous places in town, such as abandoned buildings, if possible, and to slightly outside of town if not. They bow and promise to see it done.

You consider summoning more servants in preparation for the morrow, or calling others here- the faelings, perhaps. If you want the slower-moving ones to arrive in time, they'll have to begin traveling before you next go to sleep. If you go back to the mansion to summon more servants, it'll probably be most of the night before you can come back here, if you have time at all.

    What should you do?

Honestly, if we're dead then we don't need gold or silver or anything, and we really have no one else to leave it to, so I say we leave it all to her. That and the greater summoning circle diagram; it should fetch enough gold from the mage guild or whatever they have here to let her live comfortably for the rest of her life.

    >Because of your stupidity, you didn't hide or cover your face when you woke the shopkeeper to order him to open the warded box, so now he knows what you look like.

    >You bash the shopkeeper over the head to knock him unconscious. Whoops, looks like you did it too hard and now he's dead.

These are the things that really pissed me off. Did we specify that we should hide somewhere before waking him up? No, but it's pretty fucking obvious that if we're going through all this trouble to avoid killing then we shouldn't do something that would mean that he'd have to die (like seeing our face. I mean come on, we didn't figure that hiding behind the counter of putting on a hood would be a good idea?), so we shouldn't have to specify it.

And then we decide to whack him over the head to knock him out instead of just having the imp do it with the knock out poison. I mean, not only is that stupid, but we've done it before and last time it didn't kill the guy.

These are major things that determine what we do next, and both are things that we, the character, are in control of. But rather than let us decide how to proceed, UM did it for us, and made the choices that put us into the most difficult position.

Yeah, actually the more I think about it the more this idea makes sense.
Just send vaesh to bring the boyfriend to us. When they're just out of town, she will tell him of our fears concerning this meeting, and ask him to renounce to physical violence against us, and in exchange she will lead him to us. That should conclude the pact ? If not, ask her to improvise, but to limit his part of the contract to not hurting us. We don't want a boytoy.

*nod* Also, some of these things are reasonable to expect us the players to think of, and others are not. We are after all not physically present at the location, we rely on the GM to tell us what is there and what we are capable of.

If he had given a full inventory of the store (maybe containing a burlap sack) we might have gotten the inspiration for concealment.

But it's been "here, go in blind, with no willpower, and no time before response."

Actually, the us knocking him out instead of ordering the imp to do it is more palatable to me. I mean, we've said many times that we're trying to minimize the number of people we have to kill. We've also come to a fairly good consensus that anyone who sees our face and sees what we can do has to die to keep it a secret. So I'd say that, even going by in-character and no input from /tg/, she would have thought to conceal herself, especially since we know that vampire telepathy can work from several meters away, thus giving us many place to hide while giving him the order.

What? I was meaning to get him drunk, steer him out side into an ally or something, face him away from us and then drink a bit. Where does robbing the tavern come into this?

And they might not take it seriously if we find a way to conceal the bite marks; magic perhaps? We could restrict ourselves to only 1-2 people a week, which should help keep from arousing suspicion, especially if we do it in other villages/towns as well so that it doesn't happen too much at any one place.

On the topic of railroading, auto-destructiveness, my making shit up, and so forth, I'll just say that no one is perfect, but I'm trying my best to be a good GM. I won't deny that I've made life more difficult than it had to be for the main character on more than one occasion through any of several methods at my disposal as the writer here, but I did so with the best of intentions and feel that it's been reasonably successful. We can argue the point in more detail once the thread is over, if you wish to. For now, I'd appreciate it if you'd focus on the game rather than the metagame.

You turn and run for the city, the ground flying by beneath your powerful strides. It takes more than an hour to get home, even so. Upon arrival you call the faelings to you.

"Tomorrow, I will be meeting with someone very important to me- and old lover of mine. I suspect that he might try to destroy me for what I've become, and he is one of the greatest warriors I know of; there's no way I can defeat him. If I send one of you to the meeting place ahead of me, can you get him to agree not to harm me if I do not harm him, and see that he keeps his word for our meeting?"

The faelings glance at one another, then Adept Vaesh nods. "We can attempt that if you wish, although if he does not agree we cannot force him to it. If he genuinely wishes to see you destroyed, I doubt he will unless he knows nothing at all of our kind."

