  • Over the past 48 hours 4chan's formspring page has gotten over 12,000 questions, and I've received over 3,000 e-mails. Many thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and sent me a message! I was able to respond to a few hundred e-mails and had hoped to start answering questions on formspring, but it seems that the number of questions broke the page. Once that's sorted out, I'll sift through them and answer as time allows. Thanks again for all of the support!

In other news, /rs/ now processes MediaFire/MegaUpload/a bunch of other links correctly (this had been broken for months). The old links should be updated in 24-48 hours. Thanks to Popcorn Mariachi for spontaneously appearing and fixing this.

You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a mage beyond peer. You have faced death. You have come back alive.

    Previous Thread: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZEZKXW9Z

You wake in the familiar comfort of the Hall, your eyes slowly fluttering open at the sound of voices.

“I just wouldn't know where to start. This is... Above and beyond anything I've ever seen,” Says one, somewhere off to the side. It's hard to see his face.

Another speaks, in front of you. “Do what you can. We can't-” He notices that you're awake, and catches himself. He leans closer.

It's Sahl, his face creased with pity and concern. “How are you feeling, Maya? What happened?”

You feel numb all over. Your arms and legs refuse to move, though you know they're there. All you can do is nod your head, and try to speak. It hurts to move your jaw. It feels oddly heavy, like there is a weight pulling it down. You manage as best you can.

    >What do you say?

A quick glance confirms that the majority of your body is wrapped in faintly-glowing bandages, presumably provided by Jerith. Your arms and legs are thin, bony things, hard points pressing against the white material. Your chest and midsection are wrapped as well, your ribs jutting out like fingers curling around your body. Everything is numb.

Jerith speaks from somewhere in the shadows. "I can fix it. Don't worry. You'll be fine."

You went to explore the ruins halfway to Ellever, on an endurance run with the pieces of armor you had acquired during timeskip. There, you were attacked by an immensely powerful creature of fire, and nearly died. While unconscious, you spoke with an unknown being, who knew that you were originally human, and didn't belong here. You rejected death, and Hretmar saved you, bringing you back to town.

Jerith explains, in his best bedside manner, what shape you're in. Your arms, legs, and torso are badly burned, in some places down to the bone. You've lost most of your muscle mass and almost all of your nerves in your limbs. The armor protected your torso and head somewhat, so the damage is not as great there. The heat damaged your eyes severely, and you've lost most of your hair. It will take at least three weeks of constant effort to put you back together. Even then, it won't be perfect.

Eron suggests that you get the armor implanted, like one of the army experimentals. Sahl rebukes him for wanting to turn you into a 'monstrous war machine'.

As far as the incursions, they are growing more numerous and calling more creatures. Earth mages are being summoned from all over the country to assist in sealing the pits, and the great universities have entered a partnership with the Conclave to find a way to predict the invasions, locate them, and turn them back before they come to a head. Most of the guilds are being contracted to provide support for the military.

Perin is now throwing almost as much into this war as it is on the Southern front.

    >>8313263
It would be a double-edged sword. The armor would increase your weight, forcing your body to keep up by upping muscle mass and energy reserves. However, once you were exhausted, it would be even more difficult to move.

Consensus on contact? Perhaps it would be better to notify the military that there is an earth mage who is willing to help, but needs time to recover (for whatever reason), and leave it at that.

Three weeks have passed. Jerith performed admirably, working himself to exhaustion every day to give you back what you've lost, regenerating your muscles and skin with that beautiful purple light. Over a week ago, Bem returned, practically dragging Ames into the Hall, haggling with him over the price of his services even as the poor priest was recovering from the shock of seeing you in such a state of... disrepair.

With the two mages working in tandem, you've been healed completely, with only a few patches of discoloration to show for your latest encounter with burning death. Your muscles feel strained and ache constantly, but as you're easing into rehabilitation, you've found that your strength has not decreased as much as you thought. You can see just as well in the dark as always, and you have your hair back, though it's only to your shoulders now. Ames has offered to see about removing what scars you have, if you want.

The priest was quite surprised to learn of all the things you've done here, and your skill in protecting and expanding the town, despite how easy it would be for you to plunder it and move on. In the week he's been here, he's come around a bit, though he is still quite afraid of you and stays far away when you're moving.

Bem brought with him a crate of small flasks, each filled with a drop or two of magical liquid suspended in water. Unfortunately, the temple clinic in Grennet doesn't carry potions in 'Mega' size, so Jerith's been working on a Giant-level dose. Ames, at the elder's request, brought an amulet enchanted with a healing aura. You don't know how much good it will do, but you've been wearing it as a bracelet anyway.

