99 KB What the hell do I do now? Anonymous 02/17/10(Wed)14:07 No.8137458
    Running: Spirit of the Century

Status of players: Just handed in their character concepts.

    <----- The group.

    Theodore Roosevelt
    Amelia Earhart
    Eliot Ness
    John Shaft
    Howard Phillips Lovecraft
    Mata Hari

Setting: 1930s, leading into the rise of the Third Reich.

Roosevelt faked his death so he could keep adventuring without any post-presidency baggage.

Amelia Earhart returned from a Lost World type island after coming face to face with the legacy of Atlantis, and is now its sort of kind of champion.

Eliot Ness has just busted Capone and is aiming to crush out the crime plaguing America from abroad.

John Shaft is a man from the future who is seeking to set right what once went wrong.

HP Lovecraft is plagued by dreams and portents of disaster. He faked his death along with Robert E Howard so that they could get down to the bottom of their shared prophetic nighmares, but REH went missing.

Mata Hari has escaped from the serpent cult that resurrected her, and currently struggles to find some measure of redemption so that she won't have to return to hell.

Roosevelt's player just wants to do manly shit 24/7. Easy.

Amelia and Mata Hari are being played like pulpish butch and lipstick lesbian adventurers by a married couple, the wife and husband respectively.

Lovecraft's player wants to have his character become a fucking man.

John Shaft's player's goals are to 1) make Lovecraft not so terrified of black people, 2) make Lovecraft into a fucking man, and 3) bang a baroness.

Eliot Ness wants to crush out the crime.

I HAD some ideas of what to throw at these guys, mining pulp themes and stuff. Then they handed in their characters and I don't even know what

I've got early era Nazis and a serpent cult at least. What else should I throw at these guys?

Clearly you need to reference other real world ridiculousness, or mine the characters for more.

Lovecraft is having nightmares. So, throw lovecraftian horrors at them. Might be obvious, but perhaps there's a tweest!

Why does Atlantis need a champion? Why would they pick Earhart?

Eliot Ness wants to fuck up crime. So give the mob connections to the snake cult/lovecraftian horrors/nazis.

What's the wrong that Shaft wants to right? It can probably be connected to everyone else in someway.

Mata Hari. Serpent Cult. Cultists. Lovecraft. Cultists.

Roosevelt wants to ruin shit. He probably still loves America. Nazis/crime/monsters/cults = bad for America.

sounds like you should combine ideas along these lines. Nazis operating out of Atlantis working with cultists, toss in Dagon, slap nazis with some sort of "monster" template like snake people or what have you. Bam, there's your campaign.

Cthulhu-esque horrors from beyond the bounds of understanding. Good tie to the serpent cult - something akin to Deep Ones, maybe? Hell, Deep Ones themselves make a good tie to Atlantis and Earhart.

Hell, tie everything in to something deeper or more supernatural and have them all be in a covert war to control humanity. Have the Mafia be run by demons of the seven deadly sins or vampires or some shit. Have the Nazis be their Indiana Jones portrayals, hunting out mystic artifacts to empower themselves.

The players are independent powers stuck in a giant covert war for control over humanity between a handful of powerful conspiracies. Their task is to try and make sure nobody wins.

Kind of dovetails into why they would bring Mata Hari back. She was a valuable operative for the German Empire once.

Maybe they need info locked away in her memories?

Maybe Shaft's present era is overrun with reptilian drug runners selling dope to the community?

I like this! I prefer having the villains not be one big group, but a bunch of secretive, sometimes warring factions.

Running towards this direction I think!

Amelia's player kind of wanted her role as Atlantis' champion to be like The Phantom. In a plane.

Let her develop the whole heroine persona, bask in the glory for a bit, and then slowly reveal that there's some dark purpose behind their meddling. Here's what I see going for you right now, enemy-wise:
1.) Snake cultists. They worship the "great serpent," and since you can place a reptile in just about every damn faith on the planet these guys can be anywhere. Let's say, just for bullshitting plot purposes, the "great serpent" is somewhere between the Babylonian Tiamat and Aztec Quetzalcoatl - it is a primordial force which is supposed to return and bring about cataclysmic change in the world, and they want to hurry this along.
2.) Deep Ones. Both Lovecraftian and Atlantean in flavor - you almost HAVE to include some of the fish-men at some point.
3.) Nazis. They're the "black magic" Nazis of Indiana Jones. Look up the "Nazi Occultism" stuff on Wikipedia and roll from there - they're willing to steal and use anything, from any background or power source, to achieve their agenda.
4.) La Cosa Nostra. I don't really know what to do with the Mafia, but they are from Italy if you want to steal from the Roman Catholic apocrypha for mystical flavor.

