    Continuation of:
SUmmary: OPs GM is awesome, running a Merc Air Force RPG with sweet sounding mechanics/ideas
OP chose a F-4 Phantom with TG help
First mission is a strike on some terorrist airstrip.
OP decided on Wild Weasel loadout with help from /tg/
OP posted flyable plane list (40+ Entries!)
We all became insanely jealous and anxiously await more info from OP.

And the mission (again, stolen from OP)
    BlackFlag Internal Document #100298

    Mission Briefing “Horse Therapy”
    Deployment: Kisangani
    Pancake: Kisangani
Alternate: None (We are still negotiating with the provisional government)
    AAR: None
    AWACS: None
CSAR: MI-24 Hind + Jaeger Flight. Eight Million Sortie Fee if utilized

Contract Employer: Ministre de Sécurité Externale, France

Objective: Destruction of suspected Sudan terrorist training camp and airfield located at the old Marida airfield, just inside the Sudanese border. Primary targets are the airfield runway, fuel dump in the southeast, and the command bunker to the north northwest.

Background: These guys have been a thorn in the side of France's efforts to pacify the region. Due to UN regulations as well as their own civil government issues, the French have not had the ability to simply remove this training camp. That's where we come in. Taking out the command bunker will most likely remove some key leadership positions, and with the airstrip gone, will force the OPFOR to move on the ground, where the French security force has a presence and a good chance of catching and stopping them.

(Part two to follow, long doc)
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)00:34 No.8538571
And the rest of the mission Brief:
Intel (HUMINT free): OPFOR likely disorganized, undertrained. Equipment status rated at no better then barely serviceable. Most equipment unmanned unless alert given. OPFOR operates off grid, and does not benefit from outside intel, support, elint.
Air Assets: Two MiG-17s, One MiG-21, Two Bell Huey Gunships.
Surface Assets: SA-2 system, 4xZSU-23 at objective.
Intel (Remote Imaging free): Attached you will find the latest keyhole pass. We've marked off targets and defences. We could not find the fourth ZSU-23, and suspect that the OPFOR has begun camo-netting the emplacements, or simply placed it inside for maintenance.

Threat Assessment: Very Low. The biggest threats will be from the MiG-21 and the SA-2 system, neutralize them first, and the rest of this mission should be a cakewalk.

ROE: No limits in Sudanese Airspace. Return fire only in DRC airspace.

You can get an F-16C for $20million, or an E for $30million.

Going by the program cost an F-20 was $60million (20 planes at $1.2billion total cost). That's not a real valid measurement but it's the only one I've got.

Baw, I wish I could play in this OP. It's totally different than anything else I've played /tg/ wise, and I'm a gigantic militaryfag. How much RP is there besides air combat?

I'm certainly really interested in seeing how these kinds of mechanics might work out, and I love the expense management, as it's always been a part of my favorite action games. (Armored Core, Ace Combat.)

As for the Block 60, I don't know the individual unit price, but the UAE program was 3 billion dollars. The number of units projected were 80; how much of the billions went directly into each unit's price is uncertain as far as I know.

Also consider that the Phantom was one of the least aerodynamic figher craft ever designed and essentially moved only through sheer force, only being less than a winged rocket because of the technicality of possessing an air intake up-front.

I've heard F-4 pilots describe the plane as essentially a flying bus. Any problem it couldn't solve through finesse, it did through sheer brute force (which was pretty much everything). Blunt and straight to the point.

However, it's still an old airframe. There's a reason the Air Force literally uses surplus F-4's as target practice now.

And loud. Seriously, those turboprops are so fucking loud, NATO fighter pilots that regularly shadowed these things closely during the Cold War would suffer hearing problems after a while.

Other airforces still have them in combat services and at the very least the German and Israeli ones are modernised to a degree where they're still viable combat planes even when going up against 4th gen fighters.

As for the whole mechanics of the F-4, it isn't called The Triumph of Thrust over Aerodynamics for no reason. Well that, or it's short nickname: The Flying Brick.

To continue that line of thought, she'd also probably have cosmetic surgery done to be appealing and capable to other "clients" and is otherwise a little heavy set and envious of the attention her lighter sister Mig-29 gets.

