9 KB Doppleganger Damacy VI TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 04/28/10(Wed)19:19 No.9493983
The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.

Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

You've been getting shit done, nomming citizenry and animals for two nights and two days. You've got a better body, and some gear too. You also have an ally, a novice human wizard named Claire. You're staying at her place and just got a job as a partner in her courier business. You start tomorrow bright and early, but you just had a long midday nap, it's dusk now, and you're hungry.

What is your plan of action?

    >Looks like our INT is low. Anyone else want to stalk a library or some higher-learning school?
There is a library in the city that doubles as a place of higher learning for those attempting to become certified wizards. Claire has stated that there are a pair of wizards running it; a generalist who is the senior and a transmuter who is the junior.

    Previous ideas included:
Going to a stable and eating horses
Going to the sewers and hunting crocodiles
Doing recon on either a guard post or the wizards before charging in, then eating them
    >> Anonymous 04/28/10(Wed)19:27 No.9494148

If a level 1 fighter can almost kill us a couple threads ago, a wizard with multiple levels is going to wipe the floor with us. Let's not die yet.

    >Seconding guard post.

Claire waves at you from behind her goggles as she works on some alchemy business, you're not sure just what. Out into the night you go.

Remembering a place where the guards swapped shifts from before, you head there and find a watching spot in the shadows. Twenty minutes later, a guard enters, a large dog at his heels. Another eight minutes, and a different guard leaves, with a dog of his own following.

Crime rates in the city have been rising over the past few years, leading to all guards on solo patrol being issued a dog to accompany them. The measure has proven effective in keeping guards from getting jumped, and giving them extra muscle as needed.

Lately, crime rates have been dropping.

No ranged weapon, we could lure him out and use our mobility to get him as we always do.

We'd want to do it in a way that he won't feel the need to bring his dog, make it seem like a kid pulling a prank. Child voice giggling, knocking on the door and hiding, etc.

(To be fair, you're not exactly a normal doppleganger. You can't change shape voluntarily and you absorb traits of things you eat.) You haven't heard anyone talk about dopplegangers, although you heard one or two snatches of conversation about the oddity and creepiness of blood-splattered bodiless crime scenes when you walked home with Claire.

Endurance and speed makes more sense from the longterm perspective of staying disguised, and maintaining a cover, wheras the +3 AC is for fights.

And there are OTHER horses in the world, more AC can be had with relative ease, but the faster we can move, and the longer we can move at that speed, the more money we make, the more options we have.

Our appearance is already changing. We change a little every time we feed.
So that's why I vote we adopt a luchadore mask... for the delivery businees. Get Claire one, too. That way, we just keep our manly voice.

Thank you for your own fortitiude this evening TempDM.

    Alertness please.

Always helps knowing when something is going to sneak up on us.

Also Bards and Merchants would be INCREDIBLE targets but they also are SORELY missed by their guild's or compatriots.

We should start compiling a list of folks to eat to take the edge off our animal features.

A few refugees here and there to bring down the ANIMAN look to our features might help.

    17 Constitution acquired!

Your heart starts pumping harder with each beat, you feel more lively as you take a deep breath. You are gorged on thousands of pounds of meat right now, your stomach gurgling happily. It's like a cool, natural high!

From the stables, you hear someone retching, and another individual saying, "Whatever attacked the horse at the other stables must have done this. I think we may need to notify a group of sword-for-hires."

We should quickly retreat and take cover for a bit. There's at least two guards, and, though perhaps not strong, they still might be too strong for us.

Retreat to a river, wash up, and go check up on Claire.

    >Make way to river and clean self up and then go home to Claire's. Keeping listening check for word of those adventurers missing their dwarf.

The walk to the river is blissful. All that food is making you feel so good that it's hard to concentrate on anything. Luckily, you don't run into anything meaner than you are, and a thorough wash gets most all the blood and scent away. You're dry by the time you get back, Claire still working industriously away with goggles and beakers.

    >How much does Claire know about us? I think she saw us at least shirtless, did she see that we aren't exactly human?
You haven't asked, and she hasn't said anything. Most of the traits you've taken are well internalized, and the claws you took are retractable. Despite the unusual melding of human and animal features, you still appear mostly human. Just an odd looking one who may have something wrong.

Well... this might be something to go asking about. Or finding someone who knows the political realities of the situation. Getting by on a child's knowledge, with bits and pieces of other people's memories, isn't the greatest way to know things.
