At the end of last thread you had slain a dragon, and were about to work out what to do with the corpse.

    >Flashback
    >Consecutive crits. MAXIMUM WIN ENGAGED.

    >The dragon lunges at you, and you nod to Doobs, who knows just what to do. He runs in, slashing at it's flank and as it turns to snap at him you leap forth, stark at your side. Stark bites at its claw, sinking his teeth into the softer smoother scales in the palm as you land on the dragons head spearing Thorn down thourgh its good eye and deep into its brain. pushing thorn deeper and deeper until until the hilt has sunk into its soft gooey eye, you hold on for dear life as it spasms. After moments it drops to the floor, its spasms weakened and the beast vanquished. Wiping a blade off on cloth nearby you thanky Byron for the chance to finihs wooing he girl of your dreams. You tuen back to see clint, having brought Cohen and Leold down, standing shocked and in awe. Cohen breaks the silence "You said it was serious Clint, looks like our Lord Green had it all under control. The Doobs blood flows strong in you, and the rest of your blood is flowing strongly enough as well, surprisingly all on the inside."

You have Leold, Doobs, Shorty, Cohen, Clint, Aegon, 2 Men-at-Arms, and 2 Yeomen still alive. Dragon didn't kill anyone, but Doobs and Shorty are suffering corrosive burns to the face.

    FUCK YEAH LORD QUEST!

Hmm What to d owith the dragon's corpse. Well first thougth would treat it similarly like any game.

Cut off head make a trophy
Skin the scales tan them (or whatever you with them) andmake either rug or amor.
Bleed out the corpse gather the blood and presrve it for alchemical purposes and experiments.
    Cut off Claws make jewely

    Are these possible?

    >>9034073
Ok, Cohen can use The Bane (Ogre warsword, serrated on the back side, handy for fighting hill giants and stuff) to slice up the dragon. So you can cut him up how you like.

You can skin him, you'll need to get it back home to tan though. You have 1/3 of your water supplies used, so you have some water skins empty for blood. You can empty more. Also if you like you can empty some of zeek's salves to make more room. However, this means you won't have any salves left on the way home.

Lets keep all of Zeek's salves.

How heavy would the dragon's parts be? Between the 10 of us can we harvest/carry it and still fight or are some of us going to be on porter duty while the others are combatants.

Can we make a lore roll or something to tell if legend has it there is a particular part of a dragon that is extra important? Would Ageon know?

    >>9034170
You could carry the whole body between all of you, but it will seriously hamper progress. You'll roll d5s instead of d20s for progress home.

Taking the head back should be easy enough if you cut it off. It will hamper you to a d17, but mainly due to it's awkward shape and teeth/horns you want to avoid. They don't look safe. If you had something better then your bags to carry it in, then that might help.

Ok we clearly need more people for this. I suggest we send a messenger home with the news of glory and have them quickly build a sort of makeshift stretcher out of wood and ropes which is large enough to carry a dragon (or at least the head) without seriously hampering progress. Until then we stay and guard the corpse.

If that is possible notify all the craftsmen who deal with hunting, leatherworking, alchemy and so on to make preparations

He tells you that the Norse use the blood of the dragon in shaministic rituals, the teeth to make swords out of, and the bones to make huts from. The scales are used to make hut walls from, as huts made from dragonskin are tough and keep the warmth in. This dragon appears to be smaller however, and not large enough to live in.

    >>9034259
Whoever you send will have to go home and then come back again, guarding a bunch of peasants and craftsmen in a swamp which has claimed some of your trained soldiers. 2 men at arms and 2 manhunters so far to be precise.

I also second that we need to treat the wounded, although burns are a horrible type of wound.

Water skins are a poor way to store dragon blood I was thinking more in clay jars or something but I suppose this will have to do for now. I have no idea how quickly a dragon's corpse dissolves.

You quickly fill your empty water skins with the creatures blood, which is a dark red. It's slightly corrosive to the skin when you splash it, but doesn't seem to have any ill effect to the treated leather water skins. Although most of the blood is going into the earth, it's not like the creature had a shortage of it.

