You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a defender of the weak. You are a master of combat.

It is the first month of a new year. Plowing will soon begin, and with your earth-magic skills, you'll be able to finish with time to spare before all of your armor arrives. Since Bem only ordered a full suit, with no weapon, if you want a Magma Steel longsword, warhammer, battleaxe, or all of the above, it will fall to Dreman to fashion them.

There is news from Fain. Another incursion happened two weeks ago, between Streamlow and Olton. Several small fissures appeared near the stream, sending forth Demons and Rock Spiders from the depths of the earth. Fortunately, they were sealed before much damage was done, and casualties were light.

Earth mages are now in high demand, for only they have the power to close the pits before they begin to consume.

Your hands find the familiar holds in the smooth, cool wall, slipping into them easily as you scale the chasm. It's warmer here than you remember, but still quite cold, not nearly enough to worry yourself over. You drop down slowly, hitting the floor quietly, remembering the long months spent in the company of that whispering, rasping voice.

The walls are untouched, exactly as you left them. The small indentations marking the points where you sealed the tunnels remain, undisturbed. Everything is in its place, thankfully, though the air is definitely warmer than it used to be. The floor and walls are cool to the touch, and none of the tunnel plugs feel any different.

It's as quiet as a tomb. Not even the soft rustle of the birds above reaches you here. And to think this was your home for so long.

Approximately how long will it take for Dreman to make us a proper weapon from the Magma Steel (including getting the right equipment and assistants)? Also, which weapon type would be most effective against the creatures we intend to fight - eg. fire demons, frost giants, elementals (in the sense of stabbing/bludgeoning/chopping)?

I'm glad you're here again. I love your quests and they're the only ones I choose to participate in.

I recall that general training is going on in the background. Does that include fire/evacuation drills? We should be aware of how everyone will react whatever we may be attacked by.

He has all the equipment and help he needs right now. The time it would take depends on your choice of weapon; a mace and chain would be more difficult to make than a few daggers.

Demons of the Deep can be easily slain or incapacitated by damaging the eyes or the underside, a 'pointy' weapon works best for this. Frost Giants are rather thick-skinned, but otherwise as weapon-resistant as large humans. As for elementals, they are often extremely difficult to kill with physical damage; in the case of Magma Elementals, your best chance would be an earth magic-based attack.

Thank you for the compliment. I very much enjoy running this Quest.

Magma Steel weapons are vastly superior to standard steel implements. A crossbow bolt with an MS head could penetrate most armors even from long range. A dagger could punch right through full plate, and a longsword could slice clean through entire soldiers. Magma Steel offers a great advantage in combat, which would go a fair ways toward making up for the majority of the peasants' lack of real military training.

In full Magma Steel plate you will be about 70% heavier. This will tax your endurance over long distances, limit your speed, and cause you to sink quickly in soft materials. The addition of the battleaxe, shortsword, halberd, crossbow, and knife would bring you up to a solid two tons even. You would need to train for awhile before becoming combat-effective with that level of encumberance.

It can be done, but if you're looking to jump right into adventuring, I would suggest you subtract some of the armor and carry the halberd, crossbow, and knife only, until you've gotten stronger.

As I recall, we were very weak when we started sealing up the tunnels, and some of the plugs are very thin. We should practice our earth magic by reinforcing those plugs.

Also, we should make sure that the escape tunnels we built under the town don't suddenly turn into some kind of demonic commuter system. Reinforce the walls, ceiling, and FLOORS. Build doors/hatches/gates that can only be opened by human hands at the entrances to the tunnels, as well as at critical junctions throughout the system. Dig bypass tunnels throughout the system that will allow humans to circumvent any blockage, but will be too low and narrow to admit demons and other large subterranean predators. Make sure these bypass tunnels are hidden behind sturdy locked doors so we don't have to worry about THEY'RE IN THE WALLLSSSS!!!

Our human buddies are kind of squishy compared to us, and considering how much damage we take in most fights, it might be better if they wore lighter armor and focused on providing fire support from a safe distance.

Recommend we equip the Red Shirts with leather armor, crossbows, pole arms, entrenching tools, small axes and these things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavise

If we get in a fight, they jam the shields in the ground, lean the spears against them, and start plinking away with crossbows while we distract the monsters. If anything small gets by us, they can hold it at bay with the polearms, if anything big goes for them, heavy armor will just keep them from running away.

If we have time to set up a proper ambush, they can dig trenches and pits or cut trees to use as barricades.

Magma Steel halberd will be a great weapon, but a handful of frost-giant sized throwing spears, even with normal steel tips, might be very important in the short term. Being heavier then a crossbow bolt they should pack more energy into a hit, and are not as sensitive as, say, Ice, when being shoved into somethin' infernal and fire loving.

