Suddenly, an L5R thread! Share your stories of honor and glory! I shall begin.

I decided, in my last L5R game, to play a Mantis-clan Yoritomo Bushi, by the name of Yoritomo Shinji (from a joke during character generation when a friend called the Mantis cowards, and someone did the "I mustn't run away" thing, he did not actually have the Cowardice disadvantage). I wasn't really concerned with being great at combat, because Yoritomo Bushi is a pretty mid-tier School as far as I know, and because I wanted to take a lot of High and Merchant skills, to represent my swelling commercial empire.

Basically, I played as a Kama-wielding piratical scourge with an eye for treasure and a slight disregard for my own personal wellbeing. Many of our earlier adventures involved rooting out a Bloodspeaker sect, and we'd settled into using our influence (well, a ragtag group of samurai who had originally come together due to suspicious cult-related circumstances) to get very, very rich.

It was about this time that I wanted to purchase something, I forget what, probably a few more ranks in Peasant Weapons, Kenjutsu, or Heavy Weapons (I had an Ono as backup, that had turned out to be stupidly useful several times in the past). Since I didn't have enough exp, and we were well away from my home and modest estates, I thought buying Bitter Betrothal would be a fine choice. After all, what harm can a waifu do if she's all the way on the Mantis Islands? A lot, but fuck it, HEROES TAKE RISKS! So, I asked the GM if I could purchase it, and he agreed. I should have noticed the strange glee he took in the idea, and the fact that he mentioned it would bring in an NPC he'd planned earlier than expected.

Her name was Doji Sumire, and in-character my family had thought they were rewarding my efforts by finding me a prestigious Crane Clan wife.

Next time, perhaps they would have checked to find out WHY the Doji were so eager to get rid of a high-blooded female of good breeding, enough to marry her off to a podunk Mantis whose main asset was a fair amount of money, and whose social graces were the equivalent of "The Sea Hawks" on an extended loop.

I'll try to describe Sumire as best I can. You know the Black Sheep Disadvantage? She'd probably be the best example of it you can find. Had a scar from dueling across her face, cursed incessantly, drank a lot, and was nearly six feet tall...which is pretty huge in Rokugan. The first time I saw her, I just assumed the GM had married me off to a lesbian, and resolved to keep her away from my sister, mother, and any of the women I had an interest in. Not that she was butch, but she was about as far from a typical Doji girl as you could get.

Time passes, I leave strict instructions on exactly how much of my money she has access to, and basically hightail it out of there for the mainland. In the process, I manage to offend another Samurai...in a fairly minor way, I thought, just told a few creative untruths and stole a few of his trade contracts. Not a big deal.

A few weeks pass, I've completely forgotten his name, until I get an outraged letter from him, calling me a liar, a thief, and a coward. Specifically, a liar, a thief, and a coward who was hiding from him and needed my wife to fight for me. The letter mentioned that, apparently, he'd gone to my home to seek me out and demand reparations, and had been rudely rejected, to the point of having a chamberpot dumped on him.

Worried that this might snowball, I head home as quickly as possible...only to receive a letter from my apparent rival's family, outraged at the fact that their son had been killed in an illegal duel on my lands.

It turns out, this is what had happened. My new wife had insulted and derided him when he visited my home, laughed in his face, and dumped a chamberpot on him before driving him out of the house with a broom. He'd demanded a duel against me as a result of her behavior, thinking that (since I didn't have a reputation as a duelist) I'd buy him off and settle this like a merchant, SHE accepted, and promptly slaughtered him in the strike phase. I may have been wrong about her having the Black Sheep Disadvantage, because she'd definitely gotten a Kakita-style education.

Needless to say, I was delighted despite the Honor hit.