What you have is stuff you'd reasonably expect people to take going adventuring in a swamp to a temple, plus:

Hunting Lance, Shortsword, Fine leather armour
Bastard sword, chain mail, dwarfsteel dagger
    Icesteel (Longsword)
Old "short" bastasrd sword, buckler, studded armour

A second letter, dated 40 years ago states that the writer, a Dean Markson hopes that the young duke will reach this letter in good health, and that this document is the original Dukedom Grant, and the bearer of this scroll is given a title of Duke and the fief of Marensburg.

You try to climb up the rope, with your good arm, as your friends try and drag you up. However the rope is wearing thin on the cliff ledge, and one by one the threads are snapping. You hurry, shinnying up the rope, as best you can, trying to reach the top. As you get near, you grab for Doob's arm as he reaches for you. You grab his hand and try to lift yourself up, but the last few days have been taxing on you. You fall, the rope draws taught once more, then suddenly snaps loose. You think of a pretty girl and her love for alchemy, who will hear that you died fighting a dragon, saving your compatriots with your dying breath. You think of your lands, which will become part of your brothers estates, probably left to Smyatt and Erik to run. You think of your cousin Doobs, and the fame he'll gain as a dragonslayer. You think of his struggles with Sylem, but you are confident he can overcome them. And then with a loud wet thump, you won't think any more.

Thom Greene does not let a fatal fall stop him.

    No, he does not.

He'll stand up, and face the reaper, man to demideity, and stand firm. And when the reaper reaches for his hand, he will say, "No." And nothing will stop him from returning.

QL probably wants to stand firm - after all, whats the point of the quest if we can't lose? And if we had been killed fighting a dragon, then sure, I would be ok with that. That would have been sucked, but narratively, it would have been satisfying.

But dying from a slip on a ledge AFTER killing a goddamn dragon? Thats just lame. There is no closure there, no furfilling story. Thats just a bitch way to go.

Sure, you want to keep the quest real, with risks and rewards - but you've already been convinced by arguments for awesome things before QL. And its not like we're not suggesting awesome things. Imagine it: Lord, soon to be Duke, Green, fighting Death himself, a Dark Knight on a Pale Horse, while Doobs and Co drag his body before a Voodoo Troll priest to sacrafice the heart of a beast to bring him back.

And there will be consequences. Maybe we're a zombie, maybe it doesn't quite bring all of us back, or maybe too much? Maybe we see our ancestors, who impart more cryptic wisdom to us.

This story isn't over QL. Don't quit on us now.

    Awesome things:
Blackadder, this is a huge plus that guy deserves his own quest and to reach glory
Town building, I did not see how town building part went. That is a very complicated and delicate part but done right it can be awesome
NPC Characters, there are a lot of named characters with their own story and pesronality instead of just being a random NPC

    List of Awesome shit

    1. Elaborate but cohesive system for playing city. Different seasons, different crops, etc. etc. Best I've seen.
    2. Hidden reference. They made /tg/ wake up and pay attention.
    3. Random Treasure table tied to world plot items. Random but everything mattered.
    4. Little railroading. If /tg/ wanted to fuck around with buying rings in a shop or running after a priest of some random god, we did.
    5. Simple system that was mainly reduced down to one or two die rolls.

    Cons
    1. The traveling was a bit too long but I see why you were doing it.

    Long time player here.

I enjoyed the city building aspect of the game. It added an interesting aspect that very few other quests or games I've played do and provided an outlet for creativity and discussion. I also enjoyed some of the adventure aspects such as slaying the trolls and other fun combat. Then there was the humor aspect of the threads, sometimes it came from something you posted or other times it came from other participants.

I did not enjoy the slow pace of the building projects, it felt like things progressed very slowly. While it was more realistic it was not enjoyable to have to wait upwards of three months, which usually was an entire thread, to get something built. I also did not enjoy the standstills that sometimes took place, such as the bandit debate which at up an entire thread with bitching. You should in those situations when things get too out of hand with discussion to make it a first vote to a certain amount of posts supporting an opinion to reach three or five wins.

