You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a defender of the weak. You are a master of combat.

Month 14, Day 14. The end of the year approaches. Everyone's very excited, especially the kids. With your assistance, the village of Dreamwood has grown into a prosperous, built-up town, with a system of education, a repository of knowledge, a massively increased farming capacity, and an underground bunker big enough to save everyone you know.

Next week, you'll be getting a visit from a skilled smith who specializes in weapons. In the months ahead, you will gain a full suit of Magma Steel armor, to supplement your fireproof suit. You're on your way to becoming unstoppable.

You just hope that this will give you the power you need to face your enemies without fear. And without losing your arms.

Food and drink figure prominently. The celebration itself is based around an old myth about the world beginning anew with the first sunrise on the first day of the new year, and a tradition has arisen whereby the residents of this area do their best to stuff everything they can into a last-minute party before it all starts over.

There will be no work on the 28th or the 1st of next year. The years-end celebration will take up almost all of the day, and the following day will be one of rest. You have some sway as to what exactly is done during the party, since you are an ally of the village and can shape tradition by your actions.

Hretmar has experience with similar celebrations among his own kind, which often degenerated into drunken brawls and immense property damage. The Frost Giants really get into it, as their lives are often filled with hardships and points of happiness are few and far between. This is part of the reason for their belligerence.

You have the gift of magic and incredible size. Giving the children rides again would be a good idea, and putting your talents to use in some way would be perfect. Perhaps you could build a statue or puppet some snowmen into a reenactment of one of your stories.

You explain to Vasian a little about the nature of your planet's Moon, an airless rock upon which nothing lives. On the many occasions you have looked up to this world's Moon, you have found it subtly different, though it is still a cratered, blasted white sphere. You go through a short retelling of the Space Race, which led to a ship built by your nation landing on the Moon, and pictures of the planet being taken from it.

Vasian is impressed. A long, metal tube, rising through the atmosphere on a pillar of fire, carrying men of the world into the ether, on a quest of discovery and a triumph over their enemies. It's the stuff of this planet's fantasy, an unfathomable task without the aid of magic. There are spells, he says, that can show you the world as it hangs in the blackness, and the visions of those who use them have been recorded, but in words, not in pictures. The best view you're likely to have of the entire world comes from the astronomical models in the universities.

It has been seven days. The seventh field is undergoing rapid expansion as wood is gathered from the forest. You intend to get as much done as possible before your armor is ready, since you will almost surely begin adventuring again at that point, leaving the town to fend for itself. The forge has been expanded yet again, and roads are being laid between the fields and the town. Eventually, the main part will start to reach over the river, as further water-powered buildings take shape along it.

The elders, taught by both Vasian and yourself, and drawing upon the library's extensive holdings and your own writings, have been crafting their own plans for expansion, along the technological path you think best. The addition of a master smith will make metalworking much easier, leading to the production of pipes, boilers, gears, turbines, and all the things that steam power will require down the road.

With your meager scrying skills, you spotted Bem and Dreman approaching from a fair ways off, looking through the icicles hanging from the trees standing by the road. You hid in the false granary while they approached, and just before you cut the link you saw the smith's eyes widen in surprise as he got his first glimpse of this out-of-the-way hovel. Impressed, you hope.

A new cow and wagon accompanied the two, filled to the brim with as many tools and anvils as it could carry, along with a dozen books or so. Dreman was taken on the standard tour, meeting the original smiths and seeing their work with Averron plate and bog iron. After that, the elders brought him to the new granary to see the fields, while you approached as silently as possible. Before you even got close, he turned, and looked right at you.

“Explain your presence here, Northman,” he said coolly, placing a hand on his belt.

The armor is extremely durable and cannot be melted or shaped easily; it is forged far beneath the earth, where rock runs like water.

Magma Steel is extremely durable, very difficult to deform, and heat-resistant to a ridiculous degree. It is quite heavy, making it impractical for humans and many other beings to wear exclusively, but it is capable of withstanding a large amount of punishment. Crossbow bolts glance off it like pebbles, blades of all kinds draw across without scratching it.

Like most armor, it transmits vibration, and because of its durability, its structure cannot absorb energy by warping. Thus, sufficiently powerful explosive effects or weapon strikes can kill the occupant without actually damaging the armor.

In the future, maybe we should be a little more subtle when introducing ourselves to new immigrants. Instead of sneaking up behind them and yelling boo, we could have them turn a corner and find us helping some villagers raise a barn. Or we could be working out in a field with no clear frame of reference, so we just appear as a strange blue person until another villager walks up next to us.

The tour guide could be casual about introducing us; "There's Bob, and Mal, and Maya, and Steve, and that's our distillery, wait until you try our cider! What, a Frost Giant? Where? Sometimes gems and precious metal trimmings are only for show, and sometimes they hold actual magical power. An enchanted stone can give a weapon unrivaled strength, sharpness, or luck in striking. It can also gift the implement with an aura of fire, or a blinding light that burns only evil. It can be impossible to tell whether a gem is just a gem or a secret reserve of immense power, which makes a man with a jewel-encrusted sword all the more dangerous.

