You are Suzume Toranaga, Sparrow Clan Bushi. You have been sent by your daimyo to do whatever it takes to stop the Lion and Scorpion from using your clan's lands as a battlefield.

In our last installment you met a Wasp name Shinichi who was sent as an emissary to your clan. He went on to your lands while you ventured into the forest of Kitsune Mori. There you met a creepy old couple who warned you of the kappa that guarded the river. You tricked the kappa and may have made a powerful ally in the future. We ended with you emerging from the forest near Kyuden Kitsune, the castle of the Fox Clan.

but now my fears have been laid to rest!

The faded trail widens into a road again as you enter the only civilized area in Fox lands. Rows of neat rice paddies are tended by industrious peasants. In the distance you can see the stately walls of Kyuden Kitsune. If you hurry you will arrive in time for the evening meal.

    What shall you do?

Spurred on by the sight of Kyuden Kitsune you ride hard towards the castle. Your borrowed steed seems to understand the urgency with which you ride. As Lady Sun begins to flee from Lord Moon you arrive at the gates of Kyuden Kitsune.

The guards at the gate ask for your traveling papers, and seeing that they have been countersigned by an Emerald Magistrate they allow you through. Your horse is taken to be stabled and you are shown to your quarters and a small bath house. The servant there tells you that you have a little less than an hour before dinner is served in the main hall.

Thankfully you enter bathhouse and happily begin scrubbing 3 days worth of road off. As you are returning to your quarters you spot your friend Shinichi of the Wasp entering a room two doors down from your own.

    ...What.

Something doesn't smell right. Wasn't Shinichi supposed to be heading for Sparrow Country? How'd he get here faster than us (who were heading for Fox the entire time)?

    Maybe he rode really fast?

Altogether, though, it IS a bit fishy, given the enmity between Fox and Wasp. Investigate the matter further after we have dinner or go and confront him right now?

We've got a "little less than an hour" (which I'm taking as meaning about 45 minutes). We can spare a little time to track down Shinichi. I say go for it and talk with him to see what happened in Sparrow Country.

Also, do we have form of fire? Might be useful foSPY CHECK.

Could still be a spy or summat, so its best to keep going with caution.

Let down our guard a little and talk more openly with "Shinji-san" and confirm that we are indeed the Sparrow Emissary, and say we've only arrived a couple hours ago. Then, ask how long he's been here on Fox lands and if he's had any news from the Wasp.

As you chat with Shinji he tells you he arrived at Kyuden Kitsune this morning after riding through Kitsune Mori the night before. He tells you that the forest at night is uncanny, he saw many strange things and swears a giant wolf was tailing him most of the night. He confirms the story that Shinichi told you, that the bulk of the Lion forces are a bit over a week away from the border with Wasp. After about 10 minutes he excuses himself as he has to get ready for dinner at the main hall. He mentions that Ryosei, the Fox daimyo, will be in attendance.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/10(Sun)00:51 No.9262107
Also, don't we have Wasp Shinichi's chop as well as Scorpion Bayushi's? I think we traded chops with him back in thread 2. No need to pull it out right now.

Also, how similar are chops given strong family relations? If we get this man's chop, is there sufficient similarity between his chop and his brother's that we may at least see if he is whom he says? (Perhaps a perfectly identical chop could be sign of someone who planned to impersonate the Shinichi we know.)

Best to keep the Scorpion Clan chop hidden; might stir up a hornet's nest if they think we're here on Scorpion business. Comparing chops sounds like a good idea though, depending on how similar individual chops would be.

Either way, we can confront him with it after dinner; best get there a bit early and see if we can't get a little private time with the Daimyo before everybody shows up.

Yes you did, I forgot to add it to your inventory. And yes Shinji gladly exchanges chops with you. A quick look at the chops side by side you immediately see a difference, Shinichi's chop has a mark indicating he is first, while Shinji's chop has a mark in the same place indicating he is second. You'd hazard to guess that Shinichi is the elder of the two twins, if only by a few minutes.

As it is getting close to meal time. To properly prepare for dinner with the daimyo of the Fox clan, please make an Etiquette roll, roll 5d10 and keep the best three dice vs a TN of 15. If you roll a 10 we will take the rightmost digit of your post as the roll of the exploding die, in the case of more than one 10 we will proceed right to left along your post number for additional rolls.

Well done. You properly dress for the occasion and remember it is customary to bring a small gift to host. Thinking quickly you decide make some handmade calligraphy for your host. Carefully you set out the Calligraphy set your aunt Kyoko gave you for your gempukku...

