    The Endless Isles.

A world where the legendary Two-Dagger Torriaeu stole away Death herself, leaving the door to immortality open for any who choose to take the Final Oath.

A limitless ocean, scattered with islands, archipelagos, and atolls of all sizes and varieties, but no true continents where an ordered nation could set up entirely land-based industry.

A society where piracy is so common, almost everyone has tried their hand at it once.

When death is optional, everything of consequence must cross wave, and geography prevents policed trade lanes or true nations with navies from forming, the only way to get things done is to play the Grand Game. Sail the waves, prove stronger and more cunning than the other Deathless cutthroats out there, and buy or take what ever you can, just to sell it back.

You want to enjoy the rest of eternity? You want excitement and hedonism, wealth and wine and the thrill of a good fight?

Get out there and take the Oath, pirate!

    "Ah. Lieumaux, his name is.

Jean Claude Lieumaux. Nary a more hedonistic man to be found in even the great town of Louisport. A sane man, however. More sane than ol' Jean? That ain't hard to find."

The man's teeth were bared in a scurvy grin, his wind-battered features tinted a faint orange by candlelight as he lifted the brim of his stein to his scarred lips.

"Phillistine, libertine, bastard, murderer. Take yer pick, they all describe ol' Jean. Ne'er missed an opportunity to kill every damn member of his crew as soon as he's done chasin' down his next fortune."

The old man snarled, spitting out a globule of disgusting, rank liquid from his mouth. It was a dull brown colour, mixing in with the dirty wooden table.

"Sure as my deadlights, I survived, though."

That's a cheap intro to a character based on a few other pirate characters I've played in the past.

Jean being the character, of course.

"But if there's one thing I know about Cap'n Jean, s'that he ain't all talk like those fops that call themselves Barons."

The old man raised a greying eyebrow and shifted his weight onto the wooden peg that had replaced his foot, the weight on the floor was reassuring.

"Took my leg. That saber of his ain't for show, neither's the pistols at his waist, put a bullet in you as soon as look at you, Cap'n Jean will."

He let out a coarse laugh, his mouth splitting into a mirthless grin. Several of his scurvy teeth had been replaced by silver filaments and his gums were black with decay.

"Barwench, 'nother stein of grog an' hop to it." he spat venomously to a passing maid, dressed as scantily as a seaside tavern would allow. Business was good.

"You think you're up for signin' up to Lieumaux's crew? May aswell sign yer own death warrant, kid."

Another coarse laugh, shooting the table's other occupant a mellow, yet threatening stare. One eye was a pure, milky white and the other was a jade green.

"Sure as the crow flies, kid, yer better off dying now than joinin' up with that blackguard."

So the place where a lot of projects run into a wall is crunch. Is the general intent of this whole thing to provide a setting to drop into whatever system you want, or should a whole separate one be made?

Of all the ones I've seen, this one seems like it'd be the most system-agnostic.

yea, so what I'm saying is that, unless there is a great deal of interest, I don't see us making our own system. Really, all we're still doing is collecting names, places, stories and whatnot. It's less about the setting, at this point, and more about legends, places and people.

I want a pirate with a ship full of undead cats
tha cookey get it in his murky head that, if he could somehow teach his little kitty the final oath of ol' Torrieau, he wouldn't have to leave 'im back at port
well, he did it, but kept the cat a secret for a good while. It wasn't until the cat had a litter, was pregnant from a stop at one port along the way, he had about 6 or 7 kids. Well, there was no keepin them secret then. Eventually the crew caught wind and sent to the cap'n. Ol' Cable-eye Charlie wasn't the kindest o' gents, so 'e ad the cook's cats killed, e did. Well, they was in port a' that time 'nd the cook jumped ship, leaving 'is poor ol' kitties to ther fate, But, true as ever, the oath held its end, 'nd the mother musta taught the oath ter 'er kittins. The very next day, the cats walked the decks again. this time they had 'em thrown off the edge of the ship. So tha cats drowned in tha water 'nd the next day they were back. Soon their numbers exploded and the ship was overrun with cats that would never leave. Well, Charlie left his ship fer dead on an isle near the fringe. Many have found the ship and fallen pray to the same curse, the Charlies Cat's, they call it. By now I bet the isle is filled with the little shits. lucky they can't swim

I have no intention of working on crunch; at least, not for a good long time, and even if I did I'd be more likely to write a few "patches" to use this with proven systems like FATE3.0, Savage Worlds, or even 4e, than I would write a wholly new system.

    >>9945735

I thought these were straits through some kind of large reef system or something, deadly shortcuts famous for wrecking hundreds but still too tempting for some captains to resist?

I'm just going by what was mentioned briefly in thread 3, though.

    >>9945556

Well done. Maybe move the stories to their own pages, too, and then include an index of them on the main page?

    >>9947351

Maybe I'm just biased because I wrote his story, but I like this.

