They're both fine games with many things to recommend them. I suggest you check out both and see which one appeals to you personally.

Check our Pathfinder on Paizo's site, then look into 4e. Or vice versa. They're two very different games. 3.5 is a waste of your time since there isn't really anything being made for it.

You should play 4e. You are new to the game and don't have any emotional attachment to a particular edition. The 4th edition is the best edition of Dungeons and Dragons to date. Failing that, play some other RPG like Warhammer FRP, FantasyCraft or Dragon Age, for example.

Pathfinder is for people who played 3rd edition and are worried their wizard won't be able to win the game single-handedly anymore but want to take part in the shiny new game excitement.

I'd recommend 4e. I can tell you most arguments against 4e tend to be founded upon misconception or omission of contradictory facts. But it's up to you. 3.5e has its charms, I've never tried Pathfinder but I'm sure it's the same shit. All in all, 4e seems to play better and is easier to pick up in my experience. I've run it into Paragon before as a DM and had a good time.

Just download the original 3rd edition books, the 3rd edition character creator, Neverwinter Nights and then work your way from there till you get into the books that are practically "3.5 lite" due to their release right before 3.5.

From there you can then either play any other RPG of your fancy, go back and look at AD&D for it's great campaign settings and depth, or just play 4.0 and see if it's for you.

3rd edition isn't really LOL BEST EDITION, but I personally feel it's the best at giving an all encompassing "welcome to roleplaying" approach that shows influence of older systems and will let you either appreciate/dislike the approach of newer ones.

And most importantly, you need a group to play games, so whatever the group plays should also influence your decision.

But that's precisely why I call them substantive criteria! The size of the dick you are faced with, like the fundamental mechanics of roleplaying games, is a matter of critical importance! Matters of foreskin and texture are superficial variations and a matter of taste, like the presence of dragonborn in your campaign world, though I confess I was too hasty to dismiss them in my zeal to prove some kind of point.

I have played every edition of dungeons and dragons, including OD&D, or as we called it "basic" where "ELF" was a class. I have played many other roleplaying games including but not limited to; Star Frontiers, boot hill, Twilight 2000 (first ed) Middle Earth Roleplaying, Runequest, Star Wars d6, Mechwarrior, Ars Magica, Vampire The Masquerade, James Bond, GURPS, Champion, DC Heroes, and so on.
IN MY OPINION, 3.5/ Pathfinder is the best D&D. I know Pathfinder isn't technically D&D, but still. I liked First Edition AD&D, was lukewarm on second, love 3.5 and PERSONALLY DISLIKE 4. You should check out both 4 and 3.5, because it seems to be a polarized type of thing. Most people seem to like one and hate the other. Many people seem to say that 4 is easier to learn, so maybe if you are new to roleplaying in general, it's the way to go. You can read the 3.5 srd here http://www.d20srd.org/ to give you a general idea of what 3.5 is like.

Besides the semi-useful inclusion of minions, 4E is quite a bit slower with its MILLIONS OF HP, as far as I've seen. Also crits are not x2 or x3 or x4.

Let's not forget broken spells finishing combat before it even begins.