For the serpent cult, you could also angle for a Hyborean Era Set that REH dreamt of as he wrote.

Mata Hari is a distant descendant of the Stygians. Possibly a reincarnation of one of their ancient, decadent queens.

Stygia spun of from Acheron, right? Acheron and Atlantis were enemies.

If it's a serpent cult, worldwide in many cultures, worshiping an ancient "serpent", then that could easily be a Lovecraftian horror.

And Lovecraft wasn't writing fiction so much as he was writing these god damn nightmares that wouldn't leave him alone.

A subgroup of nazi mystics searches an artifact of old, called perhaps the Staff of Poseidon, that would give them the ultimate power over the sea and thereby enable them to blackmail the more or less innocent folk of Atlantis, Amelia comes into play here. The aritfact is not some ordinary magical bogus, but in fact one of the last remains of the great old one Cthulhu, which he brought from his home dimension. He himself being asleep dreams of the staff and poor Howard shares these horrid dreams. Shaft returns from a future, where the nazis have seized possession of the Staff and thereby control over most but not all parts of the civilised world. He travels back in time for preventing them from doing so, not however knowing too much about the whole story, because the nazis have not disclosed how they came into control. Mata Hari gets her chance for redemption by saving the future from the brown trash. Howard becomes a man by killing nazis and by seeing the outcomes of racism he averts from hating niggers. Ness is brought in by Roosevelt as the ablest man in fighting crime for investigation of the nazis secret societies. And Roosevelt does manly shit all the time anyways. The journey starts at the Bermuda triangel, where Amelia observed while boldly crossing the Atlantic some strange phenomena, which Roosevelt could attribute to secret experiments of said nazi subgroup.

The Three bring along Mata Hari and are there joined by Lovecraft, who at some point couldn't prevent himself from travelling the sea to seek the source of his dreams. Nash joins them, because an oracle from his time had visions of the place. The strange Nazi experiments with old magic from the Necronomicon emanated through space and time and so she knew the place to start the journey. why are the nazis experimenting? By Alhazreds dark magic the seek to define the exact place where the unholy staff rests. The characters arive just in time to witness said experiments and get an idea on where the staff is (perhaps Siberia is an interesting location). The nazis however seize it first and the group has to prevent them from bringing it to Berlin, where Rasputin, by now chief magician of the coming third reich, is preparing a ritual to fully enable the staffs powers. A wild hunt ensues where possesion of the artifact changes between groups, the one trying to hide or destroy it, the other to bring it to Berlin.

What do you think? I would run it.

    Here's an idea:

Lovecraftian horrors are all bark and no bite, because Lovecraft himself is pretty much a spineless coward. Eldritch abominations are closer in power to how they are in Howard's stories. Tough maybe, but they can be beaten.

Have the Lovecraftian horrors be intimidating at first, but as HP grows some balls under Shaft's guidance, they become less and less of a threat, because HP isn't afraid of them any more.

Spirit of the Century is a pulp action-adventure game. It's probably the best-designed game published to date. It's a ton of fun--group character creation alone is more fun than playing some other games.

    >Also, before I even start looking for book torrents, how is the crunch of the system?
Fantastic. Light, but not too light, and perfect for pulp stuff.

    >Should I just steal the mood of pulp fiction and adapt GURPS or d20 modern to it, or is it worth it to actually find any books?
Oh, god, the thought of running SotC with GURPS or d20 Modern fills me with rage. Don't you dare. The book is on /rs/, IIRC, and the free (and complete) SRD is at http://zork.net/~nick/loyhargil/fate3/fate3.html

It's a very loose, freeform system. If you can give a lot of power to the players over what's going on in the story beyond just what their characters are capable of, you can have a good time with this.

It's a very different kind of game from d20 and GURPs.

Have one of Lovecrafts poems. That one's pretty far down the scale by his standards. He got far more out of whack quite frequently.

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Iove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
    The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
    Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a nigger.
