53 KB ADEPTUS QUEST II: ELECTOO BOOGALOO Captain AdMech guy 04/10/10(Sat)22:24 No.9114489
You are Lyra K. Feddel. You are a techpriestess designated for repairs in bases and on complex machinery. You've got very strange luck, but you're still alive and able to complete your mission.

Right now, you are armed with only a laspistol, two explosive devices, and a lucky Mechanius Charm, with a side-kick in the form of the servitor #alt.bin.boss, better known as Peg-Leg. He is currently carrying the rest of our stuff, and has a lasrifle on. You have a robe, but it's a little too big.

    Plot to date:

After waking up from hibersleep thanks to a malfunction, you have learned that the ship you're traveling on has crashed into a rock. Most-all of the crew is dead or missing; the only member you saw alive told you that there was an Imperial ship besides them docked to the rock. After his death, you took his pistol, rifle, and charm, and promised to make it to the Imperial ship in order to save the valuable passengers and much more valuable ship.

After scrounging up basic supplies, you and Peg-Leg entered the rock, which has turned out to be a laboratory base rock thing; 'Progressive Dynamics Research Lab'. Soon after entering the rock-base, you learned that there is both Ork and Astartes presence in the base. You're still not sure if the Astartes are Chaos-tainted or not, but they're fighting the Orks. After losing sight of the Astartes while hurrying to rejoin his battle-brothers, you learned through a Servitor (which attacked you!) that this base seems to be from Pre-Heresy times. Then Peg-Leg dismantled it because it tried to crush you.

    Now:

You have come to pause for a short rest in a small room that has doors leading all four cardinal directions. You came from the South. Going East leads to the Mess, and the Astartes and the Orks. Space Docks are to the North. The Labs are to the West.

oh hey i should check this thread-

    >W
There's nothing especially notable as you head down the hall. It is dim, but the lights are functioning. There are no servitors nearby, which is good; the last one nearly strangled you.

You come to a set of wide white doors. There is evidence of heavy locks and other safety/sealing mechanisms. The door is unlocked, so you enter.

Inside, it is dark. There are doors to the North, mounted by an aquila. There is another set of doors further West; there is no aquila on it.

There are tables in the center of the room, as well as counters running along each wall. There are papers on the tables; there is some evidence the people who were in this lab left in a hurry.

There are heavy containers on some of the tables. They have translucent parts, but it is too dark to see in them. To the SW part of the room is a similar container. There is a dataslate hooked up to this container; it is collecting information, you figure.

You take notice of warning signs and buttons that, presumably, activate security features in the room.

Presumably, you flip the lights on.

When you do, you discover why the scientists left in a hurry.

Arcane symbols have been burned onto the wall, ones that make your flesh-eye ache and your flesh feel weak. Even Peg-Leg is affected; he chirps out that there has been a sudden negative impact on his abilities. The markings cover the North wall, but are present on all the walls. The Aquila has been defiled.

You manage to approach the dataslate through steadying yourself on the counter and averting your eyes.

The container the dataslate is attached to emits a low whine when you grab the slate to look at.

The data on the 'slate boils down to it keeping track of 'generations of divisions' 'purity of genetics' and progress on something called 'DIVINITY'. Generations are extremely high, Purity is very low, and progress seems to be stagnant at 63.5%.

The room makes you feel ill by simply being inside it. You do not recognize the cult it belongs to.

    Okay, let's roll.
    >N
You head North, getting Peg-Leg to lead the way, as he does not seem to be as adversely affected by the runes (he does totter more than usual). You follow along, holding onto your bag of stuff on his back. The runes titter and taunt you in a language that makes your potential coils ping and quiver.

Through the door is a small room that seems to function as an antechamber. The only set of doors besides the one you entered through lead further to the North. Those doors are made of thick, heavy glass, reinforced with metal and ceramite; they are doors to what must be an Observation Deck.

There are more markings in the Deck, massive sigils and runes, on the ground and painted on the glass in what you hope is merely blood.

There is an Astartes- this one in Scout armor- in there as well. He is down on the floor and severely injured; his breathing is ragged and the fabric of his shirt is red with his blood. There are corpses of scientists in the observatory deck. They were cut down by what must be heavy arms fire... or whatever it is the Marine carried.

