Your name is Maya Terrasdottir. You are a Frost Giant, a citizen of Dreamwood and a defender of the realm, back from the dead. Your thoughts are fractured, your mind pursuing a thousand things at once. You haven't felt this way since the first day, since your arrival here. Everything has turned out to be so much more complicated than you wanted.

Here you are, back on the ground. It's been two weeks since your return to mortal form. So much has changed.

The town is as bright as ever, boasting a dozen new constructions, all up to your definition of 'quality'. Most of the dilapidated barns have been torn down, consolidated into three large, sturdy structures situated at the edges of the palisade. A new granary has been built, along with a guard post and several new houses. All of this was done without you, with only the knowledge of the inhabitants and the designs you left behind. You have brought them prosperity, and they have increased it, working with the tools you have given them.

Only fitting, then, that they have become enamored with you. The giant from another world, courageous in the face of incredible odds (even when she shouldn't be), powerful and wise, compassionate and strong of heart. An example of all they wish to be, and to exceed in their daily lives. Here you sit, against the wall of the underground, much beloved, one who can do no wrong. The gifted ring shines silver in the tiny beam of moonlight, reminding you of how far you have been.

Demons, insane gods, a war against a ruthless enemy, backed by the very element of your weakness. Add to that the silent ring, carrying a conflict all its own. All of these are as weights on your soul, pulling you into nervous indecision. There are questions, as there will always be. You wonder, as you always will, what your next move will be. This is your life.

    Hey Subprocessor DM,

first of all, I would ask you to excuse the lenght of this, even by /tg/'s standards, pathetic post. But after how much I have enjoyed Frost Giant Quest in the past, I consider never posting in your threads again without a word or a RAGEQUIT! post impolite.

Now that this has been said, I just wanted to say thank you for the time you've spent on Frost Giant Quest and for the chance to participate in the last 28 threads. I have had a lot of fun building our mediaeval village into something that started resembling an industrialist utopia powered by technology and magic more and more with every thread. I was nearly shaking from anxiety when we butched our rolls against the first fire elemental. Before that, I jumped out of my chair when we managed to find diamonds inside our diamonds after two successive rolls of natural 20s, probably waking a few of my neighbours in the process. I liked the idea that, although possessing the body of a creature considered barbaric, we were a 4channer with some remaining magical connection to wikipedia. We were awesome, we got shit done. Even when the focus shifted from improving our newfound home to fighting for its security, I always enjoyed your threads so much that I kept my weekends organised around the fact that I would be busy from 9pm to 6am. When I missed a thread I felt incredibly guilty, even if I had a great time with my friends.

Now that I have read Friday's thread I feel like shit for allowing this quest to become so important to me. I did rage, although it was more a feeling of utter disbelief. You decided to include something into this quest where every possible outcome displeases somebody.

Well, the path /tg/ has chosen for our character robs me of my enjoyment of the quest. You ruined it for me, but I guess that is okay. You were the ones who made that quest I enjoyed so much what it was in the first place. Thank you, each of you guys made it a special experience to me. I'll miss it. Subprocessor DM, I sincerely hope that you will continue to run Frost Giant Quest to your and its players' enjoyment and that you had as much fun as I did and will have even more in the future.

    Goodbye

Well, as I would like to see it, we are still intelligent modern 4channer who knows what marriage can lead to. Not to forget that it is doomed from the star for many reasons. Not just because we are giant, but even as human woman we still would be the dominating side, richer one, also insanely more smarter then will get a noble title and become leader of the village (before or after the current one dies). Add all these to a traditional setting where women are supposed to be in kitchen and do what is asked from them ... You know, these things tend to kill the male in the relationship, I just fell sorry for Kel, he'll probably start drinking or something ( he can't abuse his wife for obvious reasons). Kel is a nice guy who handles crossbow excellently , but in the grand scale of things he's nothing special, I *might* understand if we tried to marry someone like Kamina ( as it is not gay to love Kamina) or other super GAR figures

I just think he wants a nice lady and the only one he's been around for a long time is us.

You assume that he'll be put off just because we'll be strong and independent? He's known us for almost as long as we've been here. You think his view of us will suddenly change?

You think this is a society where the woman stays "in the kitchen". This has been disproven several times, as the women help with the planting and harvesting. They might not do the most grueling of work, but they are far from helpless meek figures.

For some reason I think our second and third hand experience in the old life; like works of fiction (novels, D&D, movies, etc); real life events (political/celebrity scandals, etc); friends, relatives, people who we studied with; our educations and common sense and just about the stuff we read on the Internet accumulate MUCH more experience that a guy who's been a hunter in some backwoods poverty stricken medieval-level village for few decades (and maybe a soldier, I don't remember, was he a soldier?)