You press the earth-stone to the floor, letting the patterns in your mind give way to blackness, to a window. The earth yields to your sight. You can see the entrances to the tunnels, their paths blocked by thin but solid rock. They stretch from the center of this room, plunging off into the ground, weaving a twisted way that seems to change from moment to moment. The tunnels curve together, intersecting and falling away, further and further down.

You see heat. The tunnels end in bright, whispy spirals, their molten walls dripping into a lake of bubbling fire. Far, far beneath you, under many layers of rock, you see a place much like the surface, flowing with rivers and streams of slowly-flowing rock, lit by an everpresent, rippling glow. There are creatures there, some far beyond your perception, living, warring, traveling beneath the earth. Some of them are climbing. Their long, spindly arms grasp the filaments of a force you cannot see, riding them slowly upward. You see their eyes, their nine reddened eyes, looking to the surface.

A burning pain grips your heart. The heat reaches you, crawling up your legs like a thousand tiny spiders, invading your flesh. You open your eyes wide, falling backwards, the spell broken. You feel drained as the cold returns to you. It's warmer now.

You have no contact with the former citizens of Ellever, so you or someone else would have to visit Strade or Evermain to ask about any strange arrivals.

Hretmar knows of creatures of fire being summoned or called to the surface to fight the Frost Giants and the Ice Elementals, but that was a century ago. It is difficult to pinpoint the magic used to call such things, as it is subtle and far-reaching, nigh-indistinguishable from the natural way of things.

According to Vasian, there are human mages capable of summoning beasts of fire. The 'world of lava', such as it is, appears to be a system of caverns and tunnels that extends through the mantle. According to the books you've read, similar systems exist elsewhere in the world, so the network could very well extend across the entire planet, beneath the surface. The place you saw was about fifteen stories from floor to ceiling, so there is plenty of room for more underneath it.

Charms can boost your attributes, but to apply a permanent effect would require either an immense amount of energy or a constant drain. Charmed items exist, but the only ones Bem has seen in Fain are weak and overpriced. Enchanting an item to reduce its weight is common, and not particularly difficult to do, but each reduction in weight carries with it a slight reduction in effective mass. If you make your sword weigh less, it won't hit as hard. This effect is generally negligible.

Bags of holding do not appear to exist as such, but there are items which can store things in an 'empty' plane and call them back. There are also spells which can accomplish this, but the knowledge of how to cast them is government-regulated.

Sounds like we can let the town operate unsupervised for defense tasks. As for education, probably there aren't any truly knowledge-intensive tasks that require better than grade 2 reading at this time. Maybe we should get the village to start the children in on Reach For The Top style trivia tournaments as a way to attach an emotional reward to learning and intelligence?

The ice-that-ices-things may be a dead end unless we can identify a potential use case. I'd advocate taking its practice time and giving it to Doom Comets.

For Trivia of Perin, all I really worry about is things like learning which areas are high traffic so as to avoid them when needed. Learning their cultural phobias and fables/morals so we can manage our conversations/interactions with strangers better in a way that will feel more familiar to them. And etiquette when addressing police, military, nobility, government officials, etc. basically, if there was a Travellers' Guide, be all over those aspects.

MS shafts would probably be too much for humans to lug around, so maybe just MS tips if we can spare the metal? And put a notch in the top of the pavise so they can lean the pike across it with the butt jammed in the ground while firing their crossbows. Anything charging blindly at them will have a good chance to impale itself, and they can drop the crossbow and grab the pike quickly if things get hairy.

Will reducing the mass of our armor weaken it structurally, or make it less heat resistant? How about our crossbow, would that work as long as we don't mess with the ammo? Fast stabby weapons would benefit from lower mass, as long as it didn't make them easier to break.

It has been one month and five days. The snow has largely disappeared, and plowing has begun. Dreman has come around, satisfied with the way you've been handling things, though you don't know if he trusts you implicitly. Your halberd and crossbow have been constructed to spec, and you've got a nice pile of practice bolts in addition to the two dozen MS-heads you've accumulated. The first half of your armor suit has arrived, and you've been training with it, trying to build up your strength so you don't lose so much mobility when you wear the full thing.

The bunker has been taking up a large amount of your time, as you expand the structure into a fortress, warping the walls and floors into thick, dense armor, placing gates and heavy doors at the entrances to the tunnels, and carving bypasses into the surrounding rock. In less than a month, that project will be complete, and the bunker will be nearly impenetrable, and much safer for its inhabitants.

You spent the last few days in an endurance run to the ruin site halfway to Ellever, leaving some time to explore it. The place is overgrown with vegetation, in extreme disrepair. It is surrounded by stone pillars, with faded runes carved in them, several of them leaning over, and others toppled. The center was once paved with stone, but now hosts an enormous crater, the rough rock underneath jamming up through the surface. As you peer over the edge, you can feel a soft heat flowing upward, though all you can see is blackness.

