According to Legion Alpharius joined Horus because a TOTALLY TRUSTWORTHY secret xeno cabal told him that if Horus won he would feel remorseful, wipe out humanity, and destroy Chaos in the process. This is all very stupid and not exactly Dan Abnett's most stellar writing.

After ten thousand years of pretending to be Chaos-y at least some elements of the Alpha Legion are as standard-issue evil as any other traitors (hurr they have daemon princes), but I think it's reasonable to assume the primarch(s) still have their own preferably not xeno-cabal related agenda.

OP, it may or may not affect you, but I'm pretty sure by Horus Heresy story, Alpha Legion joined Chaos because a conclave of Xenos showed Alpharius that if Horus lost the heresy, the Imperium would fall into decay, and everything would be consumed by Chaos. But if He won, the power invested in him by the Chaos gods would lead to an empire that turned on itself quickly, obliterating itself, and with it, the Chaos Gods.
So, Alpha Legion chose to sacrifice itself to kill Chaos.
Then Horus lost anyway, and Alpharius was "slain". So they're stuck on a team they never wanted to join.

Me and my girlfriend are going half and half on a chaos army as I already play Necrons/Salamanders and she plays Orkz.

Well, the project is currently on the backburner, but I've got some good ideas, like this new special character, Alphor of the Alpha Legion, the Alpha Hydra. He wields the Hydra blade, and wears Hydra armor. He also has the new psychic power, Hydra Jaws of the Hydra. Also, his armor is covered in Hydra heads.

Everybody loves and respects him, and one time his army fought side by side with the necrons to eliminate a tyranid fleet, but then because he's Alpha Hydra of the Alpha Legion, he DOUBLECROSSED the necrons and reunited the splintered hive fleet and beat them up too, so then in his honor the tyranids made a new monster that is... a hydra.

Also, he's actually an ultramarine in disguise, because everyone knows that all marines loyal or chaos keep a picture of rowboat girlyman in their locker to jack off to while they cry when they hope nobody is looking.
