Given any draconic species cannot possibly exist in genetically viable numbers in any world with a valid ecology thanks to trophic levels, it's fair to say they are somehow inherently magical. They likely fly by the same mechanism that allows them to reproduce without avalid genetic variance and process food vastly more efficiently.

Besides, it's granite, and the artist isn't good enough to do the speckling.

I'm guessing that due to the glaciation on those mountaintops that the approximate elevation of the foreground is roughly 5-8000 feet. That is presuming that it is spring due to the presence of the flowers. I mean, if it was winter, the glaciers would be a lot lower, but WHERE WOULD YOU GET THE FLOWERS.

So, OBVIOUSLY this is spring, and due to the level of snow melt, I've arrived at the 5-8000 ft. figure. Sorry about being so inexact.

Because drilling into granite using traditional tools is extremely hard. No need to make more work for yourself. A triple-ringed slab would suffice for most uses, and under most premodern cults sacred altars serve multiple purposes. The triune arrangement is presumably the one that uses the least work to enable the most utility.

    According to the gas law,

    pressure = density*gas constant*temperature.

if density is highter, assuming regular gas constant, for pressure tor remain the same, temperature of the air must increase for a stable system.

This would explain the sparse vegetation and high snowlines of the mountains, as a higher temperature can allow for things like brushfires and whatnot.

If you note the moisture clouds coming from both the mouths of the dragon and human. This shows that the temperature is well below the body temperature of both, and that the level of moisture in the air is fairly low.

Either that or the rarefied air is causing the moisture from both of their bodies to boil off due to the low pressure. I think this conclusion is not valid as the moisture seen pooling on the rock is not boiling. Perhaps it has a very high vapor point?

I should have tried to save her.

It was what I had set out to do. To be the hero who saves the damsel from being sacrificed to the dragon, isn't that what it was all about? I was well armed, my sword blessed to pierce the beast's hide and my armor coated with an alchemist balm to protect me from the flames.

I promised her parents I would save her. I told her people I would do it. I even had to spill the blood of a few vile beast, trolls I believe, to get to the sacrifice site. I had triumphed in battle and I was ready for anything.

...I arrived in time to see her, an absolutely beautiful lass, screaming, begging and crying as the beast approached. A monstrous thing, it block out the sun as it flew past. It was a vile black thing with massive claws and horns and its massive wings made a most horrid sound as they flapped. Smoke poured out of its mouth and left a trail in the air behind it as it flew closer and closer.

A real hero and a true knight would have then rushed to save the girl and slay the beast or at least die having tried to do the right thing. But when I saw that horrid beast what courage I had left me.

...I hid, behind one of the stone Obelisk. Me, a knight with arms and armor meant to slay a dragon. Me, a knight who had sworn an oath to see the girl returned. Her father had even promised to marry her to me upon our return. Even the lowest of scum with at least an ounce of bravery would have done something were they in my situation.

I couldn't watch. I was too afraid of the monster to dare show my head. I could hear though. I heard a scream that will stay with me the rest of my life. I heard the rendering of flesh and the roar of fire. Then the wings of that terrible beast as it flew away, full and satisfied. I waited for what seemed like an eternity before I showed my head. The girl was gone. All that was there was some blood on a rock and some burn marks.

I did not leave the way I came. I went to the west determined not to show my face again in the lands from where that fair maiden was born.

That's not an automatic outcome of human hair growth. Head har and bidily hair can and often are of different shades. Depending on lighting conditions the outcome could be different. It's hard to tell without shadows for reference but if her head is in the light while the pubic region is shaded by the thighs the apparent hair colour could be so different for identical actual hair colour.

I think there's one big thing eluding you all in your assessment of this picture.

The flowers in the girls' hair are hydrangeas. This has to be set on earth, no matter what you all say, because they need oxygen to survive, thus there is no density change making the air more oxygen than other trace elements, so your air theories are all bupkis. Also, the craftsmanship on the iron rings can only suggest that 1: They made iron, which requires a stable atmosphere, and 2: They are technologically advanced in iron smithing.