There is no overt evidence that there is anyone in the room. You can hear the marks in the lab snickering at your predicament (whatever that may be).

The Observation Deck has oxygen in it. There are no additional exits.

You enter the Observation Deck. You notice that you can spot both the Space Dock and your crashed ship from here. It is well-lit, and there continues to be no one in the room.

You approach the Astartes. He tries to turn his head to look at you, but pauses. YOu announce your approach:

'Honored Astartes,' you cant. 'I will not harm you!'

At the sound of your obviously vox-reproduced voice, he rolls onto his side, drawing his side-arm- some sort of bolt-pistol!

'Foul heretics!' he yells through the pain. 'I will cut you down just like the last ones! You will not have MY blood!'

It appears that it IS blood in the Observation Deck. What do you do now?

'I know less than you, sir! Allow my approach, so I can aid you.' You drop the laspistol (after apologizing for doing so), and carefully lift the lasrifle off of Peg-Leg, doing the same. 'See? Now we're unarmed.'

I have drunk too much and I regret it. I have done so much and too little and I regret it. I am ashamed of my deeds, and I shall never return to such deeds. Bless us all, and welcome me to thy table, oh Emperor.'

    >get his Chapter, for fuck's sake!

'Before I strike you down in the Omnis- in the /Emperor/'s name, what is your Chapter's name? So I can call it properly in my own Rites?'

He looks honestly surprised. 'Castellans. Imperial Castellans. You've never heard of us?'

You shake your head. 'I'm not from here.' You clear your throat diplomatically, 'And with that, I bid thee safe passage.'

He closes his eyes, and awaits the shot to end him.

You manage to heft his pistol and promptly hand it to Peg-Leg. You're not stupid; his arms being broken are much less serious than your own. You don't know how bad the kick is on the thing! You begin the long-form intonation of the Rite of Safe Transmission as you order Peg-Leg to use the pistol.

    >I could be cruel here and make you roll. But no!

BLAM. Peg-Leg is shaken badly by the shot, but he appears unharmed. The Marine, however, has passed.

The marks outside the door shriek for a few seconds of agony, then stop. The marks in the room shudder and pull away from the Marine's body.

What?!?! the fluff and the crunch disagreeing?!?! IMPOSSIBLE!

But in all seriousness, go look at the size of an Astartes Bolt pistol, It fires a .75 mm round. For comparison, heres a gun that fires .50mm rounds.
It cannot be fired by a person just holding the gun without a good chance of injury. Furthermore its said explicitly in the fluff that bolters are mostly solid metal to increase their durability. We are talking a 30-40 lb gun with enough recoil to break bones, I doubt our slip of a techpriest can wield it effectively

You retrace your steps. The lab is much quieter, and the marks on the walls seem to scowl and look ever-so-disappointed in you; they pull away from the holy boltpistol in Peg-Leg's hands. They still make you feel ill when you look at them, but less than before.

No, I'm well aware of what recoil is, but I don't think you understand how a bolt pistol works.

It fires a normal charge for a bullet that big. A hefty charge producing a LOT of recoil, but not big enough to say, punch through a tank. Which is why after a set number of yards the gyrojet kicks in and propels the round even faster, giving it its penetrative powers and allowing to defeat armor.
But it still starts life as a HUGE .75mm bullet, no diffrent than any other bullet.

So yeah, I understand recoil, but do you even know what you are arguing about?

You decide to get to the Astartes as soon as possible, no matter what. That Scout deserves better than what he got.

You check your armaments and order Peg-Leg to take point. He does so. You suspect you're getting better at this 'progress through enemy territory' thing!

You two travel down the hall, which widens as other, narrower hallways join it as it heads East. The mess is a popular location!

As you approach, you hear three things:

Orkish shouts, more Astartes bellowing out warcries, and the occasional hellish shriek of corrupted binary. Looks like the Scout was right.

About halfway down, a screech of scrapcode erupts from behind you!

A pair of servitors- cleaning purposed ones- and a group of cultists barrel out of one of the hallways, running full-tilt to the Mess. At the sight of you, they skid to a stop and take aim.

