To answer your question, Pokemon Tabletop Adventures is a game based on the D20 system designed by one Dr. Mr. Stark. The "alpha" rules are available on 1d4chan, but they're incredibly incomplete. The beta ruleset will likely be released sometime late this summer.

Am I the only one who thinks Pokemon is a rather dull world to set an RPG in?

That and Fallout. Yet those are the two most popular settings for PnP games these days.
    >> Exalted !OOirDpvrkA 04/15/10(Thu)19:50 No.9215256
True, but that's really only because Electivire isn't weak to Stealth Rock.

I agree, at least when you're playing as a human. I think, though, that if you were to play as a Pokemon, there could be some more potential...

    >> Anonymous 04/15/10(Thu)19:51 No.9215274

Well, I think that Pokemon has a lot of potential regarding tabletop RPGs. I do agree with you on Fallout, though, given that it's just a fairly standard post-apocalyptic setting. It's the gameplay and design that sets it apart from the rest of the pack, which likely couldn't be replicated in a tabletop setting.

    >People not understanding Fallout

Look, I know Fallout is a favorite trollin' target due to its rabid fanbase, but let's get something straight here.

Fallout is a very specific thing, and not "just the standard post-apocalyptic setting;" it is a fusion of both the strongest hopes and fears of the 1950s, as if both their dream of a technologically liberated future AND their fear of a mutant-infested atomic wasteland both happened.
    >> Anonymous 04/15/10(Thu)19:57 No.9215376

Nah, even playing Pokemon sounds really dull. Only four attacks, no real reason for different pokemon to work together (unless you want a Mystery Dungeon game, but then it isn't really Pokemon), and no threats.

    >> Anonymous 04/15/10(Thu)19:58 No.9215397

Exactly. Fairly standard post-apocalyptic setting. Look, I really like the games and I think they're very well done, but it's still fairly cliched. There's nothing really wrong with that, though. Just because it's been done doesn't mean that it's bad.
    >> Anonymous 04/15/10(Thu)19:59 No.9215407
I agree. I'm not a big Fallout fan, but that's because it's style and tone aren't really what I want out of a post-apocalyptic setting. That doesn't make it a generic, boring setting.

the intro animation is pretty fucking sweet too.

if you've read the special manga, that's what the tabletop is based on. you get more than four moves, and you are a trainer. your abilities as a trainer as as easily as important as your pokemon.

In tabletop there are two primary conflicts, Official battles, (duels, gyms, contests, etc.) the standard game rules mostly applies to these. trainers can only give command abilities to pokemon. Ace trainer/researcher/coordinator excel in this field. This is also your primary way of leveling up and earning funds.

Then there is unofficial fights, (streetfights, vs. rockets, wild encounters) this is an anything goes beat down. trainers can attack and will be attacked. this is where martial artist and psychic excel. Death is also a possibly in these fights and the primary storyline fights are these.

You aren't supposed to actually like Magikarp. That's the joke.

Also, depending on how you play Pokemon's setting, it could probably work out. If you want to have a mindless silly game the game's setting works just fine, but if your LOLGRIMDARK, then the Pokemon mangas work out just fine. If I recall right, there is a chapter in the manga in which a giant Haunter kills Pokemon and Humans alike.

I suck at thinking right now.

I think it's mostly that the Haunter was stupidly powerful, but because it was wild it hadn't evolved yet. There's another page in the Manga where they kill an Arbok that a Rocket member uses to try to kill them, they fight zombie Pokemon, and like I mentioned earlier, Ghost Pokemon kill people.

The Manga is pretty fucked up.
    >> Exalted !OOirDpvrkA 04/15/10(Thu)20:37 No.9216062

Honestly? Dragon is just "alright" as a defensive type. It's neutral to a lot and doesn't resist much, which is WAY worse than resisting more but being weak to more with how offensive the metagame is.

Plus, none of its resistances are really big aside from water, and any poke packing a water move will probably have something of another type that covers at least a neutral.

    Offensively, though? Shit's amazing.

Not bad at all. I'm at about 300 pages on the Trainer's Guide right now, with about another 30-50 to go before content's wrapped up.

There's a pretty basic amount of fluff still, but all the abilities and moves have been fluffed out, and the classes all have a fair bit about them.

It'll need a bit more, and I'm going to write up the rules in a bit more cohesive manner, but it's coming along pretty well.

yeah, i just don't like how every other pokemon has ice fang/beam/punch or a dark attack as a filler move. plus having your favorite three types being fighting dragon and flying doesn't lend itself to liking the type.