Realizing that it might be a bad, very bad, idea to leave her at home, I collect her and take her with me to the mainland. This, again, proved to have unforeseen side effects. Namely, she had a dueling addiction that skipped merrily past the border of "bloodlust" into "how-the-hell-are-you-a-Crane?" territory. Also, apparently she wasn't a lesbian, because she took a keen, overprotective interest in my affairs and would go out of her way to bully, threaten, and insult anyone she saw as one of my enemies.

    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)09:22 No.8874433
    >>8874414

    Yes, there is more.

Several good yojimbo and a fair number of people who actually accepted instead of sending a bodyguard (thinking that beating up my wife might humiliate me) died, before she finally ended up backhanding a Scorpion Courtier who was trying to blackmail me...using the woman's own fan...with enough force to knock her down.

Needless to say, the results weren't pretty, and took the form that all Scorpion seem to use as a polite refutation to insults. Namely, assassins. Apparently, this particular courtier was furious (when was the last time in YOUR game someone actually punched a Bayushi?) enough to just send a bunch of people disguised as brigands to chop me and my wife up, and dump the bodies.

She'd gotten drunk early that evening, so I'd put her in a separate room...after all, she snored like a bull elephant, and I needed my sleep if I wanted to go gamble intelligently in the morning. The evening passed uneventfully, and I eventually fell asleep.

The GM is rolling several sets of dice, and writing things down.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)09:26 No.8874450
I once played a Shiba Bushi who insisted on being far too friendly with the Hida Bushi in the group. I demanded we split hookers and booze, and void dumped on my raw Earth rolls to drink him under the table, and proceeded to spend the time with the hookers having a tea ceremony to recover all my Void. He hated me soooooo much.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)09:27 No.8874459
    >>8874433

The GM slips me a note, telling me what to roll...apparently, since I was successful, I wake up to the sound of someone drowning in their own blood outside my door, and a man with a katana coming through my window. Several brutal applications of Voice of the Storm (I had high Strength, and I think the GM honestly kept forgetting I was a Bushi) and I managed to hack him into little bits with my kamas, get my armor on...and get to the door.

It turned out, the assassin who had gotten through had been the last one, and had decided to go AROUND, taking the slippery roof, rather than get close to the slumped figure in torn blue silk slumped against my door with a grin on her face.

Whoops, forgot a picture twice in a row.

I freak out, since she's covered in wounds, bleeding heavily, and because she's surrounded by a lot of chopped-up assassin bits, still holding her katana, and stinking of blood and sake.

I pause the game, announce that I'm not letting her die, slap our Shugenja awake, demand he heal her, and promptly buy the Allies merit for Sumire, announcing my willingness to buy off Bitter Betrothal on the spot if it means she can survive.

She came out of it with a few more scars, but at least she's still grinning, drinking, and fighting...and we might have kids someday. All I know is that I'm not letting her sleep in a separate room anymore, even if she does snore.

The Time of Obsidian Based upon the Adventures of Living Rokugan by (insert name)

Bayushi Suzahara was laughing within his own mind at the memory of the events that had changed not only his clan but stricken his entire life to ashes, those mad few months in which his entire world was turned upside down and given in his own humble opinion a rather unpleasant shake.

A muffled groan beneath him accompanying a slight struggle turned his attention away from the unpleasantness clouding his mind, only to remind him of what he had to do now.

With a heavy heart Bayushi Suzhara drew his blade Chidori from its saya and brought the blade upwards causing more cries of mercy from the young peasant girl who looked upon his ancestral weapon with nothing less then pure fear.

Suzahara spoke softly to young peasant girl beneath his foot as a father would to his favored daughter, yet his words held no comfort. “You who have allowed the taint of the darkness to claim your soul accept redemption so that you may pass on to your blessed rest and one day be reborn…forgive me.”

His blade knew not of the mercy the young girl screamed for as it cleaved through thin air cleaning cutting into the throat of the young maiden and cleansing the land of her foul blood, spilling her life essence upon the floor with a faint hiss as her thick ichor-like fluids joined the black river that flowed along the earthen ground of the village.

The darkness had been purged here…beneath the light of the full moon.