They continue to blurt dirty code, best translated: 'Another False! They must eliminate or be join! ELIMINATE OR JOIN, DEAD-END! THERE IS NO ESCAPE, TAKE TIME TO DECIPHER! LONG TIMES TO CLEANSE BAD BEHAVIOR'

    >>9119524
I'm well aware of how it works, its simple action and reaction, force is applied to push the bullet from the barrel, thus equal force is applied in the opposite direction. Diffrent things factor into this, like load, bullet size, length of barrel etc.

Now for another real life example. since you ignored the last one...

A .50mm smith and wesson revolver gives off about 66 ftlbs of recoil per shot.
    A .46mm s&w gives off only 45 ftlbs.
    a .44 gives off a mere 20 ftlbs.
The larger the bullet, the larger the recoil, but its not linear, its exponential. a .75mm bullet would produce about 300 ftlbs of recoil which would absolutely shread and ligaments that even tried to stop it. That gun would destroy your shoulder if you tried to fire it.

    ...DUCK UNDER RETURNING SHOTS!

You throw yourself to the side, underneath a few wild shots from some of the cultists, rolling around before pulling back up and letting the lasrifle offer praise to the Machine God in it's own special way.

You take quick advantage of the situation, barking out harsh command code: 'RETURN TO RESTING POSITIONS AND SHUTDOW- no, not you, Peg-leg!'

The servitors and cultists both chime out cheerful affirmatives. The servitors trundle off to their alcoves, forgetting the mess. The cultists start... but they have no resting position. They chime errors for a moment before attempting to return again.

This cycle continues to repeat itself.

Looking at them, you realize they are wearing robes similar to Adeptus Mechanicus members; plain white or red ones, some even with the distinctive white-black edging. They bear no skull-and-gear symbols, not even defaced ones. They are also extensively augmented. The augmentations seem to be cobbled together from anything they could find- one of the cultists has a elevatus's floor number light jammed in his eye socket.

They all have chaos marks on themselves somewhere on their clothes or bodies.

You easily order them into shut-down. Looking them over, there are two recurring theme in all the cultists: they all have obvious radial cranial alterations, and they all have messily-healed sutures on their bellies (as they, being cultists, lack shirts. It's a cult thing).

    >three is more than two. Let's move on after LOOTAN.

You pick a laspack from one of the cultists, and another's basic riotgear armor. It's just the right size, and helps a little with the robe. It has no chaos marks on it, thank the Omnissiah.

Other than that, nothing useful. You leave the cultists behind, who continue error-circling.

Peg-Leg is just an aide servitor; he has no KILLMURDER OMEGAMODE. That's for combat servitors, silly!

You get to the doors of the mess without further incident. The doors are blown open and long-gone, and on the other side of the room, a three-way KERNEL PANIC is going on between the Imperial Castellans- forced into the SE Corner where their boarding ship is forcibly wedged into the Eastern wall.

The Orks had burst in from the North, and fill in that whole area. Dakka is long-forgotten, Choppy taking the forefront in such close quarters. They are covered in blue markings. The last 'faction', the cultists, seem to pour in from everywhere else; the ceiling, the walls, any door you can see. They are easily mowed down by the Orks and Astartes, but more and of them pour in.

The cultists all yell code; the Astartes yell in High Gothic, and the Orks just /yell/.

They haven't put together that you being by the panel is suspicious as all get out. Taking them out is easier than replacing a laspack. You thank the Omnissiah for keeping you out of most of this KERNEL PANI-

    The sprinklers stop.

There is a high-pitched whine over the PA, followed by a massive burst of scrapcode, loud enough to make your dampeners kick in and overload. The marines flinch, the orks roar back at the blasted thing, and the cultists sing back praise to the awful sound.

'My ship wrecked. I- Lyra- am part of a Machine Cult's travel ship, that is all. There are many of us still in hibersleep; I was told to find the Imperial ship here- you, I think.'

The marine stands then, offering you a hand (the powerfist one) while simultaneously shooting into the melee, neatly blowing the head of an Ork off. 'Then we shall retrieve both. We will cleanse this wretched place, and take back what is ours.' The dark scowl returns to his face.

The shrieking continues, causing everyone still alive to cover their ears- even Peg-leg, a simple servitor, tries to do so, tottering back towards you, away from the sound. The marines habitually fall back, clustering up, back to back, bodies shivering with pain as the sound continues. A few of them yell back, shouting litanies in the face of the sound, throwing back corruption with purity and hate.