Using a set of the rules Dr. Mr. Stark uploaded, I started to build a Kamen Rider themed trainer, under the assumption that one would get a mount pokemon and a Heracross.

Martial Artist(For Jump Kick, Karate Chop, and all the endurance and strength bonuses a rider needs)/Ranger(For the boosts to CHA, for the gadget-based buffoonery of a Heisei Rider, and as a prere for the actual "Rider" advanced class)/Rider (For, well, riding. Taking Land mount is a must, and Sea and Air mount are also options. Wish there was a motorcycle pokemon available but whatever)

Also, crank up his CHA with the appropriate feats for heated speeches and take the feat where he doesn't need to grab a pokemon with he Styler before giving them orders.

Ranger Companion: A Heracross, named either "Nigo" or "Stronger" depending on my mood.

Any other suggestions on the build?

So, I was thinking about making Team Rocket well intentioned extremists in my campaign.

They started selling slowpoketail, which is apperently the best food ever, and doesn't require you to actually kill a pokemon. Plus, the tails grow back. They found a food source that didn't require you to kill pokemon.

Also, they all use koffings and zubats. Koffings are hated because they are freaks of nature that only show up at chemical plants, and zubats are slaughtered by the THOUSANDS by children. They are protecting these pokemon, and giving them a place in the world.

They bring in criminals and make sure that they don't have any powerful pokemon, ensuring that they can't cause to much trouble.

In fact, if you read the manga, the ENTIRE REASON TEAM ROCKET EXISTS is as a continent spanning search party looking for Giovannis son, who was kidnapped.

Team rocket are the good guys.

And on the subject of pokemon they help. Voltorb. It is implied they are animated pokeballs, they spend most of their time just sitting in a corner hoping to be left alone, and then trainers start poking them and try to rip them open to see whats inside.

Sure, they could have tried it with a weaker pokemon, but there was a lake RIGHT NEXT to there base. It was convineint.

That's not the point. Lance and everyone else repeatedly mentioned the fact that the Pokemon were being forced to evolve as something significant, so clearly it was somehow damaging (unless everyone who isn't Team Rocket is just delusional, and that's a theory that I don't buy).

Pretty much, from what I understand of Dr. Mr. Stark's group, he let them inherit a pokemon, either a housepet or an inheritence or somethig, alongside their usual starters.

It's not really a hard and fast game rule, per se, just something the GM can do to speed up the beginning of the game a little (low-level adventures, you know how that can be). It's probably optional, and restricted to low level or early-game pokemon, so nobody starts off with a Gible and rapes everything.
    >> Halfwing !!Slarp0p0hVx 04/15/10(Thu)23:40 No.9219452
Not my department, but it seems to be an alternitive to picking a starter.

So instead of picking a fire/water/grass pokemon from the proffesor, you bring a (reasonable) pokemon with you. Like a poliwag, Duskull, Pichu, the kind of pokemon that a proffesor would't give you, butcan still be used.

When I reordered the pokedex (which, lets face it, needed to be done long ago), I left a section just after the actual starters for pokemon that make good psuedo-starters.

Hell, in the manga the tourney at Brock's gym takes place in what amounts to a wrestling arena.

Not necessarily. "The crowd" might be Pokemon league officials making sure you're not gaming the system with your amazing psychic powers.

aren't there existing pokemon systems? I know there's one for BESM. Why make one for D20?
    >> Anonymous 04/16/10(Fri)00:14 No.9220107
BESM and M&M both have Children's Cockfighting modules. However, both of them amount to players having five PCs out at the same time, which slows down the game and is a headache for GMs to keep track of.

From a mechanical standpoint, PTA is all about streamlining the relation between Trainer and Pokemon so that it is easier to keep track of the 'mons, while still making it clear that the trainer is the principal character.

As for why d20? I dunno. Seems simple.

They wont change the way types work. However, they do need to add more damaging poison attacks.

As for stealth rock, they should make it last only 5 turs, and add more variety's of each type, then have it function like weather, only one can be out at a time. So you can have stealth rock, OR poison spikes, but not both. They also need to add one that inflicts burn, Like spreading embers on the ground.

    1. Involve the use of pokemon, so the player can play a pokemon, but make them distinct from the pokemon themselves.
    2. Represent the canon characters who are... Mystic and have close relationships to the legendary pokemon (such as movie character of the days).