“MOVE, MOVE, MOVE DON’T LET THEM HAVE HER. COME GET ME YOU CRANE BASTARDS…” The clash of steel on flesh followed closely after, the skirmish was desperate and brief but could only have had one possible outcome.

    “AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH…”

The scream of his friend Kadaka dishonoured by clever plots, the exiled Seppun had wondered the lands of Rokugan as a Ronin willing to lay down his life for the very Empire that betrayed him regardless of the costs …the huge bear of a man had fallen to a thousand corrupted blades to prevent the enemy from capturing his friends whilst they spirited away cargo from the corrupted fortress, a pure young woman heavy with child.

No more would he hear his large friends jolly belly laugh…no longer would the father he never had watch over him, guide him, listen to him, argue with him, drink sake with him or invite him to have fun at the local geisha house…never more…

The last words of Doji Yoshida’s as her hand tried in vain to touch his face tenderly were ones that had surprised even the stoic Scorpion, the words would remain forever in his mind as he watched her beautiful blue eyes slowly falling back into her head as she breathed her last, the vicious and tainted mongrel bites covered her entire body from head to toe finally claiming her…and yet still she did not scream in pain even unto death…

She had been a mistress of lies, courting with danger at every turn both in the courts of the empire and in its vast wilderness smiling like a fortune despite the dangers, yet after the events in her homeland she had changed trying her best to cleanse the sins upon her families honor slaying the false crane that had dared taint the noble soul of her house…yet now she was dead within his arms…her life force crushed defending his life.

I have to leave for class in a bit, if the thread is still alive when I come back, sure I'll share some more.

Our Phoenix Shugenja was a rather meek Water Shuggie (although since Water uses your Strength, he had surprising physical attributes when called upon...so we'd often joke about his "nerd rage" and "tiny fists of fury"). She took it upon herself to personally man him up, which mostly consisted of yelling drunkenly at him, and once buying a pair of large, hungry dogs, dipping the hem of his kimono in meat sauce when he wasn't looking, and letting them chase him around (he had a phobia of dogs).

In my groups L5R game, my first character was a Shosuro Shinobi masquerading as a member of the Ox Clan, and a secret member of the Kolat. I took Forsaken at creation, with the idea that years without the voices of his ancestors had made him bitter, and so he turned his back on everything spiritual, deciding that a man's personal abilities and power were greater than even the Kami themselves, hence Kolat membership.

Well, my GM wouldn't let me take Kolat Lore at creation, saying that I was just an expendable agent. This was all well and good until my lack of Kolat Lore prevented me from reading a message that my handler had sent, which eventually resulted in my being captured by Emerald Magistrates.

Blood…blood it was everywhere covering her face, seeping from hole struck in her armor caused by that creatures corrupted tetsubo, spewing from within her mouth with each breath, wetting his own armor and clothing with each pant for breath she took…and then staining the floor of the dojo beneath her when Suzahara finally placed her fragile body upon it.

“UMIKO SAMA…UMIKO SAMA…WAKEUP, OPEN YOUR EYES.” He cried to over her form as Suzhara felt his companions body grow cold beneath his hands, tears welling up in his eyes with each labored breath his friend took. “THIS WAS NOT MEANT TO HAPPEN, WE ARE THE FIVE BLADES OF THE JADE FIST, THE FIVE BLADES OF DESTINY…HOW…WHY COULD THIS HAPPEN???”

A wet sensation upon his lips struck the young man silent…as he open his eyes a smiling battered face looked upon him as Umiko’s fingers stopped her friend from dishonoring himself even more.

“Hush Suzahara dono, that look does you no honor.” A slight laugh from the woman bringing a new wave of blood to her lips along with an accompanying wince “Aya…I should not do such.”

“Umiko, rest…please…we’ll get you to a healer…please wait some more.” Suzahara looked over his shoulders at the assembled remnants of the crab rebels forces. “GET HER A HEALER QUICKLY.”

