Your name is Maya Terrasdottir. You were once human, once a Frost Giant. Now you are a spirit of the upper planes, bound to your patron god. You have choices to make.

The lights blink out like tiny stars, one by one. They leave you in darkness, in the fields of the mind, Hretmar your only companion. He smiles, pulling you to him, gesturing to the black expanse ahead. And he breathes, ever so softly, his eyes shining with a power you can only dream of.

You see the world, hanging in nothing. The solid greens and tans of continents, braced by the vast blueness of oceans. It turns, rotating silently beneath your vision, slowly bringing certain places into view. A white-rimmed border, enclosing thousands upon thousands of tiny blue-green points, sitting in wait. You move closer.

Perin fills your vision, edging out the fading form of Hretmar, swallowing your mind with its cities, rivers, lakes, and towns, a million places all in your view at once. Slowly, you cast them away, looking for the two among them that would hold your attention. You find them, bringing them together, gazing on them, taking everything in. Your adopted village, where so much time and effort was spent. Your garrison, where you found acceptance and responsibility. Both, frozen in time, the people standing about like models, all beyond your touch.

Hretmar floats beside you, his form now clear and sharp against the background. He speaks, finally, bringing you out of it.

“SEE AS I, KNOW AS I,” he tells you, eyes twinkling, “THIS IS YOUR WORLD TO A GOD.” A pause, as he composes himself. “I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SHOW YOU THIS IN THE FUTURE, PERHAPS IN A HUNDRED YEARS. BUT YOU INSISTED ON EXPEDIENCE.”

He closes his eyes, floating back, entwining his hands behind him. “MAYA. THOUGH YOU ARE MY ONLY...” He inhales. “I... CANNOT PROTECT YOU. I CANNOT ENSURE YOUR SAFETY. YOU... SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON ME. ON ONE WHO HAS FALLEN SO FAR.”

List of known sentients, as promised: (sorry for the delay)

    -Hagrek

They are stout, beastly things that are covered in fur and look rather like wookies, though they're usually shorter than humans. They are poison-resistant, quite strong, and tend to enjoy physical work, which sees them employed in mines and factories. Despite their characteristics, they are as intelligent as humans, and have been known to craft staggeringly beautiful works of art.

    -Ulls

Ulls resemble upright-walking lizards, complete with scales and tail. They prefer not to associate closely with humans, instead providing their services at a distance, often through proxies. The Ull are tall, fast, and difficult to kill, making them fine soldiers, messengers, and assassins. About ten percent of the army's bulk consists of self-contained Ull Regiments.

    -Frost Giants

Once a great civilization, but now little more than marauding raiders, their minds clouded with rage. Reasoning with them is now mostly impossible, but they can be swayed by their own greed, if enough riches exist to sate them. The World's Peak is their home.

    -Orcs

Tall, strong, and very agressive, Orcs are thick-skinned brutes that tend to prefer raiding to any constructive action. They are vulnerable to fire, but rarely conscious of that fact. In areas where Orcs have not been entirely eradicated or enslaved, other civilizations can expect infrequent attacks from them.

    >>8584704
    -Goblins

Generally about half the size of a human and nearly as intelligent, goblins are quick and cunning, with a natural aptitude for earth and nature magic. They tend to congregate in nomadic bands, wandering through forests and swamps, living on whatever vermin they can catch.

    -Mountain Giants

Reclusive, philosophically-minded beings, the Mountain Giants are given to contemplation and communion with the natural world. Their culture favors isolation from other races, even more so than the Ulls', so humans know little of them. It is rumored that almost all of their race are magically attuned, but strangely vulnerable to evil forces.

    -Aquen

River and ocean-dwellers, capable of living on the surface for only limited periods, the Aquen are an innately magical race, but only one out of thousands is likely to have the capability to learn to cast spells in the traditional sense. They somewhat resemble sharks, with a single thick tail that can separate into two limbs to allow them to walk. Three small eyes are set on each side of their heads, but are little-used because of the Aquens' great reliance on echolocation.

    >>8584720
    -Bira

Inhabitants of dark caves and overgrown forests, the Bira are normally very friendly and tolerant, despite their appearance. They are eight-legged, with numerous tiny eyes ringing a black, armored abdomen, and three clusters of four or five larger eyes dotting a head suppporting large, serrated mouthparts and two grasping mandibles. They often speak to other races by short-range telepathy, as they are unable to emulate the vocal noises of most humanoid species. As they have no manipulator limbs, they cannot use most tools or weapons, though some of their mages learn telekinetic spells to make up for this deficiency.