    Room for improvement

So it seemed to me that the setting was very similar to a European dark ages setting, which is cool. However no real element of the setting stands out as memorable.

Let me give you an example.

Dragon Age: Origins. Wardens - Darkspawn are memorable. The Templar - Lyrium - Mage - Apostate crux is memorable. Casteless Dwarves, Deep Roads, Refering to everything as 'Sand' or 'Stone' is memorable. Orlay occupation of Human lands are memorable. Elves not so much.

Anyway if you could work a little more pizazz or interesting moral shades of grey into the organizations or cultures that would be interesting.

This is the biggest lesson you need to learn. Unless you specifically set out to go for gritty realism/simulationism then having the main character (or any PC) die like a chump is bad. It's unsatisfying for all involved, even if it's fair and "realistic." This is especially true if it ends the game in an abrupt fashion.

Exactly. Take a look at First Quest. Yeah, the character died due to dice rolls.

But he also did what he set out to do. He killed the bad guys. Quite well, in fact. And after that, all that was left to do was die.
    >> Anonymous 04/07/10(Wed)09:16 No.9036343
    >>9036327
The thing about First Quest though is that it changed it's name to Deathwish Quest. I mean when you're character's defining trait is having a deathwish having him die in a dungeon, naked and alone, is pure bullshit.
    >> Anonymous 04/07/10(Wed)09:18 No.9036363
    >>9036308

Not necessarily the manner, but the whole circumstances. Falling to your death can be fine; failure shouldn't be hand-waved away. It's what differentiates an RPG from a pure story. To have the main character, and most likely the whole game die when navigating a thing ledge so you can get from A to B is something entirely different. It's not an unhappy ending where the hero does and the villain wins. It's a massive anticlimax.

Last thing I'd like to share before I get going is this. Just because everyone of us, myself included, did a bit of whining today shouldn't mean that you go easy on us if we're lucky enough to succeed this weekend. The threat of lethality of the adventure parts mixed with the pleasant safety of the citybuilding parts is good. It's something I hope stays. Also, hopefully we won't be too traumatized by this incident and start acting like total pussies from here on in.

QL, long time fan of the quest here, but this is pretty bullshit. As said before, you don't have someone kill a dragon to slip on a ledge and die; you have them get injured perhaps, but that sort of anti-climatic storytelling just leaves everyone involved pissed off.

Agreed. Injury to the point that he must stop the exploration of the caves and have the NPCs bring him back to the keep for recuperation, sure. Losing out on the sword's best shot at ancestral awakening, sure. A quick "oops, dead" just hurts. (ALTHOUGH FELLOW PLAYERS, THIS IS WHY WE HAVE NPCS FOR THAT CRAP). Definitely looking forward to meeting the Reaper.

I figure we have a few good methods on the physical realm to help us with coming back, besides being generally awesome when it comes time to tango with the Reaper.
    >the Norse use the blood of the dragon in shamanistic rituals
Well, nothing quite like bringing back the newly deceased with powerful material components for a shamanistic ritual.
    >Byron
He's our bro of a god, and bros don't let bros go out in a non-manly way. We do awesome things, which he likes, he might help us out a bit.
    >Sacrificing heart
That should get some god's attention, if not Byron's. We do have a priest, shaman, and bard available.
    >Sarah
Gets a dream, begins praying for us. Diceroller is a proven romanticist, after all.
    >Newly dead
    Well, we're only mostly dead.
    >Wyvernsting
A sword of legend might have some strong pull to ensure its wielder can come back to the living with the right conditions. At the very least, it might appear to us to use against the Reaper.
    >Ancestors
They won't let us die just yet if they can help it.

And QL, Lord Quest directly inspired me when I was preparing Terminator Quest (Iron Quest and Frost Giant Quest also contributed when I looked to see what /tg/ enjoys in its quests.)