The crab, knowing the futility of the situation for they could not count a healer amongst their numbers, honored the scorpion and the dragon that had fought so hard by their side by not speaking, nodding and sending one of their numbers to ‘call’ for a shugenja.

“Suzahara-dono…waste not my time…nor the energy of our friends…with such a task,” Her breathing more labored now then it had been before she put more effort into telling her last remaining friend a lesson. “Suzahara dono…Yosha chan, Kadaka sama, Sanosuke dono and Nanami chan…we are all parts of your destiny…that is why…that is why we could all die…knowing that we would live in our friends forever more.”

Suzahara could not hold back the tears any longer, as one his eyes watered and voice sobbed even as Umiko looked upon him as a mother would upon her child her blooded hand cupping his tender cheek within its wetness.

“Do you know…why…” Her voice growing distant with each word she strove to speak in those final moments “…we entrusted our destiny to you?”

Suzahara shook his head, his eyes looking blankly down at his companion, the one that had been the wisest, the one that everyone had turned to when they questioned themselves or each other…she had been the Oka sama to all of the Jade Fist.

“Because my little scorpion…” Umiko’s eyes closed forever more to the world as she spoke with her life’s breath her final words. “…you know…how to…swim.”

“My lord…that was…amazing…I am at a loss for words,” A familiar, warm and feminine voice spoke seductively from right next to Suzahara’s ear, “I knew that for many days whilst you were away upon your journeys I had not performed my duties as your wife…but I was not expecting this…from you…not that I did not enjoy such a thing my Lord.”

Information saturated his mind all at once, he was in his futon, covered head to toe in sweat, his wife would he was moments ago looking at sleeping was now pressed against his form likewise covered in the scent of passion, purring in delight, over to one side of the room neatly placed away was his evening kimono, his wife’s however was in tatters all over his room looking like a wild beast had torn it to shreds…his room looked as if a typhoon had struck it…and by the kami why was his wife smiling so?

Lost in shock with no recollection of what had just happened, Suzahara looked about the room with eyes looking as if they had just been opened, leaning upon his right side to get a better view of the carnage yet was stricken by a barrage of sharp pains pierced his mind, falling back down with a gasp into his futon he was caught in Keiko’s arms lovingly.

“My lord…please after exerting yourself that much you must not move…you have pleased me enough for one many moons to come…” A simple…yet strangely erotic kiss was placed upon his cheek by the warmth of his beloved’s lips. “…Let us rest in each others company for now and enjoy the memory we just created.”

Suzhara however could not sleep, he sworn the full moon had just smiled at him.

He was the only one now his young lord had left to count on, his last true friend and ally in those times…all others were gone now...unknown to his lord brought low by his own blade…they had been corrupted…ever last one of them tainted by the ‘foul’ as the Naga called it.

He had explained EVERYTHING to his lord, how his mother had been Shosuro corrupted by the Lying Darkness, how by right of bloodline she had been his mother, the corruption of the lords of the clan, the connection between Kachiko and Shosuro and the events that occurred beneath his home. He had then offered to commit seppuku to repay his young lord for not having spoken the entire truth sooner, having feared Shusuro would have ended his life had he come to know the horrifying truth.

“Daijobu Suzahara-kun, my dearest friend, I know you have never told me a lie since we became friends, I also know that you amongst everything prize loyalty to me, why had it not been for you…for the loss of your arm I would have been slay by that abomination that had taken my father’s face.”

The young Daimyo surprised Suzahara then, he got up off of the black throne of the Scorpion and walking over to his friend promptly sat down only feet away from him, for a moment Suzahara looked stunned at his friend.

“Do not give me that look Suzahara we are friends are we not?” Dairu smiled at the confused face of his companion. “Why would I let you die for such a thing…I would lose my only friend and the only ally I can trust within this world…no…you will not be allowed seppukku, you are after all…still useful to me.”