Okay, so I think I'm caught up. If we're only going to have 3-4 people with us when we take on adventuring then pikes probably isn't the best idea; such weapons work best when used in large formations to make a wall, against cavalry. DoD are intelligent and won't mindlessly run into them. I think a better weapon would be crossbows for them all with MS tipped bolts. Especially since we know that DoD can kill hundreds of infantry if they try to take it in melee. Range is the way to go for anyone who isn't a strong frost giant of something similarly powerful, and even then I'd advise that we stick with our crossbow once it's done.

A wave of fire pours into the blackness, jetting upward and filling your vision with bright orange, singeing your skin with the heat of the underworld. You jump back as the wave shoots up out of the crater, stopping at the edge of the treetops. Ice forms on your body, protecting you from the searing wave as you hit the ground, covering your eyes with your hands.

The rippling, shimmering surface congeals, solidifying in front of you. The top bends down slowly, until it stops mere inches from your face. It's taking all you have to keep the ice from simply evaporating.

Repeating crossbows, preferably. We can't rely on everyone who comes with us to be a sharpshooter, so bolt spam is the way to go.

We could give them magma steel shields and shortswords for use against non-demon opponents, and repeating crossbows for use at range and against demons. As long as we don't throw on armor, they should stay relatively mobile.

Still, having a bunch of people following us around does drastically reduce our mobility; someone six feet tall just can't keep up with someone our size. If it comes down to speed, we'll have to leave any posse we bring behind.

I demand a proper grieving story post with descriptions of how we planted the seeds of change in the world and momuments were built to us and the stories of our death are vastly exaggerated and involve us rocking out on the second Battle Barge being rammed into Nurgle and how there are Maya Sightings and rumours we're really still alive.

This light... is different. It laughs in reddish, flickering tones, gazing at you with contempt and fury. It finds you, floating in the dark, lighting you with its strange white flame.

“Hello,” it says, in that cruel, mocking tone, “I don't believe we've met.”

It dances in the void, circling you, looking you over with its single, slotted eye, bouncing from side to side as it chuckles quietly.

“Do you think,” it continues, “You would like to die here?”

Your mouth moves, but no words come out. You feel your neck, pressing your fingers against something hard, something smooth. It feels wrong.

“It's quite a nice place,” says the light, “Soft grass, fertile dirt, plenty of animals... I bet you'd make the most wonderful fertilizer. Don't you agree?”

You level your gaze at the small, pompous orb, clenching your jaw. The feeling returns. That burning in your chest. Your hands ball into fists, the bones clinking against each other, scraping out a horrible melody.

The light shimmers, its surface coloring with orange and green. It laughs like a jester, cackling away like you're the funniest thing in the universe.

Your bones grind together, making a sound that hurts your ears. You stop, quickly, though the light seems to have understood.

“Elements? This is not about elements!” laughs the light, “Who do you think you are, assuming a thing like that? Silly giant. Silly human.”

This time, you do not move. You simply think, sounding out the question in your mind.

    “Can I reinc-”

It doesn't give you time to finish. “REINCARNATE? YOU?” It circles you once, twice, three times, laughing hysterically, “Not likely, madam. Lives aren't just given out willy-nilly, you know.”

This time, you are determined to make yourself heard. Interestingly, the light lets you finish your question this time. “Who or what are you, and what is the purpose of this meeting?”

The orb turns green, then blue, then red again, taking on a purplish hue around its outside. Its single eye splits into three, and focuses on something above you.

“Do not concern yourself with who I am. You are here because you are about to die. You are here because I have killed you. You are here because you don't belong, sir.” It floats close to your face, its eyes recombining into one, “You don't belong.”

“You'll be waiting for a while, then.” Your eyes smile back at the orb. “Another two centuries, at least.”

The light dims, finally becoming pitch black, until nothing remains but the single, orange eye. A far-off star, burning brightest white, appears behind it, calling for you. The eye slowly takes on a deep, reddish hue as you grab the white, flashing point, pulling it with all your might.

“Human,” says the horrible, blackened thing, “I do not dislike you. I do not wish you ill. Much.”

The orb returns, blazing yellow like the sun on a clear day, its eye subsuming into its surface as it grows. “I have been challenged. I will not back down. You do not belong.” Bolts of fire erupt from the ever-growing sphere, arcing back into it with an audible splash. “I offered you a chance. I put on my best face...” The sphere splits, cracking at the edges, as thick black liquid bubbles from it, dripping down into the void.

The sphere laughs, once, as you are pulled away. “You will suffer. All that know you will suffer. You will return, if only to stop the pain.”

For an instant, you feel Hretmar enter this space, his arms folding around you. You ask him to wait, for one last second.

“You know what?” Two bony hands extend in a single-finger salute. “Fuck you.”

The sphere explodes. Its black, putrid guts fly in every direction as a diamond of ice detonates inside it, ripping it to pieces. The cool, yellow light dies with its body, leaving nothing but the mangled flesh, to fall for all eternity.

And as you return to the light, reaching for the blue canvas of the sky, you can hear a faint, soft laughter, fading into nothing.