This could be also used as a good reason to break off engagement: First, we haven't had any real situations like these in real life, we are inexperienced and we acted accordingly, but after thinking it through we realize it is a mistake...

It seems likely that the townspeople would not want you to leave again so soon. Also, given travel distance, it would take a month to get to the garrison and back. As always, it's up to you.

The engagement is a point of severe contention. In the absence of a real agreement among you, I think the best course would be to slow things down considerably. You were not in the best state of mind, having just come back from the dead and all, so you weren't really in any position to become engaged. Time is the least of the things you need. Anyway, I think good solid reason is that some of long term players didn't want this to happen but couldn't affect the outcome as they were busy at the time the decision was made (seriously, did you see how short that thread was, usually we have 2-3 threads), it makes the experience unenjoyable for them and now might this great quest... I'd like to think that you, Sam, does not want this to happen.

But think about this: obviously there are a bunch of people who are uncomfortable with this and might quit altogether. Do you think that turning this into Waifu SimQuest would replace them with more good roleplayers? And would it make the quest much more fun for the rest, in the expense of others, or will it be "business as usual"?

Um, hate to break it to you, we haven't had Frost Giant quest expand into 2 threads in a single session in over a month. And I still see no reason why the hell they think that engagement/marriage/romance would ruin the quest. What about it would make the quest less enjoyable? As for "long term players", the hell are you talking about? There were 2-3 anonymous who were against it, you have no idea if they're long-timers or not.

And do you really think that just because of this one thing it'll turn into Waifu quest? Because that's the most ridiculous thing I've heard so far. The quest will be the same as normal, we'll probably get a couple of posts about wedding or whatever, and we might be slightly more inclined to bring Kel with us on adventures, but other than that I don't foresee it being any different.

I'd say "because the plot demands it" is a good reason.

    >other than that some long-term players objected?

Yes, we did object. When a character you like dies without you being able to do anything about it, it hurts. I still see no connection between that and this.

Your post seems to insinuate that because we bitched about it, Nineteen died. Or am I misunderstanding you?

A good reason would be that if we REALLY wanted to fuck a guy so much we would have come back as a human female. If we wanted to start a family and have children we could have also come back as human male, find a woman, raise kids and grow old.

But we didn't, because we didn't want to do that, it has never been an intention for us. And really how can you justify that, as a young male from modern world we would want to marry (without even dating) other guy, settle down and be bound by marriage? What, you want to tell me we gave up GODHOOD for that?
We took the form of Frost Giantess because we associated it with this world, we were used to it and we earned respect and a noble title with our death with it. We could justify going female again because it would be weird otherwise, not because we like to piss sitting.

Our ice magic is obviously not going to cut it against the ice demon, after all, and fire magic is right out for us, but alchemy should be okay, so let's at least try to make some sort of device that can werf flammen.

I wanted to come back as a Frost Giantess because we'd need to be a frost giant to deal with other frost giants and have decent resistance against ice magic, ice demons, ice elementals, and the simple environmental cold of the north when we inevitably take care of the demon we unleashed, and being a male frost giant would have made things waaaaay more awkward when dealing with the humans and non-giant races--they're less likely to feel threatened by someone they see as a giant hot chick than a giant bearded Viking warrior mage with super powers, and people react badly to feeling threatened, that's just the way things are.

(Plus that one Frost Giantess on half-elf sorceress fapfic from a million years ago or so was pretty hot.)

Having sex with men was not on my agenda, but I guess I can deal with it as long as we get around to either adventuring or building a technologically-driven communist utopia, pic related.

Things have gone extremely well, putting aside your horrible luck in combat. Ceril has gone above and beyond your expectations in trying to accommodate you, and the soldiers of the garrison never gave you any trouble, despite your size, blueness, and amazing powers. That's something to respect, and you plan to honor that respect with a banquet.

From some of the looks you've gotten after proposing this, you'd think no one had ever even thought about it, much less said it out loud. But you're Maya, and that's what you do. The twins were on board immediately, but they were never the most... traditional people. A message was sent to Ceril, embellished with everything they could come up with to make this seem like the most wonderful idea ever. A good start, if you've ever seen one.

Jerith came home a little bit ago, riding a mule with a covered cart behind it. His cargo was nearly everything he has ever owned, including magical items, books, the kind of robes most mages seem to wear, and a wooden ring, inscribed with a frost rune. After hearing of your... losses, he had it commissioned from one of his acquaintances, to replace the one destroyed by the mantle. Of course, he didn't know about the other ring you received, so there was something of an awkward moment when he gave it to you. Another thing to laugh about later, you suppose.