So the Ms Blackbird would be the object of Ms Foxbat's hatred, because she would run around the neighborhood outpacing all the cops AND Ms Foxbat, before stopping at another man's house to drink some 400$ a bottle triple distilled Liquor, before doing the same thing again? And be the object of lust of every man in the neighborhood.

And when Ms. Foxbat isn't in rehab/reconstructive surgery she'd wax nostalgic about her glory days when she was the envy and terror of the girls down the street Ms. Mirage and the NATO gang. She'd talk about her bouts around the Mediterranean the most and how her sisters couldn't even get close to her. But all of her stories are mostly hot air and only vaguely coherent from one iteration to the next as they mix myth, clandestine spy operations, and seething hatred for Ms. Blackbird for stealing her thunder.

Ah yes, SU-25. She was born with a mental handicap and was always a little slower than her sisters. The doctors say she was lucky to be able to communicate at all and the best she could hope for was simple, primitive coordination of tools.

She boxes too... her simple nature is either exacerbated by this or a benefit to the hobby.
She is also long known as the easy one, having slept around nearly everywhere... repeatedly, even in abusive relationships. Her biggest problem appears to be an inability to live without constant support and guidance.

So the Rafale is the exotic underperforming quiet girl down the street that will blow your mind the moment you give her a chance.

Ms. Mirage, her mother, is a little more brash and obnoxious having traveled the world over. Also seemingly exotic looking, but under the hood there isn't anything special going on. She's almost a staple example of "average". In fact, she's pretty slow on the up take as well but once things get moving she hit's her stride and really shines at whatever she works at.

So she's not the fastest option out there. And like I said there are enough after market mods out there, including some upgrades that make it competent in AtA, that you can mod it however you like it.

There's a reason private aggressor squadrons still run them. If they get past the long range AtA missile envelope of modern aircraft, by hugging the deck etc, they can out turn and outperform practically anything, especially the huge modern boys that rely on speed and range to keep them safe.

Plus it can perform more roles than most aircraft half its age.

She's a smart girl with expensive tastes. Unlike her rather disruptive sister Ms. Falcon, she paid attention to her parents and is generally a by-the-numbers shut in with deep family ties. She goes out of her way to make life easier for her family, much to her own expense.

She loved to party from time to time with her aging aunt tomcat till her aging bones couldn't take it anymore and passed on.

She suffered a slight midlife crisis at that point, ran up huge debts- acquiring even more expensive habits, gained weight, and went to college to learned new trades traveled abroad.

Ms. Tomcat is a heavy set woman that is graceful and somewhat wise. She drinks... allot. It's one of her biggest failings.
But despite it she's always looking forward and guiding those around her when necessary. Her children and relatives often call her prophetic at seeing things over the horizon.

    Uncle Hawkeye calls her obvious.

She's been around the block more than once and has been photographed and adored in cinema for a time but has since settled down.
Before she passed on, the general consensus was that she was one of the finest pieces of trim on the block despite her age- and she was all natural at that.

I still say that A-37-b Dragonflies would be far better suited to the sortie mission, given their speed, gau-8 gatling for strafing runs, and capacity for bomblets and napalm.

more importantly, however, they have a vastly superior service to flight ratio (2 hours service per hour of flight... compared withthe F22's _30_ hours of maintainance per 1 hour of flight....), which is essential for a small unit. They have a far shorter takeoff and landing, and are designed to be capable of takeoff from sub-standard runways, and are fitted with engine intage grilles to prevent ingestion of debris. Unlike F4s which need a good landing strip, and much more support.

    my mistake, Gau-2, not 8.

however, in a sortie of "Destruction of suspected Sudan terrorist training camp and airfield", a Gau-2 minigun is easily enough to do the job of ground attack, given it'd be extremely unlikely to be facing armoured vehicles.

    Oooh. Hard one.

Born fraternal triplets, Lightening II's physical similarities frequently confuses its parents as to who is who. Technically 3 different daughters, mingling in 3 different cliques, they all masquerade as the same person to the chargrin of neighbors, parents, and friends alike.

Though they collectively want to be known as "Lightening II" their parents refer to them as "retirement", as it was their solution to a budget concerns and how to fund their own twilight years by off loading expenses onto their "one" daughter.