“For all the pain it has caused us, you, me…the entire scorpion clan…nah the empire…I want you to kill it…” Dairu’s eyes burned in righteous anger as he issued his only command to Suzahara his fists slamming into the floor at his side denting to polished floors. “KILL THIS THING YOU CALL THE LYING DARKNESS…AVENGE OUR FAMILY.”

“HAI O-DAIRU DONO” Suzahara shouted in affirmative to his daimyo, he had a mission…once again…he thought smiling to himself…he would have purpose...once more the Darkness would know fear.

So, I did what any self-respecting Scorpion would do, and sold out my secret conspiracy. This happened shortly before the Scorpion sacked the Kolat Hidden Temple in canon, so in our Rokugan, my character provided the intelligence necessary for the Clan to locate and destroy the Temple. Of course, it was necessary to fake my death to keep my former compatriots off my trail.

Sorry...if it isnt any good, but those events and those that led up to them were rped by myself and gmed by the head of the l5r living game.

The Jade fist were my Roleplaying group and the games were written by Rob Hobart...in the ending days of the campaign things got vicious...one by one the group died off...the Obsidian Hand started driving my character insane, it was fairly dramatic and sometimes traumatic.

But I enjoyed it enough to attempt a story about it, sorry if it doesnt make much sense...I kinda wrote it from the point of view of the character and it was late in the campaign.

Still I hope you all enjoyed it, it is not every day I have the courage to show people my fiction.

Six months of real world time later, I'm playing the same character again in his new position as an Emerald Magistrate with a reputation of hatred towards conspiracies against the throne.

So far I've managed to talk the first born sibling of our group's Crane into Seppuku, making our Courtier into the next in line for control of his family's lands, get our Tsuruchi promoted to the front of a unit of troops, and execute a former Kolat Master for murder following my Yoriki intentionally getting himself killed in a first blood duel.

All without anyone else in the party having any idea that it's the same character.

Best time I ever had, creating a character after understanding the socially flawed empire the emperor let fall to shit after 1000 years. Went up to the emperor (8 ranks in social position) and pimp slapped him saying he was a complete idiot for letting shit happen, that I was willing to die to tell him that and that I had numerous reforms in my room waiting for him to take credit for.

For my crime I spent the rest of my life in the roomest prison cell in the forbidden city...but I was told before I died that the emperor (now much older) had enacted every last reform.

I played a Monkey, once. We were a small group in a pretty low-power game, roaming around and fighting injustice. We didn't accomplish much in the grand scheme of things, no massive battles, no metaplot effect...like OP, what we did mattered mostly to ourselves and our Clans.

One Ronin Duelist, one Toku Bushi, one wandering Ikoma storyteller, one Soshi Air Shugenja who was like a big brother to me. Together, we killed necromancers, brigands, Tainted Monks, corrupt samurai, and other evil men. It was all I could ask for.

So basically, it was designed for metagaming your political view into the L5R universe.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)10:54 No.8875235

A character is a character for roleplaying no matter what role or position you take, by your words a person would have no options to roleplay ANYTHING, you drink but your character doesn't? How is it that your courtier knows anything about politics when you do not? Hey guess what do you know how to swing a sword ic but not ooc...sorry you cant talk kenjutsu then.

Another example could be gaijin knowledge...well no clan but the mantis or the unicorn can have that right? WRONG, I played a Dragon monk with several gaijin allies but HUSH HUSH I cant do that due to METAGAMING can I?

I just played a character to feed a change to a story line so that it did not follow the same path over and over...plus slapping the emperor felt good.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)10:56 No.8875255
    >>8875235
    Different.

You used your OOC knowledge and your OOC opinion that it was a stale, cruddy political system, based your character around that and used your character to change the system. That was the only purpose of the character.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)11:00 No.8875292
    >>8875255

Alright I will correct my opinion then and apologies for my prior statement, but in all honesty I do feel sorry for the social outcasts of the game, was it truly wrong for me to create a Softhearted and Meek character whose shining moment in the game was to tell the sun of the heavens exactly what he was doing wrong?