Your new chestplate is complete, as are repairs to the rest of your armor. Dreman has started on the crossbow, but it won't be ready for a while. He wants some time to 'improve the design', a phrase which was followed by a smirk and a hearty laugh. Bem returned from Fain with another crate of potions, which Jerith set to work combining, as well as even more books, and some rusted scrap he conned (his words) out of one of the blacksmiths. During all of this, you have been pulling things together, ironing out some details with Vasian, talking about further expansion and immigration with the elders, and generally returning to form.

Kel has been less upbeat than usual lately, but respects your decision to take things at a gradual pace. He's a good guy, but spending the rest of his life with you? Not necessarily a good idea. Especially since you've got a good century and a half after he gets to see the gods directly. Still, it's only been a year and a half since you arrived in the first place. There's no reason to jump directly into marriage, especially since you haven't had any romantic relationships of any kind on this planet.

Ceril's response was received while you were on your way. Thankfully, it was positive, though there was a part where she lamented, tongue-in-cheek, having to deal with you constantly attempting to raise morale through ridiculous means. You entered the garrison at just past noon on one of the sunniest days you've seen, bringing everyone 'of note' except for Sahl, and trailing several wagons filled with food and vast quantities of alcohol. So far, the sergeants have managed to keep their men from using murder to decide who gets seconds.

We should prepare for the way BACK from the garrison as well.

Maybe have someone accompany us back with enough rank to vouch for us while heading through villages to Dreamwood so those with keen eyes and itchy bowstrings think first before sniping us.

Not so much "Hail the glorious hero!!" as "This big blue lady, she's one of ours".

I'm also guessing she'd get fucking pissed at being raped in the ass in prison, and would use that moment to rage.
Plus, look at the equipment she had. A sword, an axe, some badly-dented and damaged shinguards (indicating they've seen a lot of wear, like, combat wear), and AN ENTIRE SKIRT MADE OF THE SHIELDS OF HUMAN CHAMPIONS.
I'm guessing she knew how to fight and had a lifetime of combat experience, not to mention the ruthlessness to shove a thumb through a guy's eye when he has you by the throat, which I think would let her hold her own even in our body.

Ask those magic users in the garrison who are trusted for a good place for beginner magic users to start.

As in neophytes who may or may not have the power since our 'newer' Frost Giantess format didn't come with the pattern making aptitude.

Just don't let that knowledge get out, be canny about discussing it.

The local soldiers have plenty of stories to tell. A few of them have been all the way to the front, and are here on what amounts to 'medical leave'. They take great pleasure in telling you where they've gotten their scars, most of which are from burns. All but one of them has had the opportunity to stab a fire mage in the eye, which you find disconcerting. Marc himself has a story or two, despite being a support-oriented person. At one time, he was contracted to enchant a shield for some high-up, wealthy general, and heard later that he had done such good work that the shield actually reflected a large fireball back into enemy ranks, decimating them and giving the general's personal guard the perfect opportunity to stab everyone in the face. Fun stuff.

The party goes... well, considering this is a military base. Property damage is kept to a minimum, mostly by threats of bodily harm, and everyone has a good time. Even the surgeon, who hasn't had a really good day since the war exploded again a few decades back. There is food, for the first fifteen minutes or so, and there is drink, for about five minutes after that. And this is them showing 'restraint'. After the end of the incursions, you guess they deserve a little (or big) celebration. This is punctuated by a send-off to their fallen comrades, wherever they may be. Not everyone is as 'lucky' as you, apparently.

On your way out, you slip Ceril a note about the demon's projected path, and what lies at the end of it. Intelligence might like to know that the demon is leading an army of Frost Giants to a city with a wall holding the combined total of their civilization's knowledge at its height.

Marc gives you some advice, and a small, metallic object that belonged to his last apprentice. It's a study aid, or so he says, enchanted with various low-level effects. Having it on your person can make things a bit easier. Aside from that, the best way to learn is to do. Concentrate, and let the spell unfold.

Physically, you're in shape, but not like you were before. You won't be making any long runs in full armor for a while. Your reflexes, at least, are intact and as fast as ever, though your muscles lack the power you built up in your previous body.

You can sprint a bit faster, but your endurance is not what it was. You need a little training.

As odd as it may sound is there any sort of unarmed combat art or wrestling that is formally taught?

