9 KB Doppleganger Damacy IV TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 04/23/10(Fri)18:59 No.9385076
The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.

Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

It's evening, and you've been cognizant for about 24 hours; you've eaten a cornucopia of people and animals, and acquired numerous traits in the process. You also have an ally: a novice human wizard named Claire. You are perched up on a rooftop after devouring a large horse, contemplating your next move (several people had suggestions at the end of last thread, will mention these momentarily).

What is your plan of action?

I did, but my plans this weekend got some major change. This is fun to run, so another session is now.

    >Acquire the "four stomachs" trait.
Your stomach is highly efficient, special, one of a kind! Why would you ever want to change that?

More to the point: show me it on the stat block of something, then go eat it, and sure.

You head down into the alleys and look for a drifter, someone who won't be missed. You snag a sleeping cat on the way for a light snack. After a little while, you see a scruffy man digging near the trash at the back entrance of a tavern. Also in the nearby are is a dwarf in armor, who is busy urinating on the side wall of the tavern.

You can leap up onto a single story roof by yourself no problem, but carrying a passenger--especially an unwilling one? Not likely.

Dwarf is looking away from you, at the wall.

    Run [General]

When running, you move five times your normal speed (if wearing medium, light, or no armor and carrying no more than a medium load) or four times your speed (if wearing heavy armor or carrying a heavy load). If you make a jump after a running start (see the Jump skill description), you gain a +4 bonus on your Jump check. While running, you retain your Dexterity bonus to AC.

(Normal: You move four times your speed while running (if wearing medium, light, or no armor and carrying no more than a medium load) or three times your speed (if wearing heavy armor or carrying a heavy load), and you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC.)

You get to the river without incident, and a couple bites to eat on the way that don't have anything you haven't acquired already (HP=14/19). Cat snacks are getting harder to find in your normal operating area, you muse, stroking the thick manly stubble that appeared ever since you ate the dwarf. The town is quiet the night after a Pelorian holy day.

You get to the river, and get cleaned up. The water is cold, but you should be mostly dry by the time you get back. You've gotten a better idea of the surroundings on the way to the river, and noted a possible guard post for later dining. You may want to scope that out for a day/night or two before partaking, though. And Claire will be getting worried.

I'm sure we are going to have an obviously messed up looking mouth if we are able to grapple and trip with it after we bite.

Crossbow proficiency would be excellent. As would more BAB, but a dwarf with just 1 (presumably) put the hurt on us pretty hard there.

This. Subtle and silent is better for us.

We should work on shoring up weaknesses, and being prepared to flee and evade pursuers. Better attacks are nice, but I'm very concerned, along with >>9389289, that we'd become less able to infiltrate. Bluff/Disguise should be higher on our list of things to get than a better bite.

    tremorsense 60ft

and Hunting spiders have a +10 racial bonus on Jump checks

Most of our beginning skills can be gathered from Experts. Rogues should be saved for class abilities, and Fighters for feats. Warriors are good for proficiencies. We can likely do some reconnaisance to figure out where some of the town guard live and sneak into their homes to coup de grace them in their sleep. Fewer guards = less threat in the city.

    Choker
    Improved Grab (Ex)
To use this ability, a choker must hit a Large or smaller opponent with a tentacle attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can constrict. Chokers receive a +4 racial bonus on grapple checks, which is already included in the statistics block.

    Quickness (Su)
Although not particularly dexterous, a choker is supernaturally quick. It can take an extra standard action or move action during its turn each round.

I like cautious and calculating, but achieving critical mass with our evolutions might do as much or more as having contingency plans and magic items.

Or, maybe not. Allies are a huge boon in 3.5 due to the action economy. I somehow doubt we're going to get many more allies though; Claire seems very open-minded about us (that one anon who suggested she may have picked us up because she likes that 14 Charisma we've got might be onto something), but that dwarf recognized us as some sort of abomination, and most other people haven't been exactly eager to make our acquaintance. We should be careful--we don't need a horde of paladins on our ass, or worse yet, adventurer parties out for a bounty on our head. But if we can get some more people helping us out (whether they get direction right from us, or through Claire), then that would certainly help. If nothing else, it would funnel food into our waiting jaws.

All that said, I'm quite glad we waited a bit after meeting Claire, and proved that despite being happy to eat anything we're not a complete dick that bites the hand who helped us. Also glad that we've given ourselves goals outside of EAT MORE. Makes it a lot cooler.

If anything, instead of letting her suspect us of being a monster and have a moral clash about aiding us, either hide it well, and/or convince her that we're not evil. Save a few puppies, eat a few families.

Perhaps. Or perhaps instead of trying to change her alignment, we convince her that being our friend is being good, even if we do some things that may be perceived as evil. Hell, we aren't even doing it out of malice, honestly. We're just hungry most of the time and have a desire to grow into something powerful.

Helping her become a full wizard should do a lot to get her seeing things our way. Maybe get into discussions about how monsters who eat people because they're hungry aren't evil, get her agreed on that, let it sit for a while, and then if she finds out--hey, we're just hungry. If we were evil, we wouldn't have helped her out and been her friend, right? A few selfless acts could go a long way toward a convincing argument.

Or we could just corrupt her, but I rather like this kind shy girl.

It all depends on how we set things up. "Horrible accident" that leaves the library ownerless? We use our money to secure the deed and open it up for access to novice wizards, instead of letting it close? Now we look like a hero, especially if they can't find enough evidence for any suspicious rumors to start.

Buying useful things is handy too, I suppose.

Personally, I think we should be using our +13 Hide and Move to do some reconnaissance on some prospective targets, and kill them in their sleep. No danger to us and a bigger payoff. Plus, with forethought, we could eat people who would pose a greater danger to us than the random folk we've consumed to date, like mercenaries, town guards, rough criminals, and the like.

We may want to try joining the local criminal organization instead of eating it, because we could have better opportunities to stab them in the back that way. Plus we could take one of their appearances and divert attention.

I get the feeling that once we have all the low-level abilities which commoners can give us, we'll start taking faces more regularly, especially if we let Claire know we have the power, one way or another. I'd like to see that occur, because it would permit us to be as sloppy as we've been, and still be safer than we are.