An example of metagaming could be a player joining a game mid way through to purposely do a single task, or to kill off a specific PC thats pissed him/her off.

I did no such thing, caused no harm to anyone but my own character and had a good time roleplaying someone trying to overcome his own fear and awe of an idol and tell the truth.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)11:03 No.8875317
    >>8875292
Metagaming is using OOC knowledge to do something or acting on an OOC opinion to do something.

If you made a character that shared your OOC personality and had the skills to do what you couldn't with its personality, then you essentially made a self-insert.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)11:04 No.8875331

    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)11:07 No.8875366
    >>8875331
No, but you shouldn't play characters whose beliefs are founded on yours.

The "lol if you don't support one extreme you support the opposite extreme" argument that you are using is flawed.

I might as well say if you're not a fundamentalist Muslim then you're a militant antitheist.

Thank you for saying the words I was about to say.

    >>8875317
Show me a player that has role played without ANY personal input into their characters and I will grant you a medal. People cannot always play something they are not familiar with in fact many of us find familiar things refreshing in a game or sometimes they jump on a limb and play something outrageous...but even that takes what they know and just reverses it.

Roleplay = Uses skills, memories, pain, heart ache, triumph and glory along with the opinions you posses and either altering them to suit the character or basing the character upon them.

Either way...we cannot escape Metagaming, it is how we use it to improve or detract from the game that helps or hinders, I chose maybe selfishly to play a character that wanted to make a change...I did, nobody in the rp group suffered.

So what did I do wrong?

HEY GUYS I THOUGHT THIS THREAD WAS ABOUT BADASS L5R STORIES.

Granted, my own actual play experience with L5R is very limited. Just a one shot run through Night of a Thousand Screams using 3ed.

Notable were a super srs shota akodo bushi, his crab bushi uncle, and the uncle's buddies, a retired unicorn monk and a hida berserker. Also there was tamori shugeja who was married to someone but I forget who.

They spent most of the adventure drinking and laughing. And punching things that were getting in the way of drinking and laughing. The Monk was good at punching extra hard.

You didn't try to avoid it. You embraced it.

You founded all of your character's beliefs on your own beliefs, except you improved it so that it would be able to adeptly make the point that YOU want to make.

You basically created a self-insert to change the L5R world into what YOU want it to be like.

Let me tell you the tale of a man, a man named Ikoma Ieyasu.

Ieyasu was a lazy braggart who spent most of his time playing the sanxian and singing dirty songs to girls. None of us took him seriously. We had a pretty top-tier Bayushi Courtier already, so we didn't really need his help on social tasks...we never asked, he never offered. He carried a katana to impress girls, although he somehow avoided getting into duels.

Until, one time, we got into a fairly pitched battle against the forces of a traitorous, tainted lord out in some boondock province. Ieyasu put away his sanxian, sighed as he readied his katana...and oneshotted a hideous, tainted monstrosity in a single hit, before berserking and smearing a bunch of undead samurai across the landscape.

Told a guy that threatened to roast him that "If you wanna explain to the bossman why the whole joint is on fire, be my guest."

Later he was dragged down the stairs going "ow" as his head hit every single step, this is while hungover and waking up in a pile of discarded liquor.

Then we left the city and got attacked by Brigands, to which he drunkenly blundered into the tall grass and basically spammed stealth all over the place. He was fun to roleplay, but the session and campaign just didn't last long enough for me to have any fun with him.

No, It was a dude named Tommy.
He had a dude steal our stuff after knocking us out and when we woke up we told him we look around the whole area for our stuff. He says can't find it anywhere. After walking 2+ days to the nearest town where we meet this guy again and finally bribe him to tell us where our stuff is he merely says to look up. It was in the tree that we were knocked out under.

Made both of us players rage.