Question: How long does Hretmar's shrinking spell last for? If it lasts indefinitely, or he can recast it often enough it might as well be lasting indefinitely, then I have an idea.

Why don't we get him to shrink us, and then go down to the capital while human-sized? We won't look fully human thanks to our blue skin and hair, but odds are, their reaction wouldn't be "AHH DON'T EAT ME" but rather "That's funny. What happened to your skin?" to which we reply that we were afflicted by a curse. Even then, though, we could probably minimize that factor by dressing in our demonskin armor, and posing as an adventurer.

Then, once we get to the capital, we buy our noble title using the gems we got from the demons. Once the noble title is granted, we reveal that the curse did more than just change the color of our skin and hair, and ask the Lord to suspend the bounties on us.

Last month, day 28. Welcome to party town. This breakfast may be the best meal you've ever had. Meat of all kinds stretching to the end of the table, pancakes with Dreamwood's own delicious syrup, biscuits, gravy, and actual bacon. Everything is perfect, down to the smallest bit. Not to mention that you're inside the new Hall, instead of sitting on the ground. Dreman seems to be satisfied with the answers he got from the people of the town, given that he hasn't disappeared quietly or tried to murder you in your sleep. It'd be hard to pick him out of the rest, seeing how easily he fits in here.

After breakfast comes the real fun. An archery contest proves Kel to have the best aim, though the farmers have become more skilled with their bows, enough to make them a real threat at shorter ranges. You and the kids construct two ice castles at opposite ends of a field and enact a siege with snow-golems and a samurai of purest water. The samurai leads the children into battle, slicing apart the powdery beasts with his sword while the little ones smack them with sticks. You don't move much when you're pulling the strings, but once most of your 'minions' have been defeated, you throw up your hands in despair and the castles explode into snowflakes. This may be your favorite way to use all that power you've got.
Jaek and Jerith duke it out with their chosen weapons, the first with a two-handed sword and the second with telekinesis. They float around in slow motion as the mage lifts their bodies, letting them walk on walls and leap through the air like they live in the Matrix. All eyes are on them as Jaek levels his sword, asking his friend if he has any last words.

And then a small child escapes its mother's grasp and kicks him in the balls. Jerith seizes his opportunity, ripping the sword from the poor man's hands and shoving him down, shouting at him to yield. He does, with much lamentation. And so the mage secures the victory, praising his brave apprentice for bringing down the evil swordsman in his moment of triumph.

After a short break, the Hunters take over, re-enacting the early days of Perin, with each taking the role of one of the successor Lords, driving back the trolls, the giants, and the evil men of the East, conquering all and leading their people to victory after victory. They show the first meeting of Human with Hagrek, and the ancient agreement that paved the way for the 'factory race' and their attaining a place in all cities. They show the discovery of the Ulls, in the form of mercenaries who assisted the Sixth Lord in beating back the progenitors of Forus, and accepted an offer to settle in Perin as long as they were left to themselves.

Vasian goes next, playing the part of the Baron of Tipory, exploring the ether on a ship of stone, powered by a chained god and his secret, arcane arts. With Lark's illusions providing a backdrop, the Baron lands on the Moon, finding it a desolate, but livable place, and meeting the giant King and Queen of the Moon, staying for many days and nights in there labyrinthine palace. While in the care of those two ridiculous characters, he falls in love with the Queen, and is later chased from the palace by the irate King, riding a metal horse which fires bolts of iron from its mouth. The story ends with the Baron's ship lassoed by the King, and his final fate left up to the audience's imagination.

Everyone awaits the end of the last glimmer of light, and when the sun sinks beneath the horizon, leaving nothing but the dull red as it moves, the people look away, finding a comfortable place in which to wait for the inevitable return of the brightness of life. The red fades, leaving only the black of the ether and the tiny points of the stars. The year ends in silence.

The quiet shatters at your voice as you begin. “Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away.” The tale unfolds with all the grace you remember. An evil Empire, born of hate and fear, oppression and destruction its favored tools. A tiny Rebellion, fighting a near-hopeless battle for freedom and justice.

The creaking, damaged ship of Rebels cascades through the ether, bolts of red and green flying back and forth between it and the oncoming dreadnought, a city-sized ship dubbed the Destroyer of Stars. An Imperial Mage clothed all in black watches his prey, leveling his gloved fist to signal the boarding party. His breath cycles through arcane machinery, keeping his armored body alive for one more second with every tortured movement of his artificial lungs. He is a man full of hate and pain, and he is not to be trifled with.

White-clad Imperial Storm-Troopers burst through the sealed doors of the escaping craft, killing all who resist them. Two metallic golems, one gifted with the power of infinite translation and the other with vast intelligence, flee from the soldiers' path, and after the short one has received the Princess's message, eject from the ship in a miniscule lifeboat.

They land in the desert, embarking on separate journeys. The smaller one insists on completing his mission, while the other walks off in a huff. In the end, both are captured by brown-robed, glowing-eyed traders, who travel in a ship that moves on treaded wheels, propelled by a great furnace. The golems are sold to a farm boy and his guardians, and the story picks up.