Judging by the placement of 3 rings on the slab, and the alignment of the obelisks being typical of such culture's religious sites, I think one can safely conclude that it is a celtic community. Such a claim is even further cemented by the red hair of the sacrificial victim. A celtic community also makes even more sense when applied to the raped virgin theory to troll the dragon.

I'd be inclined to say this was a religous rite with no intention of dragon interference, and that the rings are stuck as they are simply because of rust. If a dragon had EVER been there, we would see charred bones around the altar, and it's likely the rings would have simply melted away. Most logical explanation to me is that they were preparing for a ritual, perhaps applying ointments or something, when they spotted the dragon and fled.

I studied it for a bit, and it does NOT look like a sacrifice.

She is teary, but not sufficiently freaked out. At least not for the amount of time it'd take to strip her and tie her, and if she woke up that way she'd be more frantic.

For the moistening, perhaps just a general subconscious response to fear or-and here's my idea-being a "love sacrifice".

The dragon looks preoccupied-perhaps with trying to keep a spell going? I propose that he is a powerful wizard that moved to the area, which is inhabited by barbarian tribes. Like most barbarians, they offered up a maiden as a sexual favor (ancient Tibetans had no virgin daughters as during their monthlies the fathers would send them to the beds of honored travelers, Vikings sent their own wives to the beds of friends, and weaker nobles in Arabia sent their daughters to join the harem of a stronger noble).

She wasn't exactly willing, but sort of knew it was coming since she was the most attractive peasant and had no husband. She gets moist considering how much of a powerful man he must be, but seeing the shapeshifted wizard (who assumes it is a ruse to get magic items out of him and is coming in that form to intimidate) she lets out a shriek and a tear.

The skulls are there because it is a general multi-purpose area, and those are the skulls of past enemies defeated by the tribe spread as trophies to make the place sacred.

Dragon flys up, looks at the scene while circling, then lands, tromping up.
"Well, another group of idiots leaving me a 'sacrifice' grand." It is clearly highly annoyed. The dragon scatters a pouch of humanoid bones on the ground, much to the girls confusion.
"Look, I need servents for domestic tasks." The blank stare of confusion from the girl prompts it to continue.
"Cooking, cleaning, organising, fetching things. You need food, shelter, and some clothes." it states in a matter of fact voice.
    "umm... ok?"
"Good, hold still while I cut you loose, and for the trip, softskins are damn hard to hold on to."
And thats how smart dragons get loyal servents from ignorant pesants. I mean, the trip out there alone would burn more calories then a single humanoid provides.

so, to gather the information we have right now:
The scene in the picture happens in a place with an earthlike athmosphere (see the flowers) at an elevation of 5000 to 8000 feet in the Spring. The site is or was used for religious purposes, but the slab of dolomite is a later addition (as it crushes several of the bones). Despite that, the slab has been used to secure prisoners for a long time, as the rings don't lie flat on the stone, instead standing up as if too rusted to conform to gravity.
If this is is a sacrifice to the dragon, it isn't something that has happend for a long time, as the human remains don't show the signs associated with being eaten by a dragon. Probably used for a different kind of sacrifice before.
The dragon itself probably uses some form of gas to help with his flight, judging by his girth and the size of his wings. Together with the colour of the sky at this height this also hints at a denser than normal athmosphere, probably an earthlike planet that got plant species indigenous to earth through dimensional portals of space flight capabilities.
The moisture between the legs is probably the result of a fear response by the well hydrated girl.

Does this sum it up well enough?

My main problem with putting this in the standard pseudo-feudal middle-ages fantasy setting is that the young lass is clearly in excellent health and body tone, and wearing lipstick. She appears to herald from the modern world where workloads are physically undemanding (although you could handwave that as being part of the nobility or indended for this role from birth), bathing is a frequent occurance, medical care is advanced, and diets are varied. She seems to have had plenty of free time to exercise, rather than the callouses and stubby features one would expect from muscle built from labour.

