9 KB Doppleganger Damacy VII TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 05/15/10(Sat)18:38 No.9839479
The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.

Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

You've been getting shit done, nomming citizenry and animals for three nights and two days. You've got a better body, and some gear too. You also have an ally, a novice human wizard named Claire. You're staying at her place and are just about to start the first day working for her courier business.

Your presence in the city seems to also have been slowly getting noticed. Just last night, you may have earned a bounty on your unidentified head, and the night prior you drew the notice of a group of sword-for-hires after eating one of their members.

What is your plan of action?

Claire wakes you up just before dawn. "Hey, time for the first day on the job. I'll teach you the ropes today, and I'll be able to use your help with some of the jobs that I need two or three trips to finish. I'll go make breakfast, you can take your time waking up."

(Actually, since you're starting off with the first day as courier, there's not a ton of options available if you want to do it normally (as stated in prior threads). So, if there's a vote or 2 for it, we'll skip past that and get to the late afternoon, where the sky is the limit for options.)

Also, sorry for being gone, I got way sick and wasn't up for running a game.

    >If this information is available, of course.
You don't have full knowledge of a person or creature's abilities until you've eaten it. Claire is a novice wizard and alchemist; you've seen her cast a spell that lets her run as fast as a horse. She's also pretty knowledgeable about the city. Is there something specific you're looking for?

    >Skip
You spend the morning and early afternoon moving time-sensitive packages at breakneck speeds throughout the city. Claire is appreciative of the extra lifting capability, and shocked by your sudden ability to keep up with her (without needing to cut across rooftops even).

It's late afternoon. You've previously (and in this thread) expressed interest in hunting in the sewers, finding out more information about the area/shapeshifters, preying on a merchant, or nabbing a guard.

    Action?

I would second the sewers, if and only if someone gives me some reasoning behind going down there. Sewer diving for the sake of sewer diving seems risky due to virulents and bacteria. Seeing as how we nommed normal people so far (from what I gather), I would assume we have the immune system of a normal human being. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

And OP, you answered my question regarding Claire to a point with which I am satisfied, thank you.

I'd like to try and grab a merchant or two, because we need social skills badly. If possible, we should target the traveling sort, rather than the kind with shops; the ones who live in town are more likely to be noticed in their absence and quickly anger the law.

You have little in the way of secondary objectives so far. Getting Claire the cash needed to become a certified wizard was pretty popular.

Sewers it is. You know that alligators live down there, as well as nastier things if you go farther in.

Sure. If you have any more just ask.

The sewers, from what you know about the city, are a good place to find prey that you can get excellent enhancement from. You've eaten a variety of creatures so far--plenty of humans, to birds, cats, a rabbit, a few horses, a wolf, a snake, even a camel. You have a pretty tough immune system, especially with Great Fortitude helping you out.

I actually once read an explanation of why this "couldn't happen". It was based on the premise that you need a certain amount of genetic material to work with to become imbued with any sort of traits. That said, you could just eat a wad of bacteria.

I'm thoroughly against doing this, just so I'm clear.
    >> TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 05/15/10(Sat)19:09 No.9839958
    >If we eat bacteria will we gain its traits?
No. You've found that creatures smaller than rats don't seem to be helpful in gaining traits. Eating a slab of ham you found didn't seem to help either.

You pop open a sewer grate from within a quiet alley and slide on inside. It gets pitch black quickly once you're away from the opening, but you don't have any problems seeing in the dark--good thing you ran into that dwarf. The water and sewage comes up almost to your knees.

How do you plan to hunt?
    >> Anonymous 05/15/10(Sat)19:10 No.9839971
Possible stupid question, but what do we currently look like and how well can we change our appearance? If we're trying to keep friendly with Claire, we should likely have one disguise/form for interacting with her and at least one disguise to do our dirty business with. If we can look like something out of the sewers when we attack people, that may lead a false trail for anyone trying to find us. However, I would suggest 'mining' the sewers for any traits of value first before we sic the bounty hunters down there.

    >Possible stupid question, but what do we currently look like and how well can we change our appearance?
You currently look mostly like a human male with stubble, but "off" enough from other creatures you've eaten altering that appearance. A close inspection would turn up things like your membrane, and possibly your teeth and retractable claws. Your appearance changes slightly automatically every time you eat something.

    >Ambush style I think, find a place that sees some traffic and wait.
    >I say we go stealthy and silently, attacking from behind if possible.
You wade through the tunnel until you hit a juncture, then stop and wait for a creature to come by. There's a lot of junk floating down here, and you realize that not all of it might just be flotsam. You remember from the boy's memories that gators are supposed to be good at hiding. You scurry out of the water and up the rough stone sewer walls, and not a moment too soon. A gator bursts out of the water behind you. It must have been hidden underwater, and more interested in larger prey. Its surprise ruined, it waits below you, half submerged. Another gator surfaces about 40 feet away and begins floating over to your location.

It's difficult to aim and to fire while hanging on to a wall. You manage to load a bolt, but without holding onto the crossbow with both hands to fire, you have a harder time getting it aimed.

Somehow, you manage to land a shot despite this, and sink a bolt into the gator's shoulder. It hisses and begins trying to launch itself up to your location.

    Swim
A creature with a swim speed can move through water at its swim speed without making Swim checks. It has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. The creature can always can choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. The creature can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

Okay, good to know. The racial swim bonus gets struck from the options, lumped into the swim speed.

SWIM SPEED CHOSEN. The water around you feels like a second home, even if you can't breathe it. Your fingers and toes close and reopen--and when they do, there's a webbing in between them.

    >1d20+6 = 10 Bite attack
As the tail of your kill goes down your mouth, you're almost knocked off your feet by the lunge of the second gator, launching itself from underneath the water at you.

    1d20+1 = 19 Initiative Gator
    1d20+7 = 16 Initiative You

    1d20+6 = 15 Gator Attack
    1d8+6 = 9 damage

It whips around faster than you expected it could, and digs its teeth into your skin, pulling you down.

    >1d20+4 = 14
It's stronger than you expected, and pulls you into the water, hoping to wrench your limbs out of their sockets and drown you.

I'm assuming that means a textile mill however if you have to dump thousands of gallons of water back into the river every day, at the least you'll have is a ditch or something leading from just outside your workroom back to the river. I'd rather try to sneak up the ditch and get out of line of sight than chance waiting in the water, bleeding or break surface without cover.

The problem is, we don't reset it. All we do is change it into that of whatever human we just ate. I suppose that the only one that consistency really matters for is Claire, though... and it's unlikely that she'd be terribly supportive if we told her what we've been up to.

Hmm, in that case, we need to jump from roof top to roof top until we think we've lost the tracker then find a hobo to set our appearance (and hopefully scent) to. However, we need to stash/lose our most obvious clothing: our big raincoat, since that's about the only thing of us they saw.

You do your best not to leave tracks as you do this. As least the arrow wound stopped bleeding after you ate those birds. You're pretty sure that you won't be followed after that, but you can't be positive. You're washed off and dry, but even though you lost the stink you don't look so hot.