Knowing how to hip check someone our size would go a long way to non-fatal 'test of might' Frost Giant negotiations.

Also some idea of camouflaging our scent be it magical or otherwise. The blacksmith was able to scope us out EASILY find out where that technique could be learned.

Also inquire where paper is made. Would be cool to have a Maya sized scroll tube to jot stuff down on. Failing that might we learn some sort of dictation spell that does the writing for us in different sizes so that it may be added to Hretmar's libram back at Dreamwood?

Yes. There are various unarmed combat arts, one of which is incorporated into standard training. You got some minimal instruction while you were in the military, but the others (twins, Eron, elders) have had full instruction, and could certainly teach you, as long as you don't insist on sparring with them or something.

Search for camouflage added to list.

The village has a means of making paper, as well as you-sized writing implements and ink. A dictation spell shouldn't be beyond your grasp either.

Back to town you go. Sahl should have a handle on things, as usual. It takes about two weeks to make the trip back, during which you do most of the hunting for the group, running as much as possible. You fall asleep almost instantly every night after supper, entirely exhausted. By the time you make it back, you feel much closer to your former level of strength, and a bit faster than you used to be, at least unarmored.

With what time you had to spare, you tried getting back into magic, keeping that study aid with you. Since ice magic was always the easiest for you, you try that first, managing to cover a small rock with frost by the end of the trip. Not your best work by far, but now that you've got your foot in the door, all of that talent should come back any time now.

Sahl welcomes you back, asking if you had a good time, and if you're ready to get started on the next round of celebration.

Well let us hope the partying hasn't used up what surplus we had for trade and winter.

Given that the Ice Demon is about to get a hold of this world's Frost Giant stockpile of eldritch know-how the cold season may be a LOT worse before we can stop him.

Creature attraction/repulsion wards might come in handy like those that were used to corral the Trolls troubling that other village months ago.

As for what story to tell at the party might we go into Batman; The Animated Series? A masked avenger who corrals the demons of mankinds' souls made manifest without dealing the killing blow? Maybe not..

I don't have any ideas about the final party. I'd be OK with just the highlights. Let's get back to building science and getting back into shape.

Also, now that we're legit and not in the military, we should start exchanging letters with scholars in the capital on the subject of scientific principles...

Batman, Mask Of The Phantasm. That way it will go a little more chronologically sound. No idea how the sagas go in this world but most of Earth's had a Beginning that wasn't right in the middle of things.

Also pop in and 'invite' Hretmar to the proceedings by giving a Frost Giant sized offering of ale in the Library. Not spilling it all over the books mind you but a token of esteem for a fellow, albeit heavenly, giant scholar.

One thing that I think needs to be done is that we should ask Hretmar to contact his siblings so that they deal will the Ice Demon themselves, make him convince them that if not stopped prematurely it will become too dangerous. Say that he should focus on his siblings weaknesses/paranoia like if there are some gods who believe their power and life essence comes from their followers the Demon can could kill them by killing taking away their source. Or play one the fact that it's come to their turf being disrespectful and that taking away their influence.

Just make them deal with that demon

Your armor has been repaired, you've got a new stock of health potions, a new magic ring, a magic study aid, and more books to look at. Dreman is working on a new, better crossbow for you, and you have slowed things down with Kel.

Ceril is looking into establishing your town as a 'retirement destination' for old soldiers. Nice, quiet, out of the way, pretty much perfect. She also now knows about the demon's path, and will alert Intelligence, if they don't already know. You can cast again, but not very well yet. You've decided to focus heavily on alchemy this time around, and learn unarmed combat, just in case.

Cake can be done, but confetti is unknown here, and would serve no real purpose. There are already several Frost Giant-size booze barrels.

It is feasting time. Again. Not a complaint, as they say, just an observation. For tonight's epic story, you choose an old favorite. Batman, the Dark Knight of Gotham. Born into affluence and power, the young Bruce, heir to the noble family of Wayne, is returning with his parents from a theater show when they are accosted by a thief with a menacing magical weapon. Their lives are taken before his eyes, as is whatever innocence he once possessed. He resolves on that day, standing over the body of his mother and father, to rid his city of evil.

As the sole holder of the Wayne estate, he is 'adopted' by the high servant Alfred, who then becomes his guardian. Through years of silent, repressed despair, master Bruce trains himself, dedicating his life to the memory of his parents. He sharpens his mind as he hones his body, becoming strong in the arts of alchemy and science, turning the cavern beneath his mansion into a base for his own dark enterprise.