You frown. You don't think that your ex-boyfriend knew much about magic, but you're not sure- adventurers pick up all kinds of information, don't they? For all you know, at some point he fought and killed a fae menace somewhere and is practically an expert. "Still, it's worth a try. Do you have any other ideas?"

Not if I trust the other one. And anyway, if he knows we're a vampire (his answer at the inn sounded as not), he's probably coming covered with garlic and stuff.

And I don't want to be the girlfriend of a guy who kill liches and doesn't afraid of anything, if he doesn't trust me. Or we'll be comdemned to stay in that pact until death, and that's not what I want, especially since I'll soon lose control over the faelings.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 02/01/10(Mon)16:31 No.7876503
They murmur to one another briefly for a moment, then turn back to you. "Lady, if you are willing to give permission, we might be able to arrange a deception with one of your prisoners. Between our illusions, the substances of your sprite to addle her mind, and your powers of command, you may be able to deceive this man into striking her down and thinking his task done unless his powers of perception are great."

You blink. That... is precisely the kind of callous, underhanded, and magic-reliant trick that the fae you've read about specialize in. You tell them you'll think on it and wave them away.

What if you die tomorrow? It's a real possibility, even if you're trying your best to avoid it. You pace back and forth. All your bound servants would disappear, and it's not as though you can count on Sarai or Bryden to do anything on your behalf. That leaves Sheryl. She's been a much better agent for you than you originally expected... is it unreasonable to see to her welfare, should things go poorly? There's no reason to bring her tomorrow- she'd be a liability in any conflict, and you doubt that her presence would sway any sentiments to your side, since apparently vampires can bend minds to their side. Someone disposed against you would simply assume that she's been warped into a cultist by your unholy powers.

That settles it, then. If you're destroyed, she gets everything. You carefully write out a note to her, explaining that should you not return everything yours is hers to dispose of as she sees fit, and identifying the various magical things in your possession- most relevantly the lesser summoning circle and the greater summoning circle diagram, each of which is worth a small fortune.

That complete, the night stretches before you. You've got perhaps six hours before dawn, enough to summon another couple creatures if you wish to do so. There is also time to make plans and issue them to any of your servants, before telling them to arrange to meet you outside that town tomorrow after dusk.

    What will you do?

    Different kind of love.

Also because this quest has kind of gotten less exciting lately and been winding down. Now that we've embraced the fact that we're a vampire and a monster, if we just go with that the rest will be so simple and easy that it provides no challenge or character development and will be boring. So we do this which stirs things up and provides a good climax for the story.

No. There is no going back, because you weren't there. You were NEVER there. You were there for so many other people, but you were never there for me.

When you were off questing and adventuring, I was left alone because you weren't there.

When I became angry, or sad, or frustrated, I didn't have you to comfort me because you weren't there.

When a crisis happened at home, I had to deal with it myself because you were never there.

When I was attacked by a vampire, I was taken and turned because you weren't there.

When I awoke in terror and fear and hunger, and realized what I had become, you weren't there.

When I was TORTURED for DAYS for her SICK amusement, I screamed your name to the skies for rescue and YOU WEREN'T THERE!

When I fought back, I did it alone because you weren't there.

When my entire existence became fear and pain and death and blood, YOU weren't there!

Even if you can 'fix' what I am now, what your neglect has done no power in the world can fix.

BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T THERE FOR ME. YOU WERE NEVER THERE FOR ME.

An impulse strikes you. You could just drop this whole idea, throw the idea of making a clean break with your boyfriend out, and leave the city. Take a ship, bring Sheryl and your servants, and go across the ocean to a different place. It wouldn't really solve your problem- adventurers are nothing if not tenacious; more tales than you can count have them spending years chasing a single villain- but it might at least buy you enough time to grow stronger, until maybe you'll be able to defeat your former lover. But it would also cast aside any chance you have of finishing this without his being certain of the need to destroy you; you've promised to meet him, and abandoning it would likely be perceived as betrayal even if you make an excuse. You're not quite ready to make that move. He still doesn't know where you live in Itonia- you should have time to flee if you escape the meeting tomorrow. And no human can run as fast as you, right?

    >>7876594 >>7876634 >>7876720
With the faelings' plan spinning through your mind, your steps lead you to the cave. The two humans you captured are sleeping in their crude cells under the watch of the warling, Blade. For a long moment, you gaze at them as their chests gently rise and fall in the darkness, hearing the tantalizing beating of their hearts. You should probably eat before tomorrow, you think. You'll need your strength.