In practice though, Lightening II is an expensive unruly set of teenagers that frequently go off into their own directions the moment their parents aren't paying attention or they can't come to an agreement.

OOOH! Good add. I forgot about that.

Truth though. look at the respective weight of the tomcat to any other "fighter". the tomcat is a fighter in name only, it's more like a pheonix missile delivery platform. It does other things as a sort of side bonus.

Exotic yet local, she's deceptively old. It's unclear just how old Spirit really is despite her youthful appearance as her past is clouded in mystery. Her obvious parents would make her in her late 50s, easily. But her body would imply late 20s at the most.

She never talks, ever. She's the embodiment of unobtainable.

She occasionally leaves her house though, that was formerly thought as being haunted and abandoned, for long drives before coming home late at night.

It's unclear what she's doing so late at night. Occasionally the Sukhoi family elders tell wild tales of ghosts haunting just beyond the grasp of visual acuity that eerily resemble Spirit.

She's the angry goth chick. No one noticed her through most of primary school, but they all perked up when she showed up on their radar in High School. People thought she was highly exotic, kind of quiet, and possibly able to go columbine at the drop of a hat. However, High School were her glory days, as an adult, she's suffered a brutal mugging by a gang of serbian blue collar workers, and never really recovered. She has no marketable job skills in today's economy, and seems to be waiting for death to take her.

Holy cow. Thanks for pointing that out. I don't recall the Raptor weighing that much.

The Pheonix missile was an awesome platform no doubt. But as a close in superiority fighter, there are plenty of planes that do the roll better than the Tomcat and the navy realized that. The tomcat flies out, fast, deploys its missiles at extreme ranges against multiple targets and hopefully blows away whole incoming bomber formations, then lets the real purpose built attack craft do their thing. The tomcat doesn't do much else very well.
And when the threat of soviet bomber formations is nil, so is the tomcat's future.

And I didn't mean to imply Ms. Tomcat is fat, she's just a healthier build... big boned-curvy, as it were.

Ah, Ms. Typhoon. Elizabeth; Liz to the British, Eliza to the Italians, Lisbet to the Germans, and a slightly sore point to any of them. She's an 8 with a traumatic past who thinks she's a 10.

Introduced to you as "a European socialite", it quickly transpired that she was raised in the 1980s and hasn't quite got over the fall of the Berlin Wall yet, nor the fact that large shoulderpads are out of fashion. It turns out that she had a rough childhood, with her strange menagerie of parents constantly arguing over how to raise her.

She could have been quite a sprinter, but instead has tried her hand at a wide variety of hobbies, none of which she's naturally talented at, and as a result has put on quite a bit of extra weight, albeit mostly muscle.

Don't get me wrong, she's still not bad. But while she thinks she's in the top tier, she's not as flexible as her Russian neighbours, nor as hot as the Americans; Typhoon was sadly past her best from the day you first met her.

Ms Raptor laughs, but is secretly worried that such a low class chick can be so close to her own performance, and requires far less expensive jewelery to do it.

That being said, Ms Typhoon is still in therapy following her troubled childhood, and recent progress has been made. She's been spotted trying on new clothes and accessories that make her quite the force to be reckoned with on the block.

When describing the physical features of Hercules, ' lunch lady-ish' comes up a lot. Not content with such features, she decided to under go risky surgery to be more appealing to... someone.

She wanted the features that the younger more lithe women had, like guns... big guns. She wanted a feature to make the 'smaller' girls jealous.
And in what was probably a typographical error on the surgery documents, she got just that.

Her guns are the biggest on the block and sit lop sided to one side. She's eager to show them off too, and prove just how superior her guns are and how attractive she is, with her additions being barely contained in her frame.

She slow to any party for various reasons. Her tremendous heft does nothing to get her there any faster.

How did this breathtaking air mercenary setting thread get turned into total animu faggotry?

I mean come on, we have the coordinates, we know the strength of both sides, let's come up with some scenarios.

How can they save money and still ensure mission success with redundant objectives? What could go wrong and how should they react? How is the weather in southern Sudan? Are there sand storms? How far to the border? Which jet is the slowest?

    There's plenty to figure out.

She's an older woman with wide set eyes who didn't seem quite right on a good day. She reminisces about long ago parties where seemingly epic things occurred but never answers specific questions about them.
There is a quiet solace among her friends regarding the events they rarely talk specifically about but share intimately. Listening to their stories is akin to hearing a skipping record, where the bumps are assumed to be known and never questioned.