The orks roar back, of course. Ain't no squawking git gonna out-noise the WAAUGH.

The grate bursts open, and something massive and heavy falls through it, hitting the ground with a meaty thud that topples poor Peg-leg, and everyone else near it. The unexploded corpses of the cultists suddenly sing with praises of corruption and scrapcode, illogical maths and charts in dimensions not meant for man to hear.

It is a terrible thing- a daemon half-real half-unreal, a thing still thought as much as flesh. It contracts, the manufactured body of scrap and electronics shivering and warping as the thought of the daemon tries to coalesce. Then it unfolds again, revealing great shining wings of circuit board, feathers made from glass and bones, tied with sinew and wire.

The body is carefully-stitched muscle and fibers, eyes made of lights and barely-contained hatred, a massive gaping hole in the chest writhing with the invisible energies of the warp and the pale blue arcs of electricity. It opens it's beak-maw of metal plating and jawbones, and roars in anger. It has no lower body - the whole thing feels half-made, not finished, a little sloppy.

'My appearance has been delayed too long! No longer! Here I will make my legs from your BONES, Astartes! Here I will make my spine from your WEAPONS, ASTARTES. HERE I WILL MAKE MY STAFF FROM YOUR SOULS, ASTARTES. I WILL MAKE YOU INTO ME, AND WE SHALL WRITHE IN THIS PLANE FOR EVER, UNTIL MY LORD HAS QUASHED YOUR CORPSE-GOD!'

CHAOS: cockblocked by 1 point. :(

    >oh FUCK
You manage to scream at the sight of the thing, the machine spirits trapped within it wailing so loud and clear even a deaf man could hear it. The marines react quickly, falling back, chanting litanies you all know by heart- familiar rites against corruption and possession, in High Gothic. You find yourself chanting the same, but in Binaric. The three Marines near you continue to keep up their guard, opening fire on the... the /thing/, the daemon as they /advance/, the stupid brave fools. Other small groups follow suit. You realize the advancing ones have Powerfists.

You quickly order Peg-Leg to join in delivering fire on the thing while you try to figure out something, ANYTHING you can do. He does his best, pointing hismelf at the enemy and unloading the last few shots at the thing before throwing the gun itself at the beast.

Most of the rounds simply flare into light in front of it, vanishing in a puff of impossible. A few get through, shattering glass feathers and severing tendon thread. This only serves to anger the daemon, who lashes out with it's too-long arms and head, fearsome beak-maw plucking an Ork right out of his mob and neatly severing him.

The Orks decide that it is not the time to krump and fall back, opening wildly inaccurate fire on the horrible thing. More of their shots get through, but what are bullets to such a merging of flesh, metal, and the powers of the warp?

You have access to the panel and to your inventory.

'Aim for the silver bindings!' you cry out over open vox. 'That's part of the rituals holding it here!'

You remember well the Dukta used in the myriad rituals of binding, repair, and personification.

An Astartes- one of the Sergeants- points at a particularly burly Ork. 'Cowardly gits!', he yells, 'You ain't DESERVIN' t'be ORKS! Y'all GRETCHINS! All of you!'

The Ork shoots the Astartes the evil eye before charging the daemon personally!

A tentacle lashes out from inside the hole in the daemon's core, made from loathing and warpfire and extension cables, snapping across it's face. The Ork turns to ash.

The rest of the Orks pause. Some of them, it seems, wouldn't mind being Gretchin.

You spin on your heel, ordering Peg-Leg to follow as fast as he can. He voxes an affirmative.

As you race down the hallway, you cant your plan (or the idea of your plan) to your Astartes savior. He doesn't respond, but the fact that no one is chasing you seems good enough.

You run back, ignoring the corpses of cultists that seem to suddenly be everywhere- hanging from vents, up against walls, on the ground. They're all missing... parts, you notice.

In the lab, the lights are still on. One of the containers is open and empty; the rest are patiently waiting, making you dizzy and weak being near them. The markings on the wall titter and squeal, taunting you with your failures- 'our master lives!', they say, 'Our master is real and flesh and metal and movement! Yours is dead or corpse or asleep forever!'