But... maybe you should just set them loose. If you die, they'll just starve to death in the wilderness. You could have the faelings pact them never to speak of what happened, and know that they'd abide by it. Or-

-no, you'll put off this decision. You don't want to use the faelings' plan unless you have to, but practicality demands that you be ready. You lift up the slab of stone holding their cell closed and command the woman up, then pull her gently out, stilling her struggles as she wakes with quiet whispers of compulsion. Then you turn to the warling with words and some mental images. "Take this woman here, and see that she does not depart." As the woman doesn't seem inclined to move with the metallic creature, you whisper to her, "If you don't do as I say, I'll just kill you now. If you do and everything goes well, I won't ever kill you." She whimpers a bit and begins to move.

The man you leave shut up in the cave. Tomorrow, before you head to the meeting, you'll stop by and either drain him of his blood or set him free; you don't know which yet.

Your options are still open in that respect, at least.

Back to the mansion, the night leaking away. You move downstairs and speak with your mimir, listening to it chatter the minutes endlessly away and trying to keep it on the topic of creatures which might prove useful to you. Anything which might have the ability to make barriers or impediments which would buy you time to get away, mostly. Eventually, you conclude that your best bet is probably more spellrats- you've already got illusionists in the faelings, and working together several spellrats will become powerful enough to create a sizable mist, patch of slick ground, or even a solid barrier on your behalf. They could probably match most battlemages for skill, actually. You manage to call up four more of them as the night flits away.

Before retiring to bed, you tell all your summoned creatures to be hidden around the town by dusk tomorrow so that they will be there to aid you. There's no point in leaving any here, where they will vanish should you die and be able to carry out any final tasks in any case.

With that, you retire to your coffin, feeling tense and worried about the morrow.

    ***

The new night has fallen. The stars are cold and bright in the sky above you, and you have decisions to make. You grab what magic items you think might be helpful, just in case, and walk to the cave, where your prisoner awaits. You should either kill or free him before you leave, you think... and you're at least a little hungry.

    What will you do?

I'd say headklonk him, tie his arms and legs and leave the door ajar.

If we live, we might be able to get back to him before he wakes up and gets himself loose.

If we die, well he'll wake up and go free.

Have the imp KO him with the poison then drag him out and put him near the road. He has no bite mark, so no fear about a vamp scare. Have the EE cover the entrance to the cave completely so no one can tell that there's anything there.

Feed on an animal or something for the hunger. If we are going to die, no need to kill someone.

    Ok. Here's the strategy.

    We have:
    2 nature sprites
    1 earth elemental
    1 warrior-armor-thing
    1 useless talking skull
    2 fae
    1 assassin imp
    1 air elemental
    Many spellrats

Sprites and earth elemental morph the meeting area to tactically favor us, and create cover for our other minions. Assassin imp lies in conjured bushes, ready to gank bf with coma-poison. Warrior thing stands in front of us to take hits. Fae do illusion things to cover our retreat if need be. Spellrats make sure the boyfriend gets slippery feet and can't stand up. Also run countermagic in case he's got any. Air elemental pushes boyfriend away from us with wind resistance if we need to flee.

This setup gives us the best chance to gtfo and run.

It doesn't take you long to decide. You could eat him, maybe be a bit stronger before seeing your boyfriend, but screw it; the man- hell, the boy- has suffered enough. It's not like he really knows what you look like, beyond seeing you for a mere few seconds days ago; you've done everything in the darkness of the cave since then. He knows about your mind-control powers, but aside from that... it doesn't seem particularly likely that he'll be causing a vampire scare on his own. You haul the slab out of the way, then speak to him. "You can go. I don't really care."

With that, you turn and leave. It'll probably take him all night to find his way out of the cave, and you'll have the entrance moved afterward if you live.

You run through the darkness, wondering what you'll say and do. You snatch a few animals as you run, quickly sating your hunger without slowing you down too much, and leave a trail of small corpses behind you. The bindings on your summons tug you forward, and soon you are standing in the wilderness near town, with your five spellrats, assassin imp, two sprites, two faelings, three earth spirits, air spirit, apprentice shade, and warling standing flanking you. Adept Lirran is even holding your mimir. It's quite the force, you muse. He'll never be expecting this.

