    >Last thread (archived above) 404'd, and I'd like to continue it. Also, it's my birthday in a couple of days, /tg/, so it would be nice if you could all make this thread epic.

Long story short, I'm building a Traveller setting. Here are some of the particulars:

Early Era -- Humans have only been exploring and settling space for a couple of centuries. Half of all humans live on earth or in earth's solar system, perhaps a dozen neighboring solar systems are settled with industrial cities, et cetera, and humans have barely explored their own home sector.

No Aliens -- Humans have not encountered any other intelligent species, with two exceptions: the inexplicable UFO phenomenon continues, and at the edge of the frontier a couple of worlds have been found that contain evidence that *might* point to them having been inhabited (before being "glassed" from space). I'd like to think that the UFO people are distant-future humans who have time-traveled back to wipe out all competitors to the human race....

Restricted AI -- Sophisticated *almost* self-aware computers exist, but the era of automating everything ended during a war in which hackers on both sides turned every machine against their masters. Good automation exists, but there are many air-gaps, and truly autonomous machines are programmed before activation with no means to remotely alter their programming once they've been deployed. Thusly, HUMANS have to be present in just about everything....

Observer Effect -- A living brain must be involved in FTL travel for it to work. Each additional living brain onboard increases the travel time for FTL. The less sane any brains aboard a ship are, the more likely the FTL journey will not go as planned.

Please contribute to this juicy setting.

Humanity is Divided -- With no meaningful unifying central authority, governments including The United Earth Nations, Lunar Alliance, Martian Confederacy, Jovian Combine and Alpha Centauri Federation (just to name a few) squabble, thousands of corporations profiteer, and of course liberty-minded individuals and outright pirates eek out a (sometimes prosperous) living in the fringes. Nonetheless, the currency of the UEN -- the Terro -- is the de facto currency of humanity against which all the other numerous currencies are rated.

    >the inexplicable UFO phenomenon
    >The what now?

Firstly, this is a game (after all), and the UFO phenomenon is (1) creepy (2) mysterious (3) nightmare fuel. It will not be mentioned at first. Eventually, the party will be travelling between planets or something, and omg wtf is that? It looks like a ship is following us, but I can't get a good look at it. Huh, it's gone; must've been a sensor ghost. Then a couple sessions later, a slightly more serious almost-encounter. Sure, at first, the party will laugh outright at the dumb shit drinking himself into unconciousness at the the bar babbling about the "aliens," but eventually they'll be losing their shit like it's Call of Cthulhu. And then SHIT GETS REAL.

This will be a fun theme to gradually ramp up, because it won't be dropped from the outset. Eventually, the players will discover that the aliens are in fact time-travelling distant-future post-humans who have come back to ensure humanity's survival and execute some sort of plan....of course, the "aliens" themselves are divided as to the particulars of the plan's execution. inb4 anal probes.

I wish I could help but i'm all tapped out of good ideas.
Some settings i'd recommend for you to look into (read: steal ideas from) is GURPS Transhuman Space, Delta Green and Eclipse Phase. (All can be found on demonoid.com)

Thanks, anon; I've read Transhuman Space and Eclipse Phase, and flipped through Delta Green, and these are indeed perfect inspirational works. Regarding transhumanism, there is certainly some genetic tinkering et cetera going on, but mind copying is highly suspect due to the likelihood of "computer virii" being introduced into the copy. Back to the suspicion of AI, it's not as verboten as in Dune or New Battlestar Galactica. AI is not banned, merely kept on a very short leash. A perfect example would be mining drones: you program one to harvest material from an asteroid and place it there. It does it's thing autonomously, and when it's hoppers are full of tasty rocks, it shuts down operations and essentially goes dormant, broadcasting a looped status report. You go back to the asteroid and down to the mining drone, plug your little personal computer into the mining port and instruct it to offload everything into the shuttle. Then lather, rinse, repeat. Once set on course, the drone will single-mindedly follow its instructions to completion (or until an error is thrown), stopping only if you can manage to plug into the machine and order it to shutdown.

TL;DR: autonomous machines cannot be remotely controlled via radio or otherwise; all changes to programming must be done on-site while plugged into the machine in order to prevent hackers from radio-jacking your rig.

What's lacking is my ability to GM this, lol, I have not run a game in years except for the other day when some friends demanded I pull something out of thin air, and I was not as happy with it as they were.

Where to begin? How about the fractured nation-states of humanity and the various corporations and fringe organizations that exist?

"You know the real reason you don't like me, Commander ? It's the jealousy of evolution. Normals like you are obsolete. The future belongs to telepaths .. and I intend to make sure that future happens. One way or another."

Another great place to swipe ideas from would be Jack Vance's the Demon Princes and Alfred Bester's... well all his works really.

During the last war in which unrestricted AI was used, some inventive hackers figured out how to turn the sophisticated missiles used then against the very ships that launched them.

This led to the development of what are essentially "TOW Missiles In Space": steerable missiles which trail spools of nano-scale signal wires behind them along which targetting data travels. If the lines are cut, the missile detonates. The control wires are about a million kilometers long fully unravelled.

Most folks stick to railguns and lasers.

Some interesting non-human and quasi-human "folks" in this setting include:

A rogue AI hivemind that assembled itself from surviving hacked warships and drones near the end of the last AI-using war and scampered off to various dark corners of various solar systems. They engage in piracy to acquire fuel, ammunition, materials, new ships, new drones and other inexplicable stuff. For some reason, it/they seem of late to be stealing classical art and human hostages.

A while back, many dolphins were uplifted and put into specially designed scout ships, then sent off out into the depths of space. Some have started returning with really weird findings.

Several brigades worth of genetically engineered super soldiers exist, but many of them went rogue and took over the normal-human-run ships they were stationed on, skedaddling like the rogue AI hivemind. They are pirates and mercenaries for the most part now, although one charismatic leader has emerged to create an ubermench empire.

And, of course, the scary ass grey "aliens" with their inscrutable agendas who hide in the shadows and try to make themselves as apparently non-existant as possible.

The risks of remotely-controllable AI applied to drones and missiles results in the production of numerous manned "starfighters" armed with both conventional unguided projectile weapons and energy beam weapons. Due to the risks of space combat, engagements often involve squadrons (if not swarms) of small fighters backed up by distant carriers and wire-guided missile-firing capitol ships.