The twins have gotten in touch with Intelligence through the link in Bell. Word is that the Conclave has already figured out how to pinpoint incursions all the way from the Capitol, and that they can even see directly into the mantle, where the filaments are multiplying. The spells used to create those filaments cannot yet be detected reliably, but according to the military, (this is classified) they have the same quality as most Forusian magic.

The military has been discreetly informed of a non-human earth mage living in a rural area, who offers their talent if it can be used. Officers are understandably wary about using non-humans, especially considering the normal traits of Ulls, not to mention the stigma associated with the more 'primitive' races, like trolls and, of course, Frost Giants. Fortunately, you don't have to be a soldier to assist the military, and with the twins on your side, you could probably insert 'can't draft me' as a condition for your work.

Hretmar has regained the power he expended saving you from the elemental and bringing you back to town. You thanked him thoroughly, and he replied that he used to be able to do things like that all the time, and he should do whatever he can to protect you, seeing as you are his only real follower. He has helped you get in touch with some of the other gods of cold, as well as a deity of air and two lords of water.

The gods of cold are receptive, but most don't see any point in helping you, since the incursions are actually drawing fire creatures away from their own constituents. The three that are nearly as reasonable as Hretmar are willing to work with you, but at the price of you being indebted to them. The air god didn't want anything to do with you, and the two beings of water didn't want to get involved, because they had a pact with a pantheon of fire gods, and they weren't about to get into a war over something like this.

Most of the gods you know of appear to exist regardless of who knows or cares about them. According to Hretmar, it is possible for mortals to create their own deity, but it is not easy, nor is it guaranteed to produce what they wanted. Some gods are concerned that without worship, they will fade into nothing, but they tend to be the paranoid sort anyway.

    >>8314421
He thinks it would be unwise to contract the assistance of a being that will only help because of what it expects to gain from you later. It would be too easy to enslave yourself to the whims of a god without knowing it.

As for the thing you met on your deathbed, its power was greater than Hretmar and all of his brethren combined. It was not an elemental god, insofar as it was not confined to the sphere of fire. Its knowledge of your origin would seem to indicate either a reader of minds or something connected to whatever brought you here. Its motivations are unknown.

Just thinking out loud here, but what if we retaliate in some way against Forus to try and stop these incursions? We do have that cold tablet with a powerful (and probably very pissed) cold entity. If we were to release it in Forus, those mages who are causing these incursions would probably have to be diverted to deal with it.

Regardless, uplifting the frost giants to civilized behaviour will (hopefully) not be necessary. Yet.

That would be more likely to accelerate their plans. Right now, their intention seems to be only to divert material from the war effort, so that Forus can regain the territory it has lost. If they fell under internal attack as well, they might just push harder, so they could call a cease-fire quickly after pushing Perin back.

We need to out ourselves to the authorities, just so we can move about without having to worry about fire demons AND the local military. Ask the twins which of the local military leaders would be most likely to accept our help and not screw us over for being a frost giant, then offer them our aid in killing demons and sealing pits.

Take our stash of gems and hire the most powerful mage we can afford to permanently enchant our magma steel armor with the best fire protection and mass reduction spells he has.

Get some high quality +luck and +healing and +heat resistance amulets/rings/tatoos/whatever to wear underneath our armor. Get a pile of spare magical gear for the village's other defenders as well. We need to turn all of our useless gems into useful equipment, forget about buying a noble title, we'll earn it the hard way.

Practice our healing magic on ourselves as we recover.

Look into installing some kind of localized demon detection spells around Dreamwood so the villagers will have some kind of early warning before the ground opens up.

Your best bet as far as leaders go would be Ceril, daughter of a middle-rank Intelligence divinator. She holds no ill thought toward most races, except when they are senselessly violent or oppose justice. She recognizes that there is no absolute racial character, and that the 'good troll' is not just a myth. She has several Ulls and Hagrek in her unit, which is stationed in the Fairnest garrison, South of here. Her reputation for competence, fairness, and friendliness overrides most peoples' immediate reaction to her strange ideas.

The best enchanters reside in the cities, and the best gear is military-quality, sold either in the metropolitan areas or near the front. If you want the best money can buy, you can have it, in about two months.

A question about the metaphysics of this world: are there conceptual entities separate from the gods? As in, for example, a God of Death that is separate from the actual idea of Death? If so, we might want to look into speaking with the actual concepts of Water, Earth and Life, instead of the gods of same. The conceptual entities are likely to take greater affront to somebody giving Fire greater dominion over the world, and are less likely to be constrained in how they respond to such an affront to the natural balance.

To move them would not only require power at least equal to whatever is creating them, but skill with fire beyond anything you stand a chance of learning without accidentally killing yourself.

The height of technology would be a pocketwatch or an ornithopter, and neither are very common. Magic takes the place of a lot of advanced technology, doing things that mechanical devices can't, like light up a whole city at night.