What shall you write for your gift?
For quality roll 5d10 keeping 3 vs a TN of 10. If you successfully make 4 raises it would be considered fine quality art. Your fine calligraphy set gives you a free raise. You have 2 Void points to spend, which may be used for either another 1d10 rolled and kept or a free raise. You are limited to making 2 raises without spending a Void point.

Personally, I say save 'em; we've still got a pretty good shot of giving the Daimyo a passable gift, if not a masterpiece, without spending a point.

So that's the question gang: worth a void point to have the possibility of _really_ honoring fox? (Not a sure thing, but impossible without.) I'd say we should probably go for it. Best to make as great an ally as possible.

We want something suitable to the situation, as well as inspirational. Honor through perseverance, strength through unity, the virtue of the small over the overbearing... something like that. This is why Sparrow became clan, after all: speaking the right truths, in just the right way.

A 24 was enough to hit three raises (2 made and the free one). Your brush strokes are steady and true, you finish your work with plenty of time to spare. The three raises are enough to noticeably make your piece visible as a work of artistry. As soon as it dries you tie it with a bit of red twine and head to the main hall.

As you walk into the main hall you are greeted by an elderly man. He directs you to a seat near the head of the main table. Shinji is seated opposite of you. To your right, towards the head of the table, a pretty young lady bearing the Fox mon is chatting with an older man who is closest to the head of the table. To your left is another Fox, a middle aged man who introduces himself as Aki. You and Shinji appear to be the only non-Fox in attendance.

    >>9262736
Yes, but in the future please call the number of raises you are making with the roll, normally only Rank 5 Bayushi Bushi get to call raises after the roll.

    >WHY are there so many fucking quest threads.
Is that a question? I'm going to pretend it is & answer.

The reason why is because some people think they can run one so they start. Eventually they stop due to either lack of interest or they just suck & no one wants to deal with it. The good and/or entertaining ones like L5R Quest, ZeonQuest, & Maid Quest do well because they DON'T occur every day.

Kitsune Aki is pleasant enough fellow. He tells you that he runs a small merchant interest for his clan. There are many rare herbs that grow within Kitsune Mori and he manages the gathering and transport for sale of those herbs for export. His most interesting story is that the Mantis have nearly doubled their import of ginseng. Aki has no idea what they are doing with all of it, but he is happy to supply it as it drives up his prices.

The only troubling thing he mentions is that some of his gatherers have had troubles with a spirit wolf. On hearing the word wolf Shinji speaks up about his encounter with a giant wolf the night before. Soon most of the table is in the discussion and the elderly man at the end of table, Kitsune Gohei, says that the old wolf's lost shrine must have been disturbed, but sadly no one knows how to placate it.

Just as stories about the spirit wolf die down, an attendant announces Kitsune Ryosei. The Fox Daimyo strides into room with quiet confidence. She surveys the room and gives a slight nod of acknowledgment to both you and Shinji. After she takes her seat at the head of the table, dinner is served. You are served rice with many mushrooms and other fruits of the forest. The meal is simple but delicious. After the meal you asked to step forward and present your gift, you remember your training well and may use this opportunity to use the customary denials of your gift to flatter your host.

If you wish to do so make a Courtier roll of 5d10 keeping 3 vs a TN of 20. Raises may be used to impress both Ryosei and those present. A good response to her denials is worth a free raise.

Upon being presented with your scroll Ryosei says, "Toranaga-san, your clan and mine have ever been good neighbors, no gifts are needed amongst friends like your clan and mine," as she motions the scroll away.

Let me see if I remember all the uses for void off the top of my head so people have an idea of what they're used for:
    - Gain a temporary skill point in any skill for your next roll (if you lack the skill, your die doesn't explode when you roll a 10)
    - Add +1k1 to a skill/damage roll.
    - Increase your TNtBH by 10 during combat.
    - Reduce the amount of wounds taken by 10 during combat.
    - Ignore wound penalties for a turn. (As you get more wounds, you get penalties to your rolls to represent... Well being wounded)

Can't remember if there were others and I'm too lazy to pull the book open atm since any other uses aren't relevant now.

Just a question: how hard is it to kill and/or appease spirits in Rokugan? I'm thinking about that Spirit Wolf and a way we can possibly curry favor with the Daimyo.