It is when Bruce is a young man, studying feverishly in Gotham's university, that he meets his greatest challenge. A young woman named Andrea, who soon becomes the love of his life. He very nearly gives up his life's pursuit for her, losing his resolve after being shown point-blank that the underworld's finest do not fear him. He becomes engaged to her, but she breaks it off unexpectedly, closing off all contact with him as she moves with her father to a far-away land. Bruce is heartbroken, but steels himself, relying on the strength of his convictions to see his vision through.

The Dark Knight comes into being, born of the pain of pointless loss. His mask is that of the bat, his armored suit enabling him to glide across the rooftops, ascend to the very tops of buildings in an instant, and cut down the alley-bound criminals with the weapons which never kill. In this guise, the Wayne heir assaults the underworld, being framed for the murders of several well-known crime bosses. During his crusade, he does battle with the Phantasm, a similar-suited vigilante who has no qualms about killing, and disappears in a puff of smoke whenever it looks like he's caught.

The Dark Knight closes in, running into the mad jester who calls himself Joker, and being rescued by none other than his old love Andrea, after a close call with the city guard. The story soon comes out; the very criminals Bruce has been framed for murdering had killed Andrea's father, and the Phantasm is revealed to be Andrea herself. The Joker, the last surviving member of the mob that ordered her father's murder, is attacked by the Phantasm, but proves himself more than a match for her. She disappears soon after the Dark Knight shows up, leaving him to battle the Joker after a heartfelt attempt to convince her to stop.

In the end, the Joker catches up with Andrea, and both vanish, leaving Bruce to barely escape an explosive trap with his life. He manages, with great difficulty, to return to the mansion, where Alfred patches him up. Believing Andrea to be dead, Bruce laments the loss of his only love, and re-dedicates himself to the defense of the city, casting aside the weakness of the heart to be born anew, as a terror to all that do wrong. The Bat of Wayne Manor, Gotham's hero of the night.

The next story post will be the last tonight. Anything you want to add to magic practice, exercise, and Hretmar trying to get his siblings to see the demon as an actual threat?

For the moment, everything seems to be under wraps. Thankfully, things with Kel are a lot less awkward than you thought they would be. This situation is not the best, but it's all you can do right now.

Hretmar, at your request, has been trying to get through to his brethren, but few of them are inclined to listen. The tribes that the demon has managed to bring under its control are but a few among many, mere thousands out of hundreds of thousands. At least the threat of it gaining the knowledge from the wall seems to sway them. Though it is substantially more powerful than Hretmar, the Frost Giant gods are strong enough to do whatever they want to it. It is only through indifference, or perhaps amusement, that they allow it to continue on its way. Hopefully, they will see the light before the wall beneath Karok becomes their undoing.

As far as training goes, it's like your first months here, at least magic-wise. Lark and Jerith have a staggering amount of artifacts, some mundane and some decidedly not, and you have been making good use of them. In ice, you have used your ring well, regaining the ability to fire beams of ice, summon small ice blocks, and surround yourself with an aura of cold. Grenades are a bit tricky yet, but you'll get it. Your other major area of study has been alchemy, but you hadn't gone nearly as far in it before your 'death', so you don't have a large advantage. It is slow going, but the gains you make will be worth the effort in the future.

At least your body is responding well. Taking laps around the town in full armor is as helpful as it used to be. In no time, you have built up your physical endurance to near-previous levels, and increased your strength to a tier you deem 'passable'. You didn't think this would be all that easy, but it has proved to be less strenuous than you thought. Then again, you have Jerith to fix you up and you've been through all the motions before. You seem to bruise a little easier than you used to, but as long as your left arm doesn't drop off in the middle of a sprint, you won't worry too much about it.

About three weeks. Your crossbow will be ready next session.

As always, thank you for participating. I did not expect the marriage issue to stir up so much conflict, but I suppose I'll live and learn.

    Attached pic is my reaction.

I will see you later, Sam. We're 35 threads in, shooting for a science utopia. Here's hoping we make it. In epilogue, if nothing else.

See you later SubProc. I hope we make it too. If we don't.... well, there'll always be Sandcastle Quest.

I thought it was obvious what was brewing on the relationship angle. The only thing you could have done was explicitly poll people on the implications. A lot of people are saying the saw it coming but thought they didn't have to address the issue. That left the others thinking it was just a couple people against.

"Yeah, I know he's giving us and engagement ring, but I don't think it means anything. What do you mean we accepted and are engaged?"

I just don't understand those people.

Also, at the start of next session (in case I'm not there) let's start correspondence with the scholars of the kingdom about science. Just because we're in dreamwood doesn't mean we can't help everybody.