The ancient master Obi-Wan teaches young Luke to feel the Force, the primal, silent energy that permeates all. He gives him his father's light-saber, a small device that emits a blade that can cut through anything on command. Driven from his home by Storm-Troopers searching for the golems, losing his aunt and uncle to their bolt-guns, Luke runs with Obi-Wan to the wretched hive of scum and villany, the ether-port Mos Eisley. There they find themselves a transport, in the form of the Millenium Falcon, and its pilots, the arrogant, self-serving Han Solo, and his immensely strong companion, the Wookie Chewbacca.

To the ruins of Alderran, where they are trapped and captured by the Death Star, a ship orders of magnitude larger than the Star Destroyer, a War-Moon with the power to erase an entire planet with a single shot. They hide inside the Falcon's secret compartments, steal the armor of two Storm-Troopers, and find the Princess, managing to get themselves trapped again and forced into a machine that crushes heavy waste.

Everything comes crashing down. Obi-Wan, after removing a crucial component from the artifact which binds the Falcon inside the Death Star, is slain in a duel with the dark lord Vader right in front of Luke, who fires blindly at the armored man, unwittingly hitting several troopers and setting them ablaze with his stolen bolt-gun.

Han, as usual, is concerned only with himself and his pay, eventually securing the remainder of the royal Leia's fortune to cover his costs. The information carried by the small golem spurns an attack, thought futile by some, against the Death Star with small, x-winged ethercraft, one of them piloted by Luke.

In the ensuing battle, almost all of the tiny ships fall to the bolts of the War-Moon, and more are cut down by the dark lord himself, flying a superior craft. Luke hears the voice of his friend and teacher, learning to trust in the Force. He shuts off the enchanted device that aims his weapons, and closes his eyes... He lets go. Han returns in his Falcon, cutting down Vader's minions with a burst of bolt-fire, sending the dark lord careening off into the ether, as Luke fires, straight down the middle.

Two flaming, shining arrows penetrate the tunnel that leads to the furnace at the heart of the War-Moon, causing a reaction that destroys the entire vessel even as its commander gives the order to fire. Luke and Han find their way back safely, and receive the thanks of the Princess, as well as medals to commemorate their service. A New Hope fades to black as the villagers applaud. Perfect.

Dawn comes. The sun, ever brilliant, appears in the East, sending waves of shimmering orange across the clouds. You lead the villagers outside, gathering your power. Strings of blue and green weave from the fingers of your mind, reaching into the heavens. You call upon Hretmar's strength and ask for his blessing, launching arrows of ice into the darkened sky.

Bright, vibrant colors sweep through the air as the arrows detonate, sending bursting shards in every direction. You can feel your patron god pour his will into the wind, lighting up the town with spheres of red and yellow, runic symbols adorning their surfaces. They morph at your command amidst the exploding fireworks, shifting into patterns of whirling circles, gaining sharp angles and molding themselves into the shapes you see.

The dark lord, glorious in red and orange, moves across the stars, swinging his bright-red sword, doing battle with the blue and green of Obi-Wan, the master of the Force. Tiny red-white ships fly about in the distance, fighting others and detonating in flashes of light. The one that is left fires its torpedoes as Vader brings his sword across, ending the old Master and the gigantic vessel in one massive blast of thunder.

Twinkling snowflakes filter down, reflecting the rays of the rising sun. Your spectacular performance leaves you exhausted but full of excitement at what you've shown your people. They all congratulate you on a job well done, and you thank Hretmar for his assistance. Not a bad way to start the day, is it?

One year down. Two centuries and some change to go. Could be worse.

The sun returns to its resting place beneath a cloudless sky as you retire to your underground home, content. Dreamwood winds down, slowly. Your adopted villagers step lightly on the snow-covered ground, walking home. To the houses you designed, to sleep securely just above you, always under your protection.

This is your home now. Even if you could find a way to go back, to the place where you were nothing special, just a face among billions, why would you want to leave? Everything you want is here. All the people who need you are here. What would become of them if you left, to go back to your old self, your old life? Hopefully, it's something you will never have to find out.

For now, you'll sleep, thinking of your future. A future worth striving for.

I know there is a large population of females in the town given the war and draft, but we haven't interacted with them on any real level during the quest, other than to get our clothes

Not that this is a bad thing, mind you. It has just how things have been happening. There is no need to add a token character that is female just because we don't have one.

Now, if there is a reason or story behind it, then by all means, let there be estrogen

Most all the NPCs do fit into male gender roles so far though. Hunters, smiths, elders in a feudal village. The only one I can think which could have potentially been female is maybe Jerith as something more witchy.

Naw, I suck at photo shop too much for that. I just use layers for everything. But basically, I do the line art on the top layer, do a shadow layer under that, and color under that, ect. I end up with 10-20 layers depending on the piece. Horribly inefficient, but it makes it easy to change just one part of it without mucking up the rest. But the eraser tool is my best friend when it comes to making these things. I basically carve out the shape form a rough line.