    -Rahm

The Rahm are desert-dwellers, living where there is an abundance of sunlight. They are quite adept at surviving without moisture or any kind of sustenance for extended periods, and have been known to hibernate for up to three years beneath the shifting sands. They are humanoid, with a mouthless face framed by gill-like structures that filter the dry air of the wastes. Not much is known about their culture, as they tend to avoid other sentients and have difficulty communicating with them.

I would also like that we start working on magic or whatever it's equivalent is up here...We probably gods of magic around so we could probably learn really fast if we wanted to.

Other goals left over from when we were mortal that we should try and pursue:

You can speak through Hretmar, using the library link, or try direct telepathy. The latter tends to be more jarring and more energy intensive.

    >>8584985
This plane is a level above the world, but it is unique to this planet, like a shell that orbits it. The gods that exist here only have power in this world, and most confine themselves to a much smaller area, such as a nation or a city. The plane is incredibly large and filled with wonders, hosting thousands and thousands of deities, and millions or billions of other beings.

Gods here are simply another class of being, very powerful but also limited in their actions. There are many planes above this one, and many 'gods' inhabiting them, becoming more and more powerful with the ascent.

As for learning magic, if you ever return to corporeal form, most or all of the magic you learn in the planes will be lost to you.

Keeping your magic is, for the most part, impossible. Some skills, like telepathy, can transfer well enough to give you a small ability when you reincarnate. Otherwise, the only way to maintain those skills would be to stay a being of the higher planes, and manifest yourself on the planet as a 'solid' spirit.

It is a shining metropolis miles in diameter, centered around a large, palatial structure ringed by stone-and-metal skyscrapers. Most of the buildings are over ten stories, incorporating what you assume are apartments, connected to each other by walkways above street level. The roads are exceedingly wide, brimming with crowds, carts, and strange vehicles that move on their own. An enormous temple sits near the outskirts, surrounded by small houses and shrines. You assume that the Conclave meets there. All the tall buildings, according to Hretmar, seem to be magically reinforced.

From the Realm of the Gods, you can observe most of the world through Hretmar and the others. Their sight is severely limited outside of Perin, but you could gain plenty of useful knowledge just from looking.

As for physically exploring places on the surface, you would be vulnerable to various demonic forces and to capture or destruction by magical attacks. Being incorporeal, though, you would fear no normal weapon, and anything meant to effect flesh would do nothing to you. As a whole, you would be less vulnerable as a spirit than you would as a Frost Giant, as long as you didn't attract too much attention.

The link tightens further as the entire population of the village gathers in one place, all coming together to hear your words. Both you and Hretmar are burning power fast, so you try to make it as quick as possible. Being a god isn't as easy as it looks.

You explain, succinctly, what has happened recently. You journeyed to the source of the incursions with a party of hand-picked followers from the 'bro gods', having a pretty horrible time but working through it as best you could. At the end of the road, despite your best efforts, one of your number lost their life to the defender of the source, and the others exhausted themselves attempting to immobilize that defender. You managed to destroy the source before your adversary freed himself, but at the end of it, the only thing you could do is release the demon from the tablet, hoping that, as a spirit of ice, it would be the natural enemy of the fire being.

Fortunately, it was, but it wasn't too fond of you, either. Though you saved Perin from consumption by fire, you and four others lost your lives in the process. You were very lucky that the gods were watching, and powerful enough (when working together) to bring all of your souls to their realm, and even offer you the chance to reincarnate. One has already taken that option, and one has decided to remain a spirit for eternity. The others, you included, are undecided at the moment. You thought they should know what transpired, and be assured that you're safe, and you can still come home to them.

The elders, after a bit of debate, tell you that you should do whatever you think is best. Your death, like it or not, frees you from any responsibility or ties to them, by its very nature. That is the way it must be, and if you wish to return to your previous life, you can, and they hope you will, but that's a choice you shouldn't take lightly. Not to say that they won't accept you readily, but death changes things.