I posit that this is actually a picture from the future, where advanced holosimulation technology allows people to perform erotic roleplay LARP. This also explains her mixed emotional state, as she is getting into the defenseless maiden role as her muscular lover approaches, yet the situation is ultimately consensual and desired, hence her evident physical arousal (note also the erect nipples, although I suppose that could be ascribed to the cold).

But in general atmospheric density is directly related to planetary mass...
and unfortunately so is gravity. Denser atmosphere means higher gravity.

I'm guessing the opposite is true! Look at that seemingly unimportant humanoid creature, it's impossibly tall and skinny for a world with our gravity. This suggests a low-g world that would allow bulkier creatures to sustain flight.

As for the rock, the cracks and ruts in it definitely make me think of basalt.

Interesting. One would also have to note her rather pearly teeth with no hint of tooth or gum decay. Also, judging by her proportions, she seems to be of at least 16-18 years minimum, though perhaps closer to her early 20s. There is no evidence of stretch-marks nor of increased hip girth that would indicate prior birth (and would this be a medieval-era depiction, we should see such in a lass of her age), indicating virginity, or at the very least, no live births.
I would agree that she is not of a working class as evidenced by the excellent condition of both her finger and toenails (the ruddy capillary bed is indicative of a healthy circulatory system as well as a balanced diet befitting of post-1950s first-world nations).

We call them "helicopter traps" on Earth, although they work just as well on planes. Three guns at the points of a triangle- anything flying through them, no matter which way it tries to jink once it comes under fire- will give at least one gun an easy, low-deflection shot.

It works pretty good on dragons, too.

This one is a big motherfucker, but pretty young, judging from the way he made beeline for the screaming woman chained to the altar rock. The old ones, with the scars of past duels, they'd usually make a cursory circle of the area before landing. Never enough scrutiny to spot a camouflaged man, though. Took us a while to figure out they were sniffing for other dragons laying for them. They don't give two shits about humans.

That's just fine by me. Makes my job easier.

He lands hard, and barely takes a moment to settle himself before stalking towards the sacrifice, who's still screaming herself hoarse, tears pouring down her face. Some of them pray, some of them pass out (not that it helps, the dragon nips them till they come to,) but the screamers are useful; covers up any sound we might make.

Jackson takes the first shot early, probably worried the dragon's eagerness will move him out of his arc. These obelisk ring sites are a miserable pain in our asses, when it comes to LOS. There's a low 'THWUNG,' the briefest of bass sibilant hums, and the bolt hits- low, missing the spine and the heart. Not good enough.

The sonofabitch is fast, the fastest one we've yet seen, twirling like a deverish to face the attack- just in time to dodge Benson's shot by chance, the huge projectile tearing town it's flank, laying muscle bare.

But not cutting any crucial nerves or tendons, because he's still rushing Jackson's position. The camoflauged lid of a spider hole near the altar pops open and Nate springs out like a coke-smoking jackrabbit, his lance raised and ready, but he won't make it in time.

Bushes quake and fall aside as Jackson's crew abandons all stealth for haste, the well-oiled winch drawing the little ballista back for another shot. Jackson's an ace anti-tank gunner, with a supernatural ability to know when the enemy's bluffing and when he's actually been spotted. If he's been spotted, his chances are low without cover fire-

which is absent. Our last ballista must not have LOS.

Time to act. I spring from the rocks, tossing aside my camo tarp as I bolt for a convenient boulder that's just in range of the onrushing dragon. I'm racing Benny, who's a quarter-mile distant, tracking the big bastard through the scope of his Boy's .55. It's the last-ditch option, because once that thunderous report booms across the flat landscape, the game is up and our tenuous surprise gone.

And we've got a quota to hit before we come home.