He tells you that 'harnessing lightning' is pretty much the coolest thing he's ever heard of, and if you can get large amounts of power without involving magic at all, well, that's perfect. It has been three and a half weeks. Fully healed, with a heavy but durable suit of Magma Steel armor over your fireproof suit, you set off for the Fairnest garrison, avoiding any routes that would risk you being discovered. Fortunately, there were no nearby incursions, though a troop of horsemen did pass on the road beside the forest, probably on their way to one. You brought the giant-size healing potions, all ten of them, as well as the last two regular ones just in case. A fair amount of gems should serve you well if you need to buy your way out of trouble, or if there happens to be a 'total protection from fire, heat, and burning' amulet for sale in Fairnest.

You arrived at the garrison without incident, hiding yourself in the forest as your 'party' circled around to the road, approaching the installation looking as non-suspicious as possible. Since Ceril is the daughter of an Intelligence man, she might already know you're here, but the lack of spears pointed at your face seems to indicate that she is either unaware or waiting to see how this plays out.

It takes little more than an hour for one the twins to return, with a uniformed, tough-looking woman and four men with crossbows behind them. Kel, Bem, and the other twin are nowhere to be seen, which you assume means they are being held as insurance against you potentially murdering everyone.

As they get closer, you see that the woman has her right hand on some sort of holster. She's prepared. The twin stops at the edge of the forest, slowly signaling for you to come out. You do, carefully, with your weapons in reach but your hands up. The woman's eyes widen when she sees you, and she tenses, as do the men with her. But she shakes her head, and they lower their weapons, for the moment. They eye your armor with great surprise, exchanging confused glances.

“I am Ceril, Master of this outpost. You, I presume, are Maya Terrasdottir,” says the woman, never wavering. Her right hand stays on the holster.

    You nod.

“Your situation has been explained to me,” Ceril continues, “And I am inclined to believe it, considering the source of the information.” The twin gives you a quick smile as the woman speaks, letting you know that everything's alright.

Ceril's expression softens. “I am prepared to overlook certain aspects of your arrival, provided that you swear to me that it was not your intent to attack this nation, or to cause it to waste its precious resources attempting to find you.”

We're rich, and we will live for centuries IF we don't get immolated or dismembered again. Buy the best, enchant our armor, our fireproof suit, our underwear, our skin, and our bones if possible. Get any amulets, talismans, rings of power or lucky rabbit's feet we can buy. Get the same for anyone who will be fighting on the front lines for us. In fact, get a sack of magic protection items that we can just hand out to any random nameless soldiers who end up in our squad, that'll make us popular.

Total fire immunity for a living being requires godly levels of power. That would cost almost all of what you've got.

90% is doable. It would make it possible for you to step into a blast furnace unarmored, and walk back out half a minute later with nothing more than a strong tan. It would cost about three quarters of your original horde, 70-80 gems.

80% is modest, for a Frost Giant. With that, you could run through several bonfires and be just fine. About 50 gems would do it.

Please note that a full-body enchantment would provide equal protection to your entire self, but being fire and heat-immune only protects you from attacks that are not powerful enough to breach the enchantment itself. Full immunity would require a near-act of god to penetrate, but 90% and 80% could be temporarily dispeled by human mages.

Even 100% protection is only a guarantee as long as the enchantment is operating unimpeded.

Well since it seems like we're going up against someone who has more power than a god, I don't think it's worth getting 100%. 80-90% seems better.

my opinion is to go big.
reach for ninety percent on self, and remember to look into some fire and ice enchantments for weapons.

Remember, thats from our massive horde so Far.. we are planning to go into war against hordes and legions of these things, so I think there will be some chances to roll more 20's on loot tests later.

    rolled =

    Other enchantments to Consider:
    Troll/werewolf level regeneration
    Luck

Also a spell that might come in handy if we ever head north:
The ability to use an enemy's frost attack to heal ourself.

Also, you said 70-80 gems from our original hoard. What's our total with our new gem total from the 3 fire demons?

At least two hundred, and several ruby geodes, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, without the archive, I cannot check, and I did not record it before.

Alright. Plus diamond geode. And when you said 100% would take all we have, did you mean out of the original hoard, or everything, and including/excluding the diamond geode?

Everything, including all geodes except the diamond one.

We need two more archive requests to get it archived. Come on, /tg/!

Than it's definitely not worth it.

What other kind of protective magics are there, can we get some protection from falling rocks, or protection from getting shot in the eye with an arrow magic, how about a charm that keeps all of our limbs firmly attached? The demons have sharp claws to go with the whole firey eyebeams thing, and I don't even know what kind of stuff the rock spiders can do.