Godspeaker is basically all of the antagonists in the movies. It isn't named for an ability to speak to gods. Rather, the Godspeaker's abilities will be god-like and their actions will be like the voices of gods.
They will have a negative effect on the given legendary they interact with, and will be able to use legendary Moves, syphoning the legend's strength. They will be the opposite of the Muse Advanced class, who will harmonize with legends to use their power.

Exp drops are pretty large. Pokemon level fast, until around 35. But a well used 35 can one hit K.O. a level 60. Pokemon can be taken down pretty quickly in game so encounters are never drawn out too long.

Also, in the last thread you never mentioned the rune master, whatts it do?

    Unown manipulation.

Gets pretty wacky when you own enough Unown.

Specifically, I want to know if the following tactic is viable, at the levels before Abra can evolve and learn new moves: Trainer has glaive. Abra teleports trainer to places to use the glaive and, as much as possible, avoid harm.

Actually When reordering the pokedex I made it vary easy to find pokemon that work well for starters. The list basically goes like this:

    Vendor Trash
    3-stage pokemon
    2-stage pokemon
    Single Stage pokemon
    Eevee and Tyogre

This really solves the whole Pichu being 100 or so pokemon after pikachu.

It has an Adamant Nature, there by boosting its Attack. And no IV is lower than 26, with most being 30-31.

It's a beast. Especially when it's got STAB Hyper Fang. If it was holding a Choice Scarf or Life Orb, it would probably decimate entire Elite 4 teams by itself.

    or control-f on the .pdf

One of the starting abilities is that you can fuse multiple Unown into a single entity, so you can store multiple in a single poke ball. They also can summon Unown to add them to their roster. The combined Unown will have a single HP total, and will be able to use the different hidden powers they each know.

Have one of each of the Unown as a single entity?
Reality just got a whole lot weirder.

Meh, They can if they want to. But really, nintendo needs to get rid of that shit and create a better dex. The only thing I didn't like was the placement of eevee and unown.

However, with the rune master announced, I'm a bit more comfortable with it.

Also, stark, I think I remember you saying you were going to put in a system for makin Fakemon. That still in?

Insane luck fights are always fun.

National dex IS pretty awkward. I wouldn't put a full rewrite past them at some point, but keeping the original 151 in their classic order for nostalgia value may be too much of a thing to give up.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/10(Fri)02:33 No.9222528
I can't see them doing a complete reorder, but it would make sense to place evos and baby forms next to one another.

Which brings up another question, how do you determine the type of hidden power?

    >> Touhou Homebrew Guy 04/16/10(Fri)02:37 No.9222610

The Runemaster and Unown. Are there benefits for spelling certain things out? Can it eventually make Unown learn stuff besides Hidden Power?

    Hidden Power – Normal
Each pokemon and person holds a different hidden ability deep inside, and they unleash it in a burst of power.
    EOT – 2
    See Effect
    Effect: No Target, Burst
Hidden Power makes a 3-meter Burst. When a pokemon first obtains the Move Hidden Power, roll 1d4 and 1d20. For the 1d4 roll, a result of 1 makes the Damage Dice Roll 2d10; a result of 2 makes the Damage Dice Roll 4d6; a result of 3 makes the Damage Dice Roll 3d10; a result of 4 makes the Damage Dice Roll 2d20. For the 1d20 roll, the Type is Bug on a result of 1; Dark on 2; Dragon on 3; Electric on 4; Fighting on 5; Fire on 6; Flying on 7; Ghost on 8; Grass on 9; Ground on 10; Ice on 11; Normal on 12; Poison on 13; Psychic on 14; Rock on 15; Steel on 16; Water on 17; and on a result of 18-20, reroll the d20. Those become the permanent stats.

I left it up to my player's backstories. One of them did field studies with a Venonat from his university, and when he left school, he stole it. Another raised a cubone in his house as a pet. Another had pets at home, but when they started their journey, they wanted to start fresh so they didn't take anything with them to Oak's lab.

I've been doing a lot on my own time since I couldn't find it. So don't worry. Once you're back up, let me know so I can tell you what I need so you don't go copying what I've already done.

Dirty and I have been working on a space efficient character sheet for printing out. Trainer Info will be on one page, and pokemon pages can fit 2 pokemon per page. If you're stating each pokemon you catch over the course of a campaign, you might end up having 5 or 6 pokemon sheets. Generally, you'll end up catching pokemon you never really want to stat and will just list them on your trainer page's PC inventory.
Pwah has been making the spreadsheet. It gets tweaked now and then. Both the player sheets, for printing, and the spreadsheets will be ready by Beta. Until then, sorry folks.