The man with whom you wish to meet waits on the road leading into town, with several lanterns lighting the area around him. We have not approached.]

You take a breath. This is it. "Thank you. Adept Vaesh, if you would?"

The faelings gives a small bow and moves out of the woods. You watch her as she moves to the road, creeping forward so that you can keep her in sight, and soon notice your former lover, pacing back and forth in his lanterns' light.

He is as handsome as you remember. Your vampiric vision makes you details of his figure that once you would have had to be beside him to see. His armor and weapons are lovingly maintained; he used to tell you the stories about each of them, which you'd put up with just because he was spending time with you. You stare at him as he spins and draws his sword when the faeling approaches, holding her hands out in a gesture of peace, although one of them holds her staff as ever.

Words are exchanged, and though you cannot make them out, your ex-boyfriend sounds agitated and angry. He looks wonderful even as he paces, but you realize in a moment of horror that his most attractive feature is the line of his neck, where you can just make our a pulsing artery. You close your eyes and look at the faeling instead. It feels terrible to look at your ex that way. Eventually, Adept Vaesh bows and runs off.

She returns to you. "He has agreed not to do harm to you unless you harm him, Lady... though he was not pleased about it. I should also note that I could not get him to speak for his allies, if any, though likewise I made no such promises on your part. That is the most common way to keep such a promise."

Well, that's done. This is probably as good a setup as you're going to get. All that's left is to choose your approach... what feelings and words to use to break off your romance or try to get him to still love you.

He is perhaps a hundred and fifty yards outside the town, on a stone-paved road with fields on either side, filled with the shoots of recently-planted crops. You doubt that anyone in the town can hear you, although they'll certainly be able to see into the lanternlight. It's hardly ideal; you gesture for Vaesh to lead him here. She nods and moves back to him, gesturing for him to follow. He grabs a lantern and begins to walk forward, but after a few dozen feet slows and looks behind him at the town, then stops and begins to talk angrily to your faeling.

Enough. You get up and move for the road. The possibility of other adventurers waiting nearby and planning a trap seems far too great to you, but you ignore that. You came here to talk, and you're not going to let paranoia stand in your way; you'll run to your prepared traps if things do wrong. As you walk towards him, you can easily tell when his eyes pick up your form, a pale shadow of his former lover approaching smoothly through the dark. He stiffens and tightens his grip on his sword; it's almost funny. He's nervous before you, when he's faced dragons and liches without flinching.

You stop walking forward and stand at the edge of the light. His eyes are locked on you, looking stunned, and he takes a step forward. "It's you. You're really here. Until yesterday, I thought for sure-"

You hold up a hand to stop him. You don't really want to hear about how he thought this was all a trick, when you've been living it. "I remember how I would often sit in our home, alone, with nothing to do but simple gardening and chores. My every day was filled with longing for you, and the few times you returned were more important to me than any holy day. You were all I wanted in this life, but I could have you only so rarely." You take a breath. He looks confused. He'd never understood you; you'd just been the person always there, waiting for him to come home, like he was the only person in the world that mattered and you were there to make his life more comfortable.

"So I left. I needed to gain your attention, to become more than the woman back home, the one always there but with no one there for her." You give a sad smile, but too late remember your fangs. He's looking at you with pain and horror; you're losing him.

You continue quickly. "But I didn't choose this path! That choice was made for me. The vampire lord ambushed me and turned me before I knew what had happened. I was brutalized and abused, and I had to learn to protect myself. To survive. What you see before you now, is a woman who has mastered herself."

He is silent for a long moment. When he speaks, his voice is somewhat choked up. "Is that really what you're saying? That now that you're a monster, you've mastered yourself? Do you think so little of the woman I loved?" You can see tears in his eyes.

You don't know what to say. You don't think little of yourself in the past, but you were like a glass sculpture, lovely to look upon but so very weak and fragile! You're more than that now! "No, I don't! Please, remember those days we had together. That's still me, beneath everything else that's happened. Please, don't focus on what circumstance and poor choices have wrought. I'm not..." You can't claim you're not a monster. Even you know that it would be a lie. Still, you press on. "Let's share each other again. We can be even more than we once were. I am no fragile girl any more. I could go with you everywhere, accompany you. We could be together!"