The twins joke about you being their 'eye in the sky', but ask you seriously to consider returning, as does Eron. You have done nothing but good for them, and you are a part of the family, to be welcomed home no matter what. Vasian shares that sentiment, noting that he has been accepted much like you were. There is much you have yet to teach, and much that you have to offer. You can do as you please, and become what you wish, but he'd like the opportunity to talk with you when you have the time. Dreman, though he is the newest member of the community, has grown to like you. He would appreciate it if you at least took a vacation in Dreamwood every once in a while. Without you around, the town... lacks something. Something it needs.

Ames, the priest from Grennet, has returned home, but promised to come back sometime. He's not a part of the town, as such, but during the period when he was assisting Jerith in healing you, he came to see you as a person, not a monster. He would probably like to see you again, somewhere down the line.

A quick call to Ilian confirms that the two undecided adventurers are still torn. Supra is less than thrilled about losing all of her magic, complaining about 'wasted effort'. However, she is leaning toward reincarnation, because she always preferred being human; it gave her something of a purpose. Thatos is less sure, since one of his childhood dreams was to be a Guardian, like one of the spirits that defended his home. Hearing him explain further, you think it's like the fantasy version of wanting to be a superhero, except he never grew out of it. He doesn't have many earthly ties, so he wouldn't be sacrificing much.

Loken went back immediately, taking a form as close to his previous body as possible. Since he didn't know any magic, he really lost nothing but time. He has asked that he not be observed or contacted for a while, and the gods are honoring that request. Grimstan, the priest, has become Ilian's servant, and is committed to being something like an Angel or 'messenger' for as long as he is needed. His motivations are unknown, but since he has such great difficulty expressing himself, this is not all that odd. You get the sense that Grim never really belonged among humanity in the first place.

At the end of the day, your choice is your own. You have something like a month before it starts to get difficult to re-assume physical form. Once you acclimate to the realm, you'll be tied to it for the conceivable future, and all the gods you know working together would find it difficult to put you back on the planet. However, if you became a deity yourself, you could learn to manifest an avatar of sorts, and exist simultaneously in both planes. You could also choose to become a spirit being with the innate ability to become solid, though you would not be able to stay tangible for long, at least at first. Decisions, decisions.

The demon is more powerful than Hretmar, and could easily have consumed the souls of the four of you that it killed, resulting in permanent death. It probably wasn't up to fighting all the gods on your side, so it settled for 'only' killing your physical forms. The same goes for the adversary; it returned to its plane of origin upon its death.

After being sealed for so long, the demon is most likely depowered, and working to regain all of its lost strength. It would be inadvisable to fight it alone even now, and once it reaches its full state, opposing it would probably result in your death. The entire Conclave, acting as one, could not defeat it completely. This is why it is more common for spirits such as that to be chained and sealed instead of destroyed outright.

At the moment, your choices are limited to what the gods know of. If you traveled around a bit, you might be able to find additional races, and acquaint the gods with their forms so that you could become one of them as well.

Reconstructive Reincarnation is extremely limited in scope, hence the inability to retain spells learned in a previous life. To construct a body with specific, tailored attributes would require power and knowledge not available to the gods you have contact with.

    >>8586550
Depends. Most can gain more power the same way you gain stamina; by 'exercising' their abilities. Others require worship, sacrifices, rituals, or the like. The focus of the god plays a role in this, so a god of war would find his power increase when his followers were at war, and a god of nature would be stronger during growing seasons.

Easy enough, since they're both offshoots of the same precursor race, according to the gods. Hill Giants, as the offspring are called, are not a proper race, since most are sterile, but can be found, if you're lucky. They are extremely long-lived, highly resistant to cold (though not immune), incredibly fast and agile, and naturally skilled with earth magic. However, most are afflicted with emotional problems, as they inherit a quiet, contemplative nature that is at odds with their other, aggressive half. It is common for them to succumb to schizophrenia within 50 years.

At the risk of sounding boring, I kinda feel that if we use this to get "cured" of being a frost giant, then the quest should end there. This is a frostgiantquest, and while I have no opposition to a "fix" happening, I think that should be the culmination and cutoff point for it. It's what makes this quest special, and interesting.

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple. Hill Giants can live to be almost five hundred years old on average, and it is rumored that they can be made functionally immortal. Not one of them has found a permanent solution to the problem, as it gets continually worse throughout their lives and can only be mitigated, not erased, by magic. It is believed to be a curse from one of the high gods.