Spirit hunting has never been something I've done in L5R but I think it depends on the spirit. Some spirits would require certain methods/materials to hurt them while others not... Regardless, suggesting this would have to be done carefully (With our rolls, that might not work...) since it might seem like we're trying to interfere in Fox affairs and samurai might see that as us saying they can't handle their own problems.

Minor spirits can be appeased by a shiny pebble. Major spirits can require you to sacrifice your entire clan.
    And, of course, everything between.
Animal Spirits...I dunno. A dead rabbit? Of course, non-fox clan hunting is kinda awkward...and frowned upon if I recall correctly.

Entering Kitsune Mori as a non-Fox clan member to find a spirit from Chikushudo to get the Daimyo to do what you want? Probably not a good idea.

It depends on the spirit. Some spirits like muijina just like to screw with people so appeasing them is impossible, others simply have needs and if you can fulfill that need the spirit is content. Since they aren't really from the physical world it is virtually impossible to hurt them in a meaningful way. A shugenja might be able to exorcise a spirit but it generally is an exhausting ordeal only undertaken in the direst of circumstances.

In the previous installment you managed to trick a spirit and made a deal with it. Appeasing the Spirit Wolf would ingratiate you with Fox as it has been attacking their peasants.

The spirits of Kitsune Mori may be strong,
But to underestimate Lion ferocity could be fatally wrong.
It is for our survival that we must stand,
Lest the Lion slay each of us out of hand.
The Fox, the Wasp, and the Sparrow must unite,
Lest we be drawn into an unwinnable fight.
If first the Wasp, then why not the Sparrow?
And from our lands the Fox lies but the distance of a loosed arrow.

The bloodlust of Lion must be fought,
for our lands under Lion rule is a horrible thought.

    The Wasp stand with Sparrow to quell the tide;
Will you join us and stand by our side?

Ryosei chews her lower lip as she considers your words. "We have few bushi to contribute, and our shugenja are not trained for war. Before I send my people to fight and possibly die I must know what sort of plan Tsuruchi and Suzume Mukashino have come up with. I shall go with a small vanguard to Kyuden Asahinabachi. If your Lords do not have a sufficient plan the Fox will stay in their forests. As time is not on our side, we shall leave this very night."

Nod our assent and bow deeply, followed by thanking her for her consideration.

We can ride back to Sparrow lands with the Fox Entourage, and take care of this little wolf problem they're having, so it seems like a solid enough plan. Plus, we might be able to ask the Kappa on our way out if it knows anything about the Wolf Spirit. Yey? Nay?

Sounds like it might be best. Honestly, I rather go back earlier and find out what our Lords have planned but we don't have the status to do anything even if we did... Unless they ask us for our opinion, we have to nod our heads and say "Good plan!" unless we want to risk honour and glory.

Yeah, stick with the Fox. Get on their/Ryosei's good side. We're gonna need all the brownie points we can to get them to join us.

We challenge the Lion Clan Champion to a rap battle of epic proportions.

Every one of our allies is a back-up dancer while we have a dance-off/rap battle with the Lion Champion.

But seriously, I've got the inklings of a plan that we could set in motion once we've got the Clans united.

+political points! Since Fox revere the spirits in their forest and A) we didn't kill it and B) we neutered it for all intents and purposes so people in the know can get through the forest, think they'd be appreciative?

On mentioning that you had arranged for a deal that appeased the kappa, Ryosei looks to you, "Impressive, Toranaga-san, it seems there is a bit more to you than I expected. That particular spirit has been a minor aggravation for years. I shall have people set to building its shrine tomorrow. It shall be known as the Shrine to the Kappa of the Fishing Sparrow. And you are right to think to consult it, kappa are well informed, everything comes to drink so it sees and hears much. Make ready, we will ride with great speed tonight my shugenja will guide us through the gaps in the world to Tsuruchi's castle."

The high praise from the daimyo of a clan has earned you two pips of Glory and a pip of Honor, in addition the Fox have taken to calling the Fishing Sparrow and having a shrine named in your has granted you another 3 pips of Glory. You currently have 1.5/10 Glory and 3.8/5 Honor.

Within the hour a party is assembled for the trip. Your group consists of Ryosei, Shinji, yourself, 2 Fox Bushi, and two Fox Shugenja. The bushi introduce themselves as Ryo and Tama. The shugenja introduce themselves as Hikaru and Gen. Hikaru is the young lady that was seated next to you at dinner.

The Shugenja cast their spells and with a lurch you are thrown forward and the world shifts out of focus. When you regain focus you see you are at the kappa's bridge.