He looks at you. He's wavering, you can see it; he must love the memory of you just as you love the memory of him. "We could... I... I loved you, you know. One of the greatest things that kept me going was always the thought that you were waiting at home to hear about my next adventure, tell me what a wonderful job I'd done and how I was making the world a better place."
    >> Undead Monstrosity 02/01/10(Mon)18:55 No.7878753
You can't help but laugh. You'd have told him something equally loving if he was a baker; it was him that mattered, not his job. You move forward and throw your arms around him, effortlessly moving around his sword point. He doesn't move to stop you. "I missed you so much," you murmur in his ear. "Please, let me stay with you forever."

He's saying something in reply when you're hit by a wave of pain; you jump back in shock. From the town, riding on horseback, come four people, one of whom is holding forth a holy symbol which is glowing brightly with burning divine energy. Adventurers. They must have been watching, and taken your embrace as an attempt to drain him.

Your old lover looks at them, then at you. He doesn't seem to know what to do. Precious moments pass as he stares into your dead eyes before he speaks. "I... I can't... we can't! No! This would never work. Run away, and I'll tell them we don't have to follow you. We're only here because I wanted to be anyway. I'll always remember that I loved you."

You stare at him. That's more than you could ever have expected, more than you dared hope for... but he's still telling you to leave. And his companions are trying to kill you.

We're as evil as sin. The holy symbols burning us proves it. It's because good and evil in this world are a function of what, not whom. It doesn't matter what our motives are, it only matters that we are undead. That's enough for them.

They will not let us reason. They will charge in, knock us over from horseback and plunge a spear into our heart while we are on the ground. Then the cleric will dump holy water on us and smack us in the face with the holy symbol while we burn. Then they'll stake us and cut off our head.

    Fucking run.

The pain of the divine light grows stronger as the pounding hooves of your boyfriend's party approach. You stare at him and feel tears start to run down your face. You have wanted so very badly for him to say that he loves you, even through all the horrible things you've done. He might not know about them, but that doesn't matter; he said he loves you and you won't leave him to be alone with your memories again. "No. I'm sick of running away, and I love you. If I leave you now, I'll never see you again."

He gapes at you. "But they'll kill you if you stay here! There's always hope and another chance as long as you're alive."

You shake your head. "I'm not. I'm staying with you." The light grows stronger as the adventurers approach. You can see the one in front, holding his holy symbol aloft. The flesh of your face burns with pain, and you suspect that in a moment it will begin to blister. Flanking the cleric is a holy warrior, a gleaming blade in his hand; he's obviously planning to strike you with it as he rides by. The others are keeping back, but you already know that you don't recognize them- the one who you freed is not here to appeal to.

They're no more than twenty feet away when you boyfriend finally acts. He turns and runs in front of the priest's horse. "Stop! Don't hurt her!" The mount rears up rather than trample him, and the cleric gives him a glare. The robed man behind him shouts, "He must be dominated, kill her quickly!"

"No!" Your boyfriend's words are ignored, but you have to try and help. You step forward, hands out to show that you mean no harm. "Stop! I'm not going to fight, I love him!"

It doesn't help. Your outstretched hands make nothing more than a convenient target, and as you hold yourself still the paladin's blade slashes through a shoulder. Your left arm falls to the ground, burning with holy fire, and you shriek in agony. The pain of your tortures was nothing compared to this; it is the holy water all over again. You can hardly move; you writhe on the ground.

Shouts of alarm emerge from around you. Through pain-hazed eyes you watch the cleric fall from his mount, your assassin imp clinging to his neck and a small arrow poking from his face. The road beneath you suddenly feels slick, and the horses scream and tumble to the ground as they lose their footing at high speed. With a screeching of metal, you see your warling charge the adventurers, hopelessly outclassed.

The faelings stand beside you. "Lady, we must get out of here! We have only surprise and magics on our side. We can't conceal you from their powers forever."

You shake your head and gather yourself. "No. I'm not leaving him. They have to..." You can't even finish. You shove yourself to your feet. No one is going to take your love from you again, not when you're so close.

As you look around, you hear the female adventurer in the back shouting to the mage. "If you can't dispel the compulsion, we'll raise him later!" It takes a long moment for you to realize what's going on, but by the time you do it's all over. The mage is throwing flames about like a child's toys during a tantrum, and your sprites and rats shriek in agony.

All that's left is to flee as fast as you can with tears streaming down your face, leaving the corpses of half your servants and your love behind you.

It's a long time before you stop running.