I gain the rock, flinging myself behind it and drawing my weapon in one motion. The short tube smacks down on the top of the boulder and I hastily apply myself to the crude sights, which are jittering about with the racing of my heart. Nate's charging from behind, roaring like the fucking insane Irishman he is, but still too far. I'm waiting for my shot, but if the dragon doesn't follow form- and this one hasn't- that delay will cost.

But the exposed gunnery crew is simply too tempting, and the wounded dragon is dumb and very, very pissed. Pebbles skitter as he puts on the breaks, his front claws skidding, and his chest heaves with the giant inhalation needed to fuel his building dragon-fire.

The panzerfaust speaks- a modest 'BUMP'- and the warhead takes the dragon's right foreleg off at the knee. The charge was modified from the original we borrowed from the krauts; made smaller, the easier to disguise after the fact as some other sort of damage.

He collapses, and his incomplete blast spews from his mouth, bathing the landscape in flame. Jackson's crew ducks into their foxhole, the diffused blast of bio-napalm mostly missing them. I'm not so lucky, but that little boulder saves me as I get intimate with Mother Earth.
    >> planefag 04/26/10(Mon)12:44 No.9442087
Popping up from behind my rock, my hand flies to the hilt of my blade. Jackson's crew won't reload in time, now, if their gun is even still serviceable, and I've seen dragons with missing limbs wade straight into defensive positions with all the claws and teeth they've got left- which is usually enough.

While it's vulnerable, I have to end it. The front is bad, but there's no good way to approach a dragon in melee- from the front you've got the teeth, from the sides, the wings, from the back, the tail.

However, I have neglected Nate. Still screaming like the dragon's the queen of England, he runs straight up it's tail, down it's spine, and buries his lance right between the shoulder blades.

As the head of the beat snaps around to take Nate with it, there's a brief scream of steel against stone and the last bolt nails the fucker through the neck, cutting the spine and putting it down for good. I turn to look in the direction of the shot, and see the long scratch on the side of an obelisk. The last ballista finally got it's angle, by inches.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the Rangers hunt dragons.

The would-be sacrifice was on a horse with Ralph and speeding back towards our growing little refugee camp before the rest of us can do much more then stop shaking. Well, except for Nate. He's already fetching the false-flag-flamberge, as he likes to call it, though the rest of us just call it "that fucking sword," especially the guy stuck with carrying it. It isn't heavy, just awkward- but it's finally about to come in handy. One hard blow to the pieces of the right foreleg- just an inch above and below the blast damage- and the blasted limb looks like a chopped one.

Of course, it'd take an improbably hefty blade and impossible strength to deal a severing blow that'd resemble the panzerfaust's damage, but that's just one more mystery we're more then happy to let Dragonkind make wild and terrified predictions about. An 'exercise for the reader,' like those dusty academic tomes like to phrase it.

After a few more housecleaning measures, we break down our compact ballista, obscure the evidence of our ambush tactics, and get moving. There's only a few hours 'ere nightfall, and I'd like to be far away from here by then.

Man, I thought you guys were smart, but no. All your speculations are based on a faulty assumption: That the female is intended as a sacrifice (or similar) for the flying creature. However, we can't be sure that that is actually happening. The woman might just be chained up for a "regular" sacrifice, by human hand. Or that she is kidnapped by some madman, that is just to the right of the image, cuasing the woman to look at him with terror in her eyes.

The dragon could just be a coincidence, flying by like any animal of the avian variey.

interesting point. If I may? Perhaps the dragon is an unintentional rescuer, of sorts. It is entirely likely that the girl was to be a ritual rape/sacrifice by local tribesmen. After beginning the ritual, a dragon on its way home happens to pass by. The tribesmen proceed to panic and flee, leaving the the girl still traumatized by the rape, but just excited enough to lubricate due to physical stimuli, and now without any stimuli. Depending on the strength of the dragon's olfactory senses, it may land to investigate what the insane monkeys were doing in its front lawn.