She "retired" many times but always found a new job, it wasn't in her blood to quit, and went on to do just about every dirty job she was presented. None of which would have been considered easy, or even sane.

    Good points

Hopefully we'll soon be able to discuss them taking into account the game's mechanics once the GM has posted/uploaded the rules he's using :)

Good question...unfortunately OP hasn't given us many details...probably because he hasn't gotten the full brief yet either, or he hasn't considered the info relevant.

Money saving techniques include iron bomb lobbing(check it out) and excessive use of gun pods and unguided rockets. All it takes is one on the deck pass by OPs ground attack and multi role aircraft to neutralize the AA.

I'm worried about the approach though. If that one canyon OP has told us about is the only realistic approach where you can stay under the radar i'm guessing the "missing" AA platform is probably hidden somewhere close to the end of that canyon run.

They may be lazy but we don't know if they're stupid.

    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)13:40 No.8546448
It isn't a canyon. Just a hilled landscape, just enough to block the SA-2 target radar. And it cannot fire at close in targets. VERY CLOSE in targets.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)13:41 No.8546459
    >How can they save money and still ensure mission success with redundant objectives?
loadout optimization. Specialize the payloads of various flight group members for specific tasks. Eliminate redundancy. This sacrifices tactical flexibility for the sake of cost reduction, but that's the life of a mercenary right there.

    >What could go wrong and how should they react?
I million different things. I would suggest planning for emergency retreat, rapid reaction to enemy reinforcements, and strict wingman assignments with sharply defined roles.

    >How is the weather in southern Sudan? A desert, typically the best possible weather for flying in. Also means no cloud cover, but that doesn't really affect much. High visibility, high glare from cockpit glass/instruments. Using the sun to your advantage should be a priority.

    >Are there sand storms? If there are, the mission will be cancelled. Make sure the emrcs have accurate weather intel immediately before takeoff to ensure they don't waste money on fuel that they use to turn around and go home. Really not much of a danger though.

    >How far to the border?
being a mercenary group, borders wont make much difference. Should know distance between home base and target for calculations of bingo fuel. Should contact contract provider about possibility of in-flight refueling (also, make sure everyone has that capability)
    >Which jet is the slowest?
not much of an issue for anything other than time. All the jets can cruise with the slowest until they get into the combat airspace. After that, speed is the responsibility of the individual pilot and his machine.

Just a quick brainstorm for you

I'm not worried about the SA2, i'm worried about the 4 ZSU23s, one of which is unaccounted for. Stick one on the end of those hills/valley and it'll be a hard day for mother.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)13:47 No.8546529
    I know.

AWACS is handy for large operations against equal forces. In this scenario it shouldn't be needed.

if there's no in-flight refueling, I would suggest our merry band of mercs invest in drop tanks. Keep in mind, however, that the mercs should be loathe to drop the tanks when they run empty. They may not cost much relative to other equipment, but that is no reason to throw money at the desert sands unless you absolutely have too

Ah, Draken. Responsible of 99% of UFO sightings in Scandinavia during it's service perioid. God, I love that silhouette.

That aside, this thread is indeed something grand. It's a case study of how the phenomenon of moe anthropomorphism must have been born. Plus it touches the subject of modern mercenary campaigns, which is one of my pet projects.

How would fa/tg/uys generally react to a politically loaded merc campaign? Ignite brush wars in western africa on behalf of French uranium mining outfits? Torch fishing villages in south-east asian banana states to ferret out militias? Deliver revenge-for-hire in the balkans? Troubleshoot for mobsters in the 'stans and Russia?

I worry that the games could get very heavy and depressing at times, or might even net me accusations of racism.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)14:17 No.8546907

I would enjoy playing those sort of games. It would be different. Roleplaying isn't always about being big damn heroes. While my moral compass would be spinning wildly, it is a game, and if it GMed properly I'd have the choice to do things differently.

The best part about the options in this RPG is that you don't want to take the best plane, which is kind of boring.

You want to take the plane that speaks to you the most. Given the choice between a Raptor or a Tomcat, I'd take the cat everytime. It just has more character.