    >>9947719

Just because a lot of the legends are still around doesn't mean that some haven't wound up disappearing, either into Deadwind or Fort Cross or otherwise. More importantly, the shadow'd jig doesn't take your possessions with you, so even though most legends should logically still be around that doesn't mean their awesome shit can't be out there for the taking.

In fact, that would be a pretty cool standard trade-off in this game for powerful artifacts... having the moment their original owner comes looking for them hanging over your head. And then again in a few months or years if you kill him. And again. And then he gets smart and starts trying to get his shit back with subtlety and betrayal instead of a fight...

to be honest, that was when I was still stealing words out of Homer's mouth. I like the mountains better, really.

    >Well done. Maybe move the stories to their own pages, too, and then include an index of them on the main page?
yea, I was thinking of a way to move them to different pages, but don't let them be skipped over. an index would be fine, I think

    Jan 1475

Drank the last of the Rum. Didn't realize how bad it would effect me when I haven't eaten in days.

Ate most of my journal in the resulting haze. Guess I should back up for the sake of any poor bastard who finds this.

My name is Therin Sulliman, and I'm a Crusader. Or, at least I was. One of the best, so they say, but it's all a lie.

In the beginning, I was just another poor berk with a boat, setting out to clean the waters up a bit and try to get my leather to the tannery three islands over without having to deal with the Game and all those deathless cutthroats leaching off my trade...

...And, against all odds, somehow I survived that fool errand.

I hadn't understood the Game, the world at large, not really. I didn't deserve to live, and yet miraculously I did.

This is becoming a bit of a theme, if the pale face watching me write is who I think it is.

Anyway, after putting down a few ships full of Deathless dogs, I made contact with the Order folks. With their money, training, and their Fort Cross to bring my take, things suddenly went from desperately surviving against all odds to something resembling a fair fight.

And fight I did, for twenty years.

These were hard days, always on edge, but glorious. Still it brings a tear to my eye to think of all the wretched bastards I stuck from the sea, never again to terrorize and destroy.

When I took down Gold Tooth Tannalzia, that was the height, my greatest moment, and the start of my downfall, for it was she who wore the saber.

STOP IT, DON'T YOU THINK I CAN SEE YOU OVER MY SHOULDER? WHY DO YOU NEED TO WATCH ME ANYWAY? TORMENT SOMEONE ELSE.

I knew it was special the moment I laid eyes on it. Took it as a trophy, cleaned it up.

That was when I found the inscription, simply "Davy Jones." I thought it was just hogwash, sea-rats bravado. Now I'm not so sure.

I kept on delivering some semblance of justice, then, but over the years I started to notice some strange things. Every time Death was near, whether I'd been cut, or sick, or running out of water... I'd see her, and somehow I just knew.

As long as I can stay conscious, wake up if she gets too close... as long as I can grip this saber, I don't have to die.

I didn't understand that it was fear that motivated her, then. Death, afraid? Who would believe that!

...But I did understand something else pretty quick. The Oath. It doesn't take many close calls before a man realizes just how much he'd prefer to keep on living ANY sort of life than to rot in the shallows like a pile of offal.

I started to sympathize with my prey, and that... well that's just an occupational hazard. On a ship, your crew is family, and they can tell your mind as surely as your own mother, given enough time.

Eventually, things finally spiraled out of control. My leg blown clean off in a firefight, I held the saber with a white-knuckled grip and survived blood loss that should have killed me twice over. I still don't know how I didn't black out, or how I'm sure that if I do it's all over. I just know.

The crew finally knew, then. They weren't sure WHAT I was, since a Deathless would've simply shadow'd at that point. Hell, for that matter, I'm not sure myself.

But they knew I was a lie.

So, they left me here. Maybe... a month ago now?

No food. No water. Just the Lady and I... and that cursed Davy Jones' saber.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/10(Thu)23:05 No.9950825
    that the finish?
so we assume death got to him and hid the saber away?

So, yeah. Davy Jones' saber, a quality weapon and the only thing, due to its history, feared by Death herself.

Most useful for the Unoathed seeking to tangle with the Deathless on a more even footing.

Rumor has it, it once belonged to a past Ivory Mask of the Order of the Wheel, who used it to extend his anonymous reign well into three hundred years.

Well, I had intended that to be the finish, yes.

If I were going to specify a more satisfying ending, though, as you suggest, it would involve him plunging the saber into his own chest in defiance of his delayed death-by-dehydration and Death's vigilance over him.

my only gripe is that ending doesn't make the artifact very accessible, and were you looking for it, you wouldn't even have a hint to start from.

    Ah, missed that part.

I dunno. I wouldn't use the journal in that way... or if I did, I'd alter it to include the name of the man's first mate, who would be a figure we'd encountered previously in the campaign.

Party proceeds to hunt him down, maybe infiltrate the Order of the Wheel, to find out where they marooned poor Sulliman.

If the details are common knowledge, though, then it would make no sense that someone else hadn't already gone and sought it out.
